On December 16, 1908, mill workers in Manchester, New Hampshire opened St. Mary’s Bank, the first credit union in the United States. Built on trust, shared ownership, and community responsibility, it gave working families access to savings and loans for the first time and challenged how financial institutions defined risk, value, and profit.
