E122: Finding Balance in Hormones, Weight Loss, Sleep and Mood: A Conversation with Kate Kelleher

What makes Kate Kelleher with BeBalanced Natural Hormone Weight Loss a good neighbor?
Your body didn’t “lose willpower” after 40, it likely changed the rules. If you’re exercising, eating well, and still dealing with stubborn weight, low energy, poor sleep, or a shorter fuse than you remember, the real driver may be metabolism and hormones, not effort.
We sit down with Kate Kelleher, owner of BeBalanced Natural Hormone Weight Loss in the Pittsburgh area, to talk about what happens during peri and postmenopause and why hormone imbalance can make the scale feel glued in place. Kate explains how stress becomes chemistry through cortisol, how physical stressors like under-sleeping, over-training, pain, and even restrictive dieting can keep the body stuck, and why understanding that connection can be a turning point for how you care for yourself.
We also get into a timely misconception: not all weight loss is good weight loss. With so much attention on medications and appetite suppression, Kate makes the case for protecting muscle, supporting the body’s natural balance, and using an individualized plan that includes food, targeted supplements, relaxation, and coaching rather than internet trends. You’ll also hear how BeBalanced attracts clients through referrals and education, plus how a complimentary consultation can offer clarity on what’s happening and what to do next.
If you’re in Pittsburgh, Kate shares where to find their locations and how to learn more at bebalancecenters.com. Subscribe for more conversations with local experts, share this with a friend who feels stuck, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show.

Welcome To Good Neighbor Podcast
SPEAKER_00This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Lila Carter.
SPEAKER_02Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a natural solution to weight, mood, energy, or sleep? One might be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, owner of Be Balanced Natural Hormone Weight Loss, Kate Kelliher. Kate, how's it going today? It's going wonderful. Thank you, Layla, for having me on. Thanks for being here. We're excited to learn all about you and your business. So please share more about your company or organization.
SPEAKER_01Wonderful. Well, at Be Balanced Pittsburgh, we serve women who are generally over the age of 40 throughout the Pittsburgh area. And generally speaking, they, you know, wake up one day and their metabolism has suddenly shut off, right? All of a sudden their bodies aren't working the way that they used to. They're still doing all the right stuff. They're exercising, they're eating well, but the weight just won't budge. And after 40, the conversation changes. You know, it's no longer just about calories, it's about metabolism. And metabolism is influenced by hormones. And after 40, hormones start to get imbalanced. And no matter what you do, you know, the weight, the weight won't budge unless the hormones get balanced. And so we really work with women in an all-natural way to bring those hormones back into balance. Our women will see not only weight loss, but they will also see uh improvement in mood, energy, sleep. And uh we focus not just on those results, but also maintaining. So that's a big differentiator for us. It's not good enough just to get results, but we also want to maintain those results as well.
Kate’s Story And The Cortisol Link
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. And it leads to an entire lifestyle shift for people, truly. So, how did you get into this business initially, Kate?
SPEAKER_01Well, my background is actually in corporate marketing, finance, management. Um, but like most women who hit a certain age, you know, I grew frustrated by my body just not responding um the way it used to. And what really drew me to this approach is that it focuses on metabolism and hormones and explaining and understanding how that works and influences the body. Um, take for example, like stress, right? We all experience stress and we all really focus on it mostly from a mental and emotional standpoint. But stress um, you know, produces the hormone cortisol, and that also can come from physical stressors, what we eat, how we sleep or don't sleep, how we exercise or exercise too much, or maybe even pain. And when women start to understand that, it can really be the pivot point in terms of being able to feel better.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. And I know sometimes as women, we just try and keep on pushing, you know, and push through the pain and just get to get through the day, right? And be there do more, eat less.
SPEAKER_01You've got it. Right, exactly. That doesn't work.
Myths About Modern Weight Loss
SPEAKER_02Yeah, truly. So, what are some myths or maybe misconceptions in this industry that you'd like to talk about today?
SPEAKER_01I think the biggest one, especially relevant um, you know, in the last couple of years, is all weight loss is not good weight loss, right? Um, it's not just about calories and it's not just about the number on the scale. There's a lot of conversation uh these days around injections, around medications, which you know are appetite suppressants. And that might be good tools for some people, but that's we but we take a different approach. Um, we focus on supporting metabolism and the body's natural hormone balance so that when weight loss happens, it's coming from fat, not muscle. And that's a really big uh difference and a big conversation point that we like to bring up. Um, because if you're losing it from muscle, you it's very hard to maintain that uh going forward. We take an approach where it's idualistic. Um, we generally take a very holistic approach. We focus on food, we focus on targeted supplements for that individual, not a laundry list of supplements, um, but generally speaking, a supplement small group there for that particular client. We focus on relaxation and coaching. I'd have to understand kind of what's going on with that particular person and what that particular person needs. There's a lot of stuff like on Instagram and TikTok that says, take this and you will magically feel better. Um that I just don't uh we we don't see that. We really like to take a holistic approach and understanding what the client is experiencing first.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and so whenever we're thinking about your marketing approach and getting to your target customers, how are you currently attracting them to the business?
Family Life And Outdoor Fun
SPEAKER_01I would say a good third of them come through referrals. When we start a client and on our program, they will get results and they will be able to keep the results going from a lifestyle perspective. And so we get a lot of our clients from a referral standpoint because people see their results and want to feel as good as they do. Um, in addition to that, we do run a number of webinars because what we really are about is education. I offer a number of different webinars to help um individuals just learn about us, learn about hormones, learn how things are shifting. It is a complex topic. And so one of the things we're pretty good at is reducing a complex topic down to something more understandable, more approachable. So, outside of work, Kate, what do you do for fun? Um, I have two children. Um, one is a high school biology teacher in a low-income district, and my other daughter is a competitive horse rider. Um, my husband is a uh professor at Carnegie Mellon University, so education is a big part of what we do. Um, and him and I enjoy anything outside. So, whether that's hiking, skiing, um, biking, um, you name it, traveling. We love, love, love to be outside.
SPEAKER_02My little nephew just got his first pair of skis this past winter, and he is so excited to be a little snow bunny.
SPEAKER_01So, you have a little harness for him. I had a little harness for mine until they were like six or something.
The Core Takeaway On Natural Options
SPEAKER_02Um, no, he's old enough not to have a harness, but he has like the matching helmet and boots and poles and all that. So yeah, he loves it. Okay, so Kate, please tell our listeners one thing that they should remember about be balanced natural hormone weight loss.
SPEAKER_01The one thing to remember is that there are natural solutions to um peri postmenopausal types of issues, whether that be weight loss or whether that be symptoms like mood, energy sleep. Um it doesn't necessarily have to be a medication, nor do we have to accept side effects from medications. There are natural solutions. Um, just because we're getting older doesn't mean that we should accept sleeping less, having joint pain, having inflammation. Like those things are not, they're common, but they don't need to be the normal. And we can help from a natural perspective without adding more drugs, without adding more chemicals, and without adding side effects.
Locations And Complimentary Consultation
SPEAKER_02I feel like there is a herbal remedy to nearly everything that you could ever face, right? Um, that we were given certain plants on this planet for a reason. And so um, yeah, I'm a huge proponent of that. Um, how can our listeners learn more about be balanced natural hormone weight loss?
SPEAKER_01Um, our website's a good place to start, be balancecenters.com, or you can stop in in any of our three locations. We're located in Murraysville, Wexford, um, and Cannonsburg. And typically we start with a complimentary consultation. It's an opportunity for a conversation about what you're experiencing and how we can help. And at minimum, you'll get some clarity about what's happening with your body and what's the next steps you can take. Yeah, what a blessing for the people who really need that support. Thousands of people we've we've helped, and it's just been a real inspirational being able to help so many people. It's the reason that I got into this to this field to begin with. Um, so that's really a great thing. My team too. They're all motivated by that same that same aspect.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you feel like you have your life back. Yep, that's exactly what we hear. Well, thank you for what you do, and I really appreciate you being on the show. We wish you and the business the very best moving forward, Kate.
SPEAKER_01Oh, thank you so much. I appreciate it. Nice to meet you today.
