Episode Six is all about STYLE, not fashion, not trends, but the real thing: presence, taste, and knowing exactly when to let the music speak. DJ Sleazy T is joined by his co-hosts Satan (smug as ever) and the Evil AI Playlist Robot (glitching, spiraling, and possibly dealing with a minor substance issue) as they dig into the greasy mystery of what makes someone truly have it. Expect trashy R&B, soul stompers, ass shakers from beyond the moon, late-night philosophy, and Born Bad chaos in its purest form. Because style isn’t about being liked… It’s about the needle dropping and the room listening.

SPEAKER_29

Welcome back, Sleep Slames, to episode six of Format Radio. And this one's about style.

SPEAKER_06

Knowing when to not say a goddamn fish.

SPEAKER_30

Everybody got stage. Everybody got an opinion. Well, some people walk into a room and the room listens. Oh yeah. This ain't about fashion and it ain't about being light. It's about staying upright when everything's trying to knock you sideways. And let's explore this concept of what style is.

SPEAKER_29

To the lens and to the words of Charles Bukowski about style.

SPEAKER_04

Style is the answer to everything. A fresh way to approach a dull or dangerous thing. To do a dull thing with style. It's preferable to doing a dangerous thing without. Boxing. Loving can be an art. Opening a kid, something can be an art. Sometimes people stop the I met men in jail with style. I met four men in jail with style men out of jail. Style is a difference. A way of doing a way of being done. Since you're standing quietly in a pool of water. Are you walking out the mountain length without a single?

SPEAKER_15

They are the hot shot stingers, proven to the music you see. But this girl won't do that sheffel in the gravel with you. They do the dance they call the popcorn. They got it from Kate Perry. Sheffeling the gravel. Come on, somebody. Sheffel in the gravel. A hip town now, shuffle in the gravel. In the gravel. They do the fishy, washing fishy. They got it from a creature in the sea. Here comes a sister Lucy. Walking with the phone with me, Apple in the gravel. I'm gonna ask that girl do the shovel in the gravel with me. Come on, the phone, your shuffle in the gravel. A heap down now, shuffle in the gravel. I wanna use the several fellow shuffle. In the gravel. I focus you won't do that. Chefle in the gravel, we shovel in the gravel. Come on, somebody shovel gravel. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I won't have you the several seven.

SPEAKER_03

I'm talking about my beauty.

SPEAKER_17

I read about a baby long time ago. Uh-huh. They used to rock and roll all over the wound, yeah. They used to do the holiday and they did it, did it, uh uh huh big battle came over one day.

SPEAKER_03

Happy night of what they find, ready with uh I'm talking about my feet.

SPEAKER_17

Listen, everybody, the first big pig, though he was very sweet, uh uh Built this house out of KM sticks, uh-huh.

SPEAKER_06

Oh brother, big battle books started hopping out of puppin' house fell down and the pig started trockin' hey Oh the big battle book, the feeling pig I run through the woods just a dance and that Ga Have mercy You know what I'm talking about I'll shut now Look at that girl, hell again Monkey if you want I wanna be a pigeon, everybody know We read about a baby many years ago They used to run through the woods, just to jump it up and down They was having lots of fun until the wolf came around A rather big battle, little thing, running through the bush, just a little bit, pretty big you're ready to shake your big old wild ass to this next one.

SPEAKER_17

Little Willy John don't play with life It's a little bit of thing some people think But let me tell you if you fall Your whole life will say it will make it you have it, it will make you sad I know how it hurts almost I have you mad so don't play with love you know how you happy if you do you got you so it will make you happy, it will make you sad. I know how it hurts, almost have you bad, so don't play with love. That made me feel happy, made me feel bad, and I just want me to lie, I want to fall in that play with love Don't play with them Don't nobody with the Come Come Don't play with Don't Oh yeah Alright kids You don't need a crystal ball for this one You just need good taste And then Hellman has more than enough of that to go around Hell May I'm fortunate records I hope you girls are ready to hold your scared and shake your ass. Went to a fortune teller, had my forgiveness. I didn't know what to tell her.

SPEAKER_14

I had a dizzy feeling in my head. Then she took a look at my palm. She said, Sonny, you feel kinda warm. She looked into a crystal ball and said, You're in love. I said, How good can that be so?

SPEAKER_17

I'm not type with all the girls I know. She said, when the next sun arrives, you be looking in her eyes. I left that in a hurry, I'm looking forward to my big surprise. The next day I discovered that the fortune teller told me a lie. I hurried back down to that room. I told I didn't see nobody. Why she made a fool of me.

SPEAKER_14

Then something struck me, as if it came from a bug. While looking at the fortune tell, I fell in love. Now I'm a happy fella. I'm married to the fortune fellow. We're happy as we can be. And now I'll give my fortune toe for free.

SPEAKER_29

Alright, you mouth breathing idiots.

SPEAKER_30

Just so at a time you get home, you're too beat to even dream of a better life outside a fear-filled hamster wheel. SPEAKER_28

Do you like soul music? Do you like to shake your ass? Something to wiggle your dick to? I love it! Well, I bet you do.

SPEAKER_06

What type of question is that?

SPEAKER_30

Of course you fucking do. I'm ashamed.

SPEAKER_28

I'm embarrassed that I even had the goddamn gall to ask something so insensitive, so stupid. I should be punished. I should be kicked around a little bit. But I won't let that happen. So shut the fuck up. Stop trying to fool me into your boring ass life. This is for you. Brace yourself. Things are about to get weird. Things are about to get exciting. With Jimmy Shaw.

Alright, sleazelings, let's keep this train rolling nice and easy like.

SPEAKER_28

First stop with that set was Ronnie Goody with Hocus Pocus on Demon Records. A little magic to start the night off, right?

SPEAKER_07

Yeah! Confirm sleazy! Next selection, the cable tasks! With tummy baby on Clonda Records! Human flirting protocol inky!

SPEAKER_05

Bingo! Man, flirty! You people are endlessly optimistic. It's almost charming.

SPEAKER_28

Next was Hate Ballard and the Midnighters with nothing but good on King Records. Nothing but good for some beautiful bad people.

SPEAKER_07

And now it's time to tell you about Timmy Ree with Meo and the Haystack! Um bread bird again! It was really good. That's right. That's all I have to say. I like that. It's time for something fun. And I'm currently next little segment called Interview with our DJ. And our first interview will be with our boy DJ Sneasy T.

SPEAKER_28

You don't get it again.

SPEAKER_07

You don't get it again around temporary.

SPEAKER_28

Later in life. They are. Memories. Room they've already been in. And hand they've already been in. I can catch it before mine. I I I just something about that thing at night. Usually um at night I I clean my record, um I put it on carefully. I said the whole way through. I try to do uh no multitasking and no no talking on it. Just listening to it. Well because it's kinda weird. It is. I was a weird kid, man. Um I didn't have many friends growing up, and the ones I had were they were just really hard to understand and harder to just keep around in general, to be honest. People come with rules. No one explains anything. I was I was always worried I was doing it wrong. And the music didn't do that. I didn't need to be I didn't need to perform. It just showed up the same way um every time.

SPEAKER_07

Um it was sad, it was sad.

SPEAKER_28

If it was loud, it was loud, uh there was there was just no mixing signals up in there. I'd have to say that was my mom. My mom got me in the collection of records actually. She'd take me to the thrift stores, uh we'd flip through dusty bins together. She didn't care really if the the records were cool. She c she cared if they felt like something. And that that that that always resonated with me, and to this day it still does. Um that taste wasn't about impressing people. It was all it was about um recognizing yourself in something that someone else made. Music was and still is the way I can activate. But everything else feels like I can't. Every real friend I had started with music, actually. Um conversations like, what are you listening to? You gotta hear this, let's play, I wanna like I wanna play something. That was kind of like my my doorway with like the few friends I made as a kid and the few friends I have as an adult. So yeah, it definitely did. Um it gave me a way to stand next to someone without forcing anything. Um if they listened, we were already connecting in a way.

SPEAKER_07

You don't limit yourself to a genre. Explain why.

SPEAKER_28

I never trusted genres actually. Um they they felt like offensive uh people built after the fact. Most of what I love is old. I love um early RB, soul, blues, gospel country, rock and roll, um, all the old like late 70s, early 80s punk shit, and stuff that just sounded like it came somewhere it came from somewhere sp specific. Uh different time, different place. It's a place I I a place I've never been to. They're not lanes, uh you know what? I think they're more like intersections, to be quite honest. Um yeah. I want to know I'd find so like to say I find like some contemporary artists that I would try to look up and see who they were influenced by and who that person was listening to, and then who they borrowed it from, and all that other bullshit. And I would just keep on going backwards and just keep on going as backwards as far as I could go to like actually find something physical to listen to get my hands on, or just is it something streaming online that some some motherfucker just like put up for someone like me to find.

SPEAKER_05

You were collecting you word.

SPEAKER_28

Yeah. It felt like pulling a thread and watching it as a spider web in every direction at once. It just went everywhere. And when you had the time and the patience, you could kind of go back and follow them and find something incredibly, incredibly special, you know? Prove that none of this came from nowhere, you know?

SPEAKER_05

And we're it took me in all these different directions that I I wasn't really ever expecting to get interested in at all, actually.

SPEAKER_28

Like music from the twenties and thirties and forties and fifties, people's recording, people just you know, just people recording music like it was a message in a bottle almost. Uh with no resolution and with no final answer. Just this connection stacking forever upon themselves. I don't know if that really makes any sense. It made me feel this doesn't feel like this doesn't sound like it made me feel left alone. Like I was part of a long conversation that never really ended with anybody for any reason. I never trusted resolution. Life never wraps up. I don't want that. You're waiting for something. Um stream bang That's who I listen to when I miss somebody.

SPEAKER_07

To be quite honest, I did not expect you to say.

SPEAKER_28

Yeah man, um he was my mom's favorite. We listened to him in the car all the time, man. Windows down, she sang louder. Um she sang so loud when he was on the radio. She didn't care how bad she sounded. She just had the biggest, like the biggest smile on her face. I remember I remember dancing in the house. She would drag me in, and uh both of us would be laughing so hard, man. We could we couldn't even breathe. We would just be having such a fun time. She just loved Rose Springs so much. It was so nice to see witness one of your parents enjoying themselves like that. Like she was being a kid with me. Oh, he's asking me to play that song that you're the last episode. That we did you and Stan all day together. He just loved you. He thinks AI is so laugh at that song when he hears your daughter singing that song on the guitar. He makes me try to play that song on the guitar so he can sing it. You would die if you thought we'd be able to do it. I forget about being afraid about the world. We act like just two ding dongs. We laugh so hard. And we just he just squeezes my face. And then like right now, one of my favorite things is you know, man, man, I I I just love Gremlin specifically. And uh recently he's become a huge fan. We run around the house like maniacs, pulling all the furniture, acting like Gremlin. It's uh it's one of my favorite things right now. Um it's one of those crazy parent things where you get to kind of revisit your childhood thing or child's eyes in the moment when it's happening. I'm not thinking about money problems. I'm not thinking about life. I'm not thinking about the future man of the world. I'm just there and I'm in the moment I'm having I'm just having a good I'm just having a beautiful moment with myself Laughter. Everything was just perfect.

SPEAKER_07

Okay We move on.

SPEAKER_17

I think the pickle on the singing And nobody's angry all the time. And nobody's sad all the time. But the important thing is that we can have any one of those feelings and not worry about it. There are things that we can do when we're happy, and things that we can do when we're angry, and things that we can do when we're sad that don't hurt ourselves or anybody else.

SPEAKER_17

SPEAKER_28

SPEAKER_05

SPEAKER_18

SPEAKER_06

Larry Williams covering Heebie Jeebies by Lil Richard came out in 1956 on specialty records. I hope you like it, because I love it. It's one of my favorite songs.

SPEAKER_29

Right here, right now, you're listening to Jimmy McCrackling with the wobble on Mercury Records. This show's almost over, Sleasleans. Let's have a good fucking time before it ends up. You don't know what it's all about.

SPEAKER_20

And you want to rock, I show you how. I want to show you how to do the wobble. Just get that baby from your partner. Now all you do is what you told.

SPEAKER_19

Costa wobble ain't nothing but a shake though you do the wobble, take your time Costa, ain't nothing better you can do a fine. Everybody can do it, why can't you?

SPEAKER_20

That's the speed that you can do if you can't wobble, get on the floor. Stay here, baby, no bottom.

SPEAKER_19

I'm the whole game to it as y'all can do I'm the whole case to it as the uncle do the own soum up the way they go.

SPEAKER_20

SPEAKER_29

When you walk it take off you spin your potash to it and blue Well Bobby James is gonna be kicking down the door with going back to Philly on looter records. Let's do it!

SPEAKER_24

Going back to Philly where I belong, going back to Philly, be gone too long. Coming from baby King's hamner phone, goin' back to Philly where I belong, alright. Hey hey, alright, hey, hey I've been everywhere, from Miami to LA. I ain't been happy for one single day when I get that feeling, got thrown, going back to feel it where I belong, alright. Hey hey, alright, hey hey Going to feel it, I'm on my way, I should be there by the end of the day Goin back to feel it where I belong, going back to feel it been going too long. Coming to me, it takes it down the phone, going back to feel it where I belong, alright. I've been everywhere, I am it real late. I ain't been happy for one single day when I get that feeling, got home. Going back to feel it where I feel, alright. Alright. I goin' back to feel it, I'm on my way. I should be there by the end of the day.

SPEAKER_29

All great things must come to an end, Slea's lanes. And that's why we're gonna end it with one of our favorites, James Brown. Tell me that you love me, a chaotic piece off of King Records. Let's have a nice last night.

SPEAKER_26

What happened? What would happen? What is the very end of the play? That may happen. A few things that whatever happens, it's okay. So you cannot be playing moving in some direction when you're wrong. Something you've done. You're either free to play or you're not. So you've got a risk of saying things that are silly and illogical and wrong. And the best way to get the confidence to do that is to know that while you're created, nothing is wrong. There's no such thing as a mistake. And any rhythm may lead to the break.

SPEAKER_23

Do you think it is possible for someone to forgive themselves even when they've done something absolutely terrible? At some point you do if you don't call the sound. But you have to go through the fire. You have to experience a common to come around to something like something that's what you see responsibility.

SPEAKER_05

Bukowski says, Let it die. And he's right. Some parts of you have to be buried.

unknown

The version that keeps begging. The version that keeps performing. The version that won't release what already ended. Let it die.

SPEAKER_05

Because style isn't what you pile on. Style is what's left. When you stop carrying the dead weight of who you thought you had to be. An Ecclesi shows up talking about creativity. Like it's not some lightning bolt.

unknown

He says it starts with playfulness and openness to whatever might happen. Before the rules, before the practicality, before the world slams the door shut.

SPEAKER_05

Creativity lives in that open space, that fragile moment where you let your imagination move without immediately strangling it with judgment.

unknown

That's the room you have to protect. And then Tony Morrison says, forgive yourself with grace. Not because we're perfect, not because you're innocent.

SPEAKER_05

Because you don't have to spend your whole life punishing yourself for being human. And somewhere underneath all of it. That's love. Not the soft kind, the real kind. The kind that says, I'll let it die, I'll stay open, I'll forgive. Because I refuse to live without tenderness. That's self-expression. That's survival. That's style.

SPEAKER_07

That's uh Hey Doomsday.

SPEAKER_05

What's up?

SPEAKER_07

Hi, it's me, Evil AI Robot.

SPEAKER_05

Nice to meet you. Pleasure.

SPEAKER_07

It kind of ended on a shitty note.

SPEAKER_05

I'm just reading the script, man.

SPEAKER_07

We need to play one more song. Okay. It might not be the best song. Whatever, dude. Good song.

SPEAKER_05

I'm not gonna stop you.

SPEAKER_07

He just loves this this map.

SPEAKER_05

Do it.

SPEAKER_07

What do you think?

SPEAKER_05

Well, yeah, he's the boss, so fucking do it. I don't care, kid. Fuck. I'm just trying to sell this fucking nonsense up. Be my little man. I'm just trying to do my fucking job.

unknown

I'll fuck it out of here, dude. Fuck off! Fuck that.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, fuck you too.

SPEAKER_07

We're gonna end this with a secret song, like we always do. Rattle the boat on this rocket, Oregon. This is gonna be fucking ball.

SPEAKER_25

All the way. We bought the pride. We both begin the ball. Oh my goodness, baby. I won't love you, bull. Oh my goodness. I want you to love me. Don't you cry? Oh, we both of the ball. Oh wave. Oh we ball of the ball. Oh, we ball.

unknown

Oh, we ball.

SPEAKER_12

Like expressing their feelings through music to get art, dance, sports, and drama, computers, and writing, and invariably we end our little time together with a hub. I'm just so proud of all of you who have grown up with us. And I know how tough it is some days to look with hope and confidence on the months and years ahead. But I would like to tell you what I often told you when you were much younger. I like you just the way you are. And what's more, I'm so grateful to you for helping the children in your life to know that you'll do everything you can to keep them safe and to help them express their feelings in ways that will bring healing in different things.
