If you’re looking for an advisor who’s just as genuine off-air as they are on, you’ll enjoy our chat with Martin. We talk about why honesty, consistency, and straight-talking advice matter far more than a polished sales pitch, especially when you’re making important decisions about wills, trusts, and LPAs. What you hear is exactly what you’d get sitting around a kitchen table, working through who gets what, when, and how best to protect the people you care about.

We also open up about how we work behind the scenes. Our weekly director meetings help keep communication honest, balanced, and constructive—something we often encourage families to adopt when planning their estates. It’s all about regular conversations, clear expectations, and tackling challenges early. Martin brings thoughtful insight, relatable stories, and refreshing honesty—and that’s exactly why this conversation works.

Banter And Show Kickoff

SPEAKER_02

Good morning, afternoon, and evening.

SPEAKER_01

Good morning.

SPEAKER_02

But you don't know when they listen to this.

SPEAKER_01

As soon as it drops. Which is 7 a.m. every Wednesday.

SPEAKER_02

Does the extra slice slice slice?

SPEAKER_00

Slice, slice, baby. Yeah. Every Wednesday. 7 a.m. 7 a.m. quality. Thanks.

unknown

Welcome.

SPEAKER_02

So Martin Hoskins.

SPEAKER_01

Martin Hoskins.

SPEAKER_02

Uncle Martin to you.

SPEAKER_01

My Uncle Martin.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Are you going to tell him why or not?

SPEAKER_01

No, just Uncle Martin.

SPEAKER_02

Uncle Martin.

SPEAKER_01

That is it.

SPEAKER_02

I don't think he knew you called him Uncle Martin, by the way.

SPEAKER_01

He does, because he when he texted me, he says it.

SPEAKER_02

No, because I I asked him the other day. He's in my message. A little while ago. I said, Oh yeah, do you want to call you Uncle Martin? She doesn't. She definitely does.

SPEAKER_01

I said it to him on the phone.

SPEAKER_02

Whatever.

SPEAKER_01

He's lying to you. Because I said one answer is phone calls.

SPEAKER_02

Maybe he thinks it's some other term. I don't know why.

SPEAKER_01

That's a whole different show.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Well, we've spoken about too much anyway. Right, anyway, so Martin.

SPEAKER_01

See, I knew most of Martin's story anyway. He's presenting at the breakfast.

Introducing Uncle Martin

SPEAKER_02

He's very good when he presents at telling his life story, isn't he?

SPEAKER_01

Yes, he is. Very good. I knew his passion for cut, I knew most of that.

SPEAKER_00

I knew his troubled upbringing, his struggles at school, his army. I I knew most of that bit. I didn't know about all the sales jobs he's had.

SPEAKER_01

I think I knew all of that.

SPEAKER_02

I already knew all the answers. Yeah, it is. Didn't really care.

SPEAKER_01

Aced that mate completed it.

SPEAKER_02

Nice. By the way, Martin, I was fascinated by what you had to say. Jam obviously couldn't care and just went, switch off. I know it.

SPEAKER_01

I literally just said there was parts of what I didn't know. You would you just pick out what you want to hear? If I was you ignore the wreck.

SPEAKER_02

If I was you, you know what your comeback should have been?

SPEAKER_01

What?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, great. Well at least I listened to his network presentations, which you obviously don't.

SPEAKER_01

Well you're never there anyways. I don't think you've been to his ones.

SPEAKER_02

I definitely have.

SPEAKER_00

Anyway, so Uncle Martin. How do you think he came across as a guest? Do you know what?

Martin’s Story And Expertise

SPEAKER_01

Really, really approachable in his field. I'd I would say if I listened to Martin and I needed a meeting with someone, LPAs, Wills, Trusts, I'd call on Martin.

SPEAKER_00

Who would be your second choice? I'd go to Google. I don't know anyone else. That's what I just thought.

SPEAKER_02

One out of one, right?

SPEAKER_01

One out of one. But there's other people that might know more people than me. I just keep it I'll keep it in my circle, Nick. I don't really care about it. I only stay with the people that know me, alright?

SPEAKER_00

Standard.

SPEAKER_01

But no, I think he c he's he's very caring. All our guests today have been very caring.

SPEAKER_02

True.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, actually we have genuine good people that just want to help.

SPEAKER_02

Although remember we don't know the order this is gonna go out on yet.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but today, it doesn't matter who Yeah, but you don't know who the two others were.

SPEAKER_02

I know who offsin today. There could be someone who we're gonna do like talk to next month.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, but I know who often today, so I know what I mean.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Martin's one of them anyway, let's get back to mine.

SPEAKER_02

But yes, I think I think there have been there have been some amazing yesterday. Really, really, really good and it's almost like it's been caring day today. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah, you've been well out of place.

SPEAKER_02

But my co no, he's he's j genuinely a good a good can't even switch off yet because it's still we're still below the minimum amount of time I have to talk.

SPEAKER_01

Give up what's your rating for mine? What's your rating as me as a co-host?

SPEAKER_02

A one today, something like that, maybe one and a half.

SPEAKER_01

One and a half.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but it's yeah, but it's yeah, but it's up but it's up one to one and a half points of where you were last time.

SPEAKER_00

Would you give yourself?

SPEAKER_02

About today I think I've been about a eight.

SPEAKER_00

You'd give me a one and a half, you'd give yourself an eight.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you're welcome.

SPEAKER_01

Oh I'm gonna use that bit and put it out and see what people think. You should do. I will. I'll get people to rate.

SPEAKER_02

Hashtag agree with nick.

SPEAKER_01

Who's the eight? Who's the one point five?

SPEAKER_02

Hashtag agree with nick.

SPEAKER_01

Hashtag Gemra all the way.

SPEAKER_02

Of course you'll get people going, uh International Women's Day, let's back Gem.

SPEAKER_01

I don't want all no, I want all the men's votes.

SPEAKER_02

Guess what?

SPEAKER_01

See, that just sounds even worse. However, whichever way I say it.

SPEAKER_02

Doesn't matter. Okay, right, so Martin I would like to say that Martin I think has been a guest that has excelled at one in one particular area better than pretty much anyone else I've seen.

SPEAKER_01

In what area is that?

SPEAKER_02

How he comes across on a podcast is exactly the same as I know him.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

He makes the best representation of himself. There's people who are a bit nervous. There's people who agree with stuff even if they don't agree just because, well, I don't want to be like abrasive or whatever. Martin is one of those people that literally has just called it exactly as he sees it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And he comes across how he appears on that. He's like that in everyday life, yeah. If you turn around and say, actually, I've heard him on the podcast and I don't like him, don't call him. Yeah, he's not for he's not for you. He's not for you.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But if you hear someone and you go, Well, yeah, obviously he's gonna be like that because he's making a bit of an effort. No, no, no, that's just Martin.

SPEAKER_01

That's Martin, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And I think he's done that better than any other guest we've had.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And Martin's known in general, even when you go out networking. I've never heard a bad word about Martin.

SPEAKER_02

I'm gonna start spreading one. I don't know what I'm gonna do, but it's gonna be something about being an uncle. Why would you do that? Uh something to do. When if you go, no one has ever, ever, ever, ever. So when Cambridge Analytica did their stuff on behavioral targeting, they found out that if you only ever say positive things about someone, people will no longer believe the positives you say about them. Because they think that it must be like fake news and it's being rigged. Because you don't it's like if you review something, if you have 10,000 reviews and they're all reviewing five five stars exactly. You know it's fake. Oh yeah. You know it's absolutely fake. Because because you go, well, hang on a second. What no one has ever said a bad word?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, someone's paid for them.

SPEAKER_02

Obviously, you're either paying for them or you're just deleting the bad ones.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah, so somebody, you know. This is why I don't win anything. And so you look at five five out of five.

SPEAKER_01

Look at TripAvisor.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Well, I I look I like to look at TripAdvisor, but un as a general overview. So I look at TripAdvisor as a general overview and go, it's 4.6. Seven people have given it one star, and seven thousand have given it five stars.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

Caring Guests And Lineup Talk

SPEAKER_02

And then I'd like to And if you look at the pictures. Do you know? I I hate to say this is going to sound so classist, but I tend to read a couple of the one stars and see whether or not they're like sharing the brain cell that week. I mean, I I mean I remember saw one and and it literally was talking about, yeah, yeah, so like I give this one star because somebody climbed up our balcony and banged on the patio door drunk one night. And you go Okay, because that's the hotel's and then we ran front rang front desk, and within five minutes they had someone up to our room, but the guy had gone. Unacceptable. It disturbed our night and spoiled our entire holiday. And I'm like, shut up, and it's not the hotel's fault. Don't be an idiot.

SPEAKER_01

When we went to Mauritius, all five star on our hotels, but there was one that had marked it down to like a two-star. I was reading for Because you were there. Yeah. Uh there was a spider in the room.

SPEAKER_02

Oh.

SPEAKER_01

Because that's the hotel's fault, wasn't it?

SPEAKER_02

Obviously.

SPEAKER_01

Can you make sure there's no spiders enter my room for the whole two?

SPEAKER_02

Or in Mauritius.

SPEAKER_01

Can you make it?

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So I think you have to take them with a pinch of top, which is why I think someone has to say something bad about mine. Just because otherwise I don't want anyone to think he's just he's he must be fake.

SPEAKER_01

Can a bad thing be someone's too nice? Is that a bad comment?

SPEAKER_02

That would be the only bad comment you would make about someone. That sounds like 101 bad comments that Jem can make. Oh, I think they're just too nice. Or like the stuff you have to put in like a job interview.

SPEAKER_01

You act like you've never seen me angry at any point.

SPEAKER_02

Well, you're not. When you go to when you go to a job interview and they go, Oh, you know, what what's your negative qualities? Oh, sometimes I just care too much. Sometimes I try too hard and work too hard.

SPEAKER_01

I can be a bitch. If you want to see my bitch side, I'll be a bit for a week. Can you really for a week? No, I'll probably last a day and maybe an hour.

SPEAKER_02

So we've gone from a week a week, a week, a day, an hour.

SPEAKER_01

I could do it for an hour.

SPEAKER_02

You couldn't.

SPEAKER_01

Half an hour I can.

unknown

I can.

SPEAKER_01

Half an hour I can. You definitely couldn't. Ask Eric how if I can be a bitch.

SPEAKER_02

Saying that you can, but you can't be in the you can't be around me.

SPEAKER_01

Why?

SPEAKER_02

So I've so I've said stuff to you before that I know has peed you off.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, see, you see me pissed off.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, but then you just leave. So I'm like So I'm like, okay, that's fine. So I don't know whether or not you're peed off. It depends. Sometimes I want to throw stuff.

SPEAKER_01

You should next time. Then you'll really seem angry when I throw it back.

unknown

You wouldn't.

SPEAKER_01

Why would I not?

SPEAKER_02

Because once you I'd never throw anything at me.

SPEAKER_01

I don't want you to throw your mug at me like you have before. Throw it back.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I have been tempted to smash a mug before.

SPEAKER_01

Because of me? Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But I would throw it into a wall. I would never I'd never ever. Would you do it while I was in the room to show me how angry you were?

SPEAKER_01

So once I leave, you'd throw the mug. Yes. Have you done that? No. Have you thrown a pen?

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_01

Have you gone like right, I'm screwing my fist up now. Have you dr have you done that behind my back?

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_01

Have you stuck your finger up when I've left the room?

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_01

That's a lie.

SPEAKER_02

But internally, I could have said things like, go, you can go F yourself.

SPEAKER_00

Have you said that about me?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you know, or I felt like I want to pick up a mug and launch it. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Wow. Maybe we should do this each week. We should open up to each other about how pissed off we've made each other.

SPEAKER_02

No, because I think I think that if you overshare, it creates problems.

SPEAKER_01

True.

SPEAKER_02

Because I think that if I told you every single week, by the way, at least every single week. No, no, you said we should do this every week. We should have this like common.

SPEAKER_01

I don't get an audio every single time.

SPEAKER_02

No, but that's what I'm saying. If every week, if, by the way, hypothetically, every week I said, You really pissed me off this week, you really pissed me off this week, you really pissed me off this week, it would only work for about three, four weeks until you go, Oh, if I piss you off that much, then may as well just not do this anymore. And that would be the end of it. She said, I did my best gem voices up.

SPEAKER_01

That sounds like something I'd say.

Authenticity On The Mic

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. But but you just but that's the thing, you can't you can't overshare negativity, you have to create the balance. So I think to you know, that's why it's good to have our directors' meetings that by the way it's got nothing to do with mine, but I don't care. This is just we'll just carry on down this tangent. But you know, we have directors' meetings every once a week. Yeah. And it's a great chance to go, let's go and look at some KPIs and do some stuff that people would never imagine us to do because they think we just wing everything.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But we then also have like an open forum to go, yeah. Do you know what? I think that was a major win for us. I think that was a major win for us. And actually that really pissed me off. Yeah, it works really well. Because it just allows everyone to go, nothing gets bottled up. You can vent, you can talk about it, safe space, say what you need to say, move. Start the week fresh. Yeah. And the off goes the week. Anyway, so yeah, Martin, score. I scored the last one oh shit, second.

SPEAKER_01

Ten.

SPEAKER_02

You're scoring Martin ten. The perfect guest. He can't be the perfect guest.

SPEAKER_00

I don't I don't know what makes the perfect guest.

SPEAKER_02

Well unfortunately not Martin.

SPEAKER_00

Alright. Nine point seven.

SPEAKER_02

See, I'm gonna go safer better than this. I'm not getting involved in these points. Nine.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, you don't want to do the point, okay.

SPEAKER_02

No, because again, if you give them point something, the person with nine point six now feels pissed off that Martin got nine point seven. And if someone got nine point eight, Martin now feels pissed off.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, but you're doing a nine, so the person who gets an eight is gonna feel it doesn't matter what way you are with.

SPEAKER_02

If the person being an eight doesn't like it, be better. Guess what? Look, we've had Gary in today. He told he taught you that same thing. Yeah. You know, if you wanna don't if you don't like losing, be better. Don't lose.

SPEAKER_01

Come correct.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Turn up to the podcast with seven great analogies, fun stories, great stories, and rhetorical questions of stuff you want to go through. Amazing.

SPEAKER_01

And just take the mic and do and host yourself.

SPEAKER_02

Imagine if they sang like Freddie Mercury, meets Adele.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

That's a 10 guest.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And bring chocolate.

SPEAKER_02

Bring us gifts.

SPEAKER_01

Bring us gifts.

SPEAKER_02

This is the thing. See, now you're working out all the stuff that could go, yeah, it makes a better guest. So if you go Martin's a 10, and I go, okay, so what happens if someone was as good as Martin and brought us gifts? You've got nowhere to go.

SPEAKER_01

Of course, I'd say 11, wouldn't I? Well, well, just 12.

SPEAKER_02

And then if you give someone 12, Martin would go, won't you give me 12 points? You didn't bring me chocolates points. Won't you stop at 10?

SPEAKER_01

You didn't sing.

SPEAKER_02

So don't give them 10 points.

SPEAKER_01

I didn't. I gave him 9.7.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Okay, so if he sang 9.8, if he brought you chocolates 9.9. Yes. And if he told me to do one, 10?

SPEAKER_01

No, still not 10.

SPEAKER_00

I know, right?

SPEAKER_02

What's he have to do for 10? Send you pictures like the ones that went to Denise.

SPEAKER_00

No way.

SPEAKER_02

That's just taking a whole new tangent, right?

SPEAKER_01

Taking a whole new tangent.

Reputation And Review Bias

SPEAKER_02

But now at least everyone has to follow all the episodes to understand what the hell we're talking about. Yeah, there we go. Right, okay. Martin, fantastic guest. Amazing. Anyone looking for anything that Martin does, definitely reach out to him because he is. Yeah, you'd have to sell for him. I'm just saying he's good. I think the mic cut out for that one. But anyway, there you go. Do without you just bleep yourself. Right, anyway, thanks everyone for listening. Thank you for us waffling on and stuff and subscribing and stuff. And please tell us if you've got guests that you'd like to see, tell us who they are.

SPEAKER_01

And why.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And why.

SPEAKER_01

I'd like to know why.

SPEAKER_02

Yes. That would be amazing. And like and subscribe and share and comment.

SPEAKER_01

Like, like, like, like, like.

SPEAKER_02

And like again. Yeah. Cheers. And I hope you enjoy our shorts.

SPEAKER_01

Always.

SPEAKER_02

Not the ones we wear the Did you like your shorts?

SPEAKER_01

The ones you were on the beach.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's it. Amazing. Everyone, thanks very much. Cheers.
