What does a septic business actually run on?

In this special field episode of Jackquisitions, Jack Carr takes you inside one of the most important assets in any septic company: the pump truck. Instead of talking about acquisitions from a desk, Jack walks through a real septic truck and explains how it works, why every component matters, and what buyers should understand before purchasing a septic business.

From the chassis and vacuum system to the tank, hoses, and disposal process, you'll get a firsthand look at the equipment that drives revenue every single day. If you're evaluating a septic company, understanding the trucks is just as important as understanding the financials.

The trucks are the business. Knowing how they work helps you understand what you're actually buying.

All right, today, guys, we have a treat for you. We have a down septic truck. It's a down septic truck owned by Downs. I know confusing, but this truck is what we run our entire fleet on. It is a the workhorse here is a Kenworth T380, which is a class 7 vehicle, 32,000 gross vehicle weight, uh, carries this wonderful tank on the back. I think it's a 5,000 gallon tank here or 6,000 gallon. I can never tell the difference. But we're gonna walk you through this truck today, all the important pieces, starting with the front. So, of course, this is a CDL truck, meaning you have to have a specialty license to drive this truck, but it's a bigger truck, can carry more septic, more sewage, more waste, which means bigger routes, more money. As we move along, some of the more important parts of this truck is of course it's diesel, but right here is we have the powerhouse of the unit. This is the vacuum pump to the system and what's actually broken right now. It's this Challenger Pro Pack 3410 is going to be what pumps all of the or creates the vacuum to pump all of the sewage out from the tank and into the truck. Here is the second most important part is you actually have the tank itself. It's a 5,000 gallon stainless steel tank. You can see it's really important to have a strong tank, strong welds because it can't, again, it's carrying a ton of uh waste, but also damage. So as we go through, these things are going in the back roads, the back country, they're going around trees, they're going around big rocks, and so we have to make sure that you have a strong tank so that if you accidentally hit some branches, you're not gonna pop a hole in it. Uh, we have around the side, you'll see where we keep all of our tools. We keep our uh rods to find tank lids, we keep our about 200 feet of hosing so that we can get into precarious areas. In that box that's all taped up, we have all of our gloves and all of our smaller items and smaller tools. And then on the back is actually where we hook up to disposal. So on the back, we can open it up the uh gate valves and the ball valves and allow the sewage to then go to the disposal site. Outside of that, we have lighting on the back so that we can do emergency service at night. Again, we want to take care of the truck, not running into anything. If you're listening to this on Spotify or Apple, remember we are video enabled. So turn on your video onto Spotify or Apple or head on over to YouTube so you can actually see this truck.
