We have tried something new to celebrate the very first episode of our second year. In celebration of our birthday, we have brought our wives onto the podcast. We're doing something our listeners have asked for for quite some time. We've let the fact checkers into the studio, and we have no control over what they're going to say. And I don't know who's more nervous, them or us.

Well, unless you've unless this is the first time you've listened to our podcast, you've already recognized a couple of the men's voices here. But of course, I told you my name is Stephen Dinkins. I'm here with my great friend Bubba Johnston, aka the AK the Barracuda. And then we've got Scott Dinkins, my uh brother, and a good friend, a pastor from over in Chapin, who's with us tonight. Now, on top of the three of us, you've got our better halves. And I'll start with Kim Johnston. Kim's a school teacher here in Sutler County, married to Bubba for how many years, guys? 20.

Well, it'll be 26 in November.

26 years of bliss. Yeah. Bubba said that. And then we have my sister-in-law, sweet Sandy Knowlton Dinkins. Uh Sandy works for the insurance group, the casing group over in Columbia, has got six beautiful children, married to a knucklehead. But uh you guys have been married how long?

Twenty years. Twenty-one in August.

Twenty-one. All right, man, time flies. It feels like that was just a couple years ago. Yep. And then last but certainly not least, we have my beautiful bride, Sarah Elizabeth Dinkins. She is uh, well, Sarah Elizabeth Peru Dinkins, she has been married to me for 28 years this past June. Sarah, welcome. We're glad that you are here. Sarah and I have four kids together, and um, we got a lot of stories to talk about tonight. And some of them I hope she doesn't bring up, but I got a feeling that all of us are gonna be a little uncomfortable at some point or another. Yeah, we might find about like nine episodes tonight. We can be here until midnight. We could just keep going. So, how did we get here? How did we end up at a podcast uh uh a year deep, and then with these wives on the podcast? Well one of the reasons we were able to start this podcast and we've made it this far is because we got great wives. So, first off, kudos to the three of you for letting us come up here and meet at odd times at odd days and odd uh odd intervals to be able to record these uh episodes. But you've also been very encouraging to us along the way. You've also offered some really good feedback along the way. Some of it uh maybe it's just constructive, we'll need to give that feedback. Particular feedback. Um but it's been good. But I want to ask, I want to start tonight by asking each of the ladies a couple simple questions. Um This podcast started off with outdoor stories. Stories that involve the law, stories that involve getting in trouble, stories that involve hunting and fishing. Um, Kim, before you ever laid eyes on Bubba, what was your experience with the outdoors? Did you grow up doing any kind of hunting, fishing, being outside for any other reason?

I did. Um, so I didn't hunt so much, but my family spent every summer at the lake at Waibu. And my grandparents had a house, and we, all the cousins, we all fished every summer, and really even not even summer, but fall, spring, winter, we were down at the lake a lot. Um, but some of my best memories are of all of the grandchildren and cousins lined up around our pier, and we knit we didn't catch much. We really didn't. But um there would be like 15, 16 children, um, because it was both my grandfather, um all of his grandchildren, and then his brother's grandchildren as well. And we would fish and we used cane poles and corks.

That's a lot of hooks. That's kind of what Bubba does in his best tournaments.

And it was but it was the most fun. And so those are some of my sweetest memories growing up as a little girl.

I love it. So you had some exposure to it, you understood that life a little bit. Yeah. Um now, next question, uh sticking with you, Kim. Okay. What was your first impression of Bubba when you first met Bubba? How old were you? What what did you take away from that initial meeting?

SPEAKER_01

I was 23. And I thought um he must be the best insurance man that there is because um I met him at his insurance office, and he I was with my friend Stephanie, and um she was there to pay her bill to some insurance guy named Bubba, and we spent a little bit of time in his office, and next thing I know, he was walking us to the car. And I remember thinking that my Allstate guy never walked me to the car when I paid the bill.

So it's reserve number one here. Your all-state guy was married.

That was why I was like, he was, he was, but I remember thinking, wow, this is really great service.

And then um I've never seen Bubba walk a fat old lady to a car, I can tell you that.

Well, I will tell you, I have a thing for confidence. I love confidence. And he said to me when he got when we got to the car, he said, Um, do you have a boyfriend? And I said, Actually, I do. And he said, Well, a boyfriend is a minor technicality.

He did. He said, I think we'll have a date within two weeks, and we did.

So now did the other boyfriend know about this date?

SPEAKER_01

Well, I was dumped pretty quick right after that. Um, but that was the Lord, and Bubba called, and I was available, and we went out and had been going out ever since.

All right, before I go to Sandy, Kim, you dated, you courted, you you got engaged, you were married. When you said I do, did you did you really understand how much of an outdoorsman Bubba was? Was it a surprise at all once you got married, how much time you spent outside?

SPEAKER_01

Probably not. Probably not. Um, I had heard um he had had a previous relationship, and I had heard that things just one? Well, no, he had several. But um but but but the last one I heard that things went south whenever she was wanting to limit some of his outdoor um activities.

And so he's a hit in the road. Yep.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, I think that was the end of that for him with her, and so I knew that. And so um, yeah, I anticipated there were gonna be lots of outdoorsy things and hunting and fishing.

But maybe not quite to the extent that has happened over the last 21 years. That's awesome. That's awesome. All right, Sandy, we'll come to you. Tell us a little bit about, and some of our listeners that know you know the answer to this question, but what was your experience with hunting, fishing, outdoors, stories? What was that like in the Knowlton household?

SPEAKER_02

It was we there were a lot of them. Yeah. I've got four brothers that hunt. My dad hunted. Um I remember going hunting with him on Saturdays. He dog hunted, and so we would get up and go just ride. I didn't know anything about hunting. I didn't know I d don't even remember shooting the gun, but I remember being with him and that it was fun just to have a turn going with Daddy. And um I would go to the fox pen, they would go to run their dogs there, and had no idea what was going on. I just knew that I was hanging out with daddy and then it was fun. Um my mom loves to fish and so we would fish. We got to go to the lake one week out of every summer. That was our family vacation. And um we would just get in the little boat and putt around the docks and fish and um ended up in the boat with George who was on the podcast, and you know, we were 11, 12, 13, and him barking at alligators and scared me to decking like a new dog, and making me think that they were coming to get us, and so it was frequent, it was frequent. And I wasn't the one participating in it all the time, but it was it was a known we had wild game suppers, it was just very commonplace in my house growing up.

I love it. And those of you that remember George being on the episode on the podcast, in one of his episodes, you told a story about fishing with your mom and how much fun how much she loved it, and a really funny story about uh fishing.

She grew up fishing and it was just kind of her um decompression time.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, awesome. Now, how did you meet Scott and what was that first impression?

SPEAKER_02

So Scott and I grew up going to a summer camp in North Carolina. Um, we knew of each other, but didn't had never had a conversation with each other, and it was actually Sarah's mom who introduced us. Scott had been in Cape Town for a couple of years and um was coming back, and Susan said, I got somebody I want to set you up with. And I said, It must be Scott Dickens because she had been talking about that he was coming home, and she said, It is. How'd you know? And so we went out and the rest is history.

What was uh at that first date? How'd he do? What was your impression coming off that first date?

SPEAKER_02

He did good, he did good. He was, you know, he was good, he was charming and playing some and all that good stuff. I will tell a quick story. Please come on bring it.

Oh yes, absolutely. I don't think that's really what we do here, Sandy.

SPEAKER_02

Well, it's telling him on myself more than anything, but I walked him to the door after that first date and kind of watched him go back to his car, and he walked to the passenger side of the car and then hesitated and went to the driver's side. And I had really enjoyed the date, and so I was like, Oh yes, I got him. Like, I love that. Like he was nervous, he went to the wrong side of the car, he's flustered. That's a good sign. And so I didn't tell him about that story until we were engaged. Like it was a long time before I had the confidence to tell him the story, and he totally deflated my balloon and said, Sandy, I had been in Cape Town for two years, and that's the side of the car that we drive on. I was just going to get in the car. I think. Okay.

That boy Scott. Oh, well, I'm sure he was still dazed though. Yeah, he still is.

He still is.

For sure. Um, did you so so you had an ex expectation? You knew Scott loved to hunt fish, you knew your family. I mean, you know what your brothers were like. They they love it. Has Scott, has he been outdoors more than you thought he would be, or has it been about what you expected, or a little bit better from a wife's perspective? What are your thoughts on his life in outdoors?

SPEAKER_02

Well, I mean, it's different when you have a family. I I mean, that's probably that's a long answer to the question, but when you have a family, it's a little bit different because you're on the different side of it, you know, and so from a wife's perspective, it's like, I need some help. But, you know, I've grown to appreciate that that's a de stressing time for him. Like that's the time that he goes and fills his tank and refreshes his soul, and um it's usually a little bit different as long as I don't have complaining as soon as he walks in the door, then usually he's a different man when he comes home.

So it's good to find that was awesome. Love it. All right, this is where I get nervous because I'm gonna shift over here to Miss Sarah Elizabeth. Sarah, um, tell us outdoors. Did you growing up, did you have any experience hunting, fishing, being out outdoors?

No, not at all.

SPEAKER_09

Not at all. That could lead to some Benny stories, but we'll leave those for another time. Uh Benny was is is my son, but he my son is named, our son is named after Sarah's father, who passed away 26 years ago this summer. Um but Benny was a great father, a great husband, a great man, a good father-in-law to me. Um, but he just didn't hunt and fish. He did some when he was a child, but as an adult, he did not. But uh my brother-in-law, Robert Satcher, who married Sarah's sister, he loves to hunt and fish, and I loved to hunt and fish, and so he did start to do some of that with us. He even took us on a couple fun trips together. I have to have Robert on sometime to tell a couple of those stories from our North Carolina duck hunting trip. But um how about me, Sarah? What did you think when you first met Steven? Tell him where you first where we first met and how blown away you were.

Well, I mean, you just took the words right out of my mouth. We were at Ambassador Camp, the same camp that Scott and Sandy met. We were 14 at the putt-putt course. And I didn't quite remember you. But the next summer we washed dishes together at camp. And I thought you were hysterical. You were a little obnoxious and a little fool of yourself, but you were so much fun. You were so much fun. And then I went to prom with you in high school, but we never dated. We just remained friends.

Why why didn't we date?

SPEAKER_00

You just had lots of other girlfriends back.

SPEAKER_09

I think of some redneck with a gold chain and an IRA Z, but let's move on.

Then after my freshman year in college, I was working at this camp, and we needed a boat driver the last two weeks. And you came down to drive the boat.

They were dead, probably. I'll tell you.

SPEAKER_00

And I was teaching water skiing. And uh the first night after worship we spoke and had not seen each other in like what two years?

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And I thought you were the sweetest. You had this big old smile, and you were just different. You were a gentleman, and I actually asked you, you said you were going down to the pier, down to the dock. It was dark. And I said, Oh, do you need somebody to keep you company? Thought for sure you'd say yes, and you said, No, I'll be fine.

Well, I was hard again. I was still a little bit scarred from pursuing her in high school. I wasn't gonna get into something too quickly.

Hey, Scott, I had to woo him hard.

SPEAKER_09

Oh, so hard. I did.

SPEAKER_00

I brought him cold Coca Cola's to the boat, and I would buy a whole pack of Starbursts and then pick out all the pink ones because the pink was your favorite. I worked really hard that two weeks.

Yeah, you thought it was a Starburst, but it was really the bathing suit. The green Walmart one piece. That's awesome. Now, I I admittedly am less of an outdoorsman than Baba or Scott. Um, I do like to go, and a lot of times I'm end up out there with them hunting or fishing. But I'll ask you the same question, 26 years later, or 28, I said, 28 years later. Was it more or less than than you maybe expected when we got married? And has it ever been a good thing or has it ever been awake?

I think probably more, in that I don't think I realized how much you enjoy being outdoors. Like you love to go just walk the woods, you love to go walk a piece of land, you love to hunt and to fish, but you also just enjoy being outdoors. And you love to say, Let's go for a short walk. And goodness, all the weeds and the bushes and the thorns and the sticky, and but I try to do it because I know you just love it.

You try to try it.

I try to do it. I try to complain. Um but you do enjoy the outdoors and you've uh created uh a love of the outdoors in our children, and so as Sandy said, it's a little bit different when there's a family involved because uh you're usually taking a child or children with you, and they're creating really good experiences with their daddy.

So well, thank you. Okay, that there's lots of ways that this this episode could go as we talk, because there's so many stories that are at the front of my mind that I've heard you ladies tell that I want our listeners to hear, and I'm I want to just bounce back to Kim and maybe we can start with Kim. Kim, I don't want to dictate every story, so there's gonna be other stories I want to make sure you tell when you want to tell them, but I'm gonna give you a leading question.

Um, have you ever made uh uh an impulsive purchase that Bubba didn't like and had to correct?

SPEAKER_01

Like Rainbow Vacuum? Three three things come to mind.

SPEAKER_09

Well, UAP I'm thinking about a household cleaning a product. Maybe that's the one. Rainbow back.

Rainbow back.

SPEAKER_04

Tell tell us about the rainbow vacuum. I think before you get into the Rainbow Vac, you got to go all the way back to May.

You kind of need my history.

SPEAKER_04

The first impulse of purchase that this is where I was like, I was like, Houston, we've got a problem. Okay, this is like when I come home from work one day, so you can tell what goes.

Well, you weren't even okay, so um I was I was out hunting and fishing wherever I came home from. No, you were working. I was not. And um at the time I was a full-time student and not working at all. And I had gone to lunch with my mom, and she had said, um, y'all need a nice bedroom suit. Y'all are newly married and y'all need one, and I agreed. Um, I'm usually one that says, yes, let's go buy that.

So um usually usually sometimes not.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, most of the time not, yes. And so we my mom and I went to the furniture store and I picked out a beautiful um bedroom suit that we still sleep on today. So it's been well worth every penny. Um, but anyway, um I bought it. I bought it and um set it up on 90 days same as cash and called Bubba. You save money. I think so. And called Bubba and he was at work and he said, Well, how was your day? I said, Oh, it was good. I said, I bought us a bedroom suit today and it'll be delivered tomorrow. And he said, Yeah, right.

Good response.

And we got off the phone and then he called me back and said, You haven't called me back to say you were joking. And I said, Because I wasn't. It really is coming tomorrow. He said, Who in the world would ever give you credit? You don't have a job.

And I did the same again. No sort of income. Like, how does that work?

SPEAKER_01

I said my husband had income.

SPEAKER_09

She looks trustworthy, buddy.

SPEAKER_01

I do, I do. So, anyway, um, that's when I got a part-time job, and I paid um for our entire bedroom suit with my part-time job, and um we still sleep on it today, so that was a good purchase. That was a great purchase. It might have started off a little shady, um, but it ended up being a blessing. And so, and then um one of the things.

Wait, can we can we talk about how y'all negotiated you beginning the job to pay for the bedroom suit?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, well, when he got home from work, um, we had deadbolts on our door, and when he got home, he came in and he deadbolted the door, and then we went to this room where all his hunt and vision things were, and he said, We're sitting on the floor, um crisscross applesauce. We're gonna be eye to eye. And so we sat on the floor, eye to eye.

It's a leadership principle right there.

And we um that's where the first time I ever heard UAP unauthorized purchase. When I heard it for the first time. Um and so he said, What you've done is you've committed a UAP unauthorized purchase. And so, anyway, that was the the first big one. And so we we kind of had an agreement, but I I didn't I don't always honor that really well.

Um the second big Well, when you start getting over like $2,000 worth, I think that honors maybe a discussion of sleep. And not only that, but my bedroom suit that I had, I got home and the other man loading up in the back of the truck.

I had a great feeling that I needed to make a payment on my defender suit. So I suppose it. Um so there's that. And then one other time I was having Bubba says I'm like a salesperson or infomercial dream.

And so I don't even know if y'all know about this one. This is a pretty dang good one right here.

So I was having a low day. Um Thomas was a little depressed. I was Thomas was a year old, and I just wasn't feeling really good about myself, and I felt like I needed to exercise a little bit. And this infomercial came on. It was a Saturday morning. Bubba was hunting. He was at the hunting club. And so Bubba was gone. And this thing came across, it was an infomercial for the leg magic with the K. It had a K on the end. It was not spelled correctly. And um I was like, I I listened to it for a little bit. They had testimonials about it. And basically, it was an exercise device that you it almost looked like a pogo stick. Like you jumped on it. And it was supposed to be life-changing and life-giving, and I felt like I needed it.

And so it was worth a UAP. The leg magic.

The leg magic. And so anyway, I ordered it. Um it it was 30 days. Same as cat. Same as Kevin. It was 30 days um free, and then they started you with payments, and so I was like, perfect.

Yeah.

Did you think, well, I can get another part-time job to knock out the leg money?

SPEAKER_01

I was teaching school, then I was working full-time, so I felt like I deserved the leg magic. I work. And so anyway, Bubba came home from the hunting club and he was like, Well, how was your day? I said, What was good?

And he said, No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

SPEAKER_01

No.

SPEAKER_04

No, no.

SPEAKER_09

Bubba, we have invited her home to the story.

SPEAKER_04

I just want to make sure she understands because somehow I can't remember exactly what it was. But you know, I was notified that we had this package coming in.

Okay.

SPEAKER_04

I can't remember what it was, but and it was like it was it was the lady baggage, which was a basically a spring. I don't know what it was. Very expensive.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, it was. It was several hundred dollars. Several. I mean, I was like, and I called, I was like, so Kim, what's what it was. You because Bubba is in charge of you know our money situation. Like he's the one who reconciles our check and account. And I think he had said, What in the world is this? And I said, Oh, that is the leg magic.

And he said, He didn't get excited about a leg magic. I mean, that would have to be good for him.

Well, I would say he got excited, but not in a positive way.

He was like, Did y'all go crisscross applesauce again? No.

SPEAKER_01

He was at that time he was um working at um the insurance office, and he, I don't know what he did. I don't know who he called, but he intercepted my package. I never saw the leg magic.

Never mind.

Let me just say this, okay. There's been plenty of purchases we made that have been completely acceptable to you. No problem. Some of these, my wife, I love her, and this is what I love about her. She is a little spontaneous and a little impulsive. Well, some of y'all know this. Quick trip, Kim, she'll go on a trip in a heartbeat. It doesn't make uh but and and I need a lot of that in my life. But she needs a lot of me in her life, too. We balance each other out very good. The little furnace together for a reason.

We really do. You know how uh they say sometimes if you're married long enough, you your personality starts to become like your spouse? Yes. Well, that I'm seeing that because Bubba, I mean, one of the things we struggle with on this podcast is I asked Bubba to tell a story, and he tells me three different stories before he gets to the fourth story. I ask him. The rainbow vaccine. And I've gotten two UAPs. Well, okay, that's right.

You gotta know the history. You gotta set it up.

I have a little bit of a history. Okay, and so anyway, so now we get to the big story, which is the Rainbow Vack. Well, um, this lady came to our house, and they only come if your husband and your wife are home.

Um who was your friend that set this up to? Gina. I think so. Oh, Gina.

SPEAKER_01

I think so. I love her. Um, and and she was leading me in the right direction towards the lady, I mean the the rainbow vac. I needed one. Um, but anyway, um they can Bubba and before the the sales girl even got to our house, he said, we're having a talk before she comes because I know you. We're not buying it. Like, we'll take the free gift, we'll listen, but we're not buying it. And I said, Okay, okay. Well, then the lady comes and it's amazing what it does. Like it cleans everything. It cleans. She took us and showed us how it cleans a mattress, our pillows, and then your bank account. It cleans she showed us what my vacuum was missing. And I said, Oh my word, my children have allergies. I have to have this.

It's a health thing.

It is health, exactly. It was for our health. And so medical device.

SPEAKER_08

But then Bubba had to leave on its no, Bubba had planned to leave to go to the swamp with hip buzz. Yep, he had to leave. And so he kind of took me aside again to reinforce. We're not buying anything, Kim. We're not buying anything. And I was like, okay.

Well, I really thought and I'll buy, let me uh, real quick, I'll buy a thing, but I'm not an impulse buy. Like, I'm gonna do some research on it. I'm gonna look at the bigger. It's gonna take me a while to buy something, okay? And and I was I was during the presentation. If you never sat through a rainbow vacuum presentation, it's impressive. It's pretty impressive. I mean, I was I was close to pulling the string, but I was like, I'm gonna have to do some research on this.

Right.

And it was like when they when you get in a vacuum cleaner and they find that's a long in a car, there's problems, okay?

Her cue to leave, because we weren't together anymore. But no, she just kept presenting. She saw Boba. And the more she talked, then the more, and then she said, Hey, if you buy this today, I'll throw in like these 30 attachments. And I was like, sold. I want it all. And so um I went, we went to the kitchen table, she pulled out all this paperwork, I signed my name everywhere. She said to, I bought everything. Everything, everything. My den was covered with rainbow vat and stuff. Attachment. Like Christmas. It was it was wonderful. I was so excited for her to get out of my house because I was gonna clean everything. I was so excited. Well, before the ink had dried and she had batted out the driveway above a call and said, Hey, I'm just following up that we did not buy anything.

Well, remember those previous stories.

And her quote was I bought it all. And you know what? At that point I learned there wasn't a need to call back and say you're not teasing because she was scared. I like it. So my next comment to her was I need that lady's number.

You need to call her, and she's come back, and I'm on the way. I'm less than 10 minutes away to the house, and you need to pack it up. It's going. And so she pulled in the driveway, she wasn't real happy. Um, she pulled back in the driveway. Uh, I didn't even get to say bye to it or use it or to break the plastic on it. And it was loaded up in her car, and she quickly left our house. So never got the leg magic, never got the rainbow vat, but we sleep on our same bed. That's what we do.

And that was fine, I'm telling you. And I promise we we buy plenty of things, and Kim buy plenty of things, I promise y'all. But some things that just were a little impulsive.

So anyway, Kim, I I've seen Bubba's hunting gear. It's he's got nice stuff.

I mean, he told me about them. I might not know all the good gear he has. He did have a little incident recently with some gear. Another little story that happened to him about a week or two ago, and he kind of slipped up and let own to his gear and what it was really worth. He had gotten a little ticket down at one at Atlanta. Yeah, gotten a little gotten a little warning. And anyway, he was like, uh, what did they want me to do? Leave my $500 rods on the ground? I mean, I've got a bunch of rods that were cost $500 each. And I said, Whoa!

Um, I mean, are there any unauthorized purchases? Uh, there's stories about those in the Chapin Dakins house.

There's been a few that I made or that he made. Either one. I'm I'm game. I mean, he's the spender of the two of us. That's true.

But yeah. One that comes to mind is the weird military vehicle that he bought. What was that called?

It was a K-5 blazer, right?

Yes. Is that a big one?

Yes, yeah. It was a Cuck V, but it's a K5 blazer. Yeah. Uh yeah. Military. That was a UAP.

That was a UAP. And we he had to have it towed to our house. Like it didn't even track. It it came in on a trailer that he bought because it had been sitting in somebody else's yard for a long, long time.

So you bought a trailer and no no no, I didn't know.

Oh no. That was delivered on a trailer.

Yes. So she means that it had to be delivered on a trailer because I bought it sitting in the trailer. And it wasn't running from the colour. Okay, gotcha.

And so it was delivered on a trailer and backed into our yard, no trailer, to sit in our yard.

I vaguely remember this. It was a nice uh ornament in the yard.

We have a lot of those, Steve. We are a little bit like the clampets in that way. That's true. There's a lot of ornaments in our yard. Anyway, it sat there. Isn't this the car that sat in the front yard at one point? Yeah, on garden hill. Yes, yes. Yes. And same house, which we had never had a problem with, within a day, there was a little mouse in our house that we had never seen ever before. Well, come to find out there was a nest of them up in this little vehicle. No. Strike one. Like that was big deal. So he finally, yeah, he liked something to tinker with. I mean he he figured it out. This was before AI, but there were YouTube videos and other stuff that he he got the thing running, but there was no reverse on it. And so he could only drive forward. That's actually good for me. I don't do good reverse. Unless you have no more room to go forward, and then you're kind of at a bit. So yeah, that was a weird one that I just didn't like. But I I just eventually I drove it for a while.

Um, and it was, I mean, it was a great conversation piece. It's you know, military camouflage, and so everywhere I drove it, it's a full-size K-5 blazer, diesel, you know.

Which was like a full-size Bronco back in the day. Don't think if you're thinking about a blazer of the last 20 years, it's not like that. It was the old school 80s K-5.

But like there were no floorboards or anything, it was all just like metal with holes.

Oh, yeah, there was there weren't formats. I mean, it was like bare bunt, like you think military great, it was everything was military in it. And uh anyway, we got it running and I drove around for a while, and then so I put it. I'm trying to remember if we had Facebook Marketplace back then. Maybe we did. I I know I put it Carolina Trader. In the trader. But some guy came and bought it. I paid $900 for it. I think I sold it for $2,700. Well, I didn't have to buy batteries.

I made money on it. And you reported that, right? That income? Well, I didn't make that much. It was below the reportable threshold. Yeah, I was just checking. You know, you got time and energy and all that stuff. And um, but I think the the most fun thing about the vehicle was me and Benjamin out there working on it when he was, you know, four or five years old. Although it did come with a rodent in it that we had to exterminate.

Maybe, maybe more than one. Um but it didn't have reverse, so you had to park it strategically, whether you're in a you know, grocery store parking lot or if you had a place to get on a hill. This was my kind of place on a hill. You just park uphill and then you let gravity do its work.

But I sold it to a guy who was gonna they they did these videos where they turned they transformed these off-road vehicles, and he was gonna turn it into like this camping outfit with a shower and a tent on top, and so he was glad to pay the $2,700 for it. That's awesome.

You might need some. I don't I just well, I tell you a funny story that actually happened today that doesn't involve us but our offspring. I'm gonna rat on Asa a little bit. Asa has Scott's gene. He loves Facebook Marketplace, he loves to find a deal, he loves to find something and flip it. In fact, he's often quiz Scott about four-wheelers and golf carts and things and taking some counsel from him. Well, today he shows up at our house. It sounded like an Apache was coming down the street. And it's Asa in a golf cart, a gas-powered golf cart that somebody has installed this new engine in and it has no exhaust. And it is very, very loud.

This is pretty cool. So he tells me about the deal he got and how cool it is. He's shown it to me. He lets me drive it up and down our street. And we come back and we park, we cut it off, and we talk a little bit more, and now it's time for him to go home. And we're talking some more. And I said, Well, uh, did Maddie like this? Is she pretty pretty pumped up about that? That is his new wife since December. And uh he goes, Yeah. Maddie's not real happy about it, but I promised her I'm gonna flip it quick. And I said, Okay, I kind of knew where this was going. And then he goes out there to leave. He's like, All right, see you guys later. He goes out there and he hits the start button and it won't start. And I could see, I mean, he was getting nervous and the sweat was beating up, and he was did not want to go home and tell his wife that the golf cart was back at my house and wouldn't crank. But thankfully, it was a weak battery. I was able to jump him off, and he literally goes, Thank you, Dad. You have no idea what you saved me from. I said, Well, I'll I'll do a lot worse than that in the future. I'll be right back.

That's exactly right. No, I really can't think of Sarah ever doing anything. Sarah, I've actually counted a spender in our family too. So I think more than Sarah, Sarah is not extravagant. She's I think she's always talked about anything that was significant that I can think of. She might have bought something on some infomercial at some point, but nothing that was as expensive as the magic legs.

I have uh another question and another story I really want to provoke from Sandy. I don't know. Um Sandy, uh I you've you've you've known this. You've learned you've come to know this. That Scott loves the Game Cocks. I love Carolina. I'm an alum. They're my team. But Scott, I mean, he's got it deep. I mean, even when we were kids, he loved it. When my dad would take us over to Williams Bryce, I mean, it he was all in from beginning to end. And even if we'd lose.

So Scott loved it, and he would get excited when we won, which it wasn't as often as we liked, and sad when we lost. There's a story where he loved it so much, and you're young and you're married, and you're living over there in Columbia at CIU, and he had class or work, and he needed you to record that game for him on the VHS. Yeah. Now, kids, those millions of kids that are listening, we have to get these VHS tapes and put them in the VCR and hit record and keep it on the same channel. You couldn't just DVR stuff back in the day. So she's tasked with this. Lots of instructions, right, Sandy?

Tell us what happened.

Let me give can I give a little backport backstory? So I had a Saturday class and it was an all-day thing, and I had instructed all my classmates like, look, you know, do not fill me in if you get updates. It's recording it back at the house, and I want to watch it not knowing what's going on. And this was this was Spurrier's first year as our coach, and we were playing Florida. So it was our first year him playing Florida again, you know, and that's where he became famous as a head coach, of course. And so it was kind of a big deal and big game. We weren't expected really to win because we were Carolina, and um, but we had him, and so there was a little bit of hope there, and so she was recording it back at the house. And my plan was to come home and we were gonna watch it and enjoy the game together, not knowing the outcome. So I get home.

Yeah, we didn't have kids yet, and so I was watching the game, not because I like Carolina, but because I love him and I wanted to be able to talk about a game with him whenever um he got home. And so I don't know a ton about football. I could just tell that this big play had like really happened, and you know, what was the guy's name?

I don't remember a defensive lineman.

It was a big defensive lineman. Like I'm I'm speaking to somebody who doesn't know anything about football, but it was a big fat guy.

It was a sack and fumble, and he scooped it up and he's running the score.

Cheers, go to commercial, and I'm just thinking he's gonna be so happy when he sees that. Like that's gonna be awesome. And then we've always loved to play jokes on each other. Like from the V I have another story about that too, but um we just uh we like to play jokes on each other, and so I thought it's gonna be so funny if I make it look like something technical happened with that. That'll be a great joke. And so while it's on commercial break, I pop that VHS out and put in a new one and start recording on the new one the rest of the game. And so he gets home from class, and you know, I've been home all day by myself, and you know, I'm an introvert, like I don't have a ton of words in a day, but usually I'm ready to talk by the time if I've been by myself and he gets home and so I'm ready to talk and visit, and like he is single task on that game, like turn it on. And so I was like, Okay, so we turned it on, and he set up big time. It gets to this play, and I could feel like myself getting tickled, and I was like, I gotta go to the bathroom. And so I just left. So he couldn't see me laughing, obviously. And so it goes to that play, and I hear him like fumbling around in there because the TV cuts off, like the game cuts off. Because you're that way, yes. He's cheering through this play, and he's like, Yeah, woo! And then I I hear this, and then I hear him like, What? Like all the background noise of like him trying to figure out what just happened with this TV. And he's like, Sandy, and I can't talk because I'm kind of laughing. He's like, Sandy. And I'm like, What? What is it? And he said, What happened to the rest of the game? And I said, Well, I recorded it on that VHS, and he said, Yeah, and I was I was I was just watching it and it it it's gone. What happened to the rest of the game? And I said, Well, I I I I don't know. Like, I put it on the VHS, you were watching it, like I'm confused what you're even talking about. So I'm rewinding it from He's rewinding it, trying to figure out what's going on.

Everything's happening night right here, and then all of a sudden it cuts off, and I'm rewinding it, cuts off, and I'm rewinding it, it cuts off. She's like, Well, did you try this tape over here on top of the VCR? I was like, What? She's like, Did you have another plug? Did you try another tape? I was like, Why would I try another tape? That that doesn't make any sense. And she pulls, she hits a jack. I'm dejected. She hits a jack. And she's pulling the tape out. I'm thinking, why are you sticking another tape in there? She puts the other tape in and comes back on and she just looks at me laughing. I was like, that's so wrong. That is so wrong.

Oh, that's I I remember that story because you guys have been married a couple years or less, and that's when I was like, Sandy was made for Scott. She's got him. Don't won't need to worry about Sandy. She's got him figured out for sure.

All right. Um, Sarah, um I'm not gonna give you any, I'm not gonna give you material. I'm gonna lead you to a certain story, but like those stories. Is there a story that you've had on your mind that unfortunately would be embarrassing for me that you that you want to share?

So I've just never done anything embarrassing. Right. That's the point. I've just always done what she's got the point. That's the point.

All right. Um uh Kim. Bubba is uh he's a high achiever. Wait a minute, are we just gonna leave it at that?

I feel like this is way too like yo, talk way too much of it. Everything's on uh good. I know there's more to the Sarah Stephen than than this.

How about I tell a story and then you can and then you could add to it details. What do you think?

Sure.

Sarah's not an outdoorsman, she does not like to camp. Um, but when we lived in Kenya, Kenya is one of the most beautiful. Places on earth. And they've got these game parks and these beautiful places to go see landscape and wildlife. But honestly, all of the lodging is built and caters to very wealthy people. And it's several hundred dollars per person per night to be in these experiences. And we could not afford to do that. We were missionaries. And so the only other way to do it was to camp. And so I say, Well, we're going to camp, Sarah. Like we're going to take these kids and we're going to camp a lot. And she didn't like it, but she understood that was a good way to get out and get everybody in the outdoors and seeing these things. So we began to camp. And one of our first camping trips was up to the Abadair Mountain Range. We were going to go fishing. And in fact, I convinced her that this place actually has a little cabinet. It's like uh, imagine it was run by DNR, but it was uh KWS, Kenya Wildlife Services. They had this little fishing cabin, very primitive, but you could rent it for uh $100 or something for a weekend. And so that's where we were going. And we were told it had hot water. And we were told that it had beds and a range, like a cooking, an oven. And so I was like, babe, this place, hot water, oven, bed. You're not sleeping on the floor, and we'll be outdoors and the kids can fish and play and run and raw. It's gonna be awesome. So she agrees. Well, you know, when you go camping, it's just a lot of stuff. And we're in a small little SUV that the mission board had given us and said there's no roof anywhere but on top. So I put all of our stuff on top. And we're driving up into these mountains, y'all, and we went through one of the worst thunderstorms I've ever driven through. I mean, it was hail, it was lightning, it was pouring down rain. I had to pull over at one point because the road was bad, and I was afraid we're gonna go in some big hole. So we get through all that, we finally make, we get lost, we finally get to this cabin four hours later, up in the middle of nowhere in this mountain game park. And we pull up to this little uh fish hut, and there's this little building to the right where like the caretaker sleeps. And we check in with him and we go over and we start unloading. The first thing I realized was everything that was under the tarp on top of my car soaking wet. Was soaking wet. I mean, like ring it out wet to the core. All of our clothes and everything. Well, okay, well, we're good. We're at least there's heat, a fire, right? And inside, shelter. So we go in there, and uh Sarah's like, I gotta take a bath. I'm freezing after we finish unloading. I was like, no problem, go take a bath. So she goes to cut the hot water on. I was like, just let it run for a little bit. Well, 30 minutes later, it's still putting out mountain cold water. I mean, mountain cold water. So I go over to the little caretaker, I was like, hey, Mustafa, um, there's no Mustafa. That was his name. And uh, there's like not Mufasa, but Mustafa. And so I was like, there's no hot water. And the website said there was hot water. He's like, yes, the uh the elephants, they knocked down the hot water tank. And I thought to myself, how many years has this guy been telling people that the elephant knocked down the hot water tank? So I was like, okay, I believe you, but I'm gonna need you to come tell that to my wife. I don't want to be gonna believe me. So we tell Sarah, sorry babe, we're gonna have to like heat up water or something. But I'll tell you what, why don't we go ahead and get some food, some supper prepared? And Sarah had made this casserole. Is that right, Sarah?

And what'd you do with the spaghetti casserole? We went in and there was no oven, so what?

So it was made in a 9x13 glass pan. I didn't know what I didn't know. And I put the pan on the stove eye. Oh no. And it went and glass went flying everywhere.

I got I'm talking about a bomb. Everywhere.

Everywhere. So that was dinner that we no longer have.

So we're wet, we're no hot water, and we're chewing like pulling up shards of glass from the chunks of casserole that we've been eaten off the floor in this African hut. But we were having fun.

I mean, seriously. The next morning though, Sarah, we had pancakes. You remember that? And we ate on that little porch. What did we see over there on that hill? Remember those elephants? Yes. It was amazing.

She can remember. Would they have like a water heater in their trunk?

I do remember the last time we went hunting, we sent the boys with satellite phones and we would radio. We went camping. We went hunting, hunting. Not hunting, camping. And we would check on them, and Nehemiah was like, I just saw leopard prints, a mama and a baby. And I was so nervous that our boys were two miles away from us fly fishing with no gun, a pocket knife, and a satellite phone with leopards around. But they're tough. Living their best life. They're tough.

Yeah, they can make it. They were doing good. That's our that was our boys' favorite place. That was their happy place, it was up in the mountains, about two and a half hours, three hours north of Nairobi. If you don't get lost, then it's four. But uh there's no right good times. Yeah, we've got some camping stores where it Murphy's law prevails. Everything that can go wrong does go wrong. But you gotta move through that, right, Bubba?

Bubba's a high achiever. He likes to win. He fishes a lot of tournaments. How grumpy, honestly, just us talking here. Yeah, we're not gonna tell anybody. How grumpy is Bubba when he comes home and has had a bad day fishing or hunting?

Hmm I wouldn't say he was grumpy. He's just quiet. Just well, no. Quiet. But then anytime Bubba goes h fishing or hunting, then there are the phone calls, the post hunt, post-fish phone calls, where we have to go over it in every detail with about 37 people. Well that's how you learn.

You gotta go there because you got no more mistakes.

That's what usually happens. And it's always amazing to me, like it's it goes on for a long time when he gets he walks in the door, and I'm certain that these phone calls have happened probably the whole ride back to the house. He's talked about the fish you didn't catch, and we used this, and we went to this spot and it didn't work out. And then I get to hear about it about 30 more times whenever he gets home.

I've been with him before where he'll fill those fishing calls from his buddies, and boy, they call up, they ask a bunch of questions, he's like, well, and he just is always avoiding them and changes the subject, moves around. He doesn't like to give out that info. Well, but if he's looking for the information, he's calling everybody.

You gotta remember Bubba doesn't really get down because he likes to keep a positive mental attitude.

Be amazed. Okay, so Bubba always keeps a positive mental attitude outdoors, hunting and fishing. Does he always keep a positive mental attitude dealing with marriage and family?

Not always. No, I'm the positive person in our home. Absolutely. I am. Um Bubba's great. Bubba is great, but Bubba in he probably doesn't have the most patience in situations, but he is fantastic and everything else, but he's just not quite as patient. I think as he's um aged a little bit, the patience has kind of worn a little thin. Um he says all the time, but he knows it. It's funny, he really knows it. Um but he is great. Great, I appreciate I appreciate him. He compliments me in all the areas where like I need the help, like the Lord just put us together. Because everything that I need help in, he's got it going on. And everything he needs help in, I've got it going on. I am patient. So there you go. It worked. It works.

And I think one of the things I do want to maybe tee up for uh us next time is a discussion of the idea of mostly legal and how it strikes you, ladies. Are y'all rule keepers? Are you rule followers? We'll talk about that a little bit more as well. No, I just like I will say this, you know, I we are all blessed to have amazing wives, and you know, I feel like we really do appreciate them as evidenced by like that first episode that we ever recorded, and we talked about how blessed we were to have our wives and everything, all of our wives and everything. And I know that Sandy felt you felt pretty special, didn't you, Sandy, when when Scott really just talked all about you and everything?

I mean, I like said we're uh as as Kim said it truthfully the Lord put us together because there's so many qualities about her that I need in my life, and and probably a little bit of me that she needs in her life, but but it really is amazing to see how we fit together because she's a lot of things I'm not, which is a good thing.

And I think they'll make it till morning.

They can fast and pray. Indeed. But no, in it in all honesty, she uh she puts up with a lot and she's very gracious. Um, we'll talk about this next time, but particularly about the podcast. But you know, she values because she loved it as a kid, the um opportunities I have to get our children outside. And so, and all my girls love to go as they've grown out, some of them have grown out of it now, but um, but they they still loved being outside and going to do stuff, and so she's been very willing to let us go get that experience together.

Well, it's been a privilege to, of course, grown up with Scott and to know Sandy since they began dating and have known Bubba almost all my life, and to know he and Kim as they've started from marriage to now. And uh, I agree that all three of us, the Lord has blessed with great wives, they compliment us very, very well and to put up with a lot of shenanigans and um tomfoolery, but they're they love us and are very encouraging. Um, so it's been fun. It's been fun letting our listeners uh get a sneak peek uh behind that curtain a little bit of our families, and uh they've heard us tell a lot of stories, and now they get to hear the people that know the real stories uh and and know what actually happened uh during all of these events that we've tried to carry on. Uh, we're looking forward to coming back to you next Monday for another mostly legal Monday, but we're gonna shift now to our word segment, and we want to uh thank you for listening. Hey y'all, welcome back to our word segment for this week. Uh, not the most outdoors episode we've ever had with the ladies, but it was a lot of fun recording, and it got me thinking about uh one of the central tenets or focus points of our podcast, which is family. Um, and having the wives reminds me of all the blessings that God gives us in marriage and in family. And so one of the passages that's dear to our family uh comes from my wife's side, the Roland family, uh, which is her mother's maiden name, and then my father-in-law, Maxie Knowlton, who you've heard us talk about occasionally, uh, uses this psalm, Psalm 127, often uh devotionally when we're uh around his family and he's talking about how the Lord has blessed them. Um I'm just gonna read, it's a short psalm, uh five verses, and uh encourage you with it a little bit. Uh Psalm 127 says this unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stay awake in vain. It is vain that you rise up, it is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil, for he gives to his beloved sleep. Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them, he shall not be put to shame. When he speaks with his enemies in the gate. And uh this psalm reminds us of the blessing of family and how the Lord has to be the center of our families. He is the one who puts uh families together, he's the one who sustains families, he's the one who opens and closes the womb and gives us children. And so I just want to encourage you to think through Psalm 127 from your own perspective. If you're not married and you're listening, use this passage to pray through as you uh consider who the Lord would have for you to marry and build that relationship on uh the centrality of faith in Christ and on the gospel. Um, and then if you are married uh and you know you're living life in marriage and all the struggles that that includes, uh use this with your wife, use this with your kids. Um remember that God is the one who is uh working in your family and blessing you. If you have children, those children are a great gift. Uh children are a heritage, and so take the time uh to spend with them, pour in them, invest is really what you're doing in your relationship with them, to raise them up, not just to love the outdoors, but to love you, uh, to love family so that they can see what that model looks like, have families of their own one day, bring you grandchildren uh that you can enjoy. Um twenty-seven is a great passage that encourages us to focus our relationship uh with our spouse around the Lord and uh let him be the center of uh your life together. Uh it's been a great blessing for our family. I trust it will be for yours, whether you have one yet or not. Uh, and may the Lord have you uh bless you as you consider and think about how his word just constantly encourages us and centers us on the things that matter the most. Have a great week.
