Coom & Currie Sports cards
Remember that rush of excitement when you found a special card in a pack as a kid? That nostalgic thrill has evolved into something much more powerful for today's collectors.
What begins as an innocuous purchase—a Tyler Lockett card from Pike Market in Seattle—quickly transforms into a full-fledged obsession that consumes both time and finances. Our hosts share their remarkably similar journeys into the trading card world, despite focusing on different sports: one drawn to NFL cards, the other to football/soccer.
We candidly explore the psychological elements that make card collecting so addictive. From the adrenaline rush of opening packs to the thrill of scoring a rare find online, both hosts acknowledge their struggles with "throttling back" their spending while maintaining their passion for the hobby.

From Petrol Mishap To Earthquake Thrill: Coaching, Collecting, And Comebacks
The night shed. Bonfire crackle. A milestone that actually means something. We kick off with pure chaos energy—improvised lighting, a landmark episode number—and then swerve into a coach’s reality: a brilliant young keeper sidelined, rules blocking a replacement, and a long drive home capped by the most expensive mistake a tired mind can make. Four hours, a drained tank, and a team of teenagers who now have a story for life. Chaperoning turns into quake-watching as a short, sharp New Zealand earthquake rattles the decking and resets the mood.
That reset threads into football. We open up about Liverpool’s seven-game wobble, a gritty correction against Villa, and a performance against Madrid that felt like a corner turned. It’s tactics and tempo—full-backs pressing, midfield legs, shot creation—framed by the very human weight of grief in a close club. We talk price tags, pressure, and why context matters as much as metrics when you judge a squad finding its feet again.
Then it’s the NFL heat check. Seahawks look almost complete: JSN scorching, defence clamping, run game searching for daylight. A speed signing might stretch the field and unlock the ground attack. Packers get a balanced read—promising darts from Love, defensive lapses to fix, and a tough slate that will sharpen edges. Along the way, we rip mail and compare products with a collector’s honesty: DAKA’s surprise quality, Leaf’s place for accessible autos, Phoenix base that outshines some inserts, Mosaic’s pop, and Impeccable’s heft. A Gerrard PC binge brings structure—Project22 slabs, Deco’s Gatsby sheen, Futera’s unlicensed charm, and numbered Galaxy cards that hit the sweet spot between niche and nostalgic.
We close on the big hobby question: Kabooms. The new design splits opinion, and the first-off-the-line purple variant raises the dilution debate. More access for mid-tier collectors might mean less prestige for purists. Where do you land? We’re shifting releases to Fridays, lining up breakers and friends of the hobby, and planning live segments from Fanatics London and the Guildford Card Show.
If you enjoyed the ride—from petrol panic to product picks—follow, share with a collector mate, and leave a review. What’s your current PC focus, and which product actually delivers for you?
Welcome to the Coombe Curry Sports Cards Podcast where collecting meter game. Welcome back to an overdue episode of episode 20 from Podcast Vendors. Here we are.
SPEAKER_00:20th episode. That has to be a milestone.
SPEAKER_01:Well, landmark, landmark episode, and um yeah, we've had a slight delay since the last episode due to uh clocks coming back and timings, and um so there will be a new new confirmed day um of when we release uh these episodes. But um as you can tell if you're watching, good morning to Coombe in New Zealand.
SPEAKER_00:And yeah, look at that. Bright weather. It's always dark in here, usually, isn't it, for the pod.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, and I come live from uh from a mild shed, uh surprisingly enough, in on on bonfire night of all nights. Um and I have with me a uh lamp from the corner of the lounge, which I've uh commandeered.
SPEAKER_00:Which uh we'll we'll we'll look back on these days uh when we get to the a thousand pepper side and refer to them as the glory days, and you have to take a hinter out to the shed.
SPEAKER_01:I mean there was there was uh some raised eyebrows from the wife when uh I unplugged the lamp, but uh we move on and said uh need much darkness. Well, the thing is I was setting up early and I thought obviously it's the first time I've done a nighttime one. And obviously I'm in the shed, and I thought I need some lighting. I need some lighting, I could and I thought about grabbing some some fairy lights from the garage.
SPEAKER_02:Is the lamp within reach? Yeah, can you turn it off? Yeah, I can. Yeah, come on, let's have a look.
SPEAKER_01:There we go. Hello, darkness, my old friend. Oh yeah. Absolute darkness. Um so yeah, we've got it is bonfire night. There has been some fireworks going off, um, but the only fireworks that are going off in air. That's from Kevin Curry Sports Training Class episode 20.
SPEAKER_00:Episode 20, I can't believe I I briefly listened to um a bit of episode one the other day. Uh we're probably not much better now, to be fair, but the first one was just like I remember we were saying like we're chatting before, and as soon as that um you get the five, four, three, two, one to start the recording, you sound we were like proper robotic. So I think even now we sound uh a bit more relaxed, we're probably not quite there, but all part of the process. That's it, yeah. MC, I've got some stories for you. We obviously you did your solo show last was it last almost two weeks ago now, wasn't it? Yeah. Um, but I've been up to Napier for for two different football tournaments um two weeks in a row, and I have got some stories. Um I've been waiting, I've been waiting for these stories.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:I shall get into it.
SPEAKER_01:Please, please. I've I've been waiting for these these stories for uh for a while now, so yeah, jump into it, BC. Let's let's let's hear it.
SPEAKER_00:So let's go, Napier Trip 1. I'm I coach football, um, and it's a big national uh under 19s tournament, probably the biggest tournament in the calendar over here in New Zealand. Um I'm coaching North Wellington, Women's side, we go up. Uh we were rocked by an injury, our goalkeeper, right? Friendly before. Uh if she's listening, I'm not having a dig. Um Chinese girl, she's called Young, she's over here on like uh like an exchange or something, and she's unbelievable. She's really short, but she's like she's such a good goalkeeper. Um but I have to question her decision making. She so we had our last friendly before the tournament the Saturday before. She comes off injured, right? She's injured her ankle, right ankle. Um, so it's like a race before time to get a fit for the tournament. That week she decides to go to futsal, plays futsal, injures her left ankle. Uh after I'll cut a long story short, we she I had to make the hard decision. She I I took her to the physio myself. They said she can't play. Um, so we had to obviously we got to look after her. So she was ruled out. We tried everything to get a replacement keeper, competition rules wouldn't allow it, they weren't they wouldn't budge. Uh so unfortunately that had a massive effect on our tournament. Didn't didn't do too well, but we had a good time, really good time. So it was nice being with the group and whatnot. However, it's very case interesting. Now, my my career, nearly 20 years as a security engineer, cameras and stuff like that, travelling all around the UK. I've clocked up a fair few miles. Alright? Never in my life have I made the mistake that I made on the way home. Oh, yeah. So we pull into the petrol station, right? We've got these mini buses, and um now I'm gonna get the excuses early. I'm in a lot of pain. Got some sort of trapped nerve or something in my leg. Um, it's been a long weekend. And uh the assistant offered to drive back. So he's driving, he pulls in. We need to get some fuel. Probably see where this is going already. We uh I say I'll top up. I confirmed it's diesel. Yeah, it's diesel. It says diesel everywhere, there's stickers everywhere that say diesel. And uh I get out, look at the pump, there's two nozzles, obviously green, petrol, and there's a red nozzle. Now I was tired. I didn't know what I was doing. I got the red nozzle, I've put it in, and I started feeling, and I and over here, I know you think we don't have them in the UK, if you have a little catch, and then you can like lock it on so it just fills itself. So I'll get in my uh wallet out of the boot, and then as I come back, now I can't really explain this to this day, but I'm looking, you know, when you feel something's not right, you can sense something's not right. I'm looking at it, and then I kind of looked at the pump and I was like, huh, that says premium unleaded, and I'm like, yeah, and then I look round, and then there's another pump to the side, which is diesel, the black pump, and I'm like, oh shit, I've only gone and filled the whole thing up with petrol, and I right, but yeah, no good. That is a shock. So, first thing is I tell the whole team who are all on the bus, I've got a load of 16-year-old girls. I say, You're find your parents, you're gonna be late home. They're like, What? What are you talking about? And I'm like, I've gone and filled it all up with petrol, and then and the assistant's going, nah nah, you're joking. I'm like, no, I've filled it up with petrol. Nah, nah, nah, you're joking. No, I'm not joking. I've I've just filled this van up with petrol. Do not turn the van on. Uh, so we had to like get it in neutral, bang it into a bay. Uh cut a long story short, four hours later,$800. Uh, someone's come out, drained the tank, cleaned it up. But we managed to get uh like another car and got the players home and that, and then uh, like I said, four hours later, I'm driving back on my Todd in uh in the minibus. So it was a dark moment for me. That that was a that was that sounds like a low point. Yeah, big time. Um but you know it's a story for them, that's what I told them. One they won't forget. But also on the same trip, right? So we were I was gonna get the players on, actually had players lined up um to come on, it was gonna be good, but the perils of youngsters takes me back to the youth. Um how do I put it? I spent most of that evening trying to kick boys out of girls' rooms, you know, confiscating beer and stuff like that. Um, and then we me and my uh mate were on patrol, so we're standing, it's eight minutes past one in the morning in Napier, we're standing on like a deccan to uh like a villa, if you if you will, and then uh we're chatting away, right? All of a sudden, hear this it sounds like an explosion. Like, what the hell is that? And I said to him, It's like an explosion, and then it was just this rumble, and I turned around to him, I was like, What the hell is that? And then all of a sudden, for about three to four seconds, the whole place just shakes. My first New Zealand earthquake. Wow, um, but they yeah, there's been a I mean, there's earthquakes almost every day, like little tiny ones, and there's a look like a website you can go on. But since I've been here two and a half years, I've never felt one. That was the first one. Um probably not supposed to say this, but I felt euphoric after. I was like, oh, what an experience.
SPEAKER_01:You felt like a new man.
SPEAKER_00:I did, yeah. People coming out of their rooms going, oh, the bed was shaking. I was like, fucking, I'm stood here on the decking and the whole thing's going like this. It was only it was probably I'll say three to four seconds, but it was um yeah, probably shouldn't say it, but uh enjoyed it.
SPEAKER_01:What do you mean it made you like made you feel alive, made you feel like one as one with with nature? What's uh yeah, probably connected to nature.
SPEAKER_00:I'm a survivor. You are incredible, yeah. Connected to nature, yeah. It was uh I'll tell you what, it was a trip that had it all. Um this weekend I've been up to um Napy again for the Masters for the old the oldies to play, and uh despite my trapped nerve, I managed to referee seven games, um which I am now suffering for. Um so yeah, but it's uh it was a yeah, good couple of weeks, and uh I think I spent I was chatting to you before, so you know, with the podcast and that it's it's it's good because there's people that that I wouldn't expect to have listened to the pod or whatever that mention it. So there's a guy I was telling you, Hari is one of the referees. He said to me that he listens to the pod quite regularly because obviously he knows me, and it and this is this is it's funny actually, because I said this, you know, like if you know someone, like I think my mum listened to like 10 seconds and thought now I'm bored now, probably never listened again. And uh it makes me laugh because he if you know someone who's doing a pod, it's probably there's a bit of curiosity, and I think that's what he said. But Hari did mention that he wants us to talk a little bit more about football, both footballs from my point of view. So I don't know about you, MC, but I think we should start with um with Liverpool. What's going on?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, first of all, um shout out to Hari. Uh thanks for uh your kind words and listening. Um uh Liverpool, yeah, it's been a difficult period over the last what seven matches prior to to the villa match last Saturday. Um just felt like something hadn't really clicked. Like we've got all this talent. Um I don't know if it was like tactically we weren't getting it right. It felt like we were maybe pushing too many people forward, um leaving ourselves exposed at the back, which is why we were conceding, but we were also scoring. So yeah, felt like there was a obviously a great result against Villa. That was a huge game, uh it was a must-win, really, to sort of stay within reach. Um good performance. Um got lucky with probably with well, the mistake for the first goal and then the deflection for the second. Um but you know, we needed to break that sort of pattern of of just just losing and and conceding, um you know. It was a much better performance, I think, wasn't it? Yeah, I felt like there was like a lot more sort of ethics behind it and a bit more the work rate was more, I don't know, felt more I don't know, just felt that there was more work rate from players. But um look at you look at the Madrid match last night, um it was a superb performance against you know the Rainland Champions League champions.
SPEAKER_00:Um and they were absolutely all over them, weren't they? It was like um to be honest, I've not watched a lot of uh you know, you know, funny enough, where I've been saying like I'm more into the NFL uh this year. Um all my life, like I barely missed a Liverpool game. Like, and since I've moved over here, I think I've maybe missed one or two where I've been um on a course, I think it was, and can't remember what the other one was. Um you know, keeping the phone down there what you're looking at, I think. Uh but I I haven't been watching the Champions League games, but I thought I'll watch the Madrid game, but honestly, like the the work rate and the you know compared to this season is just hopefully touch wood that that's a turning point because Madrid barely got a look in.
SPEAKER_01:I mean, yeah, you look across the board. I mean, I thought, yeah, Roberts and Bradley at fullback were um superb. Um I thought Bruno Grande absolutely pocketed Lenny Jr. He was phenomenal, but um, yeah, all across the board.
SPEAKER_00:I think that's a good move.
SPEAKER_01:100%, isn't he? Like he's like vice captain as well, isn't he?
SPEAKER_00:So yeah. He's um Kirkz will be a good player, but I think he and that's why he's there, isn't it? Because everything at Liverpool stats driven, and I think you can't argue with how he was at Bournemouth, but they play a different way, and I think it's evident early on that that he struggles with that. So I feel like yeah, he it will probably work out well and he'll be a good player, but I think it just needs to give him time to adjust to that different way of playing.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, 100%. Um and I thought, yeah, I thought across the the whole team. I mean, I was looking at some stats this morning of you know, Vert's covered the most amount of distance on the pitch and created five chances in the first half, more than the whole Madrid team. Um create, yeah, got into creative create. I don't know if it was the first half, maybe the whole match, but created like five opportunities. Um and I just thought, yeah, he deserves a lot of credit for that because he's obviously come under a little flat with a price tag, but um you can tell he's got the quality. Um and subscribe was fantastic as well. He's been good this year, yeah, yeah, he has, and I thought Eka TK's um a breath of fresh air up top. I think he's just so confident on the ball, isn't he? It just seems to like just ooze his confidence running the players. And you know, sometimes I've watched Salah this eat Salah this season, and you know, I love him, but when he's not confident, he really shows that he really goes missing in matches.
SPEAKER_00:Um, I have question on that though, with with Salah, for example, right? And I'm not uh on Coom and Curry sports cards, we don't beat around the bush, so I'm gonna be quite blunt with this. Okay. It's something I've been thinking about quite a bit because we obviously in the football world we get little lots of banter off our mates and that. The second Liverpool lose, the fucking group chat lights up, doesn't it? They love it. Um but I was thinking about this. If your if your best mate dies in the circumstances that that Jotter did, that must be hard, not only for the players, but for players like Verts coming in. So we get yourself and I we get a lot of stuff off side, don't we? SB, he only ever crops up when Liverpool lose, or he's doing well at fantasy, but he he's proper laying into Verts. So every time he has a bad game, oh Verts is shit, or what do you think of Verts and all this sort of thing? But imagine he's got that pressure from the price tag, but he's coming into a changing room where they've kept Jota's seat there, haven't they? And that must be a weird fucking vibe to come into that. Um, and then you've got the players struggling. Um, and I think that that that that must have a massive effect on the team, surely, surely that is a contributing factor to um, and and you have people going, oh excuses, it's not an excuse, or you're using his death as an excuse. No, it's just stating facts, isn't it? Um I don't know how you how you can expect Liverpool. I I've got to admit, when I first heard that news, one of the first thoughts I had as a Liverpool fan was well that's the season done then, isn't it? Because that's hard to come back from, that's gonna take time.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, yeah. It's a crushing, crushing bit of news, and yeah, it's um I think I saw uh an in and the inter well, I did I watched an interview with RNA slot and um Ali McCoist. And he was like, How do you take on the grief of of of him, not not only for the club, but for the essentially the city? He's like do you you do you have to like it's just part of the there's such a close community there that you know he has he has he had to play his part in you know consoling the the players and and fans and um and then sort of at the same time just continuing with his job and it was just like yeah super difficult obviously. Um so yeah, it's hard to contend with with the that news for the players to continue in the same rich vein of form they did last season, so yeah, it's good to for them to get out of that that losing spell and get a couple of um a couple of wins on the drop. But yeah, that that's it's got you know the death of uh that's got me thinking, MC. Yeah, go on.
SPEAKER_00:If uh if something happens to me or you who but the show must go on, obviously.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Um I wouldn't like you to spend a lot of time I think they said this on top here, didn't they? Um you can make reference to it and then it's right in other news and we crack on. Who replaces me? I knew that pressure was happening.
SPEAKER_01:Um who's replaced me? Jesus.
SPEAKER_00:Um how's how's your luck, Dom Lot?
SPEAKER_01:Dom Lot is uh two to one. Yeah, two to one odds on at the moment. Um Huggins got uh gotta have his name thrown into the hat. Um yeah, HJ.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, um especially we're talking football, it'll be alright. HJ's um he's a funny one with football though, isn't he? Like he goes to a game, Brighton lose, and he'll tell you it's the worst, worst referee I've ever seen. He told me that about a hundred times in his life. Every time Brighton lose, ah it's worse ref.
SPEAKER_01:Shout out Duggins, I know he listens every week. Uh big fans. Um let us know who you'd like to replace King if he uh unfortunately was the full death, but uh yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Anyway, um all right, does replace me?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, so who would replace me then?
SPEAKER_00:Um I don't know. I'd have to do I'd have to do a couple of solo shows while I hold um I hold a uh what's it like a trial? I've got an advert out. What would I change the name of like you know, someone called Smith comes in? Smith and Coombe cards. Sounds shit, doesn't it? Doesn't have a quite ring same ring to it, but exactly, yeah. Um nah you'll be alright boy. Um the show the the show will go on. And imagine in your absence, just just having you on screen, I'd have to get like Hannah to come and log you in from the shed just so I can see the shed as a tribute. And then right at the end, after the show, we could get her to just sneak back in and turn the lamp off. I um before we move on to Seahawks, because I want to have a quick chat about the Seahawks, it's only right um because they are on fire. But I've uh I know we've got our usual segments, but uh this morning I received um a package from Card Crazy, and this is how they're received. Um so I thought that I would open them on the pod, just so there's a bit of context to how I'm receiving because it's it's it one of the interesting things for me is you talk about your care packages from Stu and stuff like that, and there is a difference in obviously how those breaks are conducted and how you buy in, and I guess how you're receiving your cards and whatnot. So we'll we'll move on to that in a bit. But um Seahawks, you said to me at the start as well, they're flying, aren't they? Absolutely on fire, yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Absolutely flying, obviously, superb um in superb form. Um actually watched the Green Bay highlights yesterday. Um surprising.
SPEAKER_00:Don't worry about Green Bay, just keep on topic.
SPEAKER_01:Alright, yeah, Seahawks doing really well, well done. Um what he's doing right, isn't he?
SPEAKER_00:He's on um yeah, he's on on to on target to get the uh the all-time receiving yards in a single season. Um yeah, phenomenal. He's on at the I think the record is I think his name's is it Calvin Johnson? They called him Megatron. Um I think he's 1,900 and something, but I think at the minute JSN's projected at over 2,000, uh, and he's currently the highest uh in the league as it goes. Um but I've got uh yeah, so obviously Darnold and JSN, I mean Darnold the other day had 16 uh throws completed, which I think some sort of record as well, without um a non-completion. Um so the way they're playing is phenomenal, but they signed um R Rashid Shahid from Saints uh for the the deadline, and he is a fast receiver, he is seriously fast, but straight away I'm thinking, is that is that gonna detract from JSN? How's that gonna work? Um but I think the one thing at the minute, like I was I listened to a few podcasts and clips online from you know Seahawks fans and stuff like that, and they're talking about I think a lot of people would say at the minute the Seahawks are they are the complete package almost. Uh so the defence is on fire. Obviously, you've got um Cooper Cup um the experience he brings and the effect he's had has been phenomenal. You've got JSN who's just on fire. Uh, but I think the only thing at the minute is the run game. So you've got Kenneth Walker and Charbonnet um and not having major success there. So I don't know if um you know the benefit of actually having Shaheed with his pace and that is gonna perhaps open things up um on the pitch to allow the run game to or you know to help the run game maybe. Um but you know like what I'm what I'm seeing from Seahorse, the years I've watched them, you watch you know they've had some good wins and stuff like that, but it's never a little bit like Liverpool, it's never comfortable watching it. But this year it's just phenomenal. We've got uh I think it's Cardinals this week at Lumenfield, so the show will go on.
SPEAKER_01:Um yeah, it's um I'm sure you're absolutely loving watching each match. Um Green oh can't can I talk about Green Bay now? You can.
SPEAKER_00:Permission granted.
SPEAKER_01:Thank you. Um yeah, they're looking they're looking good as well, just defensively, they're looking a little bit there's a couple of um of defensive errors, but other than that, still doing really well. And yeah, Jordan Love had um um a match where he did like yeah, I think it was like 13 or 14 completed passes, so he was he's on fire as well. Um but yeah, the Panthers lost. The Panthers lost was obviously Panthers were a big underdog, so it was a surprise winning the last time. Yeah, last night field goal. Um and then I think it's this weekend. Um I think they're playing Colts.
SPEAKER_00:Um yeah, it's gonna be that's gonna be odd.
SPEAKER_01:Should be a tasty, tasty affair. Um double check actually, so we'll look but yeah, enjoying enjoying getting to know like the squad um or the all the players in Green Bay because like I said, obviously getting back into it. And you've got craft and cobbs um for Green Bay who are sort of stand out, stand-up players for me. Um so yeah, long may it continue and who knows comes Super Bowl chief. You know? You've you've got Eagles, mate.
SPEAKER_00:Eagles, Tuesday the 11th, so you're Monday night football. That's uh that's gonna be a game to watch, innit?
SPEAKER_01:Eagles. Do you know do you know why I think I I thought it was Colts? Because I was looking at matches for when you're back. And I think there is like a Thursday night where Seahawks are playing and Packers are playing at like 6 pm UK time.
SPEAKER_02:Right, okay.
SPEAKER_01:They're both playing at the same time. So Thursday night football, that could be um I think we've got cults and you've got can't remember who you've got, but that could be one for the diary chiefs.
SPEAKER_00:I think I'm meeting off, got a date in the diary of Lemmers actually, um to meet and watch a game. Might be 30th of November off the top of my head, so see what you're doing. Um that could be good. But yeah, you've got you've got Eagles, then Giants, Vikings, Lions. That's a tough run coming up for Packers. Um separate the men from the boys, I think. Certainly will. Um I'll uh be tuning in for the Eagles, but yeah, lit Seahawks though. I looked at the schedule in full the other day, so we've got um Cardinals coming up this week, which I think will be another win for Seahawks. Got no issue there. We beat them earlier in the season, same division, so we played them twice. Then the one that I think is gonna be interesting is the Rams. So just looking at the schedule now, we've got Cardinals, uh yeah, then Rams at their gaff. Um that's gonna be a game that and then Titans, no problem. Vikings, Falcons, Colts, that's gonna be a game. That is gonna be a game. But I think um Seahawks are a gotta be a dark horse. They've got to be a dark horse for a Super Bowl run, I think.
SPEAKER_01:Um time will tell. Time will tell.
SPEAKER_00:Time will tell, yeah. Get get get JSN one of them Super Bowl rings.
SPEAKER_01:What the um I just had a thought about um a certain segment of the of the pod and a certain binder that'll be going out for competition. Green bait.
SPEAKER_00:Lovely. Just what I'm doing, oh got those Romeo dubes. Nice. I've got you sorry, I'm opening uh as we're talking, so I was showing earlier the I wanted to save opening these just while I were on the pods. I thought I'd casually open them while we're on it just to see what we got. And what I've decided to do was for all about that base is I'm gonna select one of these. Um, but as you know, MC, I've got you a nice little stash of green bay cards uh for when I come back, but yeah, carry on. Sorry, I rudely interrupted.
SPEAKER_01:Um yeah, what was it saying? Oh no. idea oh sorry it's talking about the binder um brilliant yeah yeah um surely in the net and in the coming weeks we have got to get a well a packers and a seahawks base into the binder surely yeah yeah I think I think I had a um I think I put an AJ Barner didn't I I've got a tin with the all about that base but what I need to do is recap on what we've got I might bring them over and we can get a binder there's that firm in the UK that do grading I think Wade did one where the where you can pick the the colour theme maybe we should use um one of those when we grade our all about the base card um but yeah what I'll do is I'll have a recap of the cards that we've selected for all about that base and bring them with me and then maybe while I'm with you we can start to decide what we're gonna get graded and how we're gonna run the competition because it's a a seriously nice collection in it yeah sounds like a plan for me Chief um I mean whilst we're on the whilst we're on the topic should we jump into that all about the base yeah let's do it all about the bows there go nice have you got yours lined up I I do I have um quite an interesting one actually um I guess this is a good segue into into discussing what I'm putting in and why yeah um so I've recently been jumping on um uh a break on whatnot call a guy called Jay Breaks um really cool guy sound guy he but he was doing he was doing like a I guess like a dual box break so he had two boxes he had uh and a Netherlands and Belgium national football team um and they were the brand was DACA have you heard of this heard of this brand no so it was DACA um it's a car obviously a card making brand um yeah and uh basically you buy you buy in so you like you buy in to get um he had like a player from Holland and a player from Belgium and they were like that's who that's who you were auctioning for so say it was like I don't know like De Bruiner and you know like Ronald De Bohr um to go up for auction if you wanted to buy into that so it started at like a pound um and so forth and and and so forth and there's like Gakpo and Trossard so all these different variations of players um I've gone into it twice now and I've really enjoyed it and the cards are pretty cool.
SPEAKER_00:I pulled this got delivered um today so this is this was the best pull I got from the last one and it is um there you go it's uh Brian Bobby oh yeah um Holland and it is numbered 35 to 75 a nice car brand it's called DACA D-A-K-A looks like we've also been looking at another brand called Leaf I don't know if you've heard of this brand Leaf yeah yeah yeah that the cars they're great but I was just looking at them but DACA DACA cards are pretty cool um yeah Leaf Leaf has some good autos but it's not yeah it's like uh I don't know maybe we need a seasoned collector to explain this but from my interpretation it's more like uh not entry level I think it's got quite a history but these days it's let's go with entry level and let the uh the listeners correct me on that but I know there's some good autos so I think you can get you know like JS there's some decent JSN autos and whatnot um so I think Leaf has its place but I think I think there's a history with Leaf um but yeah certainly heard of them yeah nice so yeah these packet cards are pretty cool like I'll show you this card after I I mean there's a there's a Cody Catapory base card.
SPEAKER_01:Oh nice um yeah they're pretty smart they're pretty smart never heard of it before but thought I'd jump on it so I've got a I've got a base card of uh a a legend of the game um another goalkeeper funnily enough um yeah none other than Edwin van de Sar. Oh nice uh and good news is he's in his Holland kit there because uh we don't want any manu cards making their way into all about all about the bees no we don't but I bring on to just I'm just gonna show you this card because I think it's it's really it's really cool actually so it's another Van der Sar card but it's like a like a I don't know like church stained glass oh yeah that's nice yeah well that's pretty cool and that's part of the what I got as well so one I can't remember the product but there's uh a super short print uh insert called stain glass um that looks quite similar to that yeah I've seen it that look really cool mosaic I think it is could be wrong so yeah that is um that's why I put that in there because it's some new it's a new product um or new product to to me and and and to you so that's going in yeah randastar um so you're you're popping in random star I like that yeah who have you got first chief yeah so so I wanted to pick one from this this this latest delivery from Card Crazy um I'm I'm picking I'm picking this card because it's a it's a Phoenix base card from Phoenix football.
SPEAKER_00:I I really like Phoenix um and like a lot of uh you know I've gone about origins I think probably every every single episode but those even those base cards to me look like decent inserts but I think to a certain extent these um especially from this international mega the base cards have got like uh how would I describe that they're like speckles of colour in them and I actually think they are very very nice looking cards and I've actually got a couple of Seahawks ones AJ Barner in my I've got an AJ Barner base actually in my PC um part of that sort of mini rainbow thing that I've been collecting but this player I've gone for because he's having a belter of a season and as a man he's got it all he is the complete package he's he's a quarterback um I'm not that way inclined but he's a good looking boy uh he's got a gorgeous missus he's got a lot of money he's got everything he's winning games it's none other than Josh Allen um very nice what a card play yeah so obviously it's a base card um what a player what a season so that's the main reason because when we when uh we reflect I think come the end of the season that man's name will be on everyone's lips I think yeah I think after Sam Darnold and JSN we will see we will see I mean you know who knows uh let's let's hope that that none of those Seahawk big players JSN especially don't pick up an injury because that could uh could derail to slip the sea that's all I'm saying oh speaking speaking of injuries did you see um uh Jaden Daniels against the Seahawks uh what while he's still on the pitch Seahawks battered and the game was done fourth quarter he gets tackled um I don't know if you've seen it but his arm his left arm gets stuck underneath his body and it turns completely the opposite way so he's basically his arm's goosed but he's you but you see at the joint it literally goes the opposite way so that's his season done um why he's on the pitch is mind boggling um not having the best of seasons to commanders but he's their obviously he's their biggest asset and uh that's him done now so um commanders are done I would say but yeah that was a that was a gruesome one that yeah no um so MC over the last two weeks what've you what have you got in the post?
SPEAKER_01:I think it's been busy for you isn't it uh yeah where do I start I'll start with this one this is uh feels like it's um I feel like I feel like opening this this is the second time I've opened a parcel that looks like this so it's the Project 22 comes in a really nice nice box and the the clip did you draw that directly from tops like bought off eBay off uh off um from an eBay store um oh yeah I've got another one so I've got basically this over the last two weeks I've got two more of the Project 22 Gerard cards I've already got one I got one a while back um yeah one of the first Gerard cards I've got actually and I've had these two on my they've been sort of hanging around for a while and took the plunge and here's one so they come in these really good like thick um slabs as well by top so these would be really good um I guess for me to get like graded because uh like they've probably never been been out of this you know yeah um so this should be near enough mint really and then the other one is is this one which look quite like an acime little anime oh that's nice yeah um so yeah so like the arts on the bats of John Glaudu did that one after the other one so yeah that's super cool and they come like you know they kind of slabs though they feel they feel great but I did have essentially what happened BC as you're as you're well aware um I had a sort of not a Gerard epiphany but I just went Gerard crazy if you will um and I've got six or well two two of them and I've got in my hand another six so no you've we've posted a couple there's the uh the England aficionado aficionado the Panini Gerard one posted up on Instagram Instagram at the minute I think yeah along with that tops um sort of anime one as well yeah beautiful card yeah um and then I've got these ones as well that I got um my first Gerard Futera card actually it's um in his England kit yeah that's unlicensed that one isn't it yeah so the first Futera unlicensed one to be added to the the collection um this tops deco which I quite like the um the sort of like great gatsby like um I've got there it's really nice so that's from the um the long range stunner against Olympiarcos the classic Andy Grey which obviously I spoke about last week um your beauty and then I got these two which was a numbered LA Galaxy to 99 82 to 99 nice um and an update on my I'm currently bidding on an LA Galaxy Gerrard numbered to seven card now that would be that would jump up to the top of my Gerard collection because that'd be the lowest number card I've got um that that um auction ends tomorrow so who knows this time it's are you are you in it to win it or you dabble in oh I'm oh I'm in it I've I've I've bid I've bid there's no other bids on it um uh okay so we'll see there might be in a minute that's not given um uh I I also got I've got this this is also my first um my first Gerard Donras um card I haven't shown you yet usually I send you pictures don't I have as soon as I've got them but this is uh crunch time so that's love that I've seen a lot of them in the the basketball ones they they they are really nice cards they are yeah that's super cool for that yeah so I've got I've got a bunch of Jarrah cards I've got you know a couple of the care packages from the brakes and I I've fallen bringing my fallen down a hole again you know I it's happened again match attacks I'm on my third tank I'm back I'm on my third 10 um the cars look good I've hit another Wesley Snyder metallic I posted that this morning just before the the show on Insta the Champions League Metal one yeah lovely yeah so they are very cool cards yeah I've also got also pulled this um I don't know if you remember them from last season the whole thing was that Bale got Gareth Bale one yeah that's pretty cool then they've got these um Starboy cards which look pretty cool there's Morgan Rogers yeah that looks that I like the whiteboard around that actually Hoyson for Madrid ex Bournemouth that are pretty cool some of the standout cards I've got I've got the like the black edge editions they're quite they're fairly rare they look they look better this year they look good yeah Verez um and I've got Jesus of the 100 club I've got a three call I think you were a fan of this player I definitely was the graduates Philip Larm oh yeah yeah which is quite a nice card as well so some some nice hits but I bought three tins and that's quite you get quite a lot of cards in in each pack. What are you doing with the cards? Currently that's sitting in a I've I've I've ordered them well okay I'll tell you what I'm doing I've we'll put them in order friend of the friend of the modlock's kindly um donating me uh a match attacks binder for this year because he's bought it and he doesn't want it anymore so yeah there'll be another binder added to it to the collection and I'll obviously sort through them I love sorting through cards and putting them in binders I really enjoy it yeah and so I'll be doing that essentially with with the cards I've got but it's a slippery slope I feel it's a slippery slope.
SPEAKER_00:I think I think you what what I think we were talking before um was I think it's Dom Dom's on next week isn't he's a week after yeah I mean we'll have to say change but yeah yeah we need we need we need to open that boy up I mean not in not in a well not in that type of way uh but he's he strikes me as a bit confused um where he's going the direction and whatnot um but I think you you know like with myself and stuff like that and spoke about in other pods is that you I've now settled like what's interesting is I I went I was you know dabbling with other teams and that and then it was like oh I'm just gonna stick to Seahawks but now it's more certain players so obviously JSN I've kind of got back to my roots um I'm looking to add to that all the time Milro AJ Barner they're really the guys I'm looking at at the minute um I want to just keep adding to those uh for my PC so I've really narrowed it down and like with yourself with the Gerard thing and obviously getting back into I I'm convinced that when you get your care package from me when we come over that your love for Green Bay is gonna is going to get you into the the NFL cards. That's what I love to hear oh coom I've been in a an NFL break that would be something I'd love to hear but um but yeah like with your Gerard you've got a bit of direction and I think you know what I'm gonna tell you this live on the podcast because I've not said it yet I I can't see myself buying any more tops Premier League or match attacks mainly because like I kinda like them and I feel the binder that I'm gonna bring over for my my nephew but um unless you actually I'll correct that I'm keen to get a hobby box so maybe that's something we should look at me you dom the really impressed with the mem cards um as far as I'm aware they're all player worn and I think that's awesome there's not enough of that for me at the I guess the the middle level in NFL um I think all the cards I've got I think I've only got one player worn I know I've got two two player worn relics mems um but I love that so I love the hobby box for the but when you go in and I buy the tins and that I'm always disappointed you buy it and you're full of hope like you think oh this is the one I'm gonna get a belter and I come back and it's just the same cards. Burnley some reason when I see a Burnley card I mean it's it's I've got nothing against Burnley but it just I see a Burnley card I might waste my money um so yeah I think and and you know with Dom's messages and that I think you need I reckon people would agree I think you need a direction you need to know what you want to collect. I think it's awesome that you've got your Gerard PC now um and stuff like that but I think that's what Dom Dom mentioned didn't he about getting West Ham numbered cards so that's quite good. I think sometimes you've got to go through I've it's interesting because you know like I started really properly collecting in January so I missed a lot of the stuff that's coming out now. So as these new products are coming out now it's I feel like I've been doing it for ages but it's the first time I've been in the breaks as they've come out. So you start to work out what's been a good product for your team so like Origins has been good for Seahawks. Luminance was not good for for for Seahawks not not a luminance card actually. So the uh I'm not massive into these type of cards I quite like they're you know they like more of a you know good photography type card aren't they good pictures you know are more you know this sort of thing or um yeah so there's certain products I'll miss I think certified's coming out this week I'm not a massive fan of that mosaic I love it um absolute football at the minute is uh and that's going to be a topic we'll we'll end this show with talking about the kaboom um but yeah like generally not a fan of that product so I think once you've you've tried a few products match attacks as well the tops Premier League and you work out what's good for what you're collecting and whether you like the cards but look base cards for tops Premier League are quite nice but I just don't think you get enough in that retail stuff and over here you can't get the hobby boxes um yeah I I I agree I think I've I I can't remember the last tops pack I bought it's been a long time um because I just got bored of it you know like you built the build up of of sort of throwaway cards or or you know not hitting the kills you in it oh it most certainly is chief um so that's sort of switched the match of tacks a little bit but I'll tell you what I was doing today yesterday I've been seeing like a lot of videos of people talking about like um what's been the best um boxes released over the years like football wise keep seeing these videos on TikTok um of like yeah Panini you know 2023 um uh just loads of different eras like Prism Qatar World Cup and all these little boxes so I was looking to see if I could get hold of any of these boxes because what I'm searching for I think there's there's uh a need for me is I still haven't pulled an auto oh right yeah I still haven't pulled well no I have one um which is Jaden Dance um from an LFC box um that was that was a while ago now I feel like I I'm ready to pull like something big if that makes sense yeah yeah I've looked at some of these boxes and you can still get some of them sealed um you know ranging between I don't know like 50 to 80 quid that box so bit bit pricey but might be worth it but yeah the hobby boxes are something that interests me for sure um yeah because that's that feels like the the top hobby boxes people there was a lot of hits coming out of them um a decent amount should I say um to sort of fulfill the the price tag I guess yeah well we could when I come back we could do perhaps we'll we'll we'll think carefully look at the prices we could either do a an NFL box where you've got a guaranteed auto the the football box you've got an auto but yeah like we can we can definitely get a get a decent box and do a do a draft the only thing obviously with the the football is we both want Liverpool cards that's that's the thing with foot with football is I've got zero interest in any of the other teams but we'll sort something out. Yeah um mail day for me then so obviously I've been talking about the one this morning the highlight for me is so impeccable uh impeccable football's been out recently I had Seahawks and Jets and I got uh I got one tonight actually with KCC um it's taken a while to fill but I think he's announced that's going tonight so I've got Seahawks in that but I got a Jets uh Mason Taylor numbered to six says it's 73 of 75 um I'll be bringing this to the UK uh seeing if Jake's got any interest in it being a Jets it's probably a decent one to keep with him being a rookie so yes I got that I got a never heard of this guy I was about to look him up Jaden Hicks from the Chiefs rookie auto another one I'm on a roll here I've got from the Dolphins Gordon the second olli gordon the second rookie auto from Luminance not a very nice as you know I'm into my penmanship that got a lot of time for that it's a nice auto that looks like my little girl could actually my little girl could have done a better job than that that is disappointing so uh Quinn Ewers got a couple of numbered Phoenix cards there and then I Mitchell for the Colts and then I'm not sure where I if I've shown these before but I got I've definitely not shown this one so I received this this week this is a mosaic card that's not out over here yet I bought from the States that's a Jalen Milrow but I really liked it. It wasn't expensive but I thought yeah really like that card and I'm not sure correct me if I'm wrong but I there's a guy over here was I telling you the story about the the guy who messaged me about the Seahawks cards that he he said he'd been yeah did I show the the hollow the clearly hollow no can you see the yes this is got like an acetate card so it's like transparent if you can see the I don't know if you can see it on the camera but you can just see it's very similar to the base the difference is is that the clearly is gold and then as you turn it you can see all the little rated rookies all over it. So I think it's called a hollow super short print. Oh there you go you can see them there. Yeah so yeah got that this week um yeah chuffed to bits with that um I think we would oh there you go look there's the base of it so you'll see to the untrained eye it looks more or less the same but you can see that you've got a gold sign and when you turn this one you can see all the rated rookies in the in the hollow yeah um so it's one for the PC and then I've got a we were talking about this before we went live but AJ Bar actually I thought it was the 999 but it's actually 399 but that was the card I was telling you about that I thought was numbered to 999. Oh okay yeah but just just one for my AJ Barner um collection then I got a few others got a nice from the same guy Kenneth Walker numbered to 99 quite nice is it a rookie not a rookie that one but yeah nice card so yeah it's been fairly quiet. I've got a few bits turning up over the next few weeks off eBay um I think KCC might be holding a Milro rookie card number to 99 so perhaps get that in the near future and then impeccable goes tonight so fingers crossed but that I think before the UK trip that will be that'll be the last I don't think I'm gonna go in anymore because obviously I want to be able to do get a few bits while we're over there do a box and whatnot so I'm gonna um take my foot off the gas a little bit yeah make sure you put the right petrol in um yeah oh no need for that was it oh sorry yeah um my um my well my experience of kaboom is sort of like a whatnot advert of a guy pulling a gold mbape kaboon which he obviously told me it was to ten I think I think he sold it for like what is valued at like six and a half grand or something like that something ridiculous.
SPEAKER_01:I think I've seen a messy kaboom and I came across on eBay a a Gerard kaboon which is a silver kaboom which you told me is is a base right? Yes and it was raided and it was on eBay for about 230 250 250 quid um expensive but the the cards are they are cool and they kaboom cards are really cool.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah maybe a bit out of price range should we say yeah it's it it's it it it it is expensive and and like you said there like with when you get into your players that are I suppose the good thing with Gerald yeah he's a legend and stuff like that but he's not topical is it he's not in the limelight at the minute so you might get some decent prices but yeah like the kabooms for like you said Messi and Mbappe and and all that the prices are and even JSN you over here I'd be I think you you're looking at at least a thousand US dollars minimum and like you you're you've got your greens which are your one on ones um your gold's your number to ten and then your for want of a better word your silvers are your base Which we know is not base, but yeah. Um and yeah, like when you even with JSN you get into the golds and the green 101, it's serious money. Um but yeah, like this year, like obviously I wouldn't I wouldn't say no to a kaboon, but just I'd be looking to trade for his previous one because it just looks better.
unknown:Okay.
SPEAKER_00:Um they've been going for a while, and another example is uh Russell Wilson. So a while ago on one of the papers over here, someone was selling one, but I think it was like 2018, and they weren't quite there for me, so it had kaboom, it was a lot smaller, and it had like a black border around it, it just didn't quite look as good as some of the newer ones. Um but the the ones that are out this year just don't do it for me at all.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, generated cards don't really tickle my fancy either by the sounds of things, so yeah, I don't know how long we see if they will be, but no, the old Kaboom is.
SPEAKER_00:I think people still I think they'll still want them. Well we were talking uh uh Mark, weren't we, about the so the first off the line this year. Um they've introduced a purple kaboom. Uh I don't know how I feel about it. Again, if I got it, certainly won't be complaining. I'll be uh I'll be buzzing, and in fact, but I just don't know if it if it you know because of the last year of the license, but they're I believe they're only in the first off-the-line boxes, but does it dilute the because they're talking this year, like with the downtowns and that, are they are they really a super short print? Because there seems to be a lot of them, but is it does does adding a purple kaboom dilute the the the what's the word the prestige of having such a card?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, I mean I guess the the more the more colours you bring out, right? It's gonna be like you said it's gonna dilute the the pres yeah, how well they're received, right? Like a gold uh you know than if I agree with um bring more colours out of the same collection to sort of I don't know, and that's not for me. Keep the gold, keep the silver. I sort of use like a couple of colours, but yeah.
SPEAKER_00:I think I think for us though, I've just thought about this now to be fair. Like if you were you know really at the high end where you've you've you've invested a lot of money in your kabooms, and that's one of your things, you'd probably be a bit more against it, wouldn't you? Whereas like me and you, we don't have a kaboom, and like I said, if I pulled a uh a purple kaboom, I'd be absolutely buzzing. You wouldn't you wouldn't hear the last of it, yes. Um so I guess from that point of view, it gives the lower or you know mid to low end collectors an opportunity to perhaps to get one. So yeah, like I absolutely wouldn't be complaining about it. And you know, I'm sitting here moaning about the design this year of the JSM one. If I got one, I'd be buzzing my tits off. Um but yeah, I think for the higher end people who you kind of just focus on that, it's probably diluting it a little bit, isn't it? So uh an interesting one, but yeah, I'm just not a massive fan of the design, to be honest.
SPEAKER_01:Fair play, mate. Fair play.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. Um have we got any have we missed any segments? I think we are sadly coming to the end of the show, aren't we? Um it's been a bit catching. It's been nice though, like yeah, not not not having done one for two weeks. It's uh like we're saying before, it's like become quite a regular, you know, quite a nice thing actually to uh sit down, chat a bit about football, chat about cards, show off what we've been getting, have a little chat. Um, so yeah, much needed. Enjoyed it. Have a good old yarn, and uh of course a yarn, yeah, that's it. A good old yarn. Um, and uh just to uh just to reiterate, we are so our new release dates now will be Fridays, um not a Monday morning. That just gives us a bit more flexibility uh to meet with guests and get the show recorded, which is quite good. Um, so yeah, look out for the pod Fridays. Uh if you want to, we've got a pretty full schedule, haven't we? So we've got Dom lined up, we've got uh what was the name of the breakup? Seaside Breaks. Oh, Andy from Seaside Sports. Seaside Sports, yeah. Andy's coming on, and then hopefully we're gonna do some sort of live or show from the Fiddler's Elbow uh when I'm back in the UK. Uh, we'll try and get some content, maybe even a pod from Fanatics in London would be quite good. I would have thought so, Chief.
SPEAKER_02:And we've got the Guildford card show as well.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, Guildford card show as well. I'm looking forward to that. Um not sure if we're we're big enough for this yet, but uh if you see us there, come and say hello. Um yeah, it'd be nice to um meet some new people and uh chat all things cards. Um but yeah, I think that draws us to a close.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, busy schedule coming up, Chief. But uh great to have a big catch-up with you and um only one thing left to do, isn't there? Regards to the family.
SPEAKER_02:There is regards to the family. Over and out. See you on the next one.
