In this episode Caitlin and Logan chat through show extras and traditions that we have that just make sense. We couldn't imagine show day without any of these things and we hope you guys love them as much as we do ❤️

SPEAKER_01

Hi guys, welcome back to the Dance Inc. Diaries. It's Caitlin here today with Hello Games.

SPEAKER_00

It's been a while since we've been on the pods. Can't remember the last time or what we last spoke about, but it has been it's been a good while. It's been a good while. We've got an absolute doozy for you today.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, we've actually been sat here like laughing about it already. So apologies if we can't get rewards out because we're laughing so much, but hopefully some of you that have have been here for even just a year or a few years now, like you'll remember some of the stuff that we're going to talk about and you can you can laugh along with us. But yeah, today we're going to chat about things that we have at the show that just make sense. Yeah. They might be a little bit extra, but we're big believers in all the details, just bring it all together to be. It's not a show, it's an experience.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly.

SPEAKER_01

It's a memory. Like for me, like, see, if we didn't have dance massive letters at the back of the stage, it's not a show.

SPEAKER_00

It's not a show.

SPEAKER_01

It's not a show.

SPEAKER_00

Imagine people didn't fall into them. Not a show. No, I know I feel that's the amount of it's Louise holding them up that one year as well.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah, guys, this is a proper behind-the-scenes clap, right? One at a time. I actually think it might have been Amelie that had it that it was. It was Amelie kicked one of the letters and Louise sprinted, right? And she's holding it but she had to sit for like three daddy. Yeah, until the curtain shame. She just holds the back of the letter. Obviously, you can see her from the audience, but she just had to hold the letter so that it wouldn't fall backward into the curtain behind it. Oh too funny.

SPEAKER_00

It's even even you just saying there, like these all these little things, not little things, but all these extra things come together. But how like we've been sitting for the past 15 minutes laughing and having this about these memories. So obviously, like it does that, it heightens the experience. And I feel like you speak more about these extras than like oh, they perfected every single move in their dance.

SPEAKER_01

Like that's that's not what it's about.

SPEAKER_00

It's not what it's about.

SPEAKER_01

It's the exact same as coming to class. Like, we speak so often about like actually the dance classes about the confidence, about the friendships, and it's not really about how amazing dancers are, yeah, that's important, and it's the same with the show. Like, the point is that everyone's coming, they're having fun, they're having a good time, they're creating the memories, and it's all these like random things that that that helped together. Like, would the show have run last year if Amy didn't go into McDonald's and go, Can I please have 30 Happy Meal boxes, please?

SPEAKER_00

She's turned up like also guys, I've got these.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and that's a that's a thing. Apparently, the McDonald's do. So they just give them out. Well, obviously. They obviously do. Amy Switzerland says, I'm doing a dance show, can I have these boxes? And they were like, Yeah, cool. So actually, the the Happy Meal boxes that you saw on stage last year, guys, are legit McDonald's ones. Real McDonald's ones.

SPEAKER_00

The massive one wasn't. The massive one was not.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, well, we're on the crazy prop things.

SPEAKER_00

Francis Francis the Prop quote. Oh my goodness, like I don't think there's ever been like a like not Easter, like a spring where my living room hasn't been covered in cardboard and things getting made. I think the not the worst one, but in terms of like taking up the most room in the house was the cards. Oh my goodness. I have never seen a woman like she would come home from work and she would start work again. She would be like, Yep, no, this is it. But she she took it so extra. Like, she she's perfect for doing props because we'll ask her to do something that's maybe a bit out there, and she would take it a step further. Uh-huh. Like, so last year, obviously, if you weren't here last year, we had the boys dance to Life is a Highway, and during the dance, we got them all to put on these like cardboard cars that you could like step in and look at driving them. Exactly. But then she's actually like, I'm gonna print off dancing registration plates and um I'm gonna put lights on them. I was like, right.

SPEAKER_01

And they were all measured to each of the boys as well. Like Francis came in one in one in Saturdays, and it's like different like sizes of cardboard and all of that to be like. I need this many of this, this many of this. But what I love about Francis is like we're a bit like, oh well, just just try it, like just hear us out, we're just gonna do that. Like, yep, cool, we'll go for it. Like when I went to her and I went, I want 16 cars that the boys can dance in. And normally a normal person would have gone, Are you joking, Frances Vent? Celeste.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I'll get you. I think her my mum just looks forward to the rehearsal as well because she likes watching things so that she can suggest. And I'm like, right, sometimes you give yourself too much work, but she loves stuff like that. She's like, What for what this one we have to do?

SPEAKER_01

Wait till you see what we've got this year, guys. No, I know. But there had been some crazy stuff in the past.

SPEAKER_00

The giraffe, the life size aladdin.

SPEAKER_01

The genie. The genie was also terrifying actually.

SPEAKER_00

No, it's so scary. And then talking of memories, see that like blue morph suit that was on the genie. That then remained in my house, and I remember my mum, my mum, when Dancing ran this conversation of like, show us your mouse in the house. My mum made me take a video of her fitting that morph suit. So that's practicing like. Oh, you're a queen, you're a queen. But honestly, like the the giraffe was crazy. That was like it was a life, like massive giraffe in the house. Um there's been stuff that hasn't fit in the car, and she's like, Oh, I'm gonna have to put it back together.

SPEAKER_01

There's stuff that we've had to like walk down from your house to put in a van, haven't we? Because it's not anyone's not been in a few years. Or do you like multiple trips to get it?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, oh.

SPEAKER_01

My my favourite one was last year when we had like we have a van that comes to the studio on the Friday, picks up everything to take it to because there's no chance we could fit all the costrooms over cars and they get a Robert shout out to Robert. Then he turned up and he was like, What is going on? I even went, I thought it was a dance show. It says it is. It is, it is, but it's an example. It's a full production. It is full production. There's no taking it lightly right here.

SPEAKER_00

No. I think immediately from the minute we get our show songs, it's immediately thinking, What prop can we add to this? What can we add to this to give it that little How can we elevate it? Literally that little oomph.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Even down to like the backdrops and that, like they're properly thought out. Yeah. Properly thought out. Like there's the year dance like your daddy. Oh I did dance like your daddy. That must have been like three years ago or something. We'll still have that video somewhere, by the way. We should find it, get it. We should. Um I did it with the P12s, and for the backdrop, I was like, I would like everyone to do a little, literally like 10-15 seconds with your dad, your brother, your uncle, your grandpa, like whoever the videos that got sent in.

SPEAKER_00

Howling. I mean, there was some dads we did have to like say face to face, you've not sent it yet. Like, come on. Yeah, but good sports, I think. No, I know. And they did so well. Like, I remember it was um uh Stupa. Oh, yes. That's the only that's the only thing I know, my Stupa.

SPEAKER_01

Um that stuck. Was it Eva when it's a sort of stuff?

SPEAKER_00

Was it Eva that said that Stupot and it stuck? Stoop pot, and that's it. Like it takes that's what it takes. Kids say something once and we're like amazing. That's that's it for life.

SPEAKER_01

Do you want that the that's one thing I really love about this job is that kids can say the wildest things. Yeah, like guys, see if you tell your kids anything, 100%.

SPEAKER_00

We'll know about it. We'll know. We know about it's so funny. Like they will yeah, but I love I love when kids like treat like minor things as gossip as well. Yeah, like so actually at school today, this girl played with me in the wager. I'm like, no way, it's crazy. Oh, they're so good. But like other things I think as well have been we've had like characters taught, like obviously we had the genie, which was not a real character, but we've had some characters like come before and be part of the dance, the dances have been cut about backstage. Yeah, we've got some this year. I'm not gonna tell you who it is, though. You're just gonna have to buy tickets, which are on sale now and find out.

SPEAKER_01

Um but remember when we had Barbie, right guys, right? So we did a full Barbie section, so naturally we Barbie came to the show, we had the Barbie box, all perfect. What we didn't tell the kids on the stage was that Barbie was gonna come on the stage with them. Yeah, so Barbie just started strutting them out, but actually worked so well. I mean, to be fair, professionalism, none of the kids flinched.

SPEAKER_00

No, like I think they looked at my hood oh.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, Barbie's obviously Barbie's here. Why would you?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, why would Barbie not be here? But we've also had throwback to I think it was in 2017 when we did trolls. We did trolls. Ah, we'll get back up again, which also one of the best times ever. Um, and we had like Poppy on stage, but that was one of the instances again we didn't tell the kids, and maybe that didn't work out in our favour so well.

SPEAKER_01

I think they got a little fright. I think we're just a little bit young. Yeah, that was a bit different as well because it's like a it's like a mascot. Whereas it looks with Barbie, it's like a human.

SPEAKER_00

There's a photo, there's a photo. I think I put it up recently for the swipe through. I'm sure that was a photo from 2017, and actually, like I know you're not gonna see it on camera, but I remember going like, look at the size of that thing compared to the like the kids, it's actual it was actual massive. Um it was so funny as well. But I love looking through old photos, like I think that's something I love about doing socials now is like the throwback and like shout out to Cadden, that was hard to do. By the way, in case you've not seen the photo, the kids are the size of Poppy's leg, it's not even up to our head, up to our knee, like it's it's so funny, but we've got characters this year which is 100%. And like there you go, there's there's an experience that I bet you I wouldn't have remembered us doing our trolls dance, yeah. But because of Poppy, thank you.

SPEAKER_01

We just try and we need to keep it different every year, like even due to like the front house entertainment and thing, like we've had bagpipers, we've had saxophonists, we've had litter heads, we've yeah, yeah, we've had that was cool last year. We had uh a flash mob of singers a couple of years ago. What's that we had as well? Like we had a little mixture. Oh yeah, like all the random even the like the backdrops and things that we've used as well, like the focal opportunities is attracted to different every year.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my goodness, the um message wall last year.

SPEAKER_01

The message wall was a bad moment for me. I love that. And actually just so nice to see everyone just get involved. Yeah. It just like the writing was getting so tidy on it.

SPEAKER_00

It was actually so so nice to see everyone get involved in that. I mean, again, that was one of the ones that getting it there was a bit like oh I know because it was like six foot tall.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we had to send a van company to the printing company to pick that up because it wouldn't fit in. There was no other way to get it there.

SPEAKER_00

So which I mean thank you to both of them.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, thank you to thank you to all the printers and the van men out there that are that are doing that.

SPEAKER_00

Media prints are the are just yeah, they are the best.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, they're honestly too good.

SPEAKER_00

But if you if you never need anything tinted, shout out Media Print. This is an ad. No, I know. Shout out Media Print and Robert the Van Man. Robert the Van Man. No, but like honestly, that was so sweet to watch last year. And then we're what we were laughing about earlier as well is that even dur I don't know what I'm laughing already. Even during lockdown, we did something called we did something called From Stage to Screen, where we filmed like little clips and my eyes are watching because I'm laughing. Obviously, we couldn't do the show that year. We couldn't do the show that year where everyone was in lockdown, so we filmed like different clips and we put together like a big compilation for like a show on the screen that was going to get premiered on a Zoom. And you think to yourself, surely there can be no entertainment on a Zoom. Oh no no, we had a live saxophonis and a live TJ. So imagine you've just watched the show, you you stay on a Zoom, and there's you're just in your living room, like listening to your own spaces so fun. But like again, but the best like so much fun, and one of these times as well that you look back on and go, things were so different, but we still made it work. Oh, yeah. I think that that was that was really a time that you just had to adapt quickly because everything just went.

SPEAKER_01

And our main thing across everything that we do is giving people the best experience and like the best memories possible. So if that means that we're going to hire a DJ to play from his living room into your living room, then so be it.

SPEAKER_00

If that means we were up every Saturday morning at 10am with our Teddy Bears in the living room. Yeah. We had like kind of picnics and stuff.

SPEAKER_01

My mum's back room. I moved it all about. I had towels draped from the back because it was like it was in the conservatory, so it's big open windows. Moved it about, and you bet 9am. I was there.

SPEAKER_00

Crazy. Doing good. Button shapes in your own living room, really. It was so fun. It was actually so much fun. I put musical box on Zoom. Oh my goodness, oh Afrogirl trying to do anything on Zoom with a music delay. Because you'd be dancing there, you'd be like, Oh, yeah, okay.

SPEAKER_01

Like four kids behind when they hear it. Oh, it's so funny. Oh, but it just makes sense. No, it did just make sense. It just makes sense. Even like we take our content so seriously. Obviously, this podcast is part of content, but like on Show Day, we've got two videographers and a photographer hired in to be there. So all staff. Plus, all staff, like it's a full content plan, and like we take it so seriously.

SPEAKER_00

Like, we're starting to look at the content plan now for Showday to be like this is what we do.

SPEAKER_01

It's just so nice to look back on. Like the Christmas show just gone is the first one that we did a vlog from it. Yeah, and I have watched it so many times, it's so sweet. Yeah, I think it really like captures just the whole vibe of the day. We're vlogging the summer show again, so parents and guardians be ready to cut some shapes for the vlog. But it's just such a nice thing to look back on.

SPEAKER_00

I think as well, like we only started doing this maybe a year or I think it must have been two years ago now. See the audience content at the end of the show. I love that I love that so much. Like just seeing everyone's reactions to their kids, and like my favourite one, I think everyone's favourite one is shows your favourite dance move. Because I mean we see where the talent comes from. 100%. Um 100%. So, guys, make sure before you come you stretch and warm up. But it's crazy because I still have stuff now, like my phone's been running out of storage, I can't update it. So I was like, I was like going through and um deleting loads, and I was like, I still have stuff from last year's show that I can still use because we like like on the day we take loads, yeah. Like it's crazy. It's from the minute you walk in to the minute you leave, you better you best have your phone out.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, the team are just on it as well now with like anything that happens, or I know that I need to come fully ready to be on camera at all times. At all times, even when we have our rehearsals and it's full content.

SPEAKER_00

Full content.

SPEAKER_01

Um just so nice to look back on and and see it, see the progression, and just yeah, it's a message.

SPEAKER_00

One of the videos that sticks out from from me last year, and we wouldn't have been able to do it if we didn't do this was the from I can't remember if we did from rehearsal to the stage or from studio to the stage. And it was like this, that just that a little bit. We filmed something in class and then we filmed it on the stage, something that took not even a minute. But it was just so nice. How the costumes changes, how the props changed it, how the everything we just spoke about, the letters and the backdrop and yeah, even just like the the progression of the students on like even though it's a couple weeks before the show, but it's a different energy.

SPEAKER_01

Just that it's been cleaned a lot more for them.

SPEAKER_00

You've had your rehearsal at that point, so you're you're over that kind of air of performing. Um but yeah, it's so lovely. Yeah, I love that video.

SPEAKER_01

I know all these things just make sense. People say it's a bit extra, but it wouldn't be a dancing show without it being a bit extra. I don't think there's anything wrong with being extra. Absolutely not.

SPEAKER_00

Not at all. I think that it just makes you memorable. And that goes for people and places. If things are extra, you'll remember them. A hundred percent. Like it's just that's that's life.

SPEAKER_01

But we've had so many random things, haven't we?

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. What if you've listened to this episode? I want you to try and guess what things we're gonna have this year.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, or send us a message with your favourite random like crazy prop that you've saw. Would love it with me, like there's Captain America cutting about the audience before the show.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god. Oh my god, it's in a spider-wan. We're like, whoa, watch yourself. Yeah, Spider-Man was great. He was great, he was so good. But yeah, tell us what your guys' favourite one was and what you look what you're hopefully looking forward to this year's show. It's not long to go. No, I know.

SPEAKER_01

Like on that note, let's if you have any spoilers, exactly. We'll wrap this up because we could sit here all day. But lovely to chat, lovely to have laughs.

SPEAKER_00

There we go. Yeah, and we'll see you. Oh my goodness, next week's episode will be show day. Oh so at the show, and there'll be a little thing in the morning for you guys. So stay tuned for that. Bye. Bye.
