Beware the Flaxen Cord

Every disciple of Jesus Christ faces temptation. Rarely does Satan attempt to lead us away from God all at once. Instead he works patiently, subtly, making sin appear harmless. Compromise seems reasonable, and spiritual neglect feel insignificant. The danger is not usually in one dramatic decision, but in the many small choices that slowly reshape our hearts. The Lord repeatedly warns us because he wants us to recognize the adversary's pattern before it gains power over us. Nephi had seen the rise and fall of civilizations. Through revelation he witnessed the conditions of the last days and the methods Satan would continue to use. While speaking of secret combinations and works of darkness, Nephi shifted the focus beyond organizations or conspiracies and exposed the true source behind all evil. His warning is timeless because the devil still works the same way today. Nephi teaches in Second Nephi twenty six verse twenty two And there are also secret combinations, even as in times of old, according to the combination of the devil, for he is the founder of all these things, yea, the founder of murder and works of darkness, yea, and he leadeth them by the neck with a flaxen cord, until he bindeth them with his strong cords forever. As we study this verse today, along with teachings from President George Albert Smith, we will consider how Satan gradually seeks to bind us, and how remaining close to the Lord protects us from his influence. One of the most striking images in this verse is the flaxen cord. A cord made of flax is thin, light, and seemingly harmless. It hardly appears capable of restraining anyone. Yet Nephi says that Satan begins there. He does not usually start with strong change, he starts with something that feels small enough to ignore. That pattern is deliberate. One compromise leads to another, one rationalization makes the next one easier. A neglected prayer becomes a neglected scripture study. A casual attitude towards sin slowly weakens spiritual sensitivity. Little by little the flaxen cord becomes a stronger cord until a person discovers that what once seemed harmless now exercises real control. Nephi is teaching more than the dangers of obvious wickedness. He is exposing Satan's strategy. The adversary understands that gradual change often goes unnoticed. If he can convince us that a small step away from the Lord does not matter, he has already begun accomplishing his purposes. The comforting truth is that the Lord also works gradually. As we choose him day after day our faith grows, our discernment increases, and our spiritual strength becomes greater. Just as small compromises lead us away from God, small acts of faith draw us nearer to him. Nephi also reminds us who stands behind every work of darkness. He says the devil is the founder of all these things. Evil is never self created. Satan is always seeking to deceive, divide, and destroy, because those purposes are completely opposite to the work of Jesus Christ, who came to give life, truth, and liberty. President George Albert Smith gave this sobering warning All safety, all righteousness, all happiness are on the Lord's side of the line. But if you cross to the devil's side of that line one inch, you are in the tempter's power. And if he is successful, you will not be able to think or even reason properly because you have lost the spirit of the Lord. That statement helps us understand why Nephi speaks so strongly. Satan's greatest objective is not merely to tempt us into one wrong choice. His greater objective is to separate us from the influence of the Holy Ghost. Once the Spirit's influence is diminished, spiritual judgment becomes more difficult. Right and wrong become easier to confuse. Truth becomes less clear. What once seemed obvious begins to feel uncertain. That is why the Lord places such importance on staying spiritually close to him. The companionship of the Holy Ghost is one of our greatest protections against deception. As long as we remain on the Lord's side, we have divine help to recognize truth, reject temptation, and avoid the subtle traps that Satan carefully lays. Nephi's warning invites us to examine not only the major decisions in our lives, but also the seemingly insignificant ones. The flaxen cord is dangerous precisely because it appears so small. We may justify a habit because everyone else accepts it. We may excuse entertainment that slowly changes what we laugh at, admire, or tolerate. We may become less intentional in prayer or scripture study because life feels busy. None of those choices may seem dramatic in isolation, but Nephi reminds us that Satan thinks in terms of direction, not just individual decisions. The encouraging message is that we do not need to live in fear. We simply need to stay close to Jesus Christ. As we consistently pray, study the scriptures, worship, or take of the sacrament, and listen to the promptings of the Holy Ghost, we become more spiritually sensitive. The Spirit often warns us while temptations are still flax and cords, long before they become strong ones. This verse also teaches us to avoid becoming comfortable near the spiritual boundary. Rather than asking how close we can get to temptation without crossing the line, we can ask how closely we can walk with the Savior. That small shift changes everything. Our focus moves away from seeing what we can justify and toward becoming more like Jesus Christ. Every day presents countless small choices. Individually they may seem insignificant, but together they shape who we are becoming. As we repeatedly choose the Lord, we discover that the same principle of gradual growth works in our favor. Small acts of obedience become steadfast discipleship, and faithful habits become a life firmly anchored in Jesus Christ. So here's today's challenge. Today, take a few quiet minutes to ask the Lord to help us identify any flaxen cords that may be pulling us away from him. Then choose one small change that moves us closer to Christ. It may be setting aside distracting media, offering a more sincere prayer, spending additional time with the scriptures, or responding to a prompting from the Holy Ghost. Small choices made consistently in the Lord's direction lead to lasting spiritual strength. Thank you for listening to Seek This Jesus.
