What They Remember.… and Why it Matters
In this week’s quiet moment together, we step into the heart of memory. Why do some moments stay—while others fade like petals in the wind? Whether you’re caring for a loved one with dementia or simply reflecting on the stories that linger in your own soul, this episode gently explores the emotional fingerprints of memory… and why what they remember might matter more than we realize.
A whisper of insight, a pause for reflection, and as always—The Garden is waiting.
“They’re not fading… they’re retreating to the garden. Let’s meet them there.” 🌱

Every episode is a soft place to land, a whisper of support, and a reminder that you are never walking this road alone. So come on in. Let's take care of each other, one memory at a time.
SPEAKER_03:Hey, neighbor. It's Jess. And you're listening to Back to the Beginning, where we talk about the winding road of memory loss, caregiving, and everything in between. Today, I want to share something with you that I hope stays with you, especially on the hard days. They may forget words, but they remember the feeling. And that is everything. You see, long after names are forgotten, and facts fade, emotional imprint of an experience, how it felt, can linger in the body like a quiet echo, a song, a scent, a touch, the sound of laughter from the other rim. These things don't need to be understood to be felt, and in dementia care, Feeling safe and loved is so much more powerful than remembering why. That's why routines feel like rituals and why a hug can say what a thousand explanations never will. In our home, we call it the garden doesn't judge because when someone you love begins to retreat inward back to simpler patterns, childlike emotions, Hoo! Hoo!
SPEAKER_00:One time, Glammy Claire made cinnamon toast on a pink plate with little roses on the edge. She called it fairy bread. She told me, every bite makes you stronger, but only if you eat it slowly. I don't remember if I was sad that day, but I remember how warm the toast felt in my hands and how her voice made my tummy feel better than any medicine.
SPEAKER_03:That's the magic, isn't it, Shy? What we remember is how they made us feel. So if your loved one is slipping away from the facts of their life, don't chase them with logic. Walk beside them with love. Offer small things with big intention. A favorite song on repeat. The same teacup each morning. a soft scent of lavender at bedtime, a silly nickname only they would remember. These things anchor the heart, even when the mind lets go, and you, dear caregiver, are their anchor. Let them forget your name, but never how you made them feel, because love lives where memory can't reach. This is Jess reminding you that sometimes The way back to connection isn't through remembering. It's through feeling. Until next time, we'll be right here with you, back at the beginning.
SPEAKER_01:Thanks for joining us in the Sandbox. Be kind to yourself. We'll see you next week. on Back to the Beginning.
