Anthony and John review and discuss the new Supergirl movie in the state of the DCU moving forward!
What's going on, guys? I am the Black Sheep Anthony C. And I am the big John V from South Carolina all the way to Cali. This is a super edition of One Take, real talk on one year of everything in pop culture. Actually, technically, we still got like a month left. Well, yeah, but this is the only time it's gonna work. Yeah, it is the only time it's gonna work. But yeah, man, it's it's it's a very special episode, guys, because coming up, we're hitting almost one year. Me and John have been doing this, and the first movie that brought this podcast together was Superman. And it's only right that we celebrate our one-year anniversary on the review on the review of Supergirl. So it's crazy to say it's been almost a year now. I know, right? It's crazy. And got tired of me. I'm telling you. So John just went and saw Supergirl today. Literally like an hour ago. And I saw Supergirl over the weekend. And yeah, I mean, if you if you've been living under a rock, you don't know what people are saying about this movie. Apparently, this movie is the worst thing that ever came out of DC, is the worst thing that ever came out of comic books. And I'm here to tell you that's completely 100% false.
SPEAKER_02John? Yeah, yeah, I I uh I've seen some bad movies, Anthony. Yeah, I've seen some bad movies, and I've seen some bad superhero movies.
SPEAKER_01It's true. This if this is your definition of bad, man, we got a strong baseline. Yeah, man. I mean, and here's the thing. Is it the strongest movie? No. I will say that. I said it in my TikTok review. It isn't the strongest movie. It isn't the greatest movie, but it's damn sure not the worst movie. I mean, it's an okay movie. It's not, it's not like I didn't, did I, did I dread watching this movie? No. I had actually a good time throughout the whole movie. There was, there's a lot of, to me, there's a lot of good things that happened in this movie. There's a lot of things that I would fix about this movie. John? Yeah, it's about where I'd land on it. This is one of the rare times you get a uh some ubiquity and what me and Anthony agree on. Yeah. So I told John what I thought about this movie. So we're not going to waste you guys time because we're going to be all over the place today about this movie and about where it compares and all this. So I told John before he went to go see the movie. We normally don't do this. When I left the theater, I called John and I told John, hey man, I think it's a solid seven. I thought it was a solid seven. And it's what? It's Monday. No, it's what? Monday your time, right, John? And it's Tuesday. It's Tuesday my time. And uh sitting with it, and then I started to think about it. And I started to think about it. John hasn't had as much time to sit with it as I did. So I started critiquing, like anything else, like, right? So I said, let me move it up to an eight and see what I get. Because I think I think this movie, it could be a 7.58, right? So I said, let me give it an eight and let me let me see, let me deduct everything negative from it. A 0.5. And I can only come up with two negative things. So I think the villain is very vanilla and very forgettable, right? I I'd agree with that, and we'll get into the bigger issue with that later. Okay. So I I deducted a 0.5 for that. That that'd be a that'd be what, a 7.5? Right there, yeah. Okay, took a 0.5 off. I took a 0.5 off. All right. And then I took another 0.5 off because of I feel like the last ending of this movie just drags. This movie, if this movie, I I dare say if this movie was just a hair shorter and a little bit better paced, I would give this movie an 8. I mean, dead serious. Like if we had a better villain, better paced, and I probably I would feel comfortable giving this movie like a 7.58. But because of the the like, you get that feeling of, damn, we're still here. Like, come on, let's wrap it up. You know what I'm saying? I had to duck, I had to deduct another point. All right, so that's that's that leaves me at a seven. Then I started thinking about the shots in this movie, and you know what I mean, like it's shot well, but then there's certain shots in this movie that just doesn't work for me. And and we'll touch on that in spoilers. And it's just, and so I deducted another half a point for that, and I landed at a 6.5. Now I don't know where John stands at, so I'm curious to hear John's critique. John, the floor is yours. I had to get my mind out the way just so before we start deep diving. So let me give you guys my comparison, right? We're comparing this to like when I'm hearing worst superhero movies of all time, we got a low floor, and and me and Anthony may just do a whole episode on this. Yeah, because this is a low floor.
SPEAKER_02Okay, I'm talking like X-Men Origins Wolverine. We're talking like Blade 3.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Blade 3, the blood clot. You got two, you got two fucking Venom movies. You got Craven. Even I will say this about Kraven. Uh action. That's I will say that. But it's it's still a trash movie. You still have Madame Webb, you got Amazing Spider Man, Amazing Spider-Man 2, you got Spider-Man 3. I think Spider-Man 3 is not that bad, but I'll defend it. We'll get back to that. I would defend, listen. I think this movie is better than Spider-Man 3, and I think this movie out of out of the creme de la creme of bad movies, Spider-Man 3 and Amazing Spider-Man are above a lot of those movies, I think. Personally, they're bright spots in those movies, right? Dare we say, John? Yeah, as far as like I said, we're we are talking like when me and Anthony are saying bad movies moving movies, we're talking the floor is like Green Lantern, yes, Batman and Robin. Yes. Like that's bad, bro. This is this is okay. Yeah, it's okay. It's not it's not a terrible movie. Like, if it's me and John, I'll tell you what, this is a perfect Sunday movie. Make sense.
SPEAKER_02Probably, yeah. I mean, I'm not mad at that.
SPEAKER_01Like, um, it's yeah, like if it's a Sunday and got nothing to watch, I'll pop it in. All right, so I started to think like what movies this in the MCU and movies we've seen in the past that this compares to, right? So for me, for me personally, I think it's right along with it's the perfect second movie, like with Ed Norton's Hulk. I think it's right along there. I think where the Hulk beats this out at is the Hulk is like perfectly paced. You know what I mean? And the Hulk has a better villain. Makes sense. Yeah, and I I'll be fair. I need to rewatch. It's been a long time since I've seen that. Okay. So I'll put this up there with the Hulk. I'll put this up here with what's my boy? Sifu? Not Sifu. What's my boy? With the ring, 10 rings.
SPEAKER_02Oh, oh, uh not sure.
SPEAKER_01Oh man, if you wouldn't have said it. I know. No, no, man. Damn. That's we are terrible. We're not doing this movie any any justice. Shang-Chi. There we go. Yeah, yeah. We're racist. But uh, but I'll put it, I'll put it up here with Shang-Chi. I th I'll put it up with Shang-Chi. I I mean, like, I think Shang-Chi, and this is like beat for beat, brown about like the same type of movie. You got, I think it it's you have some beautiful set pieces. You have you have a movie that moves forward, but the villain isn't very, you know what I'm saying? Is it very memorable? You know, and and the movie will probably benefit for being a little bit shorter. I'll put it up there with movies. I know a lot of people are gonna give me flack for this. And for me, I don't really care for this movie. But if you ask me, is it a bad movie? I'll say no. A lot of people hold this movie with high regard. I think it's right there with the first Doctor Strange. Like, I don't really, I think, but if you ask me which one is better, then I'll say Doctor Strange, even though I don't really care for Doctor Strange, the first movie. Like, that is just not my type of movie. It's just whatever. I'll and I like the character Doctor Strange. Stop me if I'm lying, John. I'm just saying, just stop me if I'm I'm I'm reaching, is what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_02I mean, like, nothing you've said.
SPEAKER_01Maybe the first Doctor Strange is a little bit better than this, but like, I still don't think that's a crazy high bar. Like, but like, I think people are too, I think this is better than Iron Man 2. I think it's better than Iron Man 3. I think it's better than Thor of the Dark World. I think it's better than the first Thor. I think this is better. I think this is better than what a lot of people are giving it. And I think the problem is coming off of Superman and seeing how bright and how colorful and how happy. And you know what I'm saying? The tone was that we got here, and and and here's the thing. And here's and this is I said in my in my review that this movie will be looked back in the future. People look back on this movie a lot fonder because they're not gonna be comparing it. Yeah, you don't get it. Like, if you if you're comparing it to Superman, you're doing it all wrong because she's not Superman in the movie. And then this hurl, like, dude, this movie is is literally what Supergirl embodies. It's it's is it's dark. It is not dark, is in the sense it's not the dark night. No, don't get me there, but it's darker than Superman, right? But like, even if we're comparing it, like, okay, let's let's be fair, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, me and Anthony have this rule where we like to compare things to their contemporaries.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So if we're comparing it to its contemporaries, we've got creature commandos, this, the first superman, the suicide squad, peacemaker. Am I forgetting Peacemaker season two specifically, but yeah. I think I think that's all that we got so far. James Gunn has been a been head of DC. That's why that's another type of subject, total subject that I'm literally is a conspiracy theory that I'm working on. And it seemed like this man is giving me nothing but ammo, bro. Currently, yeah. But okay, I think we'll be generous. Okay, let's be generous with that. To its contemporaries, yes, this is probably the worst thing. Worse, yes, yes, this is the worst thing that DC has turned out yet. It's worse than Creature Commandos, it's worse than season two of Peacemaker, it's worse than Suicide Squad, and it's worse than damn Superman. But let's not, but how worse is it? Is what I'm saying. Again, if this is the baseline, I I can't be mad at what you're saying because like this is fine, this is okay. Now, look, look, this is not as good as Superman, right? And like, let's let's be fair, right? I don't think this is good as Superman. I don't think it's fair to compare this to Superman because it's not trying to be Superman, which is where people need to start moving the moving the needle. Exactly. So, like, my thing is this right here. The thing about this movie is Kara having an identity crisis and celebrating her birthday and not feeling like she belongs.
SPEAKER_03And everybody's been there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but like, bro, if you think about this movie, it does not belong. Like, it literally feels like the redheaded stepchild of the DCU. And it's it's a work, like, bro, like I said, and and like maybe I'm looking at it too abstract, maybe I'm looking too on the nose. Maybe we're being too generous and it's garbage. Yeah, but I'm telling you, dude, there's there's some there's some bright spots about this movie. Like, dude, the all, all, all of the damn Krypton shit, bro. Oh my god. All of the Krypton stuff. Like, everything on the Krypton, listen. If you okay, John, before we move forward, what do you rate this movie?
SPEAKER_02This is what's good, bro.
SPEAKER_01Hold on, hold on, hold on, slow down, slow down, slow down, slow down. I'm losing you. What'd you say? I said, man, I'm going with my heart here. This is like a firm, strong six. Okay. I gave it a 6.5, John gave it a six. I and this that's not a bad fucking movie. It's above mid. It's above mid. Now someone's gonna be like, but John gave fucking scary movie of four. So you're saying this is only two points more than that. But look though, all right, anyway. If you gave me the reins, right? And this is this is what I was saying during the whole thing. I told my wife the same thing. I said they should have put all the Krypton stuff in the beginning. So, guys, spoiler alert slightly, they put they they spurse it out through the movie, right? They spurse it out through the movie, they should have put it at the beginning of the movie. And I I would I wouldn't have done this if you were gonna run with this story, right? Say you wanted to run with this story, I would have ran with this story as a TV show. That's how I would have ran with this story. I would have ran with this story as a TV show. You know what I'm saying? I would I would I would have made this a series for this story. But if you would have given me the reins to do a super girl movie, call it cliche, whatever it may have you, I would have started it right at the end of Superman. You know what I would have done? I would have started it right there, where she walked around that corner, right? And she would have fell passed out, drunk, right? And Clark was like, sometimes I just don't understand her, you know what I mean, whatever. And then she sits there with Clark, and and the whole movie would have been about her not being able to fit, not feeling like she fit in it. I would have started the whole movie with Krypton, and then I would have started it right there where Clark finds her in the sphere. I would have done the whole thing about her learning how to speak English. You know what I'm saying? I would have made this a character study. Call it cliche. Call it cliche. Fish out of water, it never fucking fails. I would have did a, I would have did some type of like Superman is, she has to say Superman. Okay, I can live with that. And I'll tell you why I can live with that, Anthony. Because the dog is more famous than the star of the movie. Yeah. And and and but see, the thing is, you and this is why I got this this damn theory, and I love James Gunn, but I got this theory that he's trying to sabotage his job at fucking DC because like, bro, you do not start your second movie with Supergirl. Not saying Supergirl isn't popular, but bro, you gotta build a bigger fan base for Supergirl. You got to. And and like, dude, I literally, like, dude, if you do, like, here's the thing. You don't go total fucking galactic CGI for Supergirl. You keep it grounded in the minimal CGI as possible, right? Kara go ahead. It's just people gotta remember, right? And Anthony, you and me have talked about this.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, supergirl, Kara, whatever you want to call her, right?
SPEAKER_01Superman in the whole thing, is any version of her story, she's not Superman, she's not trying to be Superman, she's not trying to be like Clark, and that's always been the the bit of the banner they had there. There, that's always been the shit, is because they're different and because they do things from a different idecracy, yeah. So, like I said, I would have done a TV show and I would have done everything that from Krypton, right? And I would have did everything, you know what I'm saying? I would have did all that shit, right? And you know, did the whole character study. I would have done it as a series, right? So people could get to know her and see her learn and you know, and navigating through, you know what I mean, like learning to live on Earth. After you build a fan base, then you do this movie. I would have shot that. I would have shot that while we were shooting Superman. I'd be down for that. I think as soon as Superman came out, right? Hype for Superman's Dying Down, November, because Superman had the summer, right? Come fall, Supergirl on the TV show. All right. Then you go into this summer with Supergirl the movie. If critics and fucking fans are showing interest, you had no basis of anything knowing that a supergirl movie would work outside of the first thing that super is in her name. That's it. And that they're wearing a similar costume, so yeah. I mean, and and like granted, I love that girls have a superhero that isn't Wonder Woman, that isn't fucking Black Widow and whoever. I ain't even gonna mention Captain Marvel, but anyway, to damn look up to. I I am, and and like they deserve all the superhero that there are great superhero women, superheroes out here that they could be adapted. But here's the thing, bro, you gotta lay the foundation. 90, 80 to 90 percent of your fans are male. You have to plant the seed for them to fill the seats. You get what I'm saying? So you gotta plant the seeds, bro. Like, people aren't just gonna pile in to go see this movie. I went to see this movie, dude. There were 10 people in my theater. Six of them was with me. Ouch. Ai, caramba. Luckily, but here's the thing people are calling this movie a flop, right? People calling this movie a flop. So the movie is grossing the movie has about a budget of about like 170, right? And they spent about 120 on marketing. So about 290 dollars, 290 million. They need about six. What do they need to do to break even, right? I think I think about 500, 500, 600 million.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, about like just for the movie, right? You know, so let's let's call it 600, right? Let's go, let's go on the high end, right? Yeah, I believe this movie's only at like 60 million right now.
SPEAKER_01This no the to break even, they need 375 million dollars. This movie's not doing that.
SPEAKER_02No, it's not. This movie's doing it. This is the thing, man.
SPEAKER_01People are gonna hear us say this, and they're gonna be like, oh, you guys just don't like Supergirl, you guys don't like the DC Universe, like, you know, real fans would wanna know, bro. Do you think, like, honestly, to anyone who thinks that. Do you guys think we don't want Supergirl to do good? Dude, I would love Supergirl. I would bro, if this movie would have opened up with a hundred and something million dollars, I would have been ecstatic. Anthony, I love Nightwing. You know Nightwing is my favorite DC character. But he would have heart of hearts, man. You know, no, he's not gonna do Nightwing would be lucky to do 62 million in a weekend.
SPEAKER_02Nightwing would be lucky to get a movie.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Right? Like, I'm still banking on the fact that you guys are gonna hope that this is like a Batman movie. Dude, here's the thing. Here's the thing. We got a supergirl movie before we even got a whiff of a Batman script. Listen, listen, listen before we got a Wonder Woman movie. Listen, though, we got a supergirl movie before we got even Robert Pat's Batman. And that was successful, John. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So this is what I'm saying. This should have been a show. This this would have been a great show. In the same vein as fucking as Peacemaker. Like, dude, how do you do this as a movie, but give Green Lanterns a show?
SPEAKER_02And look, look, like Anthony, this this is an argument that I can make right now. If we pull up the Justice League, not counting Superman, Wonder Woman, or Batman. Okay? Just the Justice League.
SPEAKER_01I guarantee you, four people know who Aquaman is, know who Cyborg is, know who Green Lantern is, know who even like Martian Manhunter or The Flash are.
SPEAKER_02Like, I'm not saying you've got to do a Batman movie. I'm not saying you've got to do a Wonder Woman movie. But like, you could do a Green Arrow movie. You want to go a little more niche, you want to go a little more off. You could do, you know, this buddy cop Green Lantern movie.
SPEAKER_01Like, there's some options here if you want to diversify and do things that are a little different. I'm okay with that. But don't lock yourself into this mindset of I well. So I asked Google. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cut you off. Go ahead, go ahead. I was gonna say, but don't lock yourself into this mindset of, well, Guardians worked once, so it'll happen again. But Guardians had a foundation that was established. You gotta think Guardians was in what phase three? Phase four when the Guardians one happened? Something like that? I think it was two or three. Exactly. So hear me out. So I asked Google, I said, who is the most popular Justice League member that isn't Batman, Wonder Woman, or Superman? You wanna know what number one answer is? The Flash? It's the Flash. You wanna know what number two is? Probably Green Lantern. Green Lantern. Green Lantern. You wanna know who number three is? Aquaman. Aquaman. You wanna know who number four is? I mean Martian Manhunter? There you go. Who's number five, John? Hawkman or Hawk Girl? No, Cyborg. Oh, Cyborg. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Bro, you had five options.
SPEAKER_02And relatively popular.
SPEAKER_01Relatively popular. You had five options with huge fan base that would have filled theaters before you and you landed on Supergirl. And guys, please don't think like we hate Supergirl. It's just the wrong timing. I'm not saying Supergirl didn't deserve a movie. I'm not saying that Supergirl isn't good. The thing is, bro, when a character doesn't have a strong fan base, not saying she doesn't have fans, not saying she doesn't have a following. But compared to those names I just read, her fan base isn't on that same level. If you're not going to do the core three, you could have, I mean, and we didn't, nobody wants a Flash movie right now. Flash is tainted. You are so you could have just swapped lanterns with Supergirl. Supergirl could have got the show, and lanterns could have got the movie. Like it doesn't make sense. Like, make it make sense. You shelved two, no, slash that, three of the most popular characters in all of comic. Because you had three lanterns that you're gonna use for the show. You're gonna use them for the fucking movie. Like, Anthony, I don't think you know about this. You're not working on a Booster Gold movie, yeah. Why? Who the fuck knows who Booster Gold is? And like, okay, let me let me do a better point.
SPEAKER_02Right?
SPEAKER_01Me and Anthony are not your average comic book, like not your average like superhero movie goers, right? We've got a little more knowledge than your average comic book goer, or your average moviegoer, I mean, about these characters.
SPEAKER_02I didn't know who Kerr was, I didn't know who Rudy was. One, not only was I not excited to see these characters, but two, as a comic book fan, I didn't know who these people were.
SPEAKER_01You didn't care about them. Like, dude, and then like this movie didn't give a lot of time for things to breathe. You know what I mean? For a lot of opportunities for things in this movie to breathe. We're not gonna touch on too many sports, but I'm seeing. And then, and then I'll tell you another thing. Tell me they don't do the tell me they don't do the supergirl moment too many times.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there's too many moments of her, oh, well, she's finally accomplished it.
SPEAKER_01She's finally supergirl now. Yeah, and it's just too many times. They they it's just too many times of shine, like, bro, it's my same argument about uh segue in here, but it's my same argument about gear two for Luffy. You you did it a little too early. With no real build up. Yeah, if you just if you just saved it, it would have been a little bit more special. And look, I'm not saying that this can't work. I'm not saying Supergirl can't work, but we need to restructure the pieces of the building blocks here. Let's let me let me tell you this. I'm gonna give you, I'm gonna give you an I okay. I'm gonna pull away here, right? Let me give you some characters that could have got that could have led you further into the DCU without being from the Justice League. Can I do that, John? That would have put asses in seats. Can I do that, John? Go for it. Yeah, yeah. Feel free. Feel free. Okay. I would have had, I would, if you didn't want to go strictly straight, all right. I would have did, because it's already been confirmed that this guy's gonna replace this role in the DCU, or he's interested in it. Keanu Reeves coming back as Constantine in the DCU as your second movie. That would have put asses in C. Yeah. That would have put asses in seeds. Like they're serious. Constantine's not that like popular. It's not that popular, but popular. But you have but you have Keanu Reeves tied to the project. People are gonna show up just because of him now. Yeah, I was gonna say, yeah. Dude's career. Dude's career is iron fucking hot more than it probably was in the 90s. And then now we live in this era where, like, dude, bro, look, I love, I guess a little bit of a spoiler here, guys, but not like manager. They they they use different types of suns. Yeah. To effector them, which is cool, right? I like that because I'm like, hey, you know, like that was not something I was expecting to see in this movie, right? Again, as a fan of what's but they they tie it in from super superman. She goes to Red Suns to get drunk, you know what I'm saying, because she because at alcohol doesn't metabolize under a yellow sun and all that good stuff. But go ahead.
SPEAKER_02But it's it's you know, it it's so cool to to finally see things like this. But dude, you're telling me that now is the time we need to do this?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't know, man. It's like I said, this it's not like so I think this is just my biggest, my biggest, my biggest takeaway from this whole thing is just it's just not perfect timing. That's all it is. It's uh it's the wrong time in the wrong place. Like not saying this movie, oh my god, no, no, it's not like that. It's just you didn't give you didn't do right by Supergirl. You get what I'm saying? You didn't give Supergirl enough build-up, due diligence, foundation, whatever you may have you, to end a strong enough movie.
SPEAKER_02You fucked her all the way around. Yeah, I I I agree with that. Yeah, I mean, like it's just it's so hard to be okay with like I'm shooting her in the foot because it's like, damn, bro, like this is how we're treating your second movie in the verse. Yeah, what are we gonna do when oh god, wait the clayface drop in October? And clayface is going to get Street Fighter, and and what God willing, I won't see Clayface do well, guys.
SPEAKER_01Like, I don't necessarily know if you're but here's the thing, but here's the thing, but here's the thing though, John. Who the fuck is calling for a clayface movie? No one, no one, no one. And I love I'm a Batman fan. I am a Batman fan. I love Clayface. Who the fuck asked for a clayface movie? That they that the first name, that the first name, what I'm saying is that the first name isn't James and the last name isn't Gunn.
SPEAKER_02Well, Anthony, correct me on this if I'm wrong. Okay, correct me on this if I'm wrong, okay?
SPEAKER_01I think you would need to have off the cuff discussed a couple villains we'd like to see get uh get movies from D from DC. Yeah. Well, like, bro, but listen, not saying that Clayface is gonna be a bad movie, but bro, you gotta know that you're trying to cater to fucking audiences. And I don't know, man. I don't know about you, but I don't know if Clayface is the first Batman villain I'm pulling. No, bro, like, bro, penguin just came red hot off a fucking movie, bro. I mean, off a TV show.
SPEAKER_02And he had a movie. Yes. Right.
SPEAKER_01Like he had a movie to hype himself up and give him that opportunity. Yes. Colin Farrell, who is, I believe, Oscar nominated. Don't quote me. Bro, all I'm saying is, dude, I'm I'm I'm I'm gonna say it. Fuck it. James Gunn's a sleeper cell for Marvel.
SPEAKER_02Low key at this point.
SPEAKER_01He's a sleeper cell for Marvel, dude. Like, dude, I'm not saying you're shot you're intentionally sabotaging this shit, but bro, you gotta show me a little more that you're not. Because, like, dude, you there's no listen, bro, and then you're telling me that the fourth movie in the DCU is gonna be Superman again.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Like, and I need you just to like, look, man, I'm not tripping if you don't do like a Batman movie tomorrow.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna be. Because, like, there's so many fucking characters that deserve the shit before Supergirl. Dude, I'm sorry. I got promised a Batman Brave in the Bowl. I haven't even got a Batman announced. Like, bro, okay, okay. Look, let's, let's, let's, let's play this game, Anthony. Let's play this game. Bro, we got GTA 6 before fucking Batman got announced.
SPEAKER_03That's that's I mean, to be fair, GTA 6 is a fake game, but that's a conversation for another day.
SPEAKER_02You're fucking telling me, Anthony. You're fucking telling me. Okay, you said Batman Brave and the Bold?
SPEAKER_01We don't have a Batman cast. Exactly. It fucking exactly. They been a few. We don't even have a Batman fucking teaser. We don't have a joke. We don't have nothing. Like, you're telling me you can't write a Batman joke in a DC movie? Let me ask you a question. Who the fuck cast all these Batman villains before you cast Batman? That was look, man. You cast Clay, you cast Clayface, you've cast Dr. Phosphorus, you've cast fucking Frankenstein, you've cast all these other motherfuckers, you've cast Peacemaker, you cast all these other motherfuckers, you ain't cast not us, you ain't cast Alfred yet. I want, I think his name is Tom Rise Harris, the guy who's gonna be playing Clayface. Right. Look, bro, I want this dude to do well, I want him to bring in a fire performance, I want this horror movie to do well, I want Clayface to be exciting and different, but I can't expect that if it's a character no one gives a shit about like okay, Anthony, let me go an extra mile. This is a clayface fucking movie they got coming out, right? We got a clayface movie coming out. How many people know how many different versions of clayface you are?
SPEAKER_02Oh, you know what? Here, how about I do another one for you? What's clayface's secret identity? Are you asking? Yeah, I'm asking.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I don't fucking know. No, no, okay. So the Batman fanatic, the self-handed. I know he's an actor. I know he's an actor. I know that. One of us is an actor. I know that. I forgot his name. John something, I think. Or Hank or something. It's one of the motherfuckers. I looked it up for you. It's Matt Haynes, by the way. Yeah, yeah, whatever. Same shit. But bro, here's the thing. Bro, you could have gave us a Mr. Freeze. You could have gave us a fucking, you could have gave us something. Like, bro, I'm not saying that Playface isn't gonna be a good movie. I just don't think nobody's gonna show up for it. And that's the same problem we got with Supergirl. Yeah, I just don't, I just don't think nobody's gonna show up for it. And look, like again, this is something me and Anthony were talking about. If I at least knew who these characters were, right? If I had like an idea of what I'm walking into, maybe, but it's hard for me to be at all interested when even a comic book fan doesn't know. And you know the biggest problem with this with this universe the lack of the handmarks, the lack of the universe. There's no identity here, bro. Yeah there's no identity in this universe, there's none. It feels like a Superman movie. No, not even that. Not even that, bro. Tell me, tell me. Even though you saw him in the Superman movie, tell me that fucking Peacemaker feels like it's in the same universe as Superman. No. Even though you saw Rick Flag in Peacemaker, tell me it felt like the same Rick Flag from Creature Commandos. No, not really, no. Okay, that's all I'm saying. I mean, but even then, bro, look, like, I'm not asking every movie. I I I I've gotten some flack for this, but I do stand by my point. I don't think every fucking interconnected universe needs every movie to be interconnected. But here's the thing.
SPEAKER_02I was actually kind of hoping.
SPEAKER_01When James Gunn came out and said every movie, every TV show, every video game is gonna, this is gonna be the biggest expanded universe of all time. Why the fuck did he say that? We just want movies, man. That's all we want you to do. Turn out some movies and TV shows. That's all we fucking want you to do. Yeah, look, I love I love the ambition. I love like the adulation that he has for comic books. I don't really fucking need it, bro. Well, we don't. I don't need that's what I'm saying. Dude is a dude is a fucking sleeper sale, bro. We got, bro, Paramount has just bought Warner Brothers, and I'm scared that this shit's about to get rebooted again. Yeah, and and guys, like we're not trying to give you these scathing comments with no purpose. Like, bro, like dead serious. Like, I'm dead ass serious. I'm scared this shit's about to get rebooted again. I'm about to, I'm about to just give up on D. I love DC, but I'm about to just give up on the whole DC theater run it. Like, I'm gonna go see Clayface in October, but I'm seriously doubting that damn right now, if that shit tanks, you might want to say goodbye to the man of tomorrow. They might release it to make their money back, but you might want to just say goodbye to the whole DCU, bro. I mean, honestly, yeah, at this point. There's no fucking, there's no, like, bro, he's like fucking Jack Sparrow in fucking in Pirates of the Caribbean with the compass. It's like he has no heading. There's no direction that we're going. Say what you want. Say what you want about the MCU. Say what you want about Kevin Feige. There's a direction. They have a heading. They know where land is. Is it perfect? No. But they know where they're going. Like shit, bro. We bro, listen. Listen, they might not have a blade movie, but hey, they got blade, they got two blades.
unknownDamn.
SPEAKER_01Damn. That's all I'm saying. They got two blades. We ain't got we got one Batman, and he's supposed to be Else World.
SPEAKER_02That's tough.
SPEAKER_01I mean, like, at least you got the best Batman, but you know, you really don't. Because like, even Matt Reeves has said, like, that's gonna be its own verse.
SPEAKER_02Like, that's gonna be its own thing. Right, okay, cool.
SPEAKER_01You know, but fuck, dude. Like, how is that helping anything? Not helping shit at all, brother. It's not helping nothing. That's what I'm saying. It's not helping a damn thing. Just like the action in this movie is whatever. Yeah, like, dude, the action, like, and that's that's like one of the things, like it's shot, like I don't know. It's sometimes it looked good, sometimes it looks like shit. Like dead ass here. It's a 50 50. Like, Mobo looks great. Too bad he's, you know, barely in the fucking movie. Yeah. I mean, like, dude, the movie is not bad, but like, and I feel like I'm tearing, like, but like, I'm just telling you what I don't like about the movie is just it doesn't deserve the hate that is. Getting, but like, bro, by no means is this a fucking masterpiece. This is yeah, there's and like a lot of the issues don't even necessarily come from the movie itself, but like the structure in what this movie is getting fucking released in, the structure in which this fucking movie is getting explained.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Uh like, okay, man.
SPEAKER_01And you know, like, I've heard some people turning around and call this like the greatest superhero movie of all time. It's not bad either. Who the fuck said that? No, I'm not gonna lie, man. Need to get them on. I'm about to say, hey, you better get get them motherfuckers an MRI. Like, shit, they got a short circuit. Like, fuck, bro. I wanna like this movie. I went into it wanting to like it, John. I like okay, here's this thing. Okay. I like this movie.
SPEAKER_02Don't love it. There's a difference. Yeah. Is that fair?
SPEAKER_01It's just okay. Yeah, it's just okay. Like I literally said in my review, it's okay. It's okay. It's nothing special. Okay. It's scrambled eggs in the morning with salt and pepper. It's just okay. You're not you're not missing anything. You're not losing anything, Hater. No. But and but here's the thing. It does its job as far as character development, but that's all. And even then, like part of the issue here is this movie's not super original. No, but my thing is the things that it does well, it does really well. The Krypton stuff, the the herb character development, and you know I mean, seeking her purpose. But like then you got you got shit that it doesn't do well. And I think it's a 50-50, it's a 50-50 scale, man. It's very balancing the shit that it does well and the shit that it doesn't do well. The only problem is it's smeared in the shit that it doesn't do well.
SPEAKER_02Like, okay, you you you shit the bed, right? Just admit you shit the bed, bro. Yeah, but like, it didn't work. I'm sorry, James Guyne. It's okay.
SPEAKER_01Just bro, I'm gonna tell you right now. I don't know what the hell. Let me see if we got playface. Playface is slated for October 23rd. Looks great. It does. Said the same thing about Supergirl. And I'm gonna tell you what else I said about Supergirl. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. Damn. Well, I've said my piece, Anthony. Is there anything you wanna?
SPEAKER_01I'm not gonna lie, we haven't really talked about the movie quite as much as I thought we were going to. I mean, like, dude, there's nothing and that's does that say about the movie? It's very okay. Yeah, like does that speak about the movie? Like, it's it's okay. Like, it's okay. Like, it's not, is it's very one note, very bland. I mean, it's not I hate to say the word bland. I'm gonna say like this. If you watch the trailer, it's gonna have you expanding some Guardians of the Galaxy shit. It's not that. It's not that by far. I'm gonna tell you the biggest, you know the biggest thing that bothered me? Alright? There's a scene where there's a big ass fight going on, and Kara loses someone, right? She loses him. She's flying above the city and she's looking for him, correct? You remember that scene, John? You know what I'm talking about? Yeah, when when uh the like the first throwdown. It's like the real big throwdown after she gets poisoned. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. All right, she's looking for him, right? And you could say she's nerfed or whatever, or she doesn't have x-ray vision. All right, I'll take either one of those answers. And then in the third act, what does she use, John? X-ray vision. Okay, that's all I'm saying. When she's nerfed.
SPEAKER_02Thank you. What about this? What about this, Anthony? What about the fact that crypto is a more notable character than her?
SPEAKER_01John, you ain't you gotta let this go.
SPEAKER_02I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Crypto has three fucking movies.
SPEAKER_01I was just saying, dude, you gotta let this go, dude. You gotta let it go. I can't, bro. I can't let it go. You gotta let this go, dude. You gotta let it go. But yeah, man, I mean, I don't know, man. I like whatever. Yeah, like the fights are just the fights are something I do like about the movie. I like Millie Alcock. Yeah, I'm about to say, I like Millie Alcock. I think she's a standout, I think she's a wonderful supergirl. But the fights are just like a bunch of shit going on. They really are. They're kind of like One Piece fights, honestly. Uh, you took the words right out of my mouth. You know, guys, I promise we like One Piece. Uh, but I mean, hey, but anyway, but guys, yeah, I mean, like, dude, I wish we had more the report back from the movie. I mean, like, dude, the movie's not bad. I I know it's we just hate that they didn't support this movie enough. That's my biggest gripe problem. And this movie could have been great with a lot of more support and a lot more preparation. It could have been great. This movie, this movie could have been an eight. This movie could have wow critics, but the reason it did it is because James Gunn is a sleeper cell. He's sabotaging fucking DC. Yeah, yeah, he's he's a he's the sleeper agent. We were all tricked, guys. Yeah. But guys, if me and John don't wake up tomorrow, you know who did it, James Gunn. Yes, I'm sorry. Yeah. John would be first. He lives in LA.
SPEAKER_02If we don't, if uh if we don't wake up tomorrow, I can't say this.
SPEAKER_01Anthony, we can almost celebrate one year. That's right. Well, a little prematurely. A little prematurely. I know, right? I mean, I just wish this had the same effect on us that the first Superman did? Superman did, yeah. I really wish this had the same effect. I think he's got the castings. He's at least got that. Jason Momoa's Lobo, fantastic. Even if he's barely in the movie. But you want to do but you want to know what we can celebrate our first year with, though, John, this year? Our next review? No, I but but I'm saying, do you want to know what movie is gonna be our first year review? Don't look it up. I'm gonna tell you. I'm gonna tell you. To the date. You want me to tell you? I don't know. What could it be? Evil Dead Burns. Comes out exactly one year. Yeah. Comes out exactly one year, Superman been. I didn't realize that. Yeah, Superman came out July 11th, and Evil Dead Burn comes out July 10th. I think July 10th, July 9th.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's so good. Yeah, July 10th. Yeah, so we get Evil Dead Burn, guys, will be our one-year anniversary episode. Yeah. And if you know anything about me and John, that's our collectively favorite horror franchise. Yeah, I'm so excited. I mean, yeah. But guys, have you seen Supergirl? If you have, let us know what you think. And if you haven't, go see it. And uh let us know what you think. And this has been another painfully uh super edition of One Take Real Talk, and it was all in one take. One shot, just like James Gunn. And we always keep it real. Peace. Peace.
