Today, we’re asking what obedience looks like when believers aren’t under law.
What keeps people from sinning?
What if the New Covenant answer isn’t a stronger rulebook, but God Himself?

new covenant obedience begins with a settled relationship. Now, let’s talk about obedience.
We say, “You’re saved by grace, not by works.” But if your behavior becomes the proof that your salvation is real, haven’t works quietly been brought back in through the back door?
Prayer, sharing your faith, studying Scripture, and serving people all matter.
But none of them are the foundation of your relationship with God or a performance report proving that God accepted you.
Under the Old Covenant, obedience was connected to blessing and punishment.
Do this and you’ll be blessed.
Disobey and you’ll experience the curse.
But New Covenant obedience begins with a settled relationship.
You don’t obey so God will accept you.
You respond because you’ve already been accepted in Christ.
You don’t obey to become forgiven.
You live as someone who is already forgiven.
You don’t obey to get closer to God.
You’ve already been united with Him.
Romans 6:14 says, “… sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.”
Paul didn’t say sin would lose its mastery because we received stricter rules.
He said it would lose its mastery because we’re under grace.
If law is what keeps people from sinning, why did Paul say sin loses its mastery over us when we’re no longer under law, but under grace?
Because law can describe righteousness, but it cannot produce righteousness within you.
A flashlight can reveal the mess in a dark room, but it can’t clean it up.
The law can reveal and condemn sin. But it cannot create life, give you a new heart, or produce the Spirit’s fruit through you.
Galatians 5:18 says, “But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”
We say the Spirit leads us, but hand believers the law just in case He isn’t enough.
We say Christ lives in us, but treat Christians like spiritual criminals needing constant supervision.
That’s Christian Double-Talk.
If a believer is no longer governed by the law, does that mean nothing governs them, or have they been given Someone far greater than a rulebook?
You aren’t governed by nothing.
You’re led by Someone.
The Holy Spirit lives in you. You’re joined to Christ, a new creation learning to live from His life within you.
That doesn’t mean every decision will be perfect. It means you’re no longer trying to manage yourself with a rulebook.
Think about a fruit tree.
An apple tree doesn’t stand in an orchard saying, “I have to prove I’m an apple tree. What if I don’t produce enough?”
The apples appear because life is flowing through the tree.
Now imagine a dead tree with perfect plastic apples tied to every branch.
From a distance, it may look impressive.
But the fruit didn’t grow there.
It was attached there.
Can religion decorate a spiritually exhausted person with enough plastic fruit to convince everyone, including themselves, that real life is growing underneath?
That’s what law-driven obedience can look like.
A person may talk frequently about witnessing, praying, serving, studying, and everything they’re doing for God.
None of that is wrong. But sometimes you can feel the pressure behind it.
It can sound less like celebrating Christ and more like presenting evidence to others, to themselves, and perhaps to God.
I’ve watched sincere Christians become increasingly driven to mention how much they pray, how often they share their faith, and how deeply they study.
The issue isn’t the activity.
The issue is the source.
Is this Christ’s life naturally being expressed?
Or has spiritual activity become a way of saying, “Look, I really do belong to Him”?
When someone constantly points to their prayers, Bible knowledge, witnessing, and service, are they celebrating grace, or trying to convince themselves they’re really saved?
How much prayer proves you belong to Christ?
How many people must you witness to?
How consistent must your obedience be before you’re secure?
No one can answer that.
When your assurance rests on your behavior instead of Jesus, you’ll always wonder whether you’ve prayed enough, served enough, or produced enough fruit to prove you belong.
We say salvation is free.
But when someone asks, “How do I know I really belong to Christ?” the answer quietly becomes, “Examine your fruit. Measure your works.”
That’s Christian Double-Talk.
You can call it fruit, evidence, perseverance, or proof. But when assurance rests on what you produce, your attention moves away from Jesus and back onto you.
The gospel tells you to look to Christ.
His death, resurrection, and promise are your assurance.
If your assurance depends on the quality of your fruit, is Jesus really the foundation, or has your performance become the final proof holding everything together?
Good works follow salvation.
They don’t complete it.
Ephesians 2 tells us we’re saved by grace through faith, not by works, and then says we’re created in Christ Jesus for good works.
That order matters.
Good works don’t create the new person.
The new person produces good works.
Jesus said in John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.”
He didn’t tell branches to inspect themselves all day.
He pointed them to the vine.
The branch lives because of its union with the vine.
That’s you in Christ.
Does a branch bear fruit so it can become connected to the vine, or because it is already connected, and what happens when Christianity reverses that order?
Get that order backward, and the Christian life becomes one long audition.
Acceptance comes before transformation.
Identity comes before behavior.
Life comes before fruit.
Obedience under grace isn’t you trying to prove something to Jesus.
It’s the life of Jesus being expressed through you.
Fear can control behavior temporarily. It can make someone hide failure and pretend.
But fear cannot produce love.
Grace can.
Titus 2 says it’s, “… the grace of God” … that “teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions.”
What actually teaches us to say no to sin? Is it condemnation, threats, insecurity, fear that one bad week proves we were never saved … or grace alone?
Grace shows you who God is, what Jesus accomplished, and who you are.
Grace teaches you that sin doesn’t fit you anymore.
You’re not merely a forgiven sinner trying to resist your deepest identity.
You’re a new creation.
You may still choose sin and hurt yourself or others. But sin is no longer your identity, master, or home.
Under performance Christianity, you sin, feel distant from God, assume He’s angry, ask Him to forgive you, promise to improve, and begin working your way back into the closeness you think you lost.
But the New Covenant isn’t a revolving door where believers move in and out of God’s favor.
Hebrews 10:14 says, “For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.”
Perfect forever.
Not perfect until your next failure.
Forever.
If Jesus forgave all our sins at the cross, why do we treat every new failure like a fresh debt His blood has not yet covered?
When you sin, be honest.
Recognize the damage.
Apologize and change direction when needed.
But don’t treat Jesus’ blood as though it expired.
You aren’t confessing to purchase forgiveness again.
You’re bringing your behavior back into agreement with who you already are.
You don’t repent so God will accept you again.
You change your mind because you are accepted.
We say nothing can separate us from God’s love, but then teach that one bad choice breaks fellowship.
We say there’s no condemnation in Christ, but use condemnation to motivate obedience.
That’s Old Covenant pressure dressed in New Covenant language.
But can a believer’s sin cause real damage and real consequences without breaking their union with Christ?
Your union is secure because Jesus secured it.
Your behavior matters deeply, but it doesn’t rewrite what Jesus accomplished.
When I was 16 and had just gotten my driver’s license, my parents let me use the family car to take Dianne on a date.
It was a brand-new 1970 Plymouth Fury, light metallic green with a black vinyl top.
Remember those?
I backed out into the cul-de-sac, made a huge arch while waving to my mom on the front porch, and right in the middle of my wave, bam.
I backed straight into a telephone pole.
There was damage to repair.
There was a conversation.
There was an apology.
But the accident didn’t cancel our relationship.
I didn’t replace the bumper to become part of the family again.
When you fail, do you repair your behavior so you can become God’s child again, or face what happened as someone who already belongs to Him?
That’s the difference grace makes.
Grace doesn’t excuse destructive choices.
It allows you to face them without threatening your identity.
So do Christians still have commands?
Yes.
But Jesus’ commands aren’t a new version of the Mosaic law that believers must keep to stay forgiven or prove their faith is real.
Jesus said in John 13:34, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
Notice the order.
“As I have loved you.”
His love comes first.
You receive before you give.
You’re loved, so you love.
Jesus didn't say, "Love people so you can earn My love." He said, "Love one another as I have loved you." One starts with acceptance. The other tries to earn it. Which one sounds like the New Covenant?
It begins with something Jesus has already done.
Obedience can mean listening instead of preparing your comeback, apologizing without defending yourself, or serving without needing anyone to know.
It can mean praying or sharing your faith because you care, not because you’re trying to prove a real Christian would do it.
The action may look the same from the outside, but the heart can be completely different.
Law says, “Improve your behavior, and maybe you’ll know you belong.”
Grace says, “You already belong to Me. Now let Me teach you how to walk.”
Law and grace can both change what you do, but which one can actually change you from the inside out?
This is why identity matters.
When you know you’re forgiven, righteous, a new creation, sealed, and complete in Christ, you stop using obedience to build an identity you’ve already received.
That’s why we created the Salvation Reality List.
It’s a simple list of what became true when you trusted Jesus.
Forgiven.
Righteous.
A new creation.
Sealed.
Complete in Christ.

Let those truths replace the messages that keep you performing and wondering whether you’ve done enough.
You don’t become righteous through better obedience.
You learn obedience because Christ has already made you righteous.
You don’t produce fruit to prove you’re alive.
Fruit grows because Christ’s life is already within you.
That doesn’t make every choice easy.
It means you face every struggle from acceptance instead of fighting for acceptance.
You can admit you were wrong without believing you’ve become wrong with God, and grow without turning growth into a test of whether you belong.
What if obedience isn’t the price of God’s presence?
What if it’s the result of God’s presence?
God didn’t save you and leave you alone.
He gave you His Spirit and made you His home.
When the Spirit nudges you toward honesty, respond. When kindness pulls you away from harshness, trust that. When something destructive no longer fits who you are, walk away.
Not because you fear God will reject you, but because you’re learning what freedom feels like.
Obedience under grace isn’t passive.
It’s responsive.
It isn’t doing nothing.
It’s trusting Someone.
And when you stumble, you don’t run from God.
You remember He’s already with you.
You don’t beg for a restored relationship.
You stand in the relationship Jesus already restored.
You let grace train you, correct you, and remind you who you are.
That’s obedience under grace.

Now for my final thoughts.
Maybe you’ve been measuring your prayer life, Bible knowledge, service, or how often you talk about Jesus.
Maybe you’ve needed others to know, not from pride, but because somewhere inside you need reassurance that you belong.
But your assurance was never meant to rest on the amount of fruit you can display.
Your assurance rests in Jesus.
You’re not standing outside God’s family submitting evidence to get in.
You’re already home.
You’re not a dead tree decorated with plastic fruit.
You’re a living branch connected to the vine.
Stop trying to manufacture what only Christ can produce.
Rest in Him.
Trust the Spirit within you.
Let grace train you.
Let fruit grow naturally, quietly, and honestly.
You don’t need to announce every piece of fruit to prove the tree is alive.
The life is already there.
