My vision is to help women break the chains of their pencil in their struggles and fears to create new chumpers that only are from the camera for us. I'm on a mission and punction to empower you and I'm the woman out there. This is gonna be your new favorite podcast for daily devotionals and Bible study chats.
SPEAKER_01Hey guys, welcome to episode 18 of the podcast. Today we will be um talking about Psalms 101. Um before we get started, I want to start in prayer as always. Dear Heavenly Father, I just ask that you open our hearts, open our minds today, fill us up with your Holy Spirit, fill us up with your daily bread today. Father, I pray over the word that is about to be um spoken and received, and I just pray that your presence is with us during this time and that the um the words that I need to say will be given and that you speak through me, Father. Amen. Alright, so um I think I'm gonna start by reading the entire poem all the way through, um, just so that we can kind of like get an idea and and hear what it's about, and then um I'll go back through and like dissect it, you know, like verse by verse. Um so here we go. It's only a total of eight verses, so it's not super it's not super long, it's a shorter song. Um so um I'm gonna read all eight verses. Says I will sing of your love and justice, Lord. I will praise you with songs. I will be careful to live a blameless life. When will you come to help me? I will lead a life of integrity in my own home. I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar. I hate all who deal crookedly. I have nothing to do with them. I will reject perverse ideas and stay away from every evil. I will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors. I will not endure conceit and pride. I will search for faithful people to be my companions. Only those who are above reproach will be allowed to serve me. I will not allow deceivers to serve in my house, and liars will not stay in my presence. My daily task will be to ferret out the wicked and free the city of the Lord from their grip. So um this is a poem that David wrote. I'm gonna give a little quick recap on um a story of David. Um I don't know if you already know it or not, I'm not gonna go super deep into it, um, but just so that we have some background knowledge um on the situation that happened so we can kind of see the correlation to this poem that he wrote. Um so long story short, David um met this woman um at the well and he slept with her. Um, he thought she was really pretty, she slept with her, and um, well, he got her pregnant. Um, she had a husband, so she was obviously having an affair um with her husband with David. Um, and so when David found out that she was pregnant, um obviously they panicked. Her husband was away at war. Um, and so basically they kind of plotted this out where she was going to bring her husband back, you know, for the night. Uh the three of them would hang out. The plan was for them to hang out, um, you know, eat dinner, get drunk, and she would sleep with her husband. So that way when she told him that she was pregnant, it all kind of like aligned up. Well, you know, they brought him home, they had dinner, they got drunk, and he was just so in the mindset of the war that he really just wasn't like in the mood to sleep with his wife. Um, he was just, you know, kind of just got drunk and went to bed. Well, so they kind of like crap, like this plan didn't work. So he went had gone back to war. Well, you know, David started panicking and flipping out because he's like, What am I gonna do? Like, what's gonna happen? And he kind of just started like losing it. Um, and obviously he had realized the depth of his his sin, you could say, of of of his decision and his actions. So they started kind of panicking, and so he took things to the next level. He's like, Okay, well, if we can't make that work, um, then we'll just get rid of your husband and we'll keep the baby and be together. Well, how do we get rid of the husband? Well, he's at poor. Uh so David pulled some strings, had the husband moved up to the front line in war so that he would die in battle. Um, so that she would essentially be a widow and they could, you know, have the baby and be alright. So that's what happened. Um, and then they had the baby and the baby died, um, as a consequence of David's actions. So, you know, during that time you would think that a normal person would be angry, you know, like you can imagine, like you thought like, you know, that decision was done and over with, and you know, you the blessing of the baby had come, and you would think like you're on to new things, but he still had a harvest from his past actions um and consequences for that. And so when the baby died, of course he was sad, but he was like, you know what, Lord, I'm still gonna praise you, and I am still um going to keep my relationship with you, and I'm gonna repent for what I did, and you know, he he kind of came closer to God, and it was a really good turning point for him um in his faith, and you know, he repented and came close to the Lord, and he wasn't mad at the Lord or, you know, taking it out on him like, how could you? No, like he was very accepting of of everything and continued to stay close in the Lord and rely on the Lord to get him through, and knew that better times and better blessings would be ahead. Um and so you can kind of see that in the poem here. Um so I'm gonna chunk it up now and I'm gonna reread verse one and we'll kind of go into it. So verse one says, I will sing praise to you, Lord. So he's declaring that he's gonna praise God for his goodness. You know, um, he's going to, he's like, you know what, Lord, you are worthy of my praise. You are worthy of, you know, worship. And so this could look like worship music, you know. Maybe you worship him, you thank him for all the things that he had done for you in prayer, you know, verbally praising him for how awesome he is. By doing, just honestly doing his will and his work is something that it praises, is is praising. Um, you know, and so this is something like personal that you do when you praise God. You're not just like praise God, no, but like you're really praising him for who he is and what he's done and for how you see him, praising God in a way that makes sense in your life, right? Um, for the things that you have a reason to praise him for. Like I'm gonna, I'll give an example. Um, so long story short, I didn't know if I could have kids. I had a miscarriage, miscarriage is multiple in the past. Um, so I didn't really know if I could get pregnant, and I got pregnant, and it was all by the God's blessing and his plan for me. Um, and he revealed that it was his plan. So, you know, there was kind of just a lot of pregnancy complications going on the whole time and uh a very complicated birth. Um, and but all through it all, the baby was healthy, I was healthy, we all made it out. Um, and it was just such a true blessing, honestly, and I was just so blessed because yes, a baby is a blessing, but I didn't think I could have a baby. I kind of had lost hope in that. And um, I had tried for a while and nothing was happening. So the fact that all of a sudden I just was pregnant, that was God's work, that was his blessing, and so I owe praise to him. And so something a way for me that I praise him that's personal for me is I love to sing worship music or listen to worship music while I'm spending time with my little baby. Um when we take a walk, um, we took a walk the other day and I had some worship music on to just, you know, be in his presence and to give him praise for this beautiful blessing. Um, you know, so like that's how that's a personal thing on on a way that I praise God and that I will sing praise to him. Um so that's just my example of how I make praise personal for me. But, you know, praise should be personal. Um, you know, thanking him and appreciate, you know, appreciating for what he's done in your life, but also what he will do. You know, that's a big thing of saying, you know what, God, I praise you for the future blessings I had that have yet to come. Um and then he goes on in verse two, and he says, I will pay attention to the way of integrity. So he says, I'm gonna live with a heart of integrity in my house. That's what he says. I will live with a heart of integrity in my house. So the word integrity means to be honest and having moral principles. So in the first sentence, he's saying he's gonna pay attention and he's gonna work on being honest and having good moral principles in life, because that's what integrity means.
unknownRight?
SPEAKER_01So he's like, you know what, Lord, I'm gonna make sure I'm gonna work on and my heart and that I'm being honest, that I'm having good, you know, godly moral principles in my life, and then he continues to go further in his statement, and he says, He will live with integrity. So he's going to live with honesty and good moral principles, even in his home. You're like, well, what does that mean? Like, in your home? What do you what what what happens in your home? You do things that you don't do out in public, you um, you know, you do things in or you know, when nobody's watching, right? It doesn't mean necessarily in a bad sense, but you know, like when you're home, you are in PJs with no makeup on and your hair up, or you know, like for instance, I wear eyelashes, so obviously when I'm home and nobody's looking at me, like I got my lashes on. So um that's what he's saying. He's saying, I'm going to live with honesty. I'm going to live with good moral principles, even in my home when nobody is watching me. Even when nobody's looking, Father, I'm going to be honest. Even when nobody is looking, I'm going to have good moral, godly principles. Um that's a bold statement, and then that he does. And then in verse three, he says, I will not let anything worthless guide me. So he declares to the Lord that he will not look from approval from the world. I'm not going to let anything that's worthless guide me. I'm not going to let anything worthless tell me, you know, be my approval. Right? Like, for example, like seeking a man that's telling you that you're pretty, right? That's approval from another person, you know, that's broken in the world about your appearance or your personality, whether or not you follow the standard of the world or, you know, you know, approval, like in the sense of like having a college degree and having a good paying career, right? Um, but like not letting your anxiety define your identity, not letting depression be your identity. You know, so that's what David's saying. He's like, I'm not going to let any of that be my guide in my path in life. I'm going to let you and your will and what you've done for me and what you have for me be my will. And then he goes on in verse three, and he says, I hate what faithless people do. It will not cling to me. So he's saying, I'm not going to succumb to the worldly standards. Um he's not going to believe that partying is the definition of having a good life. He's not going to let ideas like, oh, be oh, she's being a bitch or she's being mean or anything like that. He, you know, or anything that would faithless people might say. Um, you know, he's not going to live by that standard. That's not how he's going to think. That's not how he's going to act, right? Um, treat, you know, I'm gonna treat them the way he treated me. You know, like he's not, he's making this statement, like, I'm not gonna let any of them, um, I'm not gonna believe in that. I'm not, I'm not gonna think like that. Um, and then in verse 4, he says, I will not be involved with evil. He declares to the father that he will not do evil things. I will not be involved with evil. This could be as simple as this doesn't have to be like super evil things, obviously, yes, you know, like, I don't know, theft or killing, right? But like it's also evil in the simple terms, things that we might not often think. Gossiping behind friends' backs, making fun of us, somebody whose special needs, making fun of an old person. Um, maybe you just watched an old person or a pregnant person struggle getting in their car or getting groceries in their car, and you didn't you didn't choose to help them. That's evil. Um, knowing that somebody is not saved and not having the care in your heart to try to reach out to them, that's evil, right? Things that that's that's all evil. So he's saying, I'm not gonna be involved with evil, I'm not gonna be caught up in um in having evil thoughts and an evil heart. He doesn't just say, like, I'm not going to be involved with evil, but then in verse 5, he says, I will destroy, I will silence anyone who secretly slanders his neighbor. So he's saying, you know, if anyone knows, if he knows that anyone is talking badly about other people or talking behind their back, not only is he a not going to partake in that evilness, but he's going to silence them. He's going to silence the person who is. He's going to say, hey, that's rude. We shouldn't be talking about, you know, Amber behind her back. We shouldn't be, you know, saying that about her. You know, we should be praying for her. And he's going to, you know, silence those people who are gossiping. He's going to silence those people who are thinking negatively or saying negative things. Um, and then he says in verse seven, I will not let anybody who lies to me guide me. He promises to the Lord. He won't let that kind of person influence them. Hold on. Let me go back because my notes are messed up. So in six and seven he says, I will search for faithful people to be my companions, only those for who are above to reapproach and to will be allowed to serve me. I will not let allow, I would not allow deceivers to serve in my house. And liars will not stay in my home. So he's saying, I'm not gonna let anybody who lies to me guide me. If they're lying, I'm not I'm not gonna let them lead me. I'm not gonna let them guide me the way. You know, he promises to the Lord that he's not going to let that kind of person be and influence them. He's not gonna be influenced by people who lie. You know, that could be a boss, that could be a friend, a Christian friend, you know, maybe a Christian leader, maybe family members, you know. So be careful to notice um that he doesn't just immediately cut that person off because, as Jesus says, you know, you love and forgive them, but he's also not going to let them guide you or influence him to make decisions. Then he goes on in verse eight, and he says, Every morning I will silence and destroy the wicked of the land. So he declares to God that he will silence those people around him that are wicked when someone chooses to be evil or petty or rude or angry just because, you know, for whatever reason, he's gonna intercede. He's gonna tell that person there's no need to be evil. He's gonna advocate for being kind, continuing to plant seeds in people, even in the wickedness. And that's truthfully, you know, a quick a really bold statement, and something that I uh ever since I read this poem have been intrigued to do so. Um I'll give an example, and it's not always easy. Um, long story short, somebody in my family is going through a rough time. Um, and they're just going through a lot, is all I'm gonna say. And they've made some questionable choices and they have said some very rude and questionable things. Um, and so there's somebody else in my family who was um kind of slandering their name and kind of talking badly about them. I don't want to say talking badly about them, but they were they were saying, you know, I guess you could say they were talking badly about them. They weren't saying very kind things about that person. Um they were kind of angry and saying like how they're fed up with them and how they're done being nice to them and things like that. And I was like, you know what? No. And I interceded and I said, No, we shouldn't be talking like that. We shouldn't be saying things like that. We should be we should be praying for this person, we should be continuing to be the light to this person, we should be continuing to be the love to this person, we should be continuing to help this person. Yes, they hurt us, yes, they said mean things to us, yes, they were making questionable decision decisions, but that doesn't mean that you know we need to be mean to them, you know, we don't need to be wicked to them, we don't need to be angry towards them, or we can we're allowed to be angry, but we're not we don't need to act out on our anger. Um, you know, so I silenced that and I silenced that person and was like, hey, we're not gonna we're not gonna say things like that. And you know, that family man that family member I can't talk, that family member responded and was like, you know what, you're right, that's something that you know that was a very responsible response, and you know, I just had a really long day at work and you know, and and and that person was able to kind of reevaluate and be like, oh yeah, you know, and you're right, and that was wrong. Um, and so like I encourage you guys to do that when you hear somebody or whether it's text or in person, by phone, whatever, when somebody is talking badly or being wicked to other people, I you know, in destroying somebody's image or you know, it's destroying somebody, I encourage you to silence them. Don't you know, yes, don't partake in it. That's a big thing. Don't be a part of it, but also don't um don't allow it, silence that. Lead by example. I say that all the time. Lead by example, be the light, you know, say, hey, let's let's not let's not talk like that, you know, let's let's do this instead. Let's be encouraging. Um and then in verse eight, uh just kidding. Already read out verse eight. Um so we need to really pay attention to how David ends the poem because when he says at the very end of verse eight, he will do these things every morning. Every morning I will silence and destroy. My daily task is to silence. So he says, every morning I will do these things. He declares this to the Lord. That's his declaration. He's not just like saying this in a poem of like, oh, these are things I need to work on. But this is a declaration to the Lord that he's going to work on these things every morning, every day, his daily tasks, not just once, but continually it's a bold statement. Um, so and I encourage you guys to do the same. I have a little cute um graphic that I made of Psalms 101 decorations. I actually made it for myself when I first read the poem, um, just to help me like have a visual um to actually be encouraged to be like David and to do these things in a poem. So I would, if you guys are interested, you can click in the there's a link in the show notes that you can click on to get the little graphic. Um, it'll bring you to my Pinterest of the little poster. Um, but it's a Psalms 101 declarations, and so it says like every morning I will praise and sing praise to you, Lord. I will pay attention to the ways of integrity, I will live with a heart of honesty and moral principles, even when nobody's watching. I will silence anybody who secretly slanders their neighbor, I will silence the wicked of the land. And then, you know, I switch it and it says, I will not look for approval in the ways of the world, I will not practice what faithless people do or be involved in. I will not allow anybody to guide me that lies to me. And then it ends with, but I will live for you. So again, if you're interested in that, um click on the link in the show notes uh to to get that. Um and I just want to close in prayer, but before I do, um I just wanna I just wanna say, you know, this can seem kind of hard or tricky, um overwhelming that this is a lot to, you know, change in our hearts and to work on. But I wanna say in Matthew 19, verse 26 says Um Jesus looked at them and said, With man this isn't possible, but with God, all things are possible. So I just encourage you to, you know, with that today. Um that all things are possible by Christ. So um with that, I'm just gonna close down prayer real quick. And uh we'll be done. Dear Father, I'm just so thankful for this word today. I'm so thankful for your presence being here. Um and I just ask that you know weigh on the hearts and weigh on the minds and help encourage these people today, become and and have these declarations just like David did, and and to be encouraged to have David-like faith, um, and to say that they are not going to be conformed of the worldly ways, that they are not gonna be part of the evil, they are gonna silence the evil, that they're gonna get up every day and they're gonna declare these things, that they are going to praise you, Lord. I pray that over their faith today, um, that they know that even when things seem hard and struggling and overwhelming, that they know that they can do all things in God. Um, that even when it seems impossible, that with God all things are possible. Um, amen. So I hope you guys enjoyed today's episode.
