A fresh Giannis Antetokounmpo trade rumor drops and we break down the reported four team framework, then call out why the value looks off if the details are real. We also sort through who actually benefits most and why late first round picks can trap a franchise in the middle.
• the reported trade structure sending Giannis to the Miami Heat
• why the return feels light for Milwaukee despite five first round picks
• the case for Detroit landing Tyler Herro as a value win
• why the Lakers add Isaiah Stewart and Khalil Ware for one future first
• how late first round picks change the real math of a superstar trade
• why Miami may still need more moves to contend
For years now, literally years, there has been speculation, there has been widespread news reports, there's been conflicting back and forth on if and when Giannis Antecupo would be traded from the Milwaukee Bucks. And it appears that this morning it has finally happened. And if this is true, if this deal that I'm gonna share with you now is accurate, it's hot garbage. So you can see on the screen here, I'm gonna put the deal up. This is a report. Giannis being traded today. It has not been announced yet, but it's said to be announced this afternoon by Shams Sarania. If the deal is accurate, here's the details of the trade. The Miami Heat get Giannis onto Tecupo. The Milwaukee Bucks in return receive Ron Holland. Jared Vanderbilt, likely a salary filler, Jaime Hawkes, Kasparis, not even going to try to pronounce that one. Three first round picks from the Miami Heat. This year's 2026 first round pick from the Detroit Pistons and a 2031 Lakers first round pick. In the four-team deal, the Pistons get Tyler Hero from the Miami Heat, and my Los Angeles Lakers get Isaiah Stewart, Beef Stew, and Khalil Ware, which Khalil Ware, if you've uh heard the great Gerald Glassford from Lakers Fast Break, that was a huge target that he's been obsessed with this summer, wanted us to acquire. So, Gerald, maybe you can give Rob some props there if you listen to this. I gotta tell you though, it has not been announced formally yet. So this could be speculation, it could be fake news, and I hope it is because if it is, this is, in my opinion, garbage for everybody involved, with the possible exception of the Detroit Pistons, because picking up a 20-plus point scorer in hero for one late first round pick is a pretty solid acquisition on their part, and they had some salary space to fill there. The Lakers, you could make an argument this is a win for them because Khalil Ware is the type of center that uh you can build around with Luca moving forward and giving up what expects to hopefully be anyway for our sake, a late first-round pick five years from now. That's not bad. And I say as Stewart, he's another good strong defender that could pair well with Luka Doncic as well moving forward. So it definitely is solid. Rob always gets the best of these deals when he's involved, and it's actually where he shines the most. But honestly, I would have rather seen us build up more draft capital and maintain that flexibility of keeping that first round pick for a superstar acquisition either this summer or next. But all things considered, if you had to make a move, which he's always constantly on the hot seat, as we know from all of my fellow Lakers fans, this is about as good as you're ever gonna see for one first round pick five years from now to get two quality defensive pieces that can play for you right away and help you compete. The reason I'm disappointed for us, other than it doesn't allow us to go superstar hunting, is it likely means we are gonna probably bring back Austin Reeves and maybe even LeBron James, and you're basically running back the same team with an upgraded supporting cast, but a little underwhelming in my opinion there. It's horrible if this is accurate, in my opinion, for Giannis, because he's going from he's basically going to Milwaukee South. He gets better weather, he gets no state income tax, but this is not a team where he can realistically compete for a championship next season unless other huge moves are made. For the Bucks, yeah, you get five first-round picks, but you don't get any key young piece to build around here. Yeah, some might say Jaime Haquez, but let's be realistic, he's a bench player for the Miami Heat. Ron Holland, same thing. He's a bench player at best. So you really didn't get a piece that's your future superstar. You get five first round picks, but all five of these first round picks are likely to be in the 20s towards the end of the first round every year. It really is just not enough if you're gonna move. Honestly, I like the deal that the Warriors offered at the deadline better than this, where you could have controlled their draft for the next seven seasons between picks and swaps, and you're going into a time where Jimmy Butler's about to be done, Steph Curry's about to be done, Giannis. By the time a lot of those picks came through, you're talking lottery picks because they were all unprotected as well. So I like that deal. Honestly, I even like uh the Lakers deal that we could have offered and reportedly did offer of Austin Reeves, because then you get a key piece that you can build around. I think if this deal is true, which again, we don't know for sure if it is yet, we'll see this afternoon if this is accurate. But if it is, I think the Bucs just locked themselves into mediocrity for the next half to full decade. Giannis, hey, I hope you like the beach and humidity and sun. And if you do, then good for you. But I don't think Reese's his chances to compete for a championship the way that it should if you're gonna move from a team that you've been with for that long. So I guess the winners of this trade really, other than the two headliners of the Heat and the Bucks, the winners of this trade to me are number one, my Lakers and Rob Palenka, and number two, the Pistons.
