Welcome to Seek This Jesus, a daily podcast dedicated to drawing closer to the Savior through the powerful truths found in the Book of Mormon. Each episode, we focus on one verse that helps us walk more faithfully in his footsteps. In the early chapters of Second Nephi, Nephi describes a period of intense tension and danger within his own family. Anger, resentment, and threats had grown so severe that his life was no longer safe. In that setting Nephi turned to the Lord in prayer. Here is the verse we will study today. Nephi chapter five verse five. And it came to pass that the Lord did warn me, that I Nephi, should depart from them and flee into the wilderness, and all those who would go with me. As we study this verse today, along with teachings from Elder Richard G. Scott, we will consider what it means to respond when the Lord answers our prayers by providing protection, direction, and a way forward, and how we can live with purpose in Jesus Christ. Nephi's decision to flee into the wilderness did not come out of nowhere. This warning from the Lord was connected to sincere prayer. Nephi had been pleading with God regarding the anger and hostility directed at him. The Lord did answer that prayer, but not in the way Nephi may have expected. Instead of changing the hearts of those who opposed him, the Lord changed Nephi's circumstances. This teaches us an important principle about revelation. The Lord always hears righteous prayers, but his answers are governed by wisdom, timing, and eternal perspective. Sometimes we hope the Lord will remove opposition, soften hearts, or resolve conflict in a way that allows things to stay the same. At other times the Lord answers by opening a door away from danger rather than fixing the danger itself. In Nephi's case, the Lord's answer was protective and decisive. He warned Nephi and provided a clear course of action. This reminds us that revelation is not only comforting, it can also be corrective and directive. When the Lord warns us, he does so because he sees what we cannot and knows outcomes we do not yet understand. Application is embedded in this principle. We learn that faithful discipleship includes trusting the Lord's answers, even when they disrupt our plans or expectations. When we seek guidance, we must be willing to follow it, even if it leads us in an unfamiliar direction. The Lord's goal is not convenience, but safety, growth, and long-term spiritual preservation. The Lord's instruction to Nephi was clear. He was to depart and flee. This was not a symbolic warning or a subtle nudge, it was a physical separation from the real and present danger. This teaches us that there are times when removing ourselves from harmful influences is not only appropriate, but required. Nephi's experience shows that spiritual safety sometimes requires distance. In his situation, remaining near those who sought his harm would have placed both his life and the Lord's work at risk. The command to flee was not an act of fear, but an act of faith and obedience. At the same time, this verse helps us recognize that not every situation allows for literal physical separation. While Nephi could flee into the wilderness, we often live, work, and interact in environments where full separation from wickedness is not possible. This reality invites us to consider how the Lord protects us when we cannot physically remove ourselves from harmful influences. The principle still applies. The Lord provides a way. Whether through physical distance or spiritual safeguards, God does not leave his people without protection. The key is recognizing when the Lord is calling us to step away, adjust boundaries, or change direction in order to preserve our faith and integrity. Application flows naturally here. We learn to prayerfully evaluate our environments, relationships, and influences. When the Lord prompts us to step back, disengage, or move forward without certain people or habits, those promptings are acts of mercy, not punishment. Obedience in these moments comes becomes a form of trust in the Lord's ability to lead us to safer ground. Elder Richard G. Scott taught clearly about how the Lord protects his children even when physical separation is not possible.

He said God has provided a way to live in this world and not be contaminated by the degrading pressure spread throughout it. You can live a virtuous, productive, righteous life by following the plan of protection created by your Father in heaven, his plan of happiness. It is contained in the scriptures and in the inspired declarations of his prophets. Avoid worldly wickedness. Know that God is in control. In time, Satan will completely fail and be punished for his perverse evil. God has a specific plan for your life. He'll reveal parts of that plan to you as you look for it with faith and consistent obedience. His son has made you free, not from the consequences of your acts, but free to make choices. God's eternal purpose is for you to be successful in this mortal life. No matter how wicked the world becomes, you can earn that blessing. Seek to be attentive to the personal guidance given to you through the Holy Spirit. Continue to be worthy to receive it. We talk to others who stumble and are perplexed, not certain of what path to follow.

Elder Scott's words expand Nephi's experience into a universal promise. Whether through physical escape or spiritual strength, God has a plan of protection for his children. That plan is rooted in Scripture, prophetic guidance, agency, and the constant influence of the Holy Spirit. This teaching reinforces that protection is not passive. It requires obedience, attentiveness, and consistent effort. As we live according to God's plan, we gain clarity, confidence, and resilience, even in environments where wickedness is present. Application here is direct. We are reminded that the Lord's protection often comes through daily choices. Scripture study, obedience, and responsiveness to the Spirit create a spiritual refuge that cannot be taken away by external conditions. Nephi's willingness to act on the Lord's warning shows us what faithful response looks like. He did not delay, debate, or rationalize the command. He trusted that the Lord's direction was an answer to prayer and a means of deliverance. For us today, the application lies in recognizing when the Lord is providing a way forward rather than a way to stay. Sometimes revelation invites patience and endurance. At other times it invites movement, change, and courageous obedience. Learning to discern the difference is part of spiritual maturity. When the Lord prompts us to adjust our path, step away from harmful influences, or move toward a new direction, that prompting is evidence of his awareness and care. Acting on it requires humility and trust. But it also brings peace and clarity. This verse invites us to reflect on how we respond to divine warnings and guidance. Are we willing to follow when the Lord's answer challenges our expectations? Are we attentive enough to recognize when protection comes in the form of change? So here is today's challenge. Identify one area of life where the Lord may be providing direction or protection through a prompting to adjust, step away or move forward. Prayerfully consider what action aligns with that guidance and choose to act in faith, trusting that the Lord's warnings and invitations are always rooted in love and eternal purpose.
