Welcome back to the no time to waste podcast studio and I'm your guide, Marcus Murray. Welcome to season two, episode six, decide to respect time. One day you'll realize that time wasn't taken from you. You gave it away today. We're not talking about being busy. We're talking about deciding to separate regret from destiny. Stay with me. So time is what we're talking about.

time that one commodity that's non-renewable and what most people are finding is you don't actually spend time. You actually exchange life. So time is the only currency that you receive daily that you can never save. You can't borrow it. You can't replace it. Money, for example, can be earned. It can be restored. It can be rebuilt.

You can do all of that, but do know what's funny? You can never get your time back. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where people took advantage of the time that you made available to them? It's almost like they over extended their welcome. They over utilized your time. For example, you agreed to go somewhere with them. Hey, I'll go to a mall.

or I'll go wherever it is that you're going together. And then the whole event ends and they just don't want it to end. They want to use every single moment of your time. But what's interesting is time is the one asset you can never get back. So once it's completely used, it's all done. So there is power in being able to say no to people as it relates to your time.

When you begin to treasure your time, your time actually becomes your treasure. People will value your time once you begin to value your time. And the funny thing about life is there are some tragedies and it's not that, time runs out. The greatest tragedy is that we spend our time on things that really don't matter. So in essence, we're not,

Marcus Murray (02:25.132)
running out of time, we're basically just giving our time away. So if we think about it, if time, I'm sorry, if time is life and life is comprised of time and we're wasting time, then we're in essence wasting ourselves.

by wasting time. If life is only time and time is what we're giving away, shouldn't we be more mindful of the time? Well, there's something called procrastination. And there is a quote that says, procrastination is the thief of time. The reason they say procrastination is the thief of time instead of using

the time that we have, procrastination causes us to pull back, sit back, not do anything, and the time leaves anyway. Whereas we could have been doing something. But the funny thing about procrastination, I think the thing that makes it, I guess the best word to use is dangerous, is because it seems benign. It seems like it's nothing. It actually

procrastination seems like it's temporary, but in reality it's very destructive and it's more than temporary. It's making a permanent indent into your future. So procrastination is stealing, momentum, not just the minutes, it's actually stealing your momentum. That forward thrust is being removed.

with procrastination, the longer a decision is delayed, the heavier it becomes. So what's interesting is when you delay today, there is an interest penalty on that delay. So actually the more often you delay something that must be done, the weight of that thing becomes heavier and heavier. So the best strategy for achieving success in life

Marcus Murray (04:48.074)
is to always do the things that need to be done and don't delay. Because if you delay, it's almost like time, the delay in it adds an interest rate to whatever the thing is. So it becomes harder to do it in the future. So it's easier just to do it now. So when things need to be done, we need to just move forward with it. So procrastination,

Never says never procrastination is always in our ear whispering.

Marcus Murray (05:26.946)
And the funny thing about that is the longer we allow that whispering of not now, it, it, holds us back. makes us, powerless and it actually strips us of the confidence necessary to move forward with intentionality. Speaking of intentionality, there is something there, there is activity that people take and it's a lot of

busy activity where they're just busy. They're constantly busy, busy, busy, but there's no forward movement. So busyness is not the same as intentionality. Intentionality means you're moving on purpose. Busy means you're just moving a lot. So busy people feel calendars. Intentional people achieve purpose. Busyness numbs us to productivity.

It makes us feel like we're doing something, but in reality we're not effective. So we, I was just in a training probably two weeks ago and the speaker was talking about income producing activity. If we look at all of the activity in our lives, we can say, is this positive productive activity or is this the idle white noise of activity, which is busyness.

B, we have to be able to categorize which one is it because one of them is positive. The positive intentional movement versus the busy white noise type. No, not that one. With that being said, at the conclusion of the day, you can actually be exhausted where you've been so busy all day and at the same time be misaligned and nonproductive.

Busyness does not equate to productivity. That's why goal setting is so very important. If everything is important, then nothing is truly important.

Marcus Murray (07:38.114)
And I need you to imagine that for a moment. Some people are very responsive to the emergencies of others and whatever call comes or tweet or ping or text, that becomes the crisis of the moment. And if all of that is important, then nothing is really important. We have to take control of our lives.

and categorize the important things from the distracting things. Busy has a way of filling our day, and that's all it does. But intentionality fulfills our calling and our destiny, and we'll never achieve destiny with an abundance of distractions. So another thing that happens, and again, all we're talking about is,

time. That's all we're talking about, time and intentionality. There's this thing called delay. Procrastination causes us to delay doing what we know we need to do and we basically avoid doing today what we need to do saying, okay I'll do it tomorrow. But what happens, regret begins to compound because we think, man why didn't I do that yesterday? And it just gets worse and worse.

And time, what time actually does, it magnifies the consequence of the delay. So had we done it yesterday, it would not have been as bad as it is today. And that's why there's that saying that discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons. Regret is very heavy. So if we only get one shot at this life,

We have to make it a point to do the very best we can with every moment that we've been given. So most people don't fail from a lack of ability. The reason they fail is repeated delay. And that's just a matter of fact. So think about it. We can number our days because we talked about it in a previous episode. We only have so many days. There's only so much time.

Marcus Murray (10:03.798)
and there is absolutely no time to waste. Now that doesn't mean that we panic. We don't have to panic. We can have urgency without anxiety. The urgency is that we have to stay focused on what we've been given because wisdom has the ability to count the days, but at the same time, it carries the optimism of the future with a positive outlook. So panic, however,

That kicks in from uncertainty. When people are uncertain about the future, they can't decide what matters most. Decisions get more and more complicated. In reality, we actually don't need more time. What we actually need is more clarity. So this week, what we're going to think about is managing and recognizing that time is our most valuable commodity. Now we've got some homework.

which I like to call hard work. And this is what we're going to do this week. Number one, identify the time wasting activities in our life. What are they that repeatedly cause us to waste time? Eliminate one of those. Number two, we're going to think of what is it in our life that's a priority needs to get done, but we've been putting it off. Just one thing.

And guess what we're going to do? We're going to do it. So the first thing we're going to do is identify a time waster and, cut that thing down. For example, if it's watching television, if it's social media, if it's watching the news, if it's listening to non-productive material, whatever it is, cut it in half. And then we're going to identify what item is a priority, something that needs to be done, but we've delayed.

We've postponed and we're going to do that thing. And then finally, we're going to ask ourselves some questions and you'll need to write these down. Number one, what am I calling timing? That's actually fear in disguise. Number two, if I keep living this way, what will my regrets be? Number three, what am I busy with that has no definite return?

Marcus Murray (12:33.9)
And number four, where have I mistaken wisdom for researching? Hmm. Usually when we don't want to take action, we go into research mode. So what is that thing? That is going to be our homework, hard work for this week. Now, as usual, I'd like to conclude with a letter to my sons. Son,

No one ever taught me how expensive delay really is. I always thought I had more time until time started collecting interest. Every season I postponed growth. It charged me something that I could never get back. Son, always respect time. Not because life is short, but because purpose and destiny require precision. Time will either serve you

or sentence you depending on how you treat it. Don't wait for clarity to act. Always remember that action creates clarity. Anything you're going to do eventually should probably be done immediately. And don't live like tomorrow owes you anything because it doesn't. One day, like me, you'll look back and realize the most powerful decision you ever made.

created a result that proved it was not how fast you moved, but the decision that you made to take action that revealed the wonderful life that you would enjoy because you refuse to delay. Son, I'm so very proud of you. Thank you for tuning in and remember time won't betray you. It simply keeps the receipts. With that being said, let's go and seize the day.

Take care and I'll see you on the next episode.
