Welcome to the Bamba Gamma podcast, and I'm Miguel Amber. I'm just a Proverbs 31 woman, empowering women to step into their on-the-fire for the Lord mentality. I encourage us to live in our faith, to grow, and to believe in the calling that God has for us. My vision is to help women break the chains of their past of inner struggles and fears to create new chapters that only our father can write for us. I'm on a mission and passion to empower you and all the women out there. This is going to be your new favorite podcast for daily devotionals and Bible study chats. Hey guys, welcome into the BibleCow podcast. Um, welcome to today's episode, which is episode 19. We are talking about how to pray. So we will be in Matthew chapter 6 today. Um, I just want to start by saying I'm so sorry I have dropped the ball this last week. Um I did not drop any episodes. Um, me and my daughter were sick, and then there was Easter, and then honestly, like the domino effect just started happening, and I had a hard time getting my life back together. Um, but here we are. So um before we get started, I just really would like to open in prayer. Um, so here we go. Dear Father, um, I just ask that you open our hearts, that you open our minds, that you fill us up with your Holy Spirit today, Father, that you speak the words through me that need to be said. Amen. Okay, so um this is really like a template of like a proper prayer, and not every single prayer has to follow this template. Um, but at the same time, you know, this is really a um just a proper template for on how us we should be getting used to, getting to the habit of of you know how we're praying. Um, you know, obviously sometimes we speak to him just like to, you know, a friend or a dad. Um, but you know, this lesson is really more for the formal prayer to the Lord, um, you know, the big one that you should be having every day. Um so with that being said, I am going to jump right on into scripture, and what I'm gonna do here is I am going to read you um some word, and then we will kind of break it down and study it as we go. Um, just that way I feel like it's better if we can just start, you know, hearing the word first. Um yeah. So we are talking about the Lord's Prayer, and so in verse nine through thirteen says this, then this is how you should pray. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us for our trespasses as we forgive those whose trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others of their sins, your forgot your father will not forgive your sins. Um I read extra two verses. Um so I'm sure you have heard this prayer before. Um I'm sure maybe I know for me my grandparents used to recite this prayer, and as much as that's a a cool thing to do, um, it's more than just blabbing the words from the Bible because you need to, it's a template. This is something that you need to be um doing that is specifically, you know, um for you. In verse 53 says, And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray and standing in the synagogues, standing on the street corners to be seen by others. But truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you go and pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your father who is unseen, and then your father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like the pagans, for they will for they will think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your father knows what you need before you ask him. So when studying and praying, sorry, not when studying, when praying to God, this is not the time to be public about your faith. This is the time to be one-on-one, intimate with him. You know, as it states in verse 6, he tells us to shut the door, pray in secret. This does not mean that we need to be ashamed of our faith. Um, that is not at all what they're saying by this, you know. Yes, we pray over people, yes, we pray with people. Um, that's a totally different sermon, but today we are speaking about when we are praying to God, um, where we need to come talk to him. This is an intimate thing, this is not something that we need to kind of um brag about, right? Jesus goes on and continues to say, very specifically in verse 7 and 8, don't worry about your prayer, don't worry about your message sounding perfect, don't worry about, you know, being wordy and having fan fancy words. I'm sure often we feel, I know we all do at times feel insecure about our prayers when we hear, you know, our church leaners um or other people who pray and and they have such a well-constructed prayer. Um, it makes us anxious. But prayer is really never about sounding good, it's really just about coming from the heart because the Lord knows our hearts and he knows our minds, and it's really just about us having that communication and speaking with him personally and bringing our thanksgiving and bringing our requests and bringing our praise to him. Um, so I'm gonna go ahead and I'm gonna jump into Luke chapter 11, and this is going to be verse 1 through 4. Um, he says this. He says, When finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, just as John has taught his disciples. So he said to them, When you pray, say this Father, hallowed be thy name, your kingdom come, give us each day our daily bread, forgive our sins as we have also forgiven everyone who sins against us, and lead us not into temptation. Right? So Jesus quite literally says, This is how you should pray. He kind of gives you the template right there, um, as he was speaking to his disciples to follow. And so if you want to pray this prayer, you know, this really needs to come intentionally, and you know, not just saying it because you feel like you have to or reciting the words because you feel like that's the right thing to do. Um, it's good to obviously memorize scripture, but this really needs to be an intentional, um, personal thing that God um really wants from you. And so, you know, however, this is this is whole prayer is broken up into four big pieces for our own personal proper prayer. So we're going to break down this prayer into the chunks. Um, so the very first piece starts with the first line of saying, Oh Father, your name be honored as holy, right? Um bear with me because my notes uh written in a different um Bible dialect versus my actual Bible of what I just read. Um I like to jump around a bit and do different, you know, different versions of the Bible just because I feel like it helps better understand when you're studying. But anyway, let me get back to it. So the first chunk um in the first line says, O Father, your name be honored as holy. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. So you start by glorifying him. That's what he's doing. You start by praising him, you start by thanking him, you know, stating, I know, Father, that you were the holy one. And you know, think about it how you would approach a king or a queen, right? You don't just walk up to them and be like, hey, I have some requests for the town. They would never just like let you in like that. Obviously, through Jesus' blood dying on the cross for every single one of us, that is one of the awesome things that we never have to go through like a certain necessarily thing to get to God. Um, but it's also there's a proper way to appreciate him, there's a proper way to come to him, to announce him. So just like you would of anybody else who is high in value, you know, especially God, even more so that we are speaking to the one and only God and to the one and only, you know, Jesus. And so we need to approach him um with you know respect. And so we start that by by saying, Thank you so much. You're so holy, you're so amazing, you know, and and it it doesn't this is our own Thanksgiving, this is our own praise, this is your own worship that you're coming to him first in prayer. So it can look however you want it to. I I know for me in the morning, I always say, you know, good morning, God, good morning, Holy Spirit. And I always love to say, Thank you so much for another day, thank you so much for breath of my lungs, you're so amazing. Um, and I and I thank you so much for for the blessings of being able to allow us to be alive here today. And so just thanking him for how amazing he is, and um, you know, and make it personal, you know. How are you thanking him? What are you praising him for um in your own life? And so then the next sentence uh in the second part goes on to say, give us this day our daily bread. Um and so often this is misinterpreted as thinking Jesus is talking about actual food. And Jesus, um, if you know who Jesus is, I'll tell you his character is he's always speaking in like parables or analogies, right? Um so the sentence is really what he's saying is we give us what we need for today, right? Because our daily food, we need food every day, is fuel to run and to you know live for the day. So we need fuel for our spirit, we need fuel for our soul. Um, and what is that? God's word. So it's saying, give me my daily food, give me my daily word, give me your daily message to prepare me for my day today. Um, I especially encourage you to do this in the morning. Um, but you know, I know you will, I don't know if I've I think I've said it before. Um, a lot of people will often hear me say that in prayer. Um I will say, you know, open my heart and open my mind, and you know, I just really want God's presence here with me while I give messages or even receive messages and sermons, and I will a lot of times say, um, you know, give us our daily bread. Um and so this is kind of that next piece of your prayer. You know, you you have now thanked him, you have now praised him, worshiped him for who he is, and now you're gonna say, you know what, Jesus, fill me up with your word today, whatever it is I need to hear, whatever it is I need to be learned today, fill me up with the daily bread, fill me up with your fuel, fill me up with the word um, you know, for today. And then, you know, the third piece is the prayer continues to go on with, forgive us for our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us. So further from, you know, saying, Okay, thank you, God, you're so worthy and amazing. You know, open up my heart to really receive what you have to say. We say, you know what the our father will sent Jesus to die on the cross to forgive us of all of our sins, every single one of us. We were forgiven. And so this is a declaration, this piece here to say that I will forgive others. You know, um as it says in um you know Matthew six here at the very end, I think in verse seven and eight. Nope, hold on, I got that wrong. It is in uh uh twelve and thirteen, fourteen and fifteen. Jeez, can't get my life together. Um in Matthew 6, 14 and 15, he says, For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive this others of their sins, then the father will not forgive your sins. Not gonna get super into it because I have a sermon on forgiving. I have a podcast episode on forgiving. So if I encourage you to go listen to it, um I believe it's episode 13, I think. Um, so encourage you to go ahead and go listen to that when you um have time. But um, so the third part of this prayer is we're saying, you know what, I'm making this declaration, you know, to say I'm going to forgive other people as you have forgiven me. You know, I'm gonna I'm going to forgive my coworker who really said something that hurt my feelings like, you know, yesterday. I'm not gonna hold on to it, but I'm gonna forgive them because you've forgiven me over and over and over and over and over again for the many, many, many very messed up things that I did that I really don't deserve, that you forgive me anyway. So, because of that, like I owe it to you. I want to forgive this person because they are deserving for being forgiven because they said XYZ that hurts my feelings, or maybe it's your parents, or maybe it's a family member, or you know, a coworker or friend, maybe you got into a car accident and somebody ran into you, um, whoever you know it is that you need to work on forgiving. This is a declaration to say, you know what, I'm gonna forgive them. Um, and so then the very fourth piece, um, the big chunk here says, lead us not into temptation, but they'll deliver us from evil. So this is where you are asking God to help you. This is, you know, as is very self-explanatory here. He says, you know, we're asking God, and we're saying, Hey, like help me stay away from the temptations of the world, you know, keep me safe from the evil things that are in this world, help me have a godly character, help me have love in my heart, right? Or I can get real wordy and go on to say, you know, the things that I would be asking God for, you know, help. And uh so this doesn't need to be um your exact words necessarily. Uh of course we you can certainly pray, hey, keep me out of temptation, but this is more so your requests. Um, so you know, I I have heard a lot of people say to me, they're like, oh wow, you know, like it's just a reality check that, you know, we as Christians, so many of us are so selfish, and the second we pray, we're just like God help me with patience with this person. And it's just me, me, me, what we need, what we what we need help with, and we don't take into consideration who we're talking to. And so you see this Lord's Prayer template. Yes, we need help, and yes, our requests are important, but that is uh the fourth piece here. That is towards the end of our prayer. We need to acknowledge God, we need to praise God, we need to ask his presence to fill us up. We need to say, you know what, God, you have forgiven me, and I'm going to forgive others because forgiveness is such a huge pillar to our salvation. Um, and without it, we don't have it. Um, so we can't sit here and begin to even talk to God about our requests or our issues or you know, who we're praying for in other people if we can't uh do those other things first. Um, and so this is you know where we're gonna be like asking for help, you know, help me with patience with this co-worker, um, help me get rid of my bitterness with, you know, my uncle, help me, you know, have peace in my heart because I've been really anxious lately, help me not fear over my finances, right? Like, whatever it is. Like, I'm just coming up with um, you know, examples here, but this is really when your requests come in to play. And this isn't also let me just say this, um, it doesn't say this in the template, but let me just put this point out there. This isn't also like just about your requests, but I really encourage you to pray for other people if you don't already, um, to bring your requests to God about you know, for those other people. Um, right now I have a coworker. Um, she is out of work right now. She's really going through a hard time. Her husband is in the hospital with very bad cancer. Um, um, so please pray for him. Um, he is really going through it, but yeah. Um I think my thing died. Wow. Okay. Anyway, I'm gonna continue. Um yeah, so then I'm gonna wrap this up as the prayer says, you know, thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. So you say, you know what, God, at the end of the day, you are God, you are holy, you have all the glory. Um, and so I'm gonna give you an example prayer here of like all the pieces put together. I'm gonna say the whole prayer and then I'll kinda see how it's chunked up. So, dear Holy Father, thank you for this new day. You have given me breath in my lungs. Thank you for letting me see a new day. Thank you for sending Jesus to die on the cross for my sins. I am so grateful for the blood of Jesus. Open my heart and my mind to your word today. Fill me up with your presence. Father, I repent for cussing yesterday and for speaking negatively about my neighbor. Forgive me, Father. Allow me to work on that and to help me forgive others and to love others like you do. Help me today have the strength and the peace that I need to get through my day. Help me love my coworkers and have the patience today that I ask for your presence that it stays with me all day during even during the hard moments today, Lord. I cannot do this without you, and I need you, Father. Amen. Right? So the first piece um is you're thanking him for your new day, for the breath in your lungs, for the blood of Jesus. Go on to say, Hey, open my heart and my mind today, fill me up with your Holy Spirit. The third piece is you're you know, you're saying, Help me forgive and you know, repenting for your sins and for what you need to work on. Um, and then then that's where my requests come in to say, and I say, Hey, help me with the strength or help me with this piece, help me love my coworkers. Um, and then I wrapped it up with I can't do this without you, Father. You know, at the end of the day, you're holy. Um, and let me give you uh give you credit for that, you know. Hey God, you're you're holy and you deserve all the glory. Um so I'm gonna wrap this up. I have some real quick uh keynotes here, but I say don't worry about the words sounding perfect, okay? Um it's just it's not necessary. Yes, we all stress it, but don't worry about it. We all are all self-conscious about it, and God doesn't care if it's sounds cool or not. Um two is pay um pray intimately in private. Don't, you know, need to feel like you have to blast it in public. Um, and the third, my key point is um the template. So the first piece of the template is praise and thanksgiving. The second piece is asking God to fill you up to receive his word for the day. The third is forgiveness and repentance, and the fourth is your requests um and your asking for your help. Um so I just want to really encourage you here to um, you know, study this, um, study this scripture, study this this message, come back to it, you know, and really sit with it um and memorize it and uh teach yourself to get into the habit of praying like this. Um I am gonna wrap this up and I want to say thank you so much for listening.
