Ray Dalio is the founder of Bridgewater Associates, one of the most successful hedge funds in history, and the author of Principles, a best-selling manifesto on decision-making, radical transparency, and building scalable systems. The book distills decades of hard-earned lessons into timeless frameworks that have shaped not only investment strategy but also how high-performance teams think, operate, and grow.
It wasn’t always this way. In fact, far from it.
It was 1982.
Ray Dalio walked into Bridgewater’s tiny office, just a few people and a few desks, and told his team he was wrong. About everything.
He had just appeared on national television, predicting that the U.S. economy was headed for a depression. Instead, the market boomed.
The result?
Bridgewater lost clients. Revenue vanished. Ray had to borrow $4,000 from his dad to help pay the bills. He laid off every employee… including himself.
He went from calling shots on Wall Street to working from home alone, feeling humiliated and hollowed out.
“I was so broke I couldn’t even afford to take my family out to dinner.” -Ray Dalio
He had built his company on the belief that logic, analysis, and conviction were enough. And yet his conviction had nearly destroyed him.
And so, in that moment of complete failure, Ray asked the question we all eventually face:
What needs to change? His answer?
“I needed to focus. Fewer things, better.” “I need to gain leverage.”
