1 Nephi 16:10 - "And it came to pass that as my father arose in the morning, and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round ball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. And within the ball were two spindles; and the one pointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness."
President Thomas S. Monson - "Your patriarchal blessing is your passport to peace in this life. It is a Liahona of light to guide you unerringly to your heavenly home."
Elder David A. Bednar - “In our day the Book of Mormon is the primary source to which we should turn for help in learning how to invite the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. The description in the Book of Mormon of the Liahona, the director or compass used by Lehi and his family in their journey in the wilderness, specifically was included in the record as a type and a shadow for our day and as an essential lesson about what we should do to enjoy the blessings of the Holy Ghost.”

Welcome to Seek This Jesus, a daily podcast dedicated to drawing closer to the Savior through the powerful truths found in the Book of Mormon. Each episode, we focus on one verse that helps us walk more faithfully in his footsteps.
SPEAKER_01As Lehi's family begins a new phase of their journey, the Lord provides a remarkable gift, one that teaches us how God guides his people, especially when the path ahead is unfamiliar. The record preserves this moment not just as history, but as instruction for us today. Nephi sixteen ten reads And it came to pass that as my father arose in the morning and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round ball of curious workmanship, and it was of fine brass, and within the ball were two spindles, and the one pointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness. This moment marks a turning point in Lehi's journey. Up to this point the family had likely travelled through regions that were at least somewhat familiar. Now they are being led into places they had never traveled before. The Lord did not leave them to guess. He provided a divinely prepared instrument, the Lehona. Unlike a regular compass, the Liahona did not simply point north. It pointed where they were supposed to go. And unlike a mechanical tool, it did not work automatically. It worked according to faith and diligence. Direction was tied to obedience. Guidance was connected to spiritual effort. That alone teaches us something essential. God's guidance is personal. It is not generic. He does not simply tell us what is north. He shows us our way forward. But that guidance is not passive. It requires engagement, attention, humility, and a willingness to follow what is given. The Liahona reminds us that when God leads us somewhere unfamiliar, he also provides a way to know where to step next. A regular compass requires knowledge to use, and even then, it is imperfect. It points to magnetic north, not true north. The Liahona, by contrast, is exact. It pointed precisely where God wanted his people to go. Later in the Book of Mormon, we are taught plainly what the Liahona represents. It is a symbol of the word of Christ, the divine guidance God gives his children through revelation and scripture. The Lord does not expect us to navigate spiritual wilderness alone. He gives us his word as a reliable guide. The difference between a compass and the Liahona is important. A compass can tell us general direction, but the word of Christ gives us divine direction. It does not merely inform us, it transforms us. It does not just point us somewhere, it leads us home, our heavenly home. This helps us understand why the Liahona responded not to just waking up, it responded to faith and diligence. The Word of Christ does the same. Scripture study, prayer, and obedience are not about checking boxes. They are how we keep ourselves aligned with heaven's direction. When we engage them sincerely, the Lord shows us where to go next. President Spencer W. Kimball taught that the Liahona can be compared to our individual consciousness, or the light of Christ. That comparison is powerful. God has placed within each of us a divine capacity to recognize truth and feel direction toward what is right. But conscious alone is not enough. Like the Liahona, it must be heated, it must be trusted, and it must be reinforced. Through spiritual habits, when ignored, direction becomes unclear. When honored, guidance becomes steady. President Thomas S. Monson expanded this principle beautifully when he taught about another personal source of guidance. Listen in.
SPEAKER_03Your patriarchal blessing is your passport to peace in this life. It is a Liahona of light to guide you unerringly to your heavenly home.
SPEAKER_01Here again the Lord provides individualized direction. Just as the Liahona was given specifically to Lehi's family, our patriarchal blessings are tailored to each of us. God does not offer one size fits all guidance. He speaks in ways meant for us individually. Elder David A. Bednar taught that the Lord intentionally preserved the account of the Lehona because it applies directly to our day. Let's listen to him.
SPEAKER_02In our day, the Book of Mormon is the primary source to which we should turn for help in learning how to invite the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. The description in the Book of Mormon of the Lehona, the director or compass used by Lehi and his family in their journey in the wilderness, specifically was included in the record as a type and a shadow for our day, and as an essential lesson about what we should do to enjoy the blessings of the Holy Ghost.
SPEAKER_01This brings everything together. The Liahona teaches us how to invite the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. Guidance comes as we consistently turn to the Book of Mormon, live with faith and diligence, and respond to the direction we receive. In our lives, we also reach moments when familiar paths end. Decisions arise that we have never faced before. In those moments, the Lord does not expect us to rely on experience alone. He invites us to rely on Him. The same God who placed the Liahona at Lehi's tent door offers us spiritual direction today, clear, personal, and reliable if we are willing to seek it. So here is today's challenge. This week, let us treat the Word of Christ as our Liahona. As we read the Book of Mormon, let us specifically ask for direction, not just information. Let us pay attention to impressions, promptings, and quiet nudges, and then act on them with faith and diligence. As we do, we will find that the Lord still points the way, one step at a time toward our heavenly home. Thank you for listening to Seek This Jesus.
