Welcome to Woman in the Word, the podcast where we dive into scripture, ask real questions, and walk through the Bible together, one honest conversation at a time. I'm Felicia Parker, I'm your host, and I'm so glad you're here. So whether you're new to the Word or you've been studying for years, there's a seat at the table for all of us. So grab your coffee, open your journal, or put on your walking shoes, and let's get into it. Hey, welcome to the Woman in the Word podcast. I am so excited that you are joining me as always. I'm looking forward to this one. This was a question that God asked me, and it kind of shook me a little bit. And the question was, who's your God? And I thought, well, you are Lord, of course, right? And um the response he gave me back was really interesting, and I wanted to share it with you. So let's jump into it. Hey, so I'm so excited about this conversation today. Who's your God? And before we jump into it, can I just say any parents out there that still have children in the house, especially elementary or middle school age, um, it's it's just hilarious. And so I hope you can uh hear the humor in this. So my kids, they have two big days that they look forward to their birthday and Christmas. If you're a parent, you know what I'm talking about. So my children's birthdays have passed. So we're in the month of August. School has barely started. We just finished getting school supply, and they said, Hey mommy, I know what I want for Christmas. Do you? Because my mind has not gotten to the place of even preparing for Christmas shopping, let alone ready to receive the list. So, y'all, I just want to say shout out to all the parents. Um, because being a parent to me is comedy, it is um the work of the Lord, and it takes the strength of the Lord to do it. So, anyway, I just hope that uh brought a little humor and put a smile on your face today because I know it did me when my children start talking about that a week into um back to school. So, anyway, back to school to all your little people, and they're probably preparing for Christmas as well. Um, but today we are talking about who's your God. And when God asked me this, of course I said, Lord, you're my God. Like, hands down, no question asked. And he said, Felicia, whoever controls you is your God. And I sat back and I said, Well, well, you do. And he said, Are you sure? And then he pointed out certain scenarios. He said, When that specific individual walks in the room, your countenance changes, your light dims a little bit, your voice um dims a little bit, your your faith walk, you feel like you have to dumb it down or water it down because of this individual or this scenario you find yourself in. And he said, Whoever controls you is your God. And I don't know about you, but that really hit me hard because when he brought those things back to my remembrance, I was like, oh man, Lord, you're right. When that person does, you know, walk into the room, or when I am put in this position, or I find myself in this space, I do find myself drawing back maybe at times, or allowing my light to dim a little bit, or closing my mouth and not like scripture says, declaring the word of the Lord all the time because it's as if you know you don't want to deal with the ridicule or the pushback or oh, here you go being preachy preachy. You know what I mean? So it's like you kind of just fall back. And he said, whoever controls you is your God. And I want that to just resonate with you for a moment, and I want you to think about that. Whatever controls you is your God. So whether that be a person that can step into the room and your countenance change, or it can be your money can get to a certain point and your heart begins to beat fast, or it could be the titles behind your name. If you were to ever lose that position that you hold, you don't know who you would be. Whatever thing that controls you, that moves you, that makes you do the things you do, say the things you say, that is your God. Hey, I just wanted to take a quick pause in our conversation and introduce you to uh the lover of your soul if you have yet to meet him. I would love to lead you in the prayer of salvation. So if you'd repeat after me, that would be awesome. Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and I'm in need of a savior. I confess that Jesus is Lord and I want him to be the Lord of my life. I believe that you raised him from the dead to rule and reign for all of eternity. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with the precious blood of Jesus. I thank you, Lord, for dying on the cross just for me. In Jesus' name, amen. Hey, if you just prayed that prayer, I want to welcome you to the family of God and just say congratulations. We find in Deuteronomy chapter 10, verse 12, I'm gonna read it. It says, And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the Lord your God, live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul. And y'all, so we find in the book of Deuteronomy, he's telling the children of Israel, but he's also telling us today in 2026, this is what I desire from you if I am truly your God. I desire for you to do what I'm asking you to do, to fear me, to do the things that please me, to love me with your whole heart and with your soul. What he's saying is, hey, I need you to show it. Don't just talk it, but I need you to show it in the way that you live. I need to be the one that can regulate your attitude in a room where you want to lose it. I need to be the one that controls how you spend your money, even though you find your identity in it. I need to be the one that directs your steps to a state, to a house, to a job, to an individual to marry. I need to be the one that is the leading and the guiding uh light in your life, if I am truly your God. And for some of us, we may say, you know, he is our God. Absolutely. That's my God, you are my God. No questions asked. But if we were really to take the spotlight of heaven and shine it on our lives, we may see areas where he's actually not our God, where he's actually not in control of our financial decision making or our relational connections that we have or our uh vocation that we chose. Maybe something else is our God. And if it's not God that is our God, then we're in a really bad place because if we are not where God is, we're also not where his protection is, where his provision is, where his favor is, where his wisdom is, where his direction is, where his guidance is, where his comfort is, where his peace is. We're in a place where all of that is lacking if he is not our God.

If God is truly God over every area of our life, we should have evidence of it. We see in 1 Corinthians chapter 15, verse 58, it says, So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless. So there should be evidence if He is our God. Not only should there be a commitment that we love Him and that we serve Him, but there should also be evidence that flows from that. We should be working enthusiastically, not for ourselves, not for the accolades, not for the praise of man, but for the honor of one. And it says that we should work enthusiastically for the Lord. And we should also be strong and immovable. So when something else, another small G God, an idol pops up in our life and wants us to serve it, maybe it's money, maybe it's uh a title, maybe it's a position, maybe it's a friendship, maybe it's a connection, maybe it's you know, the house, the car, the whatever, the lifestyle. When that pops up, it says in scripture, be strong and immovable. Don't let those small g gods move you off the foundation of the truth of God's word, that he is the one true God, and that he is the one that is to be in control of your life. He is the one that we should serve, he is the one that we should love with our whole heart and our whole soul. He is the one that should get our time and our attention. He is the one that we're living for because I need you to understand scripture says nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless. But everything you do for a small g God will eventually burn up and it will result to not. It might look good today, it might feel good in the bank account today, it might sound good, you know, that ring off the the tongue of somebody when they tell you what your your new title is on the job or the promotion you got or the pat on the back or even the the love from your children, we can begin to idolize that, or the love from your husband, we can begin to idolize that. But I need you guys to understand that the one that we should be living for, that we should be working enthusiastically for, that we should be rooted and grounded in is Christ and Christ alone. He is our Lord, he is our savior, and he is the one that is desiring to be in control of our life. On September 19th, 2026, women will gather at the UNLV Student Union Ballroom for a powerful day of connection, encouragement, and renewal. The gathering, 2026. There's a seat waiting just for you. We see in 1 Samuel chapter 12, verse 24, it says, Be sure to fear the Lord and faithfully serve him. Think of all the wonderful things he has done for you. So it says, Hey, when when you want to fall off, think about the wonderful things he's done and get back to serving him faithfully and fear him, not a I'm scared of you fear. I love how John Brevere puts it. I'm afraid to be without him. I'm afraid to be far from him. I'm afraid to not be in his presence. I'm afraid to not please him and live for him. That's what I'm afraid of. I'm not scared of him as if he's a scary God. I'm afraid to be without him. I don't want my life lived without God there in every moment of every day. And when God said, Who's your God? I knew what he was talking about after he pointed out those scenarios. And I said, okay, if someone can get me to shrink back off of my light shining or declaring the word, what do I need to search in me that makes me feel like I need to do that? Because my God is worth it. He's worth me living for him, he's worth me faithfully serving him, he's worth me not being moved nor shaken. He's worth it. Because I have to remember the wonderful things he's done. And this is what I know. I don't know who said it, but whoever said it, I do want to give them credit for it. That there is no one on this earth that can put me in hell or put me in heaven but Christ. Meaning, if I do not choose him, I'm choosing to live apart from him for eternity. But if I choose him, he is the one that gives me the keys to the kingdom and says, Well done, when I finish this assignment here on earth. There is no one on this earth that has the power to do that. But yet I'm allowing someone to be my God in that moment because of the way they make me feel or the things that they've said or the scenario I find myself in. And I have to say, Felicia, oh, absolutely not. You will serve the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength in every moment of every day. And I don't know if you resonate with it at all, but maybe you find yourself bowing to an idol, even though God says, hey, we don't bow. Maybe you say, Yeah, but that paycheck, I really do need it. So I'm gonna, I'm gonna bow here. Or you know what? My my children, um, I ri I really want to be loved by my children, so I'm gonna bow to them as my idol. I'm gonna, and and anything that we say is an idol, it's anything that we just elevate above God that now becomes our God. It sits on the throne where only God is supposed to reside in our life. And that can be anything that we place there, but y'all understand whoever is your God controls you. So money will always tell you you don't have enough. Your children will always make you feel like you have to do more. And although we love them, they're amazing, don't get me wrong, but y'all, they're just as human as we are. And you can buy a toy today and they're pouting tomorrow about the yo-yo they don't have. And we're always striving to prove that we're a good parent or we're a good spouse or we're an effective coworker or we're a valuable employee. And I want you to understand anything that controls you outside of Christ will have you running for your life because you will always be trying to run to the next thing to appease that small g God, and you can't. Hey, I just wanted to take a quick break in our episode and share with you some really exciting news. This year we are hosting our first ever outreach experience. This is an expansion of the gathering, and it is hosting 12 to 20 year old young men and women. I'm really excited about it. The location will be UNLB Student Union Ballroom. It's gonna be a great time of word, worship, connection, free merch, free food, a great concert, and you don't want to miss it. And it is totally free. So all you have to do is jump on our website, purpose-promise.com. Click on the gathering, drop down, register, and we look forward to hosting you. All right, let's jump back into the episode. In Galatians 5, chapter 5, verse 1, it says, So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure you stay free and don't get tied up again in slavery to the law. Don't get tied up again into the way the world does things and the way they say we should walk, we should talk, we should live. Don't get caught up again in the idols, don't get caught up again in allowing the small gs of this world to control your life. It says that Christ has truly set you free. Now stay free. And the way we stay free is by allowing him to be the one that controls our life, by allowing him to sit on the throne of our heart, by allowing him to be the voice that speaks into our life in every situation, by allowing him to tell us how we should live. That's the way we stay free. He has made us free, but the question is, will you stay free or will you walk yourself right back into slavery because the money was good enough, or the relationship you desired finally showed up, or the house you wanted, yes, this is finally what I what I needed for my family, or maybe it's the connections, I'm finally in there and my business is blowing up. Whatever it is, I need you to understand, it is great in the beginning, but the enemy's goal is to trap you in the end. And anything that you allow to be your God, meaning that you take out of its rightful position and you put it in God's place, it will not serve you well long term. It will be temporary and you will find yourself back in slavery. Am I saying don't get the nice house? Am I saying don't allow God to connect you so that your business can grow and increase? Am I saying, hey, don't take the job? Am I saying don't pursue the thing? I'm not. What I'm saying is let it be the voice of God that tells you where to go, what to do, who to connect with, what job to take, where to live. That's what I'm saying. Because if we want to stay free, since he's set us free, he has to be the voice we lean into. He has to be our God and not just the God that saved me, but the God that is leading me day in and day out. I've heard it said like this that we are, I believe it was Pastor Tim Ross. He said, we are okay with Jesus being our savior. We struggle with him being our Lord. What does that mean? He saved me, he rescued me, yes, but I don't want him to be all up in my business. I don't want him to tell me what house to buy, what car to drive, what city I should live in, what friends I should have, how I should spend my money. I I don't want him all up in my business, but I thank you for saving me. And this is the thing, he is desiring to be both Lord and Savior. He saved you to set you free, but he also desires to be Lord so he could keep you free. And the only way we can stay free is if we allow him to be the God over our life in every situation that we face, in every nook and cranny of your life, turn the light on and say, You're Lord. You point out anything in this situation, in this scenario, in this friendship, in this mindset. You point out anything that's not like you and lead me down the path of everlasting life. Y'all, he's the one. He's the one that paid the price so that he can hold the title of Lord, so that he can hold the title of God, so that he can be the one that is leading and guiding our life. He needs to be the one in the driver's seat, having full control, and we need to be the one sleeping in the passenger seat saying, Hey, tell me what to do next. I'm gonna take a nap till we get there. That's how much we should be relying on Christ to lead us, to guide us, to control our life because he's our God. And y'all, if we want to enjoy the setting free and being able to stay free, we've got to trust him, we've got to rely on him, and we've got to give him back the keys of control to our life. Thanks for hanging out with me in the Word. I hope it encouraged your heart and gave you something to carry into the rest of the week. If it spoke to you, share this with someone who might need it too. And hey, don't forget to follow or to subscribe so you don't miss out on what's next. Until then, keep showing up, keep listening, and let his word lead the way.
