Safe Travels!
Hello friends, I'm your host Dave Leighton and welcome to Signs of Our Time, discovering America's Heritage, one sign at a time. This podcast is designed to provide the story behind the story found on America's Roadside Historical Signs. As you've driven around our great nation, you've probably passed by a historical marker with a blue star on it. Perhaps you don't know what they are for. Well in today's episode, I want to look at these markers and why they are important to us. The blue star memorial markers date back to World War II. Originally, families would hang blue star banners in their windows to signify that a loved one was serving in the military. A gold star meant that loved ones had made the ultimate sacrifice. After the war, the National Garden Clubs began a nationwide effort to create living memorials, something that would stretch across the country, just like the service and sacrifice of those they honored. And so the Blue Star Memorial Highway System was born. These markers, placed along highways, in parks, and at rest stops, stand as a tribute to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces. They remind us that our freedom comes at a cost. It's easy to overlook these markers. We've often focused on getting somewhere, appointments, errands, the next stop on our journey. But these signs invite us to slow down, even if it's just in our hearts. Because every blue star marker represents stories. These aren't just markers of history. They are reminders of people. In many ways, blue star markers point us toward a deeper truth. They remind us that love, real love, often costs something, sometimes everything. So what do we do when we see one of these signs? Here's a few simple responses. First, pause and remember even if you're driving, take a moment to acknowledge the sacrifice. We can give thanks. Whisper a quiet prayer of gratitude for those who served and those who will serve. Let's live with purpose. Freedom is not just something we enjoy, it's something we steward. And then let's teach the next generation. If you're with your children or grandchildren, point out the sign and tell them what it means. Because if we don't remember, we risk forgetting what matters the most. So the next time you're traveling, whether across the country in an RV or down a back road or just across town, keep your eyes open. Look for the signs, not just the blue star markers, but the reminders all around us that life is bigger than our daily routine, and that sacrifice is real. One last thing. Each year the William G. Pomeroy Foundation sponsors a National Historical Marker Weekend where everyone is invited to participate in cleaning and restoring a local historical marker in their area. This year, 2026, it will be April 24th through the 26th. You can go to the website to learn more about this activity and how you can participate. The website is wgpoundation.org. That's WGP Foundation.org. We have a Blue Star Memorial Marker outside our neighborhood. We're planning to clean it and fix it as participation in the weekend event. I've organized the kids in our neighborhood for the event. Well, friends, there you have it, a story behind the story from America's historical signs and markers. I hope you enjoyed this episode. I invite you to subscribe and continue listening as we bring more episodes about the rich heritage of our great nation. I'm your host, Dave Leighton. Thank you for listening and safe travels.
