Coom & Currie Sports cards
Remember that rush of excitement when you found a special card in a pack as a kid? That nostalgic thrill has evolved into something much more powerful for today's collectors.
What begins as an innocuous purchase—a Tyler Lockett card from Pike Market in Seattle—quickly transforms into a full-fledged obsession that consumes both time and finances. Our hosts share their remarkably similar journeys into the trading card world, despite focusing on different sports: one drawn to NFL cards, the other to football/soccer.
We candidly explore the psychological elements that make card collecting so addictive. From the adrenaline rush of opening packs to the thrill of scoring a rare find online, both hosts acknowledge their struggles with "throttling back" their spending while maintaining their passion for the hobby.

Coom & Currie Sports cards
With one Vendor on the missing list, how's your luck Dom Lott takes over..
A missing co-host, a guest in the hot seat, and a kitchen studio set the tone for a candid ride through football form and the modern sports card grind. We kick off with West Ham’s burst of goals, Liverpool’s off-day after Europe, and that familiar knot in the stomach when VAR makes the game harder to love. It’s the same knot a lot of collectors feel during breaks: the thrill of possibility fighting the fear you’re playing the wrong odds.
From there we get practical. Dom walks us through tightening a PC, shifting from scattergun buys to targeted West Ham hits, and why reading product checklists matters more than hype. We break down the difference between random team and pick-your-team, when player breaks make sense, and why sticker autos, on-card signatures, and “not associated with any event” patches aren’t equal. The smartest move isn’t always the most exciting: sometimes you buy singles, other times you leverage a cheap team slot with frequent hits. The trick is to know which is which.
Then we tackle the big question: do manufacturers steer monster hits towards influencers? We can’t prove it, but the economics of case hits and sustained demand suggest there’s more orchestration than pure chance. Our advice is grounded: control what you can. Balance the rush with a plan, learn your products, and keep a binder for base cards that might age surprisingly well—especially with first-year Topps NFL on the horizon, where rookie base could mirror early Prism’s long-tail value.
We round it out with mail day highlights, a sharp Steven Gerrard Chrome Flashbacks low-numbered gem, and a live break that reminds us why we love and loathe the chase in equal measure. Plus, Brighton card show prep: how to walk a hall without buying the wrong card first. Subscribe, share with a mate who loves breaks, and tell us: are loaded boxes for influencers a clever myth or a quiet truth? Your stories and reviews help more collectors find us.
Welcome to Coom and Curry Sports Cards Podcast. We're collecting meat again. Welcome back, Podcast Vendors, or should I say Podcast Vendor, episode 21 of uh Coom and Curry Sports Trading Cards. Breaking news. We have first off, we have special guest, friend of the pod, Dom Lot on. Welcome to Luck. How's your luck, Dom Lot? And we've had what can only be described as a no-show from Coom. Now, talking in the green room, me and Don uh we've been talking conspiracy conspiracy theories. Um, and after last week's discussion on brought up by Coom himself of talking about uh whether or not one of us died, who would be replaced. Um, I think he's asked answered his own question tonight. Um so only one thing to do, and that's welcome to uh Lot and Curry's Trading Cards Podcast show, Don. Welcome.
SPEAKER_04:Good evening, welcome to the UK only.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, we've uh alienated our news enam friends due to due to Coom's uh absence. Um, but the show must go on. So um who knows, you might gate crash this episode. Um second bit of of super important information is that I'm not coming live from the shed, you might notice. Uh I'm coming live from the kitchen. Um again, theories you know floating around that um my wife has sabotaged the shed key set, and uh the key was nowhere to be found, um, hence why I am sat in the kitchen. Um, but here we are, we move on. Let's get into it. Right, first and foremost, let's uh let's welcome Dom. Dom, how's it going?
SPEAKER_04:Not bad. I should say guys, but guy, singular, not bad. Looking forward to catching up with BC and disgraceful. Absolute disgraceful.
SPEAKER_01:He's gangrous. Absolutely garrus. He's absolutely bailed on us, yeah. Um yeah, so I can only apologize on behalf of King for the for the listeners at home.
SPEAKER_02:Me and Don had a very uh very nice interaction or meet up on Saturday, was it? Friday, I believe. Friday, sorry. Yeah, Friday evening. We had a uh pretty much an old school meet and meet and greet or a meet and swap, if you will. Um we sat outside a pub and we we swapped we swap tops cards and we put the worlds to rights regarding football and life and stuff, and um we uh yeah, we filled up uh a lot more of the binders, um the tops binders, haven't we? Uh I've also become an owner of a mattritex binder. Just to add to my binder collection.
SPEAKER_04:Started to a library. Yeah, I've got about five five binders now. Um quite unusual sitting outside a pub swapping cards in your well, me at my 40s because uh you just notice it not notice a lot of curious eyes walking by and it's almost all judgment.
SPEAKER_01:This guy's alright.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, it was quite a um an interesting um I feel exactly the same. It's Friday evening, um a lot of people were out on the town, and uh there we were absolutely cracking out tins of cards.
SPEAKER_04:Not talking to each other, just ploughing through them, looking for things.
SPEAKER_02:Just seeing which ones we needed. Uh yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
SPEAKER_01:Um made it all worthwhile.
SPEAKER_02:We certainly did. Um alright, so the first thing on the agenda I've got is football chat. Um, and you'll be glad to hear because Green's not here. We probably won't discuss NFL too much because I know you're not not too keen on the sport.
SPEAKER_04:Um about it, so it would be a long period of silence from me.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, well, I mean, let's discuss, you know, obviously me being a Liverpool fan, you being a a West Ham fan. Uh great result for you guys on Saturday, was it? No, Sun Sunday, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_04:Sunday, yeah. Six goals scored in in two games, which is unheard of since since uh well as long as I can remember now, since we were playing AZ Alkmar in Europe is when we last scored six goals in two games, probably. But uh yeah, things have we don't look good, but I'll take luck for now.
SPEAKER_02:100%. I mean 3-1, um loads of different goal scorers have been recently as well. So what's um what's changed for West Ham? What do you think has been the the forefront?
SPEAKER_04:I think poor opposition. I think there's uh a sense that Nuno has actually played started the game with a striker for the last two games, which does help because otherwise we're looking at the formation rotating it like a Rubik's cube, trying to work out what the hell he's thinking, where everyone's going. So I think Wilson started against Newg Newcastle, lasted half a game, and then he started again against Burnley. Fulcrog looks like his days are numbered with the club. I think he are for Germany's after him now, but um having a striker, uh Wampersaka's been great coming back into the team for Walker Peters, and then Walker Peters came in and nicked a goal off Boeing. But yeah, things look better. But Newcastle two years ago did not perform after Champions League games when they played midweek, and they did not perform against us, and Burnley, I guess uh Burnley. So what can we say? Having lost to Leeds and Sunderland already, at least we've beaten one of the promoted teams.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, we um uh I think we're alienating Burnley fans on this pod. Well, mainly Coomies anyway, um, saying how much he dislikes pulling Burnley cards from top spacks.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Um but yeah, from yeah, I mean, it's good to get two bats back wins, right? Score six goals.
SPEAKER_04:I'm real. We're two points off Newcastle.
SPEAKER_02:There we go.
SPEAKER_04:Two points off Newcastle. Last season I could not get over everybody going on about Bournemouth and Forest all season, and they still finished below Palace. Like, nobody mentioned Palace to alienate the Brighton fans, because I do live in East Croydon and um I prefer Palace to Brighton, so there you go. Thank you guys for numbers. Yes.
SPEAKER_02:Um I mean I will I'll jump onto Liverpool quickly, should I? But yeah, not much to not much to discuss, really. We know two back to that wins after playing so well against um Madrid in midweek. So then Dunang looked fatigued, didn't look up for it, and City did, and they overrun us, outplayed us. We thoroughly probably deserved a 3-0 defeat. Although I will be that fan that says that Van Dyke goal's got to stand. There's nothing wrong with that goal.
SPEAKER_04:I don't get it. I do not get it. I mean I was I used to play uh snooker games on my phone where he'd line up a shot and it would show you how the ball's gonna bounce off the cushion. And if if he'd hit the ball straight at a goalkeeper's head from that angle, it would have been lucky to have hit Robertson on its way past at a 90-degree angle. I mean, it was he wasn't in his line of sight, he was the exact opposite. So it was 100% a goal. Um and obviously after Mamadas really saved the penalty, it would have built some momentum, but instead, no, yeah. I mean it's prolific again.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I mean, I mean, yeah, they look they looked class, and I don't want to take anything away from you know, even if we did get that goal back, we probably would still would have gone on and lost that game the way we were playing, but never know how much of a how much a goal can change a match, right? And um and slot came out someone came out after the game. Yeah, exactly, exactly. Yeah, the crowd would have got right behind the team, it was just before half time as well, wasn't it? It's not not too far away from half time. Um and then obviously City went unscored before half time, so it was a proper sucker punch. But um Slot came out after the game and said someone came up to him after the game and said this ref gave a goal last season in a city match, which was City Wolves. City Wolves, yeah. Then if you saw the clip of it, but it was Bernardo Silva who was right on top of um Jose Sarrin goal. Literally, literally like backing into him. They've scored he's offside and he's given a goal. So I don't know, I don't like to moan about refs that much, but because you can't change the decisions. But I mean I just thought that was sort of for him to go and look at look at VARs, actually go over there and go, still he's still blocking his vision.
SPEAKER_04:It's just nonsense, it makes the game so hard to watch. I can see why like Coom obviously living away from the culture of it, but it's hard. Like it's hard to watch the game and enjoy it with all these things going on, and it's I don't know the the Liverpool thing's difficult because obviously you've lost key players, but you you've got the core of players. I mean, with the if at when Alison's back, you do have a core of players that's still there, and Ekati K is great, but I've listened to all of the football podcasts, I mean, with players from like the heyday, and it's like they've all just decided now that it's because of Jota, and you know, yeah, I think people have kind of assumed that since day one, but it's it's interesting, it's taking you 11 games to work it out and actually make a point of it, but it's gonna be having a huge effect. I'm not sure I agree with keeping keeping his shirt up in the dressing room, I just don't think it makes any sense to keep wallowing in it. Like you need to, in a professional environment, try and move on when you're at work, sort of thing.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, it's a constant reminder, isn't it, of the grief, I guess. You don't want to you're never gonna forget that person or that player, but yeah, you've got a point there. It could yeah, could be causing a lot more more prolonged grief, you know what I mean? Like it's gonna affect them a lot longer than other.
SPEAKER_04:Keep talking about it. Keep it in mind. Sometimes you've got to just change the subject. It's awful. I mean, it's gonna my point is it's gonna be affecting them humanly, they're doing the right thing, but in terms of being a decent team, they're doing the wrong thing, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, so time will tell in the next match. Um not sure if you can't. No, I can't think off the top of my head. Um, do you know who you've got next?
SPEAKER_04:Pretty bad. I'm pretty sure it's somebody we don't want to be playing. Um it was either like Man City or somebody that's back in momentum, maybe Villa, but no good. Bonjour. We've got um Martin has left. Um back.
SPEAKER_02:I just checked I just checked the finishes.
SPEAKER_04:Trying to fill the time.
SPEAKER_01:There he is. I'm silent. Oh, we've gone. Silent. We back? We're back. Yeah, cool.
SPEAKER_02:Um I just left the the studio, if you will, and checked that we've got Nottingham Forest next Saturday at home. So you'd hope that would be three points, but you never know, because they've just they've just come off a good result, haven't they? Um I think they won 3-0. I know, I saw something the other day that was. Well, what's interesting is what you've done this very league season in the world. Um in terms of like the title race or the top half, or even the bottom half, it is if you lose or you draw, you're dropping places quite significantly. Like if you if you don't keep that momentum up, you will people are chasing each team and it's quite tight. So um, yeah, it's um it's an exciting season, but again, marred by shocking refereeing decisions, but we won't get into that. I'm not gonna moan about VRS, but um, I'll probably mention it again in 10 minutes or something. But um I played uh Private Side on Monday night for fiddlers, just to give people an update. We are in a relegation dog fight. Um we're currently looking up, we're gonna get relegated, but it's our first time in first time in Division One, so the quality is is decent. Yeah, sort of like a good experience, good to see where we're at, but there is a lot of good quality in the league. So yeah, we lost we lost six three against top of the league, and we're second to bottom. The admin then put it up as four three loss, so goal difference didn't get too much of a battering. There was two sim two two sim bins during the game. Um yeah, it's definitely not boring, that's for sure. Um but yeah, there we go. Um Loz no uh player for the other team absolutely cleaned me out. You got simbined. You get you get booked and you get sinbinned for two minutes. So the guy was off for about 45 seconds, I reckon. And then they called him back on. So absolute, you know, another another refereeing mishap. But there you go. Um, all right, mate. Let me jump out and jump back in. Keep talking amongst yourself.
SPEAKER_04:We are lagging and stuttering here, mate. Oh well. Well, interesting point I'll make while he's not listening is that um I played in the first couple of seasons for fiddlers. I mean the seasons run for about six, seven weeks, I believe, but it might be time to get a goalkeeper.
SPEAKER_02:Yes, that would be ideal.
SPEAKER_04:So I've just I've just pointed out you must be nine seasons in now without ones. Maybe, maybe it's time to get a goalkeeper.
SPEAKER_02:If you are listening and you live in the Brighton area and you are a goalkeeper, or if you know a goalkeeper, point them in our direction because I'm not a goalkeeper. I went and goal for about ten minutes, conceded two goals, so you know. I mean I need to be I need to be on the pitch, I need to be outfield, I need to be affecting the game. Get amongst it. That's it, exactly that. Um, but we'll keep you updated on the relegation dog battle.
SPEAKER_04:Um back-to-back promotions will do that to you.
SPEAKER_02:Yes, uh it's a real humbling experience. Losing every week is quite humbling. We've we've won one game and we drew one game. Funnily enough, they won the game when I wasn't playing. I don't know if that's got any correlation.
SPEAKER_04:That's great, obviously.
SPEAKER_02:We'll skip that.
SPEAKER_04:Um edit that out.
SPEAKER_02:Right. So, first of all, I jumped out of the studio and I actually have got an update on Coomb's uh presence. He's messaged me saying half an hour, and that was at five past nine. So you do the math. He'll be on a T minus 18 minutes if he's on time, but who knows? Who knows? Um, I mean, yeah, without him, let's get let's get into how's your luck, Dom Lot. Um uh a segment on the show, which has been a regular segment that's been uh brought up. Um but we've got we've got a major catch-up to have with you, Dom, haven't we? There's been a lot of uh how can I put this developments. Developments is exactly what I took forward. A lot of developments in the card collecting world for yourself, but not just for yourself.
SPEAKER_04:In the household.
SPEAKER_02:In the household. So uh talk us through since the last time you're on the pod, talk us through what's happened since in the in the household and in your card collecting.
SPEAKER_04:Well, I have to say, I'd like I'll have this conversation with Coon when he comes in in 18 minutes. Um quite offensive saying that I need to hone in on what I'm doing, because I think I'm quite concise with my collection, to be honest, but I will bring that up when he comes in. Uh but in the in the world I live in, it's my wife is likes likes likes being on a phone, likes, likes to gamble, likes to shop. It's mostly been labooo boos for the last year. So it's been purchasing laboo boos when no one else is getting them. She's getting 18 of them a week, and they are I mean, there's a pile down there, there's a few attached to the baby's buggy. There's a the that we haven't got a mobile, we've got fucking laboo boos spinning around above everything. Um so I I did my first break before I think it's after I spoke to you guys actually, so yeah, it must be because it was after Cardsley was on, so I did a Cardsley break. Turns out if you support West Ham, you you need to go into a pick your own team because I was paying 24 quid and I got Bournemouth, and in my first break, I didn't realise how long it would take. I was like, I'll just pay for it. I'll log on at nine, and it'll start at nine, and I was I was getting on a plane at four o'clock in the morning, so I was in no no way gonna sit up and watch it. So I pulled uh from the break, I got the the only auto of the box, which was an Anton Semeno auto. Thought this is easy, I like this. Then I did a few more. I've got Norway in a in a prison break. I got I mean I've just been all over the place, and then I've well I did a topps break with Chap Brothers, who it's about six quid to buy into West M. And I went through a tunnel trying to buy in, didn't get in, and then come out the tunnel to watch and pull a 105 Bowen auto, black and white. So I screenshot it as it came out, and I look at it about once a week, and it breaks my heart. Then I went and did a few more and a few more, and then one day I was sat on the floor playing with a baby and was opening a package for a break that I'd not watched, and I got my first West Ham auto, uh, which is a Reese Orford rookie card auto. Like you've discussed in a pod rookie card means nothing, it means it'll just never play. Like I'll never see him on a pitch. Max Dalman doesn't even feature, so I don't think Reese Orford's gonna be a big deal. Uh but Laura Laura sort of took one look at it and was like, Oh, where did where'd you get that from? And I was like, Laura's my wife, obviously. And uh I mentioned it. I was like, Oh, Chat Brothers is a break, you know, you pick a team, it comes up, and didn't there was no more mention of it. And then I came home from work late one night, and as I went to like pick up the stuff that Otis had been sat on on the floor, there was a clunk and out falls three blabbed like numbered cards that and I was like, what are these? Then I realised they're numbered, and then Laura was like, Well they weren't West Am so I just let Otis play with them.
SPEAKER_01:I was like, no.
SPEAKER_04:Anyway, this long story's not been cut short, but basically, yeah, Laura's they then got into breaking and she's doing like a couple a day, I think, but to my knowledge, I mean it's become a bit of the dark secret of that. But we get we get these cards come through, and I've I've got my one auto, and I'm quite happy about that, and then uh I've gone to the pub to watch West Ham Brentford with our mate Anthony, who dropped by, and uh I just get a mess my message came up on my home screen, it's like I'm in a break, it's West Am and it said something like I've got uh a wanna boo-boo, a picture card, everybody seems really excited, and I was like, Well, I don't know what she means, and it she basically got a number, it's like a numbered patch with the the B from Betway in the patch. I mean it's one of 25 uh numbered of 25 absolute gold. And then three Mondays in a row, henna's who hopefully will get onto the show for you, is another Chelsea fan breaker. But three weeks in a row, we've had three patches, three autos, and Laura's doing all sorts of weird breaks. She's doing breaks where you you buy packet after packet a card, and whoever gets the lowest number card gets to pick one, and she's trying to win me a bowing auto, so we've just got these cards coming through the door, but it's coming from everywhere. We will get down to it later, McCoom, but I am very uh honed in on what I'm actually collecting. Yeah, the household's gone wilder. Sometimes I go going into buy into a West Ham break and I can't get it, and I get home and I realise it's because Laura's got it while I've been on the train. Win-win for me.
SPEAKER_02:Sounds like the mail mail days are coming thick and fast then.
SPEAKER_04:It's just hard to know, yeah. It's always like, is this yours or mine? Uh and then I just get them all anyway.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. So what um is Laura Laura collecting West Ham classes as well, or is she collecting like is she jumping in brakes for you?
SPEAKER_04:I think see, my my attitude to the brakes is that they're just fun. So I I've done some where it's just a few quids and it just entertains me on the train home for 20 minutes. Like I don't I don't necessarily need to keep the cards. Laura wants to get a valuable card. So she wants to get a card and it'd be worse than they can sell it, and then it will be like that. Will be the whole point for her. I may or may not have told her is that you would not get a West West Ham card that's valuable. So you need to be in a different team to get something, and I feel like I have mentioned it, I've done the right thing, but I don't want a load of I'm not interested in an Esteval card to be honest, or a in Guemo. Like I just want West Ham cards. That's it. So she's playing a game, she's unfortunately playing a game she can't win, but she's upstairs and we won't tell her that. Yes.
SPEAKER_02:What were the um what were the what were the three slap cards that she gave to Otis then?
SPEAKER_04:Well they were all though they were the Chelsea ones, because so Laura's Laura's old man was a Chelsea fan, so they are as a Rebia, I don't know how to pronounce that, which is 171 to 175, Hakim Ziek 101 or 150, and then a Niccolò Savona Juventus rookie card, which is 27 or 125. Um, but that was to try and win a Boeing card, so she was buying the Chelsea ones in the hope of getting a lower number card to win a Boeing card, and then these three turned up, which is Anissa Diop, which is quite cool because he used to play for the West West Dam, and then Ludwigson of Olsen HDSC. She thought that was a female player when I first opened it, uh, and Mikael or Yazabel, Raoul Sociudads, but she can't remember where they came from. Doesn't remember doesn't remember buying into that. They arrived anyway. But I don't like the slabs, I just don't I don't want them in the same context of my collection because they don't mean anything to me, so they've just remained in the slabs, but they're not they're not valuable numbered or low numbered cards by any means, but fun nonetheless.
SPEAKER_02:I'm thinking not allowed near them. I think like all the all the number cards I've got I've pretty much kept. I just you know they're sort of you know, the the ones the the good pulls or the good hits. So um I I get it that they haven't, you know, gone anywhere yet. Um but what is what is what's the uh what's the ideal card for you? What are you looking for? A Jared Bowen auto? Would that be that big of one?
SPEAKER_04:I think my thing for now obviously I can buy a Bowen Auto on on eBay, but in the Topps collection is Bowen's auto is numbered so that I've seen to five, twenty-five, fifty, seventy-five, one hundred, and unnumbered. So I mean call a spade a spade, it's essentially if you get a one of five, it's still one of three hundred, isn't it? So it that kind of that's kind of got lost on me a bit. Coomb has got me a decent uh tops auto from a few years ago, which I can't wait to get my hands on on. But what I'm after at the moment is just the lowest numbered card I can get from a West Ham. So and I look at them online, I I don't really similar to Laura, I want to win everything I've got. It needs to come from a break, or it needs to come from a packet. Like I don't I bought a few singles, but I bought two, I bought a Bowen patch card and a Bowen and Paquetta patch card from Ibo. Uh, but from the Select range, and they came when they're not numbered and they're not match one, they're just a West Hampshire. So I think all of the select uh select, isn't it? Yeah, all of the sort of select patches are just uh a West Hampshire next to a picture of Bowen. So it's cool as it is, like it is cool, like it looks nice, but once you actually know it's not really genuine, it's no good for me. So I just I would like to pull as low a numbered card as possible. I've only got a 25 so far. But I'm kind of done. The top hobby boxes are done in breaks, they're not around anymore, so we're waiting for Chrome Deco, um, like the next two things to come out just to see what West Ham cards are in the So yeah, you're obviously you're on the you're on the sort of you you like the rush and the adrenaline of the brakes, don't you?
SPEAKER_02:That's your sort of go-to you want to get ideally pull like a lower numbered West Ham card in a break would be your ideal situation, wouldn't it?
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, I'd like to pull one. Well I'd like to see one pulled for me, but um I don't just buy in singles, like there's some lovely stuff out there, but I mean I I messaged you guys in the group. I bought a Bowen Auto and a Bowen Gold Lion, and uh, what happened is basically I bid I was drunk on a train. I think it was like 36 quid for the two, I bid 16. He came back and said he counter-offered, and I counter-offered even lower. So yeah, I think I said 16, he said like 28, and I said 1350, and he's just seen that I've counter-offered and accepted it. So a week's gone by and then the dickhead's cancelled the order.
SPEAKER_01:So yeah, this is awesome.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, but he took a week to cancel it because I think he realised that I just sort of shafted him really, but it doesn't do anything for me. But when they arrive and have bought them as singles, I'm just not that into it. But then I think there's not a lot of historical stuff out there that would do a lot for me. We don't have a Stephen Gerrard, I don't I don't really want a vast Mark Noble collection, and we don't have many players that haven't stitched us up at some point, so I don't really want to back catalog the players that have left us.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, fair enough, fair enough.
SPEAKER_04:It's it is I do love the brakes, it's all about the brakes for me.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I love it. I definitely do enjoy it when I've done it, I just haven't done it enough. Um so I'm keen to get on Chapros and Hannah Brakes because you've obviously spoken highly of both. So yeah, um, I'm sure I'll um venture that way at some point.
SPEAKER_04:Um but there is a story that I've got the problem you have is obviously God.
SPEAKER_01:No, please, after you.
SPEAKER_04:The problem you have is obviously being a Liverpool fan, like a top hobby box is£140 if you could get your hands on one to divide into a random spot break. It's about£24, and then they select a random team, and you could still not get Liverpool. If you go onto Henner's breaks, it would be I think it's like normally a a two hobby box break would be like£22 per per box for the Liverpool spot. So you're paying£44 quid and there's gonna be two autos available, you might get them. For West Ham, it's like eight quid. So for the price of a hobby box, I could buy in for like 18 breaks, and that's why every week I'm hitting something. I mean it literally a West Ham card comes out of every box I've seen, but you've got to do it, but it is it's all about I think knowing the knowing what's in them. I I've I've looked at what Liverpool have got in tops, I've seen Liverpool never come out of tops hobby boxes, never. I think there's a one of five or a one of one around, and uh then you look at the um new signings box. And they're awful. Like there there is All I see is the um rat bag Kudas patch come out over and over again. Cause there are no no numbered no autos for most of the team. There's only eight eight of the teams have actually got a patch or an auto, so that's why they can't sell the hobby boxes, because when you're buying into a break, no one's gonna buy Napoli. But actually Napoli has got a De Bruyne, but that they won't buy certain teams because they will not get anything from it. So I think I'm learning more as I'm going about making sure you know what's in there before you go and buy into it. So I think the Deco and Chrome boxes for you, Liverpool it's worth it, but I've never seen a Liverpool card come out of a tops box.
SPEAKER_02:Very interesting, yeah, very true. I think um yeah, the first of all, the Summer Tinings collection, same as you, I'm not very impressed by it, don't really like not too keen on the design. Uh that's super expensive, the boxes. Um I don't think you get much out of it from what I've seen. Uh five packs of ten of the yeah, but what I am looking forward to, so I got a topps chrome box last year for it was just like the European European Cup, so like Europa League, Europa Conference, Champs League. And the cards from there are top draw, like they're really good, they're like quite thick, the design's really cool, really slick. Um, so to see a top scrolling Premier League um collection come out is very interesting. That should be really good, and it'll be the I think one of the first of its well, since tops take over and one of the first of its kind, so very exciting to see where that comes out. And obviously the deco collection, like you said, will be obviously on the back of the binder.
SPEAKER_04:On the back of the binder, there's an illustration of what the chrome cards are going to look like, isn't there? Like on the back of the um the regular tops binder, there's like a a fan of five cards to show you examples of what they look like. Um my only concern is that you you just look at the base collection of tops now and they look uh trash. Like if you compare what I've just uh spent a lot of money buying into to the Chrome, I'm suddenly this is what makes me not want to go for a Bowen Auto, is because I'm like, well, it will look like uh Premier League 92, 93 when you're on Premier League 2005 sticker book. You know, it will look like you're going back and you're seeing something that looks dated quite quickly. And I love the top I love the tops ones, but I do yeah, I think Chrome.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, true.
SPEAKER_02:I mean you're obviously doing really well off going into brakes picking West Ham for them being you know a lot cheaper than than say Liverpool. Um working for you, which is uh yeah, good for you, mate. Not for me, but good for you.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah. No, but I just I just I think you've just got to make sure you know what's it what's available before we buy into the Liverpool ones.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I didn't need to do my research really. That's the key. Very true. Right, we'll get on to should we go on to mail day? Mail day shop day? Yeah. Have you had any anything in the mail, mate? Any I'm sure you have from the breaks. Actually, first of all, let's let's go back to there was a story that um I think is um quite interesting that you said that you had something delivered to your home. And um well, I'll let you tell the story.
SPEAKER_04:I've had a lot delivered to my home, mate.
SPEAKER_02:So sorry, I meant about the one the one that went missing.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, so that was a the going the same the same uh run as the one a boo-bu or whatever it was Laura thought he was when it was Aaron Wan Basaka patch card that came out. I haven't told her, have I? Did I tell you that offline?
SPEAKER_01:You told me that before, yeah.
SPEAKER_04:I told us that on the story, yeah. Yeah. But then about two days later, we get a photograph of the front door with a with a delivery, and I mean East Croydon stuff gets nicked all the time.
SPEAKER_01:Hello. Alright. Hello. Wow. What's happening, boys? Wow, welcome to what's going on. Let's say welcome back. Um talk us through it. Should I finish my story quickly? Yeah, don't let him finish his story first.
SPEAKER_00:Talk us through that.
unknown:Sorry.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, I'll I'll just keep it brief, but yeah. So the um I'm waiting for the one besaka patch card. We get a photograph from Royal Mount, you've had a delivery. I'm I can't remember like some chiropractor or something. Get back half an hour later, nothing, no box, nothing there. And I thought it was the one bassaca patch card. We can't really work out what it was, it was something from a break that people we didn't watch or watch didn't have a week. So we contacted this breaker and we're like, we're clearly right, do not leave parcels outside because they will get stolen. And the breakers basically are like accusing us of trying to reclaim more numbered cards that we couldn't get anyway. And yeah, never got 'em, never got the money back. Royal mail, do not read their notes. They just like do not post, do not knock, do not leave. And so, yeah, I like I don't care because I got my one bass account to 25, but whatever was in there, I'll never know.
SPEAKER_01:RIGE KIM RIGHT, let's uh let's delve into Yeah, sorry. You're right. You're gonna have to I'm having a mare this morning, Boris.
SPEAKER_00:I've just spilt water all over my laptop. Give me a second, move on. Well, uh bringing the phone down then.
SPEAKER_02:We'll let you clear up the laptop, but first of all, um yeah, we've got to address um your your absence from the uh first half of the pod. Um talking through my lateness.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, I can I can explain it, boy. I'll tell you in a minute. I'm just having one of those days.
SPEAKER_04:Has this been pointed out before, but have you got a framed tree and curry loads?
SPEAKER_00:I have, mate, yeah. I've got a hold on. I'm trying to convert to my laptop. I thought I'll talk I talk you and the listeners through it. I I um I've got this trapped nerve in my leg. I took this tablet last night called like Tramador or something, like a nerve blocker, and it's just made me want to sleep. I feel like a zombie. Um that's what they do. You know, you know, when you um you set your alarm and then you you see the time. That's what's happened this morning. I've seen it and gone, oh shit. Um, and then I message you back, Mark, and then I look through all the times thinking, I've probably got this wrong. And I just saw that, yeah, we're supposed to have started the pod. So I thought, I'll just have a little look in the studio, see if the boys are are in there, which is why I'm on my phone. And you are, so I didn't expect that. Um so I'm trying to conf trying to convert to to the usual recording device. So uh I would urge you to continue while I uh get my shit in order.
SPEAKER_04:We are lagging and stalling again here.
SPEAKER_00:Martin's still staying.
SPEAKER_01:I caused the boy all sorts of problems.
SPEAKER_00:What were you what where were you at?
SPEAKER_04:What were you guys talking about, Don, before I uh So we've just been through my saga with uh well not saga, my success with Laura getting into breaks and buying a shed load of cards online uh and we've we've done a catch-up with a the football and we We're pretty much waiting for you to come back to discuss your wild accusations about my lack of focus in car collecting.
SPEAKER_00:Well your lack of focus, yeah. We'll uh we'll wait we'll wait for Martin that while while we're waiting for him to sort himself out, what um you may have covered this already, but what's are you are you happy at West Dam with uh Nunes there now and and a little upturning results?
SPEAKER_04:We sort of touched on the last couple of games and stuff, and the reason we won is because we played poor teams, yeah. But no, I think I don't I don't really like to admit to having Spurs fans as friends, but uh I went went for drinks with uh Anthony and uh he was basically just explaining like he the reason he failed at Spurs is because he didn't have that team. You need a big man up front, 442 and it won't work at us. Like our Falkrog's gone, Pikett's gone, so no, he's he won't last, unfortunately. I'd like him to do well, but we're never gonna sign Chris Wood, so it won't work.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. So you're not not not particularly optimistic.
SPEAKER_04:He's he's if I could have picked any manager last year, I actually said it, I was like, why do we never get a manager like Nuno? Yeah, then I would have I'm happy in that sense, but I just know our board won't back it. I know it will not work because the board has shot it.
SPEAKER_00:Ending to his yeah, I agree.
SPEAKER_04:It's gonna end the championship.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, yeah, true. Um if we're lucky. League one if we're not. Wow.
SPEAKER_00:You you've been down to League One, haven't you, in recent history?
SPEAKER_01:No.
SPEAKER_00:No?
SPEAKER_04:No, we've been to the champ well, championship in the old first division.
SPEAKER_00:Right, I'm gonna What I'm gonna do here, boys. I'm just gonna uh switch over, just bear with me.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, no problem.
SPEAKER_04:So I'm waiting for a buff.
SPEAKER_00:Apologise to the listeners for this absolute shit show I've caused. You boys had it under control, I've come in and just fucked it all up. So for that I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_02:Oh, I'll be back in the game.
SPEAKER_03:Um I mean yeah.
SPEAKER_02:We're gonna have to merge these two recordings together now by the looks of it. Oh, you can that all merge or uh editing that all merge.
SPEAKER_03:Okay.
SPEAKER_00:Anyway.
SPEAKER_01:Um well should we get get this uh still got reconnected on my screen on the road? Ah Tidy. There we go. Alright.
SPEAKER_02:The next one So Kun, to bring you up to speed, we had a little chat about football, about about Dom's um Dom's collection and what's happened since he's been on the pod. Um we didn't get into something that he said he wanted to wait until you were on the the episode. Um so I'll throw the baton over to Dom because he's got a bone to pick with you.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, well I I can't work out when we were online and offline. I think we just had this conversation while you were off. Uh yeah, just took it very I think I might actually shouted out loud, but I took it quite personally that you decided I, me, wasn't focused on what I was doing. Coom I feel very focused.
SPEAKER_00:That's too early for this. I've still got drugs in the system. What I think I think I think Dom what I meant by this was firstly no offence. Um none taken. Secondly was what I found is mainly mainly through my own experience, I came in like after I decided I wanted to get that Jackson Smith and Jigba car, then thought I really like cards, and then I wanted to race to get a decent um collection. But I think from the conversations I've had with you, you've correct me if I'm wrong, but you've gone down the tops road with uh the Premier League stuff, you've gone down the tops road with the match attack stuff, and you've realized that probably much like myself, that that probably isn't for you. Um and I think maybe me saying you lack direction, I would that was probably a bit after perhaps you found some direction where you're now looking at your um Jared Bowen autos numbered cards and stuff like that. Um but what I find is that you maybe maybe this is all uh what's it what's the uh equivalent to when you live vicariously through someone else? But maybe I'm using you to uh confess my own sins. Maybe it's me that lacks the direction. Maybe I think for me I definitely but you but I'm not wrong, am I? You know, you like me, you've stopped with the match attacks, you stopped with the tops because you now you want your Boeing autos, you want your low-numbered cards and things like that.
SPEAKER_04:Well, I I definitely lacked direction at the beginning because I I was buying cards last year that had nothing in them. I may as well have been buying top trumps, like they were they weren't a collection, they were just cards. And then this year went straight into the top stuff. And as I was saying in the what we call part one, we were I like doing the breaks just for fun. I mean, I've I've been showing uh I was showing Mart off uh a lovely little lovely little Aguero card I've got from a an Argentina break that's like it's nice. I mean I paid a quid for the buying, it just entertained me on the train home for half hour. Like, I mean, it's not about keeping the cards or having any type of purpose for them. But then when I when I bought the match attacks, it was just because I wanted to see what they looked like. Yeah, so I just bought the binder, bought a pack of the cards that came with a binder, had no interest in them, and gave them up. That's direction, boy. I just wanted to I just wanted to see what they look like.
SPEAKER_00:That is direction, yeah. I um yeah, maybe maybe it's me that needs to to sort myself out. I'm I'm gonna try and guide you away from the subject, really. Um for convenience to me, but what I want to know is I watched a break the other day, right? And I think we've talked about this before. Over here, like particularly in New Zealand, and you guys with that got, you know, like uh C S, you know, um this is bad. Arm and not on form this morning, Stew and Cardsley breaks, you've got like little communities and stuff like that. But what I found recently is I'm getting I did a break the other day, right, where I thought it was the end of a case and the colour blast hadn't come up, so we're all in this break to get the colour blast. Colour blast doesn't come up, but some guy gets a Tyree kill dolphins one of one um in Phoenix, right? Now, let me set the scene. I usually buy dolphins as like a secondary team because I collect two uh tagova cards, um, and I would say maybe 50% of the breaks I go in I'll have dolphins, but on this break I didn't have dolphins, and the guy that won got the one-on-one had it through a filler break, so he didn't, in essence, he didn't really want dolphins, he just got dolphins right now in the you should be like you know, if you mates and that when they get an absolute banger, you should be like, oh nice one, feel good for you. Um I'm definitely gonna have to tick the uh button for this. But the first thought I had is what, cunt like, you know what I mean? Like, I was just and I feel like when you talk about the well, when I talk about direction, I feel like I'm I'm going down a dark hole. I'm not happy for these people. I want the colour blast, I want the 101. Um that's the fun gone for me. That's what I'm asking. Am I taking this too seriously? Um, but you get but that but that said, Francisco.
SPEAKER_04:Once I'm happy with what my whole don't have any direction, mate. Yeah, if you if you were by just Pehawks cards, you wouldn't have this problem.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, well, you do you know something, mate? I think you're right, and I think the honest truth is uh you know, that like I said, that equivalent to living the opposite of living vicariously through someone else. Maybe I was venting my problems and um disguising it as you who lacks direction. Uh I need to get my shit together.
SPEAKER_04:It is it it it harks back to what you said on the on the pod when I've not been here a few times about and me and Mark were talking about it before as well. Uh the buying into breaks when you don't when you don't pick your own team. Like it's absolutely pointless. Like, it is pointless. I got an Anton Semenyo auto from the first break I did, and he's a good player, like I like him, it's a cool card to have as my first auto. But if if it wasn't the first one, I'd never keep it because it doesn't mean anything. Because it's the first auto I got from the break, I'd I'll keep it and see if he moves anywhere better.
SPEAKER_00:But if you're with that though, Don, you you know, like we we spoke about because I can I I can't fully get my head around, as you're aware, that the you know, the the random teams for Premier League football because we've we've all grown up on football. So like you're a West Ham fan, I'm Liverpool, Mark's Liverpool. I don't really want anyone else, so I find it hard if if like yourself you get a Semenyo or to me that would be like trade bait, or you'd sell it. Um it's different in the NFL, it's just different culture, it's different, you know, there's players that you want to collect and things like that. So primarily, but even with the Seahawks, I get people like really cool people from the community to get a Seahawk card and and will message me and go, Oh, do you want this? And it will be like, I don't know, some runner that's not the right thing to say, runner-the-mill player. And I'm when I when I didn't have direction, I go, Yeah, yeah, I'll take up every single Seahawks card. Now I'm like, I I'm sticking to my you know my JSN collection, and then there's a few other players, AJ Barner and whatnot. Um but sometimes with NFL, I think, particularly last year, the live up the Seahawks players weren't particularly valuable, and there wasn't a lot of them. So I would go in for other teams, try and get an absolute banger, and then you can use that to trade for what you want or sell, generate some money to get what you want, if that makes sense.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, like a crackhead.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_04:If you like, willing to sell my ass to get what I need. Yeah, I mean you kind of the advice you keep giving on the pod is that you should just be buying singles, and you probably should.
SPEAKER_00:That is true. Although I have bought a few singles, I've had a few turn up this week. Um, I keep saying though, I think I even said it on the pod, didn't I? About four episodes ago, that that's it, that's me done with breaks. I've got one in about half an hour.
SPEAKER_04:Oh, you you had time to book that today, did you?
SPEAKER_00:No, no, it was yesterday. This is prior to uh it was I can't I can't, but but like you said, it's just for fun, isn't it? Like I absolutely love it. It's like a different element of it, and it's uh we know it's gambling, we know it's uh but it is fun, isn't it? Even when you've submitted, you've bought into it, and you know it's coming out. That's sort of part of that that break experience. I'm addicted, mate.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, I just I just think it's a good way to kill time on the train. Look, it's just a laugh. I do very well out of them because there's a load of West Ham cards in tops, but yeah, so it's just entertainment. It is just fun.
SPEAKER_00:I know I've missed this and you probably don't want to go into it again, but what's um give me a brief breakdown of uh Laura's involvement and what she's doing. Is she still she's still involved?
SPEAKER_04:You might just have to listen to the first half with everybody else.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. I look forward to it.
SPEAKER_04:Because I I mean I I would tell you, but I did cover it quite extensively, so I think people will switch off if I start the story again.
SPEAKER_00:I I'll I'll listen to it, I'll uh I'll look forward to it.
SPEAKER_04:Um she is still involved, um, she loves it. Nice male days are busy.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, that's Mark. That's that's gotta be the dream scenario, isn't it? If uh I keep trying to get Emma into it, she's been into two breaks, but yeah, that'd be nice, but I mean I I think I touched on can I off air is hard to remember now.
SPEAKER_04:I'm on part three here because we had a good 45 minutes on offline waiting to see if you were coming. We've done part one and now you're here, so I don't know what to say of what I haven't.
SPEAKER_02:But but uh right Laura's brought herself up. I'll our address was episode coom, you little tramadoll head. Uh yeah. Uh with um me and me and Don were talking in the in the green room for quite some time, obviously, waiting for you. Uh but there was um a good subject we wanted to bring up um in regards to conspiracy conspiracy theories. Now I saw a video of a guy going off on a rant on TikTok about how he thinks that a lot of the let's say higher lower numbered cars and like really good autos were put in boxes and given to more influencers or YouTubers to break develop content. Um what's your view on that? Do you do you do you think that that's he's got a fair point or do you think he's bitter?
SPEAKER_00:Um yeah, I I I think I this is so interestingly, this is uh links into something very similar. So I think when when I watch the breaks over here in New Zealand with the hobby stuff, I'm convinced it'd be interesting to see what like say Nick thinks of this, for example. But I feel like I know the volume of boxes doesn't is not the same that gets opened, but I definitely feel that it's not random. So I feel like they know the manufacturers and and dis well not the distributors, sorry, the manufacturers, they know roughly where the hits are going. So whether or not they they know down to a point where an influencer can have a specific box and they have a fair idea of what's in there, I don't know. But I do believe that they know when they're you know supplying to the distributors where the hits are going, if that makes sense. So I think they know what countries have roughly what hits, you know, what distributors have what hits and stuff like that. So I feel like, yeah, and there's an element of truth in it. I've they're definitely aware, it's not a case of everything's packaged and then literally sent out at random. I think that they have uh a lot of control over where the hits go. Um but but I what I should say, just in case there's um you know, like I I I that's based on no evidence. That's just to me, it's common sense, isn't it? Like, and I think there's that there will be an element of truth in that. Because they'll send they'll send that, they'll there's benefits, isn't there, to these influencers, because they're massive. Like you and I could name all three of us could probably name, like you've got that Luke Solves, for example, and then there's like all these other people, there's the King of Cards, and obviously you've got Ken Golden with golden auctions and stuff like that. You know, all the you can name so many influencers, so much benefit to having them pull in hits, having the content, and continuing to grow grow the hobby. It's in you know, am I wrong in saying it's it's a form of marketing? Um so I think that yeah, I think they definitely have control of where or are aware of where the cards go, whether or not that's down to the level that certain individuals they could you know they could know what if there's a hit in that box. I don't know. What what are your thoughts?
SPEAKER_04:Well, I mean I've got quite strong thoughts on it. I mean ultimately every pack of tops cards you buy has the same base cards, and then it'll have a couple of inserts and then it'll have a parallel. And every hobby box you buy will have one pack with one auto and one pack with one patch. In all the breaks I've watched, it never goes off off away from that. I think in my head I picture them printing all the cards and randomly putting them in boxes, but it's just not how it works, it's just not they they have people come in to sign the cards and they have the that they get printed off a machine, they get put in a pile, they get signed, and then they get put into packages. But it's ultimately like Willie Wonka's golden ticket. If there's a one-of-one, there's a dual auto one of one of Ekatique and Isaac in the summer signings box, the second that's found, people are going to stop paying big money for boxes because that's the one that's worth money. So I I think it's obviously they need to hold back the big cards. I was listening to a break the other day, a 2016-17 something or other Chrome box, and there was a a messy auto one of one that hasn't been found, so therefore boxes can sell for 20,000, because if you get that card, it's worth 80 or something. So it is when you want to scar and ticket. If they're all found, I mean otherwise you would see packets with two patches in two autos. You never will. They know where everything is.
SPEAKER_00:Yep, yeah. But if you if you look on um if you went with hobby boxes like NFL and you know, baseball, basketball, and that they'll tell you what the box breakdown is. So they there's no lying or or or um uh what's the word? Where they're trying to be deceitful, so they know in your box it will tell you. I mean, they're clever, they use on average. So like some of the boxes, some of the breaks recently were gonna also short, so they'll you can't do nothing about it because it's on average, but generally they'll tell you when you look at the products and you look at the checklist, they'll say, right, in this hobby box, on average, you're gonna get two autos, two mem cards, four inserts, and a parallel, you know, you know, that type of thing.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, and the only way they can cheap back cheap.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, but you you I think you've hit the nail on the head there, is if you when you look at let let's take a new product, right? So over here, the breakup in this afternoon is mosaic football, right? As in NFL. Um so over here it's new release in America two weeks ago, I think, possibly earlier, but essentially it's a new release. So you look at the checklist and you look at all the different one-on-ones, for example, if they just if they've made all the one-on-ones already and they've all gone out and everyone finds them within the first two weeks, then that you know, if that's what you're after, then you're gonna lose a lot of people from buying that product. Um the same applies to a case break. So if you, as a breaker or a or a distributor, have a case of um let's go with Phoenix football, right? Because you've got a colour blast. So on average, again, you'll have one colour blast card, which is the is the chase, that's the big chase, that's what everyone's after in that product. You'll have one colour blast per case break. So as a breaker, let's say you sell your first three boxes of 20 as a of a break, everyone buys in and you pull the colour blast in the first three boxes, then it's going to be harder as a breaker to sell the remaining 17 boxes for breaks because you know the colour the colour blast has already gone. Um, but yeah, like linking to your question, yeah. For me, I don't know if it's uh that as as fine a detail as particular breakers get particular boxes, but it wouldn't surprise me because it makes good business, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_02:Very much so.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_04:So where where are we voting? I vote conspiracy.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, um yeah, I'm partial to a conspiracy theory, yeah. Oh yeah, go on, I'll I'll get the hat trip ball. But we don't want any legal action.
SPEAKER_02:Nope, I think we've already ADP. We've A net little birds. We're not peddling the narrative.
SPEAKER_04:I took a swipe at the Brighton fans today just for a laugh.
SPEAKER_00:Oh why not easy targets?
SPEAKER_04:Exactly.
SPEAKER_00:MC, have you have you discussed the Brighton card show yet?
SPEAKER_02:I haven't, no. That was um next on my list actually. Um yeah, I'll be in attendance um on a Saturday, the 15th of November, uh Amex Football Stadium, Brighton, the home of Brighton Hobalb and FC. Um there is a sports card and memorabilia show. Um and I finally got donated two VIP tickets from James. James hauling from Dogma, so um RRP uh 35 quid a pop, so free of charge, yes please. Um so I will be there and I will be yeah looking for certain cards now. As you're both on, I'll be looking for JSN cards for yourself, Coon. Uh maybe some bone cards for yourself, Dom. So um keep your um phones around you on Saturday. I know you'll be working dominably hard, um, but I will keep you posted on if I find anything. Um, because I'll be there for a little while, probably be doing doing some videos and taking some pictures, get some content if you will. And um yeah, really looking forward to it actually.
SPEAKER_01:Um get a selfie with uh loop solved with a that'd be nice. Little VIP lounge as well. I could do a live pod, couldn't I? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:You definitely get some good content, it'll be good, but I bet there'll be loads of other people there with cameras and whatnot trying to get content and doing breaks and stuff.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, should be um should be good, should be interesting, should be a good crowd, and um yeah, watch his space for um for what I got.
SPEAKER_00:So what I'd like to see MC from you or from you at the Amex would be when you first enter, because I think a lot of people have said this, you know, when uh people go to the first card show or they they turn up for the first time and you open the doors, there's actually a buzz. So don't you know like even Don, you're talking about breaks and the fun of it. I'll tell you something. I've done one card show and it was in Wellington, and when you open the doors and you look out, and there's a ton of people, and it's just like tables and tables of cards. Something I I don't know, you might laugh, but it does something to you, it's quite good. So I'd quite like to see you when you first go in there filming your reactions talk us through that feeling because we spoke about that when your brother was on, didn't we? About what our plan would be if we went to the national. Um, but I'd quite like to see what you feel when you first go in there and you see all the cards because there is a buzz from it, there is a buzz. Um, you know, you we do all the breaking and we and we have our PCs and and you do that. But when you when you look in that hall and you think, like again, use you Dom, you're on your your Jared Bowens. If you see the tables there, you think, oh, there's got to be a Boeing out there. There's a fun from rifling through them stalls trying to find those Jared Bowen cards. Um so yeah, I think you're yeah, that first moment for you MC is gonna be good, I think.
SPEAKER_04:I think what you what I'd really be looking for would be Julian Dix. Well that's some old Panini Julian Dix. Yeah. Because Boeing Boeing's gonna be at the front of every West Ham section, they know what that's what they'll be selling. But if you can find a Julian Dix uh like an old card, that'll be wild.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, your uh your wishes, Michael Arthur.
SPEAKER_00:Uh Julian Dix. Isn't uh story didn't he used to not warm never warm up and then they'd just have a can of coke before he went out and played, just cracked on a bit.
SPEAKER_04:I mean I I don't know, but it looks right looking at him. Yeah, absolutely. There's many, many great stories about Julian Dix. That's another podcast.
SPEAKER_00:Um uh MC, what are you looking for when you get there? You are you are you buying or are you just soaking it up? Are you gonna try and sell anything? Are you gonna take anything to sell? Uh not gonna take anything to sell.
SPEAKER_02:Um, I will be mainly going for the experience. Um secondly going to see obviously if there's any Gerald cards.
SPEAKER_00:Um but yeah, mainly like I'm not really looking to pick up your first traded card.
SPEAKER_02:Potentially, potentially. Um it's a whole new experience for me.
SPEAKER_01:And I could memorial section will be good.
SPEAKER_02:Say again. What was that, Dom?
SPEAKER_04:The memorabilia section will be good as well.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, so they sell like like football shirts and yeah, signed bits and bobs, so um I'll keep my eyes peeled, but um, yeah, I'm not really sure what what I'm doing to a degree like I'm not really going there for any sort of with any sort of big direction. It's just sort of you know, go there, experience it, take it all in, feed it back.
SPEAKER_00:My um going off that conversation we had when your brother was on, and the advice I heard was when you go in, if you want to like just browse first but you see stuff that you're considered just make a note of where you saw it. So if you post it note down, top tip drop a pin.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, yeah. Right, Queen. Um what's that? Is it in the stands or something, or how's that how does it work? Yeah, not really sure actually. I think it must be I'm not too sure. It doesn't really specify. Obviously, there's so much room.
SPEAKER_04:They've got function rooms in there. They've got function rooms they use for what awards ceremonies and things it'll be in there.
SPEAKER_01:We're still in the middle of the season.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, I didn't realise it's bloody international week. I looked at the fixtures last night um and saw England are playing like I I lost interest to be honest. The second I saw it was international, it's point pointless.
SPEAKER_02:Um so well let's um as you've finally arrived into the episode, it's only fair that we go to you first for um mail day.
SPEAKER_01:What have you had this week, Chief?
SPEAKER_00:Um yeah, can you can you go to Dom first? And I'm just gonna run and get my mail stuff because like uh I've let you down, I'll continue to let you down. I've not bought my mail day stuff, so bear with me. Not a problem. Tramadol's still still still wearing through the veins, is it?
SPEAKER_02:Go on in Dom, what you got?
SPEAKER_04:Well, fucking hell, I didn't know I need to be organised. So uh to be honest this week. So I went into my first summer sign-ins break just with a with a random pick. Actually, I say I did, Laura did, uh, and then she went to work and left me to watch it. Um so I got a I got Newcastle randomly, got a Melikhaw 28.99. They're nothing special. I'm not a big fan of these these ones, but it's a one-in-one out. Um I had two select patches that I bought as we discussed earlier as well, like sort of singles, but but they're not match warm, the select ones, they're just random kits. So I don't even think they ever even belong to the player. I just think they're a West Ham kit in a patch, so that's my days of select patches gone, but in for a penny, in for a pound. And then yeah, did a did a little Argentina break on a train home, got Sergio Aguero in a bidding. I don't think you send these code where you go into a into a break, but you get 40 seconds to bid on. So this is an Argentina box, and you bid on each player, so you get 40 seconds and you just outbid each other. So I got Sergio Aguero and Nico Paz for one pound each, but they're nice cards, but this will literally sit in my box for a week, and then I'll probably just give it to Martin because I like looking at it for a little bit, and then I'm like, I don't want to look at that anymore. Yeah, so I've had I've had a couple of singles from eBay, a couple of brake deliveries.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, but I think you're quite a unique case, aren't you, to the hobby?
SPEAKER_04:How's that?
SPEAKER_00:Well, just the the amount that you give away and your self-confession there that you'll probably get bored of looking at it, so you'll give it away.
SPEAKER_04:Well, I just like it because I liked the brake. It cost me a quid.
SPEAKER_00:I do think it's a nice car, but it's can I start getting you in some uh Seattle Seahawks brakes, please?
SPEAKER_04:Not 68.99 a pop, no.
SPEAKER_00:Maybe I need to speak to Laura, just start sowing the seed.
SPEAKER_04:Maybe I went through the breakdown earlier, but just in terms of like how many brakes I can go into as a West Ham fan because we're so cheap to buy, but we hit all the time. West Ham hits every bloody thing. It's eight quid a pop.
SPEAKER_00:I hope the uh the Jared Bowen I've got oh, he's gone. I hope the Jared Bowen I've got for you stays in your PC. I'll be fantastic for you two years down the line.
SPEAKER_04:100%. Take pride of play.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, it's a beauty. I've put it, I've got a little sticker on it for you, Coom and Curry uh Sports Guard sticker on there for you.
SPEAKER_04:So we touched earlier just the idea of when when the Tops Chrome comes out, the Tops now won't look so good.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, oh yeah.
SPEAKER_04:And but Boeing, there's basically about Boeing is numbered to five, ten, twenty-five, fifty, seventy-five, a hundred, and unnumbered for an auto in tops. So they don't really mean anything. Whereas the one the collection, the one you've got it from, I've never I've not seen it before, so yeah, it will very much stay in my collection.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, no, it's it is nice, but I think but like for you, you know, like uh with autos, for example, if you've got a few Bowens, I think the the goal has to be to get an on card. Um because a lot of you know, a lot of people say they never used to have sticker autos, but now they just give that stick that sheet of stickers to the players, they just sign sheets and sheets and sheets and then they stick them on. For you, I think the goal has to be perhaps keep an eye open for an on-card, an on-card bowing auto. Then you know the players had the card.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, because these they're quite clever, these, because they look obviously because they're transparent stickers, they do look on card, yeah, but it is yeah, it is a sticker, yeah. It's just a sticker.
SPEAKER_00:Most of them are these days, but like I've got yeah. I think I've got um I'll see. I've got one jumping the gun. I'll catch I'll come to it in a minute, shortly.
SPEAKER_04:Right, Travadale. Let's stay on track. Mail Day, who's next?
SPEAKER_00:Travadale. Yeah, great. I'm going to yeah, so mail day for me. I've got I sp I said this last night on a break, I've got my sixth uh Elijah Arroyo RPO. Um that's from Impeccable, so it's quite a cool patch. It's again done not from a specific game or event, so it's just a piece of uh and I've seen videos where they they break them open and it says on the back who whose it is, it's probably just a random player, um, but still a beautiful card. Shame the auto is in red, but it is a sticker auto. So again, what would make that better is blue ink on a directly on the card, but yeah, still a nice card, so I got that. Um Malik neighbours from the Giants, got that in a break. An example of me buying another team just to make it more important. Yeah, and then I bought a another JSN rookie card from Obsidian that's numbered up to 135, and then this is not that exciting because the patch is just it's just a napkin or something, you know, it's just a one one colour patch, but it's national treasures, so I didn't have a national treasures JSN. Um I thought that was quite a nice card, not from his rookie year, but it's numbered to 99, so it's quite nice. And this for me was a nice hit from a break. So this was from Black Football, which is five cards. Um expensive, the box is uh$600, and you get five cards. But luckily I got this Jalen Milrow numbered to 99, which I don't think the light's doing any favours, but it's quite it's a really nice card. So yeah, that was my mail day. So yeah, quite pleased. Some good stuff for the PC.
SPEAKER_04:$600 and five cards.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. Well, yeah, I luckily for me, yeah. I think my buy-in was perhaps fifty dollars, forty dollars, something like that. Oh fine, okay, shit. Yeah, I didn't I didn't buy the box. That's wild.
SPEAKER_03:Right.
SPEAKER_02:Thought that might have been the case, that's why you weren't on the pod. I thought you may have uh delved into a uh$1,000 box or something.
SPEAKER_00:So I can I can tell you now, I can exclusively reveal that the break I'm supposed to be in is starting right now. So I'm gonna I'm gonna put it on in the background.
SPEAKER_02:Well, not with disrespect. Turns up late.
SPEAKER_00:No, but turns up late. I'm in the early days, you're getting a live break. Get a live break. You I think you were talking in the early days about getting one of these to like do a live break on the podcast. It'll be quite interesting.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, it'd be great.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_04:But it needs to be one in the feds.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, well, I've got I've got sea in this one. I've got some look. Just sea hawks by the looks of it.
SPEAKER_04:I don't think he's gonna pay attention now, mate. Oh no, I'm pretty coming next week.
SPEAKER_02:Well, lucky for you, Coon, my mail day was very slim, but it was a big card. So I got a Top Chrome Flashbacks LA Galaxy Stephen Gerrard card, which is numbered six to seven, which is on uh like a shimmer. Um that's nice, yeah. It is my lowest number Stephen Gerrard card, so that goes straight to the top of the top of the PC. Um, phenomenal. Um really happy that I've got that.
SPEAKER_00:Um so yeah, looking forward to seeing what I might pick up from the is there do you is it have you checked the condition thoroughly? Is there any scope to have that one graded?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, there might be, yeah. It's in very good condition. Um yeah, it looks really good to be honest. I did have a look when it first came through.
SPEAKER_00:Get some pictures over for the pod. Uh for for the pod, for Instagram. Yeah, don't worry, boy, that come over.
SPEAKER_02:Um but yeah, that that's it for me. Um obviously I had a big week, I had a big week the week before then with um the Gerald cards, but um yeah, let's um let's move swiftly on to a regular segment of all about that base. We are in live. We are live and in all about that base. Um now as previously discussed in the episode, Dom um, I met with Dom on Friday evening. He's actually given me the card that he's gonna um submit to the binder, which is very kind of him. Um so um I'll hold it up, but Dom, if you want to talk, talk us through the card you're submitting for the uh all about that base binder.
SPEAKER_04:So this is uh letting go of a West Ham base card, but it's uh yeah, the Prism. I went into I went into a four-year split on these. So we did 21, 22, 22, etc. And unfortunately somebody voted to do them backwards. So 23, 24 is all these like disco ball cards like with that edging on it. By the time we got back to the first box, they were so crap I had no interest in what came out of it. Uh didn't get any didn't get anything numbered, but I got plenty of base, and uh as Paquetta will be the next player out of my club. I thought he could be the next base card out of my collection.
SPEAKER_00:I like that. Yeah. Got a lot of jump to that. Like that jumper, Mark. Thanks for yeah, lovely.
SPEAKER_02:Uh first of all, Mitchell's gracias, um Dom for that for that base card. Um, you'll probably have heard that very organized. You'll probably have heard a hint of Spanish there from myself, um, which leads me kindly into my all about that base, um which um I again uh from Friday evening, Dom kindly gave me five packs of Spanish La Liga Panini cards. Um are they panini? They are panini, aren't they? Yes.
SPEAKER_00:Um, you're already giving them away.
SPEAKER_04:I've got 15 packs for you for when we all come over, mate. Oh I don't I've rephrased that. I've got 15 packs for all of us for when you come over. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Well, um, yeah, I I I opened all five packs earlier, and I thought, what a way to put a base card in. Not only from a uh that have been imported from Spain, should we say, but also for the guest that's on on the pod for Dom. So that card is none other than a Rodrigo to pull Athletico Madrid card there. Um so uh yeah, first Spanish import card into the binder.
SPEAKER_00:It's quite that's quite topical, actually, that card, that player. Because didn't he wasn't there a story midweek of him and Messi uh sneaking into the new camp? The the guard or something, he's he was about to get a flight, wasn't he? He had a meal out because he's on international duty in Alicante and um turned rocks up at the stadium, I believe, just over little butchers, and the the guard is like no no no, and then he saw it was Messi and he's like in you go, son. But he said uh Rodrigo the Paul was uh was filming him doing it.
SPEAKER_04:Tagging it along.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, that's quite funny. Unintentional. Yeah. So good choice.
SPEAKER_01:Thank you, sir. Over to you.
SPEAKER_00:Um can I cheat? Can I go with two? Do we not?
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, so no, you can't do what you want because uh when you tried to put an insert in that day, I actually shouted at myself walking through Preston Park. I was like, what are you doing? And then luckily Cream said it.
SPEAKER_02:Um sorry, yeah, let me rephrase that. Don't do what you want, but you can put two in because you do owe us one for being substantially late to the TFC. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Great, right. I'm gonna go with uh I'm gonna go with a DeMarcus Lawrence, Phoenix base. Uh he now plays for Seahawks, and he charged down uh the Arizona quarterback twice, collecting the ball, scoring two quarterbacks, uh, two quarterbacks, two touchdowns in the last game, uh, making that the fourth touchdown of his career, two of which came in that one game. So I'm gonna go with a DeMarcus Lawrence. Nice and then on the keeping it topical, me having my brief complaint about this uh this uh break entrant getting his uh Tyreek Hill one of one. I thought I'd go with a Tyreek Hill base card for this week. So that's what more for the the people that like their sort of photography base cards, but a cool card.
SPEAKER_03:Nice.
SPEAKER_00:I thought I'd add that in, yeah. So nice additions. One for the please accept one as the apology for my shit somewhere. Accepted but yeah, nice additions. We've got to decide perhaps when I'm down what what card we're gonna get graded.
SPEAKER_01:Um to that's it.
SPEAKER_00:The agenda I've got one question to you both. I heard on another podcast, sports card nonsense. Um very good podcast if anyone wants to listen. So uh not trying to steal their content, but interested in the question. Um when Panini bought out Prism cards in I think it was 2012, they said, um, a lot of the base cards now are quite collectible. That was the first Prism set. My question to you boys is when tops so obviously you've got tops basketball is out now, but you've got tops NFL coming out next year for the next season, do you think those base cards will hold more value long term because it's the first top set under licence without Panini? Do you think there's any value in that? Do you think they'll be a bit more valuable having been the first set?
SPEAKER_04:I think possibly. I think the thing is when you are looking to collect a specific thing and everybody's collecting the same thing, it's the bit that's considered junk that will probably end up being the most valuable. Like a if there's a one-off player that never makes it that becomes like a full hero or becomes like a bloody Vinny Jones or something, and then it's like, well, there's a base card of his that no one kept it because it's just a base card.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_04:So I think there's that always that chance that the thing that nobody looks after becomes the most valuable thing in it. Um yeah, because it's the first one, maybe.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, I think it's probably worth from that set keeping all the rookie base cards, because I think somewhere down the road, you know, 12-15 years down the road, they'll be the ones that uh that are quite sought after, you know, particularly being from that first set under licence.
SPEAKER_04:But with the tops, with the top set this year, because I've got a binder just for all the base cards, just because I had so many, I was like, I just gonna get a base card, and I've I've been sure to not put any parallels in there because I think that the ones that have got loads of parallels, people will keep the parallels and not the base.
SPEAKER_00:Are you inspired by all about that base?
SPEAKER_04:I have inspired by all about that entire, yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Nice.
SPEAKER_04:Um who knows? One day we could be millionaires, Rodney.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, what are you saying, M2?
SPEAKER_02:Um, yeah, I think I'll agree. Like obviously, I mean we've still got the whole debate about rookie cards for football, for soccer, should I say. Um yeah, maybe you maybe it's a good point. Hold on to them. Um, and then who knows like 10-15 years down the line when maybe they have hit the heights of you know, uh playing at a big club, you know. Who knows, Joe Bellingham? Maybe he goes on to pay for Real Madrid and he and he likes up the world, and then we've got a rookie card from Sunderland. Um might be worth a bit, but it's all about timing, isn't it? You hold on to these things with dependent on how their career goes. You know, we spoke about this in depth in we're about in Gamoa. Um like I watched him against Palace when we got battered 3-0 in the League Cup, and he was just like, yeah, non-existent, really. Um does his values go down from that, probably a little bit. Um because he played near enough the whole game, played like 70-80 minutes.
SPEAKER_04:It's all about he's he's being popularised by the cards, not by real life.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, 100%. 100%.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, like the cards have decided he's the one, but yeah, he could never make it. He could be playing, he could end up like he was that Liverpool player that went to Bournemouth, the right winger, who was supposed to be bringing. That's the one, yeah. Absolutely awful. Yeah, but the um when me and Mark were met up on Friday, we were going through the stuff, and we would because we weren't really concentrating on talking to each other because we were looking at the cards and we both made the same point. Why have Fulham just got portrait pictures instead of full length? Everybody's got full-length pictures except Fulham, they're just portraits and they're really weird. And then I said earlier, like, I got the Reese Orford auto of a West Ham rookie player. I've never seen him on the bench this year, like he's not he's never gonna play for the club. He's never killing them. Yet Max Dauman at Arsenal is not in the collection. And if you go to Spurs, Vicario is not the goalkeeper, they've put a rookie goalkeeper in. So why Vicario is not in the collection at all, I don't know, but they've gone for the rookie. Maybe political objection or something, but it's just there's a lot of weird stuff with it where they're clearly picking things for the cards.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, yeah, gotcha.
SPEAKER_04:They obviously wanted to get one more rookie into the Tottenham side, so they just vacated their goalkeeper, and it they don't mean anything in in um football, they mean nothing, rookie cards, nothing.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, and I'll hear you. It's um but I agree with what you said about the the cards dictating. That's kind of what we alluded to when we were talking about those rookie diamonds of Engamoa, is they've randomly picked him, uh, and the same with Brighton. Uh I guess all the others, to be fair. But it's then there's all this hype, so you see the Premier League, anything Ngamoa goes for quite a bit of money, especially an Engamoa auto. Some of the prices I've seen is insane, but he's just hoping obviously as a Liverpool fan. I hope he becomes a big star, but it's very unlikely.
SPEAKER_04:He won't be worth as much as the cards.
SPEAKER_00:Maybe someone will buy him for one of his autos.
SPEAKER_04:You pop him into the fiddler's elbow team, Mart.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. You've got an Ingamoa card, Mark, aren't you? I've got a couple of Engamoa cards, yeah.
SPEAKER_02:There you go. I think I've got I've got a um like a blue parallel rookie card of his, but who knows?
SPEAKER_01:Could be worth a bit in time. Just looking at this break, the last card out. No, it's not for me, I don't think. Talk of shrook, eh?
SPEAKER_00:I think it's like a case here. It's it's called like night lights, and it's got like silver pen on the top of it, but it's lions, I think, by the looks of it. It's a beautiful card. Yeah, five there you go, five cards. Nothing for me. Disgusting.
SPEAKER_04:50 quid?
SPEAKER_00:Can't remember. One dollar.
SPEAKER_02:Wow. On that bomb show.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. Well, for for my uh my shorter period of appearance, it's been a pleasure. Uh again, apologies to the listeners, apologies to you two, apologies to our guest for being late.
SPEAKER_04:I'm looking forward to you listening to it, Cube.
SPEAKER_00:Oh me too. Oh, I'm gonna listen to it almost straight away. I'll finish this this uh thingy, and then while it's uploading, I'll uh I'll be cracking on with it. Or I might wait until I'll wait until it's on Spotify to get the viewing numbers up. Yeah. Right. Good lads. Boys, I'm off.
SPEAKER_02:It's been it's been fun. It's been something regardless of what you found. These cheers for coming on, done. Much appreciated.
SPEAKER_04:Pleasure. See you guys soon.
SPEAKER_02:See you, man. On the next one.
