Oliver was born behind the Iron Curtain in the German Democratic Republic, known to most Westerners as ‘East Germany’. He first experienced a revolution as a proud member of the communist youth organisation, the Young Pioneers, when his infantile understanding of the world order, good and bad, was turned on its head, overnight, with the sudden collapse of the Berlin Wall.
Being obsessed with history and power politics from that very moment in 1989, Oliver spent much of his youth studying and attempting to understand the way history unfolds and how, sometimes, a small decision by a single person can change the future for generations to come.
