In this episode of GL Deep Dives, Gorgorod takes apart the myths surrounding the Bardo Thödol, widely (and incorrectly) known as The Tibetan Book of the Dead. Far from being a spooky manual for the afterlife, the original text is a guide for consciousness, transition, and liberation, meant to be read to the dying as they journey through the bardos — the states between death and rebirth.
We explore how Western scholars misnamed and misunderstood the text, how its teachings fit into Tibetan Buddhism, and why the Bardo Thödol became one of the most distorted spiritual works in modern culture.
