May is usually considered graduation season, and it still is, but this year we need to add on its also promotion and get a new job season because more clients, both existing and brand new petites, have been reaching out to share about their new roles, which is so exciting. Seeing so many hardworking, high-achieving women climb the career ladder and get one step closer to their goals is definitely worth celebrating. After the celebrations is when a bit of panic sets in. Women have made comments like, I've been promoted to an executive director, yet I don't feel like I'm displaying the role with the clothes I'm currently wearing. Or my outfits look more middle management versus C-suite. Or Ann Taylor isn't doing it for me anymore. Whether you've recently been promoted or want to be prepared for when an opportunity arises, then this episode is for you. We're gonna talk about the four things to consider when you're ready to up-level your career wardrobe. This is gonna be a super fun conversation, and even better, take away any panic or frustration and replace it with excitement because you'll know exactly what you and your wardrobe need to take it up a notch. I'm Angela, your Petite Style coach, and when you're ready, let's dive in. Welcome to Inside Petite Style, the only podcast created exclusively for women, 5'3 and under. You've built an incredible career, you've navigated all the crazy life changes. And somewhere along the way, getting dressed stopped being easy. Maybe your body's different or your role is different, and your closet, it just has not kept up. I'm Angela Foster, Petite Style Coach since 2018, and creator of the Spark Petite Style Method. And together, you and I will get your wardrobe back in shape. Every week we'll talk about why petite proportions require a different approach. Discover what actually flatters your body shape and works with your lifestyle. And get all the insider shortcuts on where to shop so you're not wasting hours scrolling, or even worse, settling for good enough. This is about more than looking good. It's about walking into any room, whether it's a big presentation or client meeting, a family event, or heck, just Tuesday. And feeling confident, polished, with a style as smart and savvy as you are. Let's get this style party started. Have you ever eaten at Seasons 52? If so, then you know all about their dessert course. If not, at the end of the meal, the waiter brings over a tray of like 12 different desserts in shot glasses. And you can pick a few and leave what you don't want. Take the cheesecake, leave the red velvet. It's very flexible. That's exactly how this episode is gonna work. You and I will chat about the important traits of a polished and pulled together executive wardrobe. And then you get to decide, do you want all the desserts or will one make all the difference that you need in order to love your closet? Because there are as many positions and office environments as there are petite women on the planet. Everything from very creative to very buttoned up and conservative. And while some things hold true, no matter which you find yourself in, you have the power and the freedom to make your career wear feel right for you. Here's what we don't want. If you've ever seen the DV series The Diplomat, then you know exactly where this is headed. If you haven't had a chance yet, I would highly recommend it. Not only is the main character, Carrie Russell, a petite, but everyone in the series is incredible. Anyways, I don't think an episode goes by where Carrie's character, Kate's wrinkled, torn, dirty, messy clothes aren't mentioned. One time her zipper is broken, she uses a safety pin or something to keep her pants up right before meeting with the president. And on and on. The point is, she's super hardworking and brilliant at navigating international relationships. But when her clothes are so distracting that that's all anybody sees, the good stuff gets pushed aside. Versus when our clothes are spot on, they aren't a distraction for you or anyone else. Because we can agree we deserve better than for our clothes to undermine our credibility. You are nothing if not goal-oriented. That's obvious. You wouldn't have reached the level that you're at if you weren't. And like any goal, whether it be career or closet, we have to know where we want to go in order to reach it. To get your imagination going, and because a picture is always worth a thousand words, let's take a look at some fictional yet very stylish women in leadership. Oops, okay, a couple things I almost forgot. All of these pictures are from the Petite Power Dressing Pinterest board. I'll link it in the show notes in case you want to check it out afterwards for some additional inspiration. Second, if you and I have been hanging out for a while, then you know we never look at pictures of women who aren't petite. But in this instance, we had to be a smidge more flexible because the topic was so specific. Okay, now the first question to consider is what does a leadership wardrobe look like to you? Is it structured? Is it full of clean, minimal lines, neutral colors, dark and monochromatic, maybe sharp, polished, timeless or chic, sophisticated or maybe even bold? There are oodles of others, obviously, but how do you want to describe your future style? One or two of the words that were mentioned, or something else? You can always change them later, but picking one or two will start giving our goal focus and point us in the right direction. Characteristic number one of a polished executive wardrobe is to focus on fit. This is incredibly important for petites, because nothing undermines a powerful image like clothes that look like we borrowed them from our big sister's closet. This is one of the many reasons it's so important to know if you're a true petite, meaning you need petite size tops and bottoms both, or if you're a petite hybrid, meaning you only need petite size clothes on the top or bottom, but not necessarily both. Because petite clothes aren't just shorter. There are actually eight different places where petite clothes are shorter, higher, or smaller. We dig into it all a bunch more in the petite versus regular sized episode. And you guessed it, I'll link it in the show notes so you can add it to your play next list. Knowing which fits you best makes life easier, absolutely. But it's crucial when it comes to workwear because there are so many items that are super hard, if not impossible, to alter. Blazers and outerwear, just to name a couple. Now, in case you have mind chatter about fit, thinking fit means fitted, it doesn't. The pieces you choose will flatter your body shape, which we'll get into more in the next step. But when we talk fit, we mean the shoulders hit right at our shoulders, or the pants hit at the perfect spot with the shoes that we have on, the sleeves hit right at our wrist, and so much more. Those are the fit issues we're talking about, not that everything fits like shrink wrap. Now, this isn't one of the four characteristics of career wear wardrobe that we're talking about, but maybe it should have been. You might have noticed in those pictures that they may show their legs, but rarely their bust. Everything collar-wise seems to be on the higher side. Now, I don't know what that says, and honestly, I'm not going to get into a big feminism conversation. At this point, we're making observations, deciding what we like, not necessarily judgments. Characteristic number two is quality basics with a twist. This is where the Ann Taylor comment pops up. Yes, they have basics. Are they quality? Sometimes. Are they memorable or different from what every other woman in the office has access to? No. And that right there is the key to up-leveling your wardrobe to senior leadership and the C-suite. Where and how we decide on that twist is where knowing your body shape becomes super important because the twist will likely equal accentuating a particular area of your figure. Now, in case you're new here, first of all, thank you so much for stopping by. I'm glad that you did. And as soon as this episode wraps, you'll want to hop on over to insidepetitle.com and take the petite body shape quiz. Now, in case you're thinking, I already know my body shape, I'm gonna go ahead and skip the quiz, you may want to reconsider because we look at body shape differently around here. No matter what all the popular nonsense says, you are not an apple, a pear, or anything else that belongs in a fruit salad. The petite body shape quiz is only seven questions and takes less than two minutes. Afterward, you'll know your exact best styles and even more important, the ones that will help you achieve the career wardrobe you've always wanted. And that means you'll leave the house every single day feeling super confident. Of course, I'll add the link to the show notes so you don't have to search. Okay, back to favorite feature and body shape. Let's start off with women who want to accentuate their waist as their favorite feature. And I have to say, Shiv Roy's costume designer did an unbelievably brilliant job with her clothing choices. She consistently had on paperbag waists, but in a subtle way, in a new more modern way than what we think of when we say paperbag waistbands. And I even blew up a couple so that you could see them close up. The other thing that they did brilliantly was always making sure that her pants were very high-waisted because she looks like she has a small waist to hip ratio, so that perfect fit really makes it stand out. Going back to characteristic, I think it was number one of let's focus on fit. The other thing is even when she wasn't wearing pants and she was wearing a dress, they would always pop on a belt, like in this picture, to make sure that her waist was still accentuated. So nicely done, and some great takeaways for you if your waist is your favorite feature. Let's touch on the other end of the spectrum, and that is when you're concerned about a pesky middle section. Here are perfect examples of pet plum blazers. That silhouette is brilliant when you want to draw attention somewhere else besides your waist. With all of these, you'll notice just like Shiv's paper waistbag pants, the styles are fresh and modern and definitely give you that style with a twist. Okay, let's talk about basics with a twist when your legs are your favorite feature. And woohoo, here are a couple of our very favorite petites. Lucy Lou, who is 5'3, and Victoria Beckham, who according to Google is 5'3 and a half. Now, of course, pencil skirts and sheath dresses are an option when you want to accentuate your legs. All these are very petite friendly as they hit just slightly above or just below your knee. Now, I wanted to highlight Lucy Lou's outfit choices from Elementary. Talk about classics with a twist. She absolutely nailed it. That pantsuit is probably the most quintessentially ideal suit for petites ever. And she touches on all four characteristics we're gonna talk about, but more on that in a bit. The pants are the perfect ankle length, the handbag is clean and structured, the blazer with the unique neckline, hence her twist, is cropped just above her hip bones, making her legs look way longer. And in all the images, the fit is perfect, and there's a twist, in this case, with the ties. Here are some crazy creative ways to up-level your career wear when your bust is your favorite feature. Now, we always talk about how emphasizing your favorite feature isn't about flashing a lot of skin or dressing like a Hoochie Mama. And there couldn't be a better example than Jessica in suits. The style twist at the necklines of her dresses and blazers draws attention but without flashing lots of cleavage. Now, here's a quick question for you. Having chatted about some ways to elevate the classics with your own personal style twist, did it get you to thinking? You know you're always welcome to pop it over because I love to celebrate your savvy style choices. Consideration number three, really think about color. Now, Steve Jobs was famous for wearing the exact same thing every day. I can't remember if he said it or I drumped it up or whatever, but either way, it cuts back on decision fatigue. Now, don't ask me who they are, but they say the average woman makes 60,000 decisions a day. Yes, you heard that right. 60,000. Now, not all of them are life-threatening or career-making. Some of them are do you want grape or raspberry jelly? Either way, humans only have so much brain power for decisions. And you definitely don't want to waste yours on does this blazer go with these pants or whatever. So the majority of executive clients choose a neutral palette. This means everything hanging in your closet goes together, hence, let's decisions. In case your position requires a lot of travel, this is especially helpful because you'll need to pack quickly or you want to pack a minimum of pieces. Now keep in mind neutral doesn't have to be boring, meaning it doesn't all have to be black, white, and gray unless you like that. The other thing to think about is monochromatic outfits. It's an incredibly powerful look, especially for petites, because it creates the illusion of length with that column of color. Have you noticed the accessories? Or rather the lack of, which leads us right into consideration number four. When everything else is a statement, anything more than a few understated classic accessories can be overkill. Not to say you can't or shouldn't, but definitely make sure that you're not distracting your audience with a big oversized handbag or a big statement necklace or bangles that clink and clank every time you move your arms. The one caveat to that is if you have a lot of virtual meetings, when that's the case, you can always add something of interest from the bust up so your outfit doesn't come across as boring or too simple based on the little screen size. Otherwise, stick to classic pointed toe heels, really structured handbags, diamond or pearl studs, and a classic watch. One other thing your brain might be whispering to you right about now is I still want to be approachable. Clients have shared that concern numerous times. And my first response is in my experience, women who are concerned about being approachable rarely have anything to be worried about. For a more practical tip though, you can always keep something soft at least at the beginning of your promotion or new position. So for example, it could be your lipstick, maybe versus choosing a bright red, go with a glossy pinkish brown. Or it could be your hair. Instead of flat ironing that perfectly precise bob, add a couple waves so it looks softer and then don't worry about it anymore. Do you know what time it is? Yep, it's time for this week's style challenge. First thing we want to do is ask ourselves, do we have a clear picture of what we want our new career wardrobe to say about us? If not, then check out the Petite Power Dressing board on Pinterest and think of a couple words that best describe your future style. After that, consider the four traits we talked about and which will have the biggest impact. Is it fit and from now on you're determined that you're going to only buy things that fit you perfectly or are able to be only slightly altered? Or it could be shopping at places other than Ann Taylor so that you can find classic pieces with a bit more interest so your wardrobe feels more modern. Or maybe you want to be more disciplined about the colors you buy from now on so that you have more mixing and matching options, and that packing for your next business trip is way easier. It might also be keeping your eye out for that perfect structured handbag or work tote that you've been needing. Whichever you decide, remember it's like the dessert course at Seasons 52. It's okay to start slow and pick and choose which of the characteristics that you best like.
