Perianal abscesses are localized collections of pus within the perianal tissues, typically originating from an infection of an anal gland located at the anal verge.
The Primary Cause: Cryptoglandular Infection
The most frequent cause of these abscesses is cryptoglandular infection. This process begins when an anal gland becomes obstructed. Common triggers for this blockage include:
Stool or debris.
Edema (swelling).
Local trauma, gland injury, or bacterial inoculation from activities such as anal intercourse.
