Toy Story is one of those movies everyone thinks they remember, until you rewatch it and realize it’s sharper, funnier, and a lot more complicated than you gave it credit for. We go back to 1995 and talk about how Pixar’s first feature became the first fully computer animated film, helped redefine animation, and somehow still holds up even when we start poking at the “toy logic” a little too hard.

We unpack the real engine of the story: Woody’s jealousy when Buzz Lightyear shows up and instantly becomes Andy’s new favorite. That rivalry turns into one of the most relatable friendship arcs in family movies, especially once Buzz hits his identity crisis and Woody has to step up in a way that actually matters. Along the way we get into the best set pieces, from the green army men birthday recon mission to Pizza Planet’s claw machine aliens, plus the stuff that hits differently as an adult, like how fast the toys turn on Woody and how wild Sid’s house still feels.

We also zoom out into Pixar’s bigger legacy, the franchise’s box office track record, and our running debate over whether Toy Story 5 is a lock for a billion dollars. Then we rate Toy Story across plot and writing, acting and casting, production and visuals, music and sound, and cultural impact. There’s even a Malachi Talk mini-segment with a kid’s-eye take on the creepiest moments and the best parts.

If you enjoy movie reviews, Pixar deep dives, and honest nostalgia that still calls out the weird stuff, subscribe, share the episode with a friend, and leave a review. What’s your score for Toy Story, and did Woody deserve the heat?

Welcome And Toy Story Setup

SPEAKER_06

Hello and welcome to the Real Talk and Banter Podcast, the movie podcast where we discuss and review films that are at least a decade old. I'm Omari Williams.

SPEAKER_03

I'm Jay Richardson.

SPEAKER_06

A lot of energy today because we are discussing Toy Story, the original 1995 computer animated pioneer film Toy Story. Yeah, come on now.

SPEAKER_03

You gotta brand me.

SPEAKER_06

Yes, you do. Yes, we do. I put some stank on it. It's not Oh, that's because that's exactly what that song was missing. Some stank. Randy Newman is rolling around his grave.

SPEAKER_03

You know what? I thought this man was still alive. I'll be honest.

SPEAKER_06

No. Oh, I'm pretty sure he is. I just said that.

SPEAKER_03

Oh my god. Why you just kill him off like that?

SPEAKER_06

I didn't kill him off. I mean, his fricative grave. I don't know. Whatever. Alright. Man, this movie is so iconic. It's so I don't even know how to introduce it.

SPEAKER_02

He's definitely still alive.

SPEAKER_06

It does. It does. I know he's alive. I knew he's alive. I was just saying that. Alright. I mean, you you put a stank on his freaking most popular song might kill him off, though. So hey. Oh my gosh. Listen, you know when they say, oh, this person or this whatever doesn't need any introduction. That's that's it with Toy Story. If you don't know Toy Story, well, lucky you, we're about to put you up on some game.

Why Toy Story Matters Historically

SPEAKER_06

Here's some quick hitters. Notable facts before we get into it. I think this might be common knowledge, I'm not sure, but this is the first entirely computer animated film ever. Right? And this is the first Pixar film. You knew that. Yes, both things, did you?

SPEAKER_02

I knew it was the first Pixar film. I did not know it was the first complete complete computer generated film at all.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, well, oh, well, damn. Yeah, it is. Yeah, it's it has the accolades for that. There were like some short stories before this, you know. But as far as a feature-length film being totally and entirely computer animated, this this was this was the film to do that. It it set the record for the highest grossing opening film that weekend, and it became the second highest grossing film of 1995. I'm not gonna make you guess, but it was behind Die Hard with a Vengeance. This film was nominated for three Academy Awards original screenplay. This is the first animated film to actually receive this nomination. It was also nominated for the best original song, You've Got a Friend in Me, and then the Best Original Score. So Pixar, everybody knows Pixar to be synonymous with Disney. They said Disney, Disney, Pixar. It's two different studios. Disney owns Pixar now, but that didn't happen until 2006. I am gonna do my best not to make this a Pixar pod because all the stuff behind this is very fascinating. But John Lassiter and Brad Bird and them, when they had left, we talked about under we talked about them on the Fox and the Hound episode, how they left Disney. Well, Pixar, Pixar, well no, we didn't talk about sorry, we talked about Don Blut leaving. But eventually Lassiter and them left as well, and they formed Pixar. It was a subsidiary of Lucasfilms under a different name, and then eventually became its own independent thing, and it did so for several years. They started doing movie releases with Disney. There was some contentious contract things here and there, and then eventually Disney was able to purchase them. Like Disney's trying to do purchase everything in our lives, and now you have Disney Pixar, you know, starting from 2006. So Pixar has made 30 movies and they have earned collectively 17 billion dollars. Nice collectively. That is an average gross of 589 million dollars per film.

SPEAKER_03

From the way you're talking about, I can tell that you are a big Pixar fan.

SPEAKER_06

I am. Are you not?

SPEAKER_02

Pixar is great. Pixar is great.

SPEAKER_06

Oh no, I am. And that's why I said I'm not gonna make it a Pixar pod because like the whole business thing, like that part excites me as well, in addition to the quality and output of films, you know. And I mean they have to be one of the greatest animation studios ever, just hands down.

Pixar Billion Dollar Sequels Trivia

SPEAKER_06

Which leads us to our first, our only trivia question of the day. There are five Pixar movies which have grossed over one billion dollars. Can you name those five movies? I will give you hints. I will give you hints. Alright, all five movies are sequels, none of them is the original in the franchise. Okay. The first movie came out in 2010, and then after 2010, 2016, 20. So there's newer-ish kind of movies, like none of the 90s movies, of course, made a billion dollars. Biggest hint uh two of the movies are sequels in this franchise that we're discussing. So that's a give me, but you still gotta guess which two. Yep.

SPEAKER_03

I guess toy story four.

SPEAKER_06

That's correct. Yeah, they the days gave it gave it away, yeah. So Toy Story Three and Toy Story Four both gross over a billion dollars. The other three movies, again, there are sequels. One one of the movies has deals with underwater life. That's correct. And one is an action movie with a base with a family. Yep, and then the last one came out in 2024. Yeah. This one a very interesting concept dealing with emotions. Oh wow, okay, yeah. You said ah, and then you went quiet. Oh my god. Inside out too. I was like, uh I almost said emotions, but I was like, that's not right. Yeah. Yeah, so those five movies, and those are numbered in some of the highest grossing movies ever. Actually, 13 of Pixar's films are in the 50 highest grossing animated films of all time. Very successful studio, and it all started with this film right here, Toy Story.

Favorite Pixar Movies And Money Talk

SPEAKER_03

You know what Pixar movie really got me? And I think it might have been a combination. The timing was released. But I love like I loved Soul. Like, oh my god. Yeah, it got released right in the middle of just when uh I think that was a pandemic movie, right? Just when COVID hit, so everybody's inside. Like, it just I I absolutely love that movie. But I guess it didn't make as much money. But well, you couldn't go outside to buy anything.

SPEAKER_06

It had no chance, yeah. That was straight to yeah, so it made 122 million worldwide against uh a 150 million dollar budget, so that's that's terrible. Yeah, but it it it went directly to Disney Plus, you know. So that's not the movie's fault. That is a really good movie, yeah. It's a such a good movie, and like the whole concept of like being in the zone, like I really liked how they displayed that, you know?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah, no, I like it. Yeah, but yeah, I don't yeah, I didn't have a chance with the yeah, it went straight to Disney Plus.

SPEAKER_02

So, you know, how do you pay for it? As long as you already fan Disney Plus, you don't have to pay for anything. So yeah, that's a little difficult. I'm sure if it was like uh an actual release, it probably would have done much better, but that's okay.

SPEAKER_06

I I think so. I think so. Is there any movie? Which movie? Oh, sorry. Sorry, you go ahead.

SPEAKER_03

I was gonna add, is there is there another Pixar movie like not in your top not in the top five that you don't you really enjoy?

SPEAKER_06

Coco. Coco really hit hard. That's a good movie. It's a really good movie. I really enjoyed that. Music. I mean, Pixar always usually does really well with their music and their films, but the story was good. The visual it that was a really really heartwarming story. I really like Coco. I've been meaning to re-watch Coco actually, just watch it with Malachi. You must sit him down and watch it because that's that's a good one, that's a fun one.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, cool.

Plot Basics And Toy Cast Roll Call

SPEAKER_06

So Toy Story is classic story.

SPEAKER_01

We have Is it a classic story?

SPEAKER_06

It's become a modern day classic.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, yeah. So we have no, it's actually a very original story, which is why it was so goddamn amazing. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Classic story, you know, toys come to life. I'm like, oh nutcracker? Like, yeah, I was like, oh no, duh.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, so very original story. So the concept of the movie for for any small child that hasn't seen this, or any adult that's just not into I don't know, cartoons or animated shows. You have a group of toys, and there's the I don't know what to call Andy, their kid. I almost said like their owner. That's it, just sounds too like slavy, slavey, you know.

SPEAKER_00

He always sounds like that. Anyway, that's his toys.

SPEAKER_06

So you have a bunch of toys that are played with by this boy, Andy, and the toys' whole thing is you know, keeping Andy happy and you know, doing their toy duties. The movie kicks off with Andy's birthday approaching. Actually, his yeah, his birthday was approaching. There's a birthday party about to happen, and a new toy enters the mix that has all the toys just kind of nervous, particularly our main toy, Woody, voiced by Tom Hanks, and then Buzz Lightyear is voiced by Tim Allen. The cast is actually pretty big for this movie. All the characters that you have, like there's uh Mr. Potato Head, Slinky Dog, Rex, uh, literally Tyrannosaurus Rex. There's a Piggy Bank, his name is Ham, Bo Peep, uh, a Purcelling doll, and there's plenty of plenty of toys. It's a huge cast. But our stars are Tom Hanks and Tim Allen. The movie starts off with Andy playing with Woody, and you're just seeing the draw, you've seen how much fun he's having. He he has Mr. Potato Head set up as the villain, and he does as kids do, you know, just playing out, acting out a scene, and just having the most fun.

Toy Logic Problems And Andy Chaos

SPEAKER_03

Andy is a dick voice. Okay.

SPEAKER_06

Here comes the cynicism. I'm sorry. What was the first dick move that Andy did? Tell me.

SPEAKER_03

The first dick move?

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. That made you say, well, Andy's addicted toys. What what what happened?

SPEAKER_03

That entire opening sequence when he's playing with them. Like, he uh he throws, especially to Woody. He throws Woody on the car, smashes him into a building, he knocks off like every piece of the potato head, which I mean it's intense to do that, so fine, whatever. Then he like slides Woody down like the banister, like flings him in the air. Then there's this projectile type. I don't know how his chair is that like springy. Like he just flings him in the air. I'm like, damn. I don't think it is. I'm like, okay, Woody is supposedly alive. Does he feel this? Like, what is the what's the limit here?

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, so that is something that is inconsistent, like what their pain tolerance and stuff is. Because later on, when he gets like burnt from the the magnifying glass, he felt that shit reacts as if he's getting burnt.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_06

But and then another inconsistency that I actually I didn't know that, but what I noted was his strength is inconsistent. Because there's there's times where he can move shit, and there's other times where he's like, Oh, I'm just a helpless toy, I really can't push this thing. So I'm like, dude, like how strong is he? Is this like a situation where like an ant has the strength of 10 men or something? Like if they were human size, or like what is going on here? Yeah, but it doesn't scale well. It's like all over the place.

SPEAKER_03

Especially, I think the almost the last scene when he has to pop up the damn back of the moving truck. I'm like, first of all, I've had to lift those before. That's just heavy.

SPEAKER_06

I think that's when I wrote it. That's when I wrote make my note. I was like, okay, just I'm just throwing this out the window. Like at certain times, Woody has a strength of 10 men, and other times he is, you know, useless. I don't know. But yeah, that opening that door, yeah, those things are not easy to operate. Not at all.

SPEAKER_03

The laugh by itself and then pulling it up. Like, come on, bro. That was like alright. And he's addicted to toys, but otherwise, well, okay, he's a young child.

SPEAKER_06

So, how did you play with your toys? Oh my, oh my, oh my gosh. Okay, we're gonna just move along from there, keep the mood up. Everyone's having fun, we're having a great time, guys. Yes. So after Andy leaves, the toys come to life, and the magic begins, and we're like, oh shit, what is happening, right? So Woody's clearly the alpha of the toys. He's the one in charge, he's a sheriff, you know. We get a good scene where we get his personality, and I don't know, like I thought it was supposed to like let us know the affection and respect that all the toys have for him. They turned on Woody.

SPEAKER_01

But oh my god.

SPEAKER_06

For some dude, they don't even know, they don't know Buzz from Adam, and they were done with Woody.

SPEAKER_03

But I mean, I mean, they did watch him push him out the window.

SPEAKER_06

So I mean they thought they thought he killed him. Yeah, so I guess their sense of justice is very high, like their moral compass.

SPEAKER_03

They don't give a shit who you were. They're like, Oh, you kill a toy, you're out of here. Like, okay.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, but I I got annoyed with them at the end when Woody was trying to save Buzz with RC, and they're like, get him out of here. I'm like, can you guys settle down, please? Like, we're in the middle of something. Yeah, but so the we have the questionable loyalty of the toys. As a movie starts, though, we get one of the greatest just songs in animated film history, and we get the needle drop of You Got a Friend and Me by the great who's still alive, Randy Newman.

SPEAKER_03

I'm pretty sure he's really impressed right now for Toy Stories 5 playing You Got a Friend Me.

SPEAKER_06

You know who's doing press for that? Taylor Swift. Yeah, apparently she did a song.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Did you listen to it?

SPEAKER_03

I I didn't see, I didn't hear her new song, but I saw him and her playing together.

SPEAKER_06

Okay. Yeah, so I listened to it because on Disney Plus is also at, you know, they're pushing marketing for it as well. And I listened to it before we started Toy Story, and by the time the song was finished, I already forgot the song.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, Jesus.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I don't know, man. I'm like, I this is not I'm I mean, I know I'm not supposed to compare it, but I don't know. It's Taylor Swift, though, but I don't listen to Taylor Swift. I shouldn't have said that out loud. Oops. There goes our four followers. Sorry.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, no, having Taylor Swift attached to the movie is obviously good marketing because Taylor Swift's fan base is you know pretty keen up a certain colour. They didn't need that though. They didn't need it. No, they didn't need it. But you know people are gonna go just because of that, so I could see it. So like, but like for us, like us at our age, if someone was like, oh, Randy Newman's playing the song, we'd be like, who? Like, but the song by itself carried itself where we're still like singing it or whatever, so for sure.

SPEAKER_06

For sure. We weren't like riding for Randy Newman in '95 or '96.

SPEAKER_03

We gotta go stick, like, like no, that's not what happened.

SPEAKER_06

We get introduced to all the characters, the toys, their personalities, and everything. To me, we get an awesome scene. Well, before we get to the awesome scene, right? A couple things right out the gate. One, I forgot how rude Potato Head is. Oh my god. He's rude as hell. Listen to me. Potato Head called, he called Ham an uncultural swine. I say that all the time. I did not remember that this is what movie it came from. Did you know that?

SPEAKER_03

Yes, I know you say it all the time. No, I did not know that's what you guys know. I feel like other people I feel like it comes from other places too, but I could see.

SPEAKER_06

Before 95. I mean, this came on in 95. So as far as I'm concerned, I'm five years old. Like, this is I don't know what came before that. But yeah, Potato Head, there's a gesture when Potato Head takes his lips off and puts it on his butt, telling him to kiss his ass. I'm like, what is going on here?

SPEAKER_03

Well, he didn't tell him. He's Slinky's like, Slinky's saying, because I think Woody's trying to talk. Okay, he and Slinky's like saying, like, Woody's like awesome. So he calls so he puts his lips in his ass to call him a kiss ass.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, he called him a kiss ass. Okay, that's still pretty rude.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. I have a list of all the insults in the in the movie, but I'll I'll wait a little bit before I drop that.

SPEAKER_04

Okay.

Birthday Recon And Buzz Arrives

SPEAKER_06

So there's a big realization, there's a birthday party happening today. Woody thought was happening later, it's happening today. We gotta get into action. The the green army men, toy soldiers, the bucket of uh soldiers, they kick in the gear, and we have what is one of the coolest scenes of the movie when the soldiers mobilize and make their way downstairs to go and hide in the plant to relay with the walkie-talkie to the toys upstairs what they're seeing. So the soldiers are able to get into position and you know they they call all the toys or all the gifts, and it's like a board game, it's a lunchbox.

SPEAKER_03

Didn't somebody give them um bench feats? Why did they give a lunch game? Yeah, no, I don't know how it looks like.

SPEAKER_06

Did you hear one of the toys say who invited them? Did you hear that?

SPEAKER_03

I think I got it.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, it was like chatter in the background. I I thought it was funny. So they're like, Alright, this is a rap. They cut the walkie, right? And when the mom came out with the surprise gift, right, and the soldier was like, get the thing back on. Like, I I got so hyped because he's like, like the franticness in his voice, and you know, they're telling him that yo, there's a surprise toy, like something big is coming. And that's when we get our reveal of the Space Ranger himself, Mr. Buzz Lightyear. Speaking of Andy being an asshole, he straight up just cleared Woody off the bed.

SPEAKER_02

He did. Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

He really did. I thought it was a different kid, but Woody kind of admitted that it was Andy that did that to him. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because he rolled in once they cleared the bedroom, they came in. Once they cleared the bedroom, you know, they just toys come to life again. They're like, oh, where's Woody? Woody's like under the bed. First of all, how do you get under the bed? Like, even if you swipe, yeah. Like, how would you get under? But okay, whatever.

SPEAKER_06

He had to he had to crawl under the bed once he hit the floor. That's what I'm thinking.

SPEAKER_03

Maybe. I don't know if you stayed up there. Why? I don't know. Yeah, I'd have just stayed where he landed. Like, okay. I don't know, whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

But yeah, so he's up, so he learns, he's under the bed, and the kids, uh, the other toys are like, where's Woody at? Woody pops out, he looks disheveled, all to the sauce on the side. Like, oh. Like, oh, he's been displaced, huh? The kids the the toys already start rubbing it in. Like, they didn't even have no kind of compassion at all. Especially since they were all like concerned about being replaced themselves.

SPEAKER_06

So it's like exactly. So why were they even concerned to begin with? I guess I don't know. Yeah, maybe they were concerned for Woody or something. I don't know. But then they seem to kind of relish the fact that Woody wasn't in charge anymore. That's why, like, the whole like hierarchy in there, it seems like it was pretty tenuous. Like, yeah, it's just whatever new toy comes in, if Andy says this is toy number one, that's who we follow. You need to fall in line. And Woody was not about that life. Quick note that I forgot to mention I forgot how horny Bo Peep was.

SPEAKER_01

She was on it, she was ready to get. Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know what. I don't know what Bopete like Anuendo I was trying to say, but she cheered is all I got. I didn't know what to say. She shared is what I got.

SPEAKER_06

Sure. Okay. Hey man. Yeah, I guess.

SPEAKER_03

But oh my god. Like again, I love watching these movies, these chill quote unquote children movies as an adult because there's so many things that you see and you're like, ha ha. Like I I feel like I was laughing a lot more now than I was as a kid. Like I think I was just enjoying the visuals and the lights like an idiot. But now I'm actually like understanding and like I don't watch her story the other day. I don't know if I was not paying attention or whatever, but this time I actually watched it and paying attention. And she was like, she says something like I think I was supposed to write it down, but I was just enjoying the movie, so I forgot. But she said something like Meet Me by the Building Blocks or something, and there was like literal Too Woody. Was it Woody? Yeah, too Woody, yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

She said something something leading to the blocks, but there's literal building blocks. It's like, ah, ah, those blocks. Life kind of was weird.

SPEAKER_06

Listen, the it wasn't even subtle though. The bull peep stuff. It was so on the nose. I'm like, what the f like I did not, I know I didn't pick that up as a kid, but damn.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, I think we picked up on it, but we didn't understand. It was like sex. It was not like, ah, they have a little crush, bro. Kissy. Oh, kissy kissy.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, yes. We knew that much. Yeah. No, bull people's trying to fuck 100%.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, she was alright. Which is that word? You know what? I don't even care.

SPEAKER_06

Let's not even go there. Let's not even go there.

SPEAKER_03

You know something else that bothers me about this scene before we move on? Again, the inconsistency with like the toys and what works and what doesn't. So when the army men are like reporting, they're using binoculars. But if their binoculars are blocked off. So I'm like, what the fuck are they seeing through there? Because it's like, it's a plastic, it's not like a hole. Oh, okay. It's a blocked-off binocular. So how are they seeing through it? And if those work, then why doesn't Buzz Lightyear's laser work?

SPEAKER_06

Jesus. Alright. I was about to explain the binocular thing, and you just, you just Oh, okay, my bad.

SPEAKER_03

Cut me off. Sorry.

SPEAKER_06

Cut me off at my legs. I have no, I don't, I I don't, I don't, I don't have an answer for you for that one. Okay. I don't know. Maybe. No, I don't know. Yeah, I don't know. Listen to me, right? What I will not do, what I will not make time for, what I will not stand for, is for us to scrutinize and disparage the toy logic. Okay?

SPEAKER_03

Okay. That's what we do at real talk and banter.

SPEAKER_06

I mean, it's been done, it's been said, we're all aware of the things. The biggest thing, why does Buzz freeze if he doesn't believe he's a toy? I know you're coming with it. I know you're coming with it. And you know what? I don't care.

SPEAKER_04

Okay. Fair.

SPEAKER_06

I don't, I don't. I mean, you can still bring it up. I'm not silencing you. But I don't know. It just. Well, you know, so there was another thing where so when the scene moves up, so they they meet and there's the whole shenanigans, right? There's one point when Woody and Buzz are arguing, and Woody like accidentally opens Buzz's helmet and he starts freaking out. And I'm like, you telling me in the week that that Andy's been playing with Buzz, he hasn't opened the helmet once. I thought that was kind of weird.

SPEAKER_03

It was weird. You know he has. You know he's got that thing open.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, he had to have. And then another thing, right? In the so the the movie gives us clear timelines for what's happening, which I love timelines, guys, right? So the party's happening as the movie starts. They're moving in one week. Now, we get a montage of Andy playing with Buzz in what seems like several months, but it's one week because that's that's what it said. In that one week of time, Andy redecorates his fucking room, replaces all his posters, his cowboy posters, changes his bed sheets just to pack them up like a day or two later when they move. I, for the life of me, that bothered me. I could not understand that. I was like, this makes no sense. Yeah, and the mom's aren't very good. No, you're gonna we will set up your new shit at the new house when we make it there. Yeah, we're not doing that for four or five days. Absolutely not. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So I mean, is this like well, it is summer because they uh when Sid when Sid enters, they're like, oh, he must be back from summer camp. So it is summertime.

SPEAKER_06

From summer camp, yeah, it's summertime. Absolutely. Yeah, yeah. So I guess late summer. Well, no, it could be mid, I think it's mid summer because they said back from summer camp early. Like he got kicked out. Yeah, he definitely got kicked out.

SPEAKER_03

Sid needs to be in a prison somewhere, to be very honest.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, that's interesting. I was wondering if you were gonna be a Sid apologist on the pod here.

SPEAKER_04

No, no.

SPEAKER_06

Because I I have a note here about Sid. Well, we're gonna get to Sid in a minute, right?

Woody’s Plan Backfires Badly

SPEAKER_06

After to post party, we just get the montage of Andy playing. He's like, fuck Woody, I'm all but buzz now. And then now we have the Pizza Planet set where Andy's about to go to Pizza Planet, you know, with his mom for a party, or they're hanging. They did a lot in this week. I'm like, you guys, you guys need to be packing up and focusing on moving. So much happened in this week since the party. Big dog, whatever.

SPEAKER_03

Big dog. Big dog. What? Listen, when I know I'm skipping all over the place, but when Woody popped the freaking truck open and we looked in the back, and there was like three boxes back there. I was like, what's not a lot of stuff?

SPEAKER_06

First of all, first of all, you do not need what was a 30-foot truck? Like you do not need that size truck.

SPEAKER_03

Like moving truck. Woody pops it open, and there's three boxes in there, and two of them are Andy's toys. It's like Toys? There's some shit. I swear to God, I was so pissed off. That's what that's what it is. That's what it went back in because they literally didn't have shit apparently.

SPEAKER_06

They did not move anything. I guess the furniture came with that.

SPEAKER_03

Maybe there's a free furniture. Okay, we can do that. Sure.

SPEAKER_06

Maybe. I guess, but then why spend the money on that big ass box truck? I don't know. You just need like a pickup. They just needed a pickup truck for the stuff they had. They could just throw those boxes in the in the bed and that was it.

SPEAKER_03

Shit, mail it at that point. Shit.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, that too. Yeah. Which I don't think I think they were just like moving like down the block, or not down the block, but they weren't leaving like the state, you know?

SPEAKER_03

So yeah, it's always anyway. Yeah. Yeah. So I think they were just going to. She said uh they were just gonna get pizza. And I guess this pizza parlor place also has like a video game set up, you know, kind of like a fun little kid hangout thing.

SPEAKER_06

It's lit. It's lit. I remember being like as a kid, like, yo, Pizza Planet looks amazing. Like I wish I wish we had a Pizza Planet. So right before this all happens, though, Woody is still plotting how to get back in Andy's well to become Andy's top toy. And he his initial plan, because he overhears that Andy is allowed to bring one toy. So Woody was trying to trap Buzz behind a dresser so that Andy couldn't find him. And instead, a series of unfortunate events happen and Buzz gets knocked out of the window. When that happens, the toys catch on and they accuse Woody of intentionally knocking Buzz out the window and essentially to start calling him like a murderer and whatnot, and they immediately turn on Woody. And all loyalty was gone. They were like, yeah, no, like you're not, we don't, we don't ride with that. That's not cool. Did you catch how devious Woody looked when he was making his plan?

SPEAKER_01

No. I didn't catch that.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. It was real sinister. Yeah, when he was like trying to figure out, okay, what I'm gonna do here.

SPEAKER_03

I think I still don't see how the plan is gonna work regardless.

SPEAKER_06

Even if he did travel behind a dresser, like when he just like crawled out under, like not quick enough because Woody, not Woody, but Andy was on his way up, so it would have just bought him time so that Andy would have just had to grab Woody that's the first toy he's seen, you know? So it would have worked. Buzz wouldn't have built to get up right away.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Um Andy, Andy's mom, and Okay, here we go.

SPEAKER_06

I know what you're about to say. Go ahead.

SPEAKER_03

Nah, tell me what I'm about to say. No. What am I about to say?

SPEAKER_06

Are you about to talk about their situational awareness?

SPEAKER_03

Situational awareness. I mean, in a sense.

SPEAKER_06

Like their intelligence or whatever?

SPEAKER_03

No, no, no, not intelligent.

SPEAKER_06

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

I guess in a sense, but I'm just gonna keep going and then you can talk about what you're gonna talk about. My thing is, I assume that my place is haunted. Because there's no way these toys are going back into the exact same spot that I left them every single time. They're not they're all over the place. Like when we have the the hazard of Annie going through the opening scene where he's like knocking everything over, emptying the pig. What's the pig's name? Is it just Ham? Ham. Emptying it Ham, which is a piggy bank out. When they like get themselves together, they like put themselves back together. So I'm like, are they throwing themselves back apart every time he shows up? And no, they're not. So does he just think he must you know what's happening? His mom must think it's him, and he must think it's his mom. And they're just like, oh, I guess I couldn't.

SPEAKER_06

That could be it. And but and that's believable because first of all, Sandy's not that young. He's what he's got a like 10 or something, right? So old enough to have a little more awareness, but man, kids, they're not paying attention to shit, man. They don't remember that they left their toy on the table and not on the floor, or on the floor, not on the table. I would definitely remember that.

SPEAKER_02

Like, I'd be like, I know Chuppy, I'm like, nah, my shit is haunted. Get the shit out of here.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I feel like your toys would know that about you then, and they would be, they will work extra hard to go back exactly where you are. I think they know Andy is not the brightest bulb. You know, like he's not the sharpest tool in the shed. He's not so they're like, because they they attempted at the very first time to be like places places as in to like resume where you were before, but it later on as the movie progresses, nah, they just stopping in place. Wherever they are, they just dropped.

SPEAKER_01

Andy's coming dropped. I'm like, what the fuck? You were not there before.

SPEAKER_06

For for but I agree with the whole like haunted thing because Buzz goes missing, and then Woody goes missing, and like he doesn't even notice that Woody's missing until like after the fact. And then when the movie ends and Buzz and Woody just show up, oh and he's like, Oh, they were here all along. No, no, they weren't. Yeah, they were not sitting on top of the box that's right next to you in your eye line the entire time. What are you talking about? And his mom, she's gotta be drunk. Like, I mean, like, she's like self-medicated. She's gotta be self-medicated. She's a single mom, she has two kids, she's doing a move, she's stressed out. When Andy said, Oh, they're here all along, she's like, Oh, yeah, I I know I told you they'll turn up. She didn't give a fuck. Yeah, she really did. She had already moved on.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

100% she moved on. Yeah, so that's tough. So Andy does take Woody on his on his way to to Pizza Planet. Buzz hijacks a ride with the, you know, he sees Andy leaving, Woody and Andy leaving. So he hijacks a ride, and then they confront each other, and then they both get left behind at a gas station at a truck stop.

Pizza Planet Aliens And Sid Kidnaps

SPEAKER_06

So we're at Pizza Planet, right? And Woody convinces Buzz to play ball. They have a ride on a spaceship, which was the Pizza Planet truck. Buzz and Woody make it to Pizza Planet, and that's where we meet one of the more iconic members of the franchise, the little green aliens.

unknown

Oh.

SPEAKER_02

I thought you were Sid. I was like, what?

SPEAKER_06

Oh, no. Yeah, Sid comes up next. Buzz gets stuck in the claw machine where the where the Green Aliens are. Sid goes, pulls out a Green Alien, and is able to get a two-for-one. He pulls out Buzz and Woody and takes them home to terrorize them. Let's talk about Sid.

SPEAKER_03

It's like the Green Aliens made me laugh so bad. Because so you didn't mention that before he grabbed him, like he was able to, Woody was able to hold on to Buzz and was trying to like pull him. And eventually the clock probably released because it's like probably like a little bit of a touch and like, oh it jammed. So it probably would have released. But the freaking green aliens are like, no, he's chosen, and starts like they suck just too bad. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_06

Because they they they have one existence, which is to wait there to be chosen by this claw. And it's like if Buzz could have sneak in there, you guys can just leave, right? And they're just sitting there in the middle of the night, just like their whole their whole existence is to wait to be chosen by the claw. And who are you to get in the way of that? So yeah, well, they're chosen all right. The green alien is immediately decimated by Scud. Scud is his name, the dog?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Actually, I don't know what it is, but yeah, whatever it is.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. Listen, man, like I don't we don't have to go into exactly like detail like Sid's thing. We can just talk about Sid in general. Look, Cid apologists are nuts. That boy is a terror. Like people like to say, oh, Cid was just his creative mind that was just playing with his toys, and then the toys terrorize him and scard him for life. Nah, man. In the opening scene, he immediately starts to pick on his sister. He steals her toy, he destroys her toy. Sid is a monster, a hundred percent.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I don't know. Oh my god. So as I was watching it, not only is Sid an asshole to his everybody else around him, but he's also an asshole to his own toys. And he has these like weird contractions. So I I thought, and again, it plays into the whole like I must have ghosts, because apparently I thought that Sid, and maybe he is, maybe he is, I don't know. I I I'm kinda iffy about it, but I thought that Sid was putting the toys together in these weird ways. But then when I saw how they fixed up Buzz, I was like, maybe they're like fixing themselves with like parts that they could find, and that's how they end up with these like weird combinations of toys.

SPEAKER_06

No, I no, I think Sid is doing that. I think they were able to fix Buzz because his parts were still there. And they fixed the the doll because the parts were still there. I think when Sid mixed and matches, he like destroys. There's not there's just remains left, you know? So I just don't think they're able to like fix themselves because there's nothing else, you know, for them to go back to. What really freaked me out about Sid's toys this time around, I mean, as a kid, like that baby man with the spider legs, definitely creepy as hell. But as an adult now, I'm like, why don't any of Sid's toys talk? That was so eerie and unnerving for me. I was like, what the hell? Like they don't even speak. Like all these toys speak. The freaking like we've seen all these toys, all of them are speaking, and none of these speak? I don't know. That was weird. I was like, what did this like he just traumatized these toys?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, he did. The other thing I thought is exactly what Woody's plan was. I was like, like, obviously, Sid is a bully to things that cannot protect themselves. So okay. Just freak him out. I would have like already turned on a long time ago. Like, listen, man, stop fucking trying to kill us. And like watch him freak out and like, all right, get away from us. Like, what are you doing? Stop messing with toys.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, so you're saying that Woody had too much buildup to that?

SPEAKER_01

No, I'm saying I would have done if I was like six toys, I would have done that a long time ago.

SPEAKER_06

Just turning him one time. Yeah. I don't I don't think. So that's interesting, right? I I think there's some type of code or something. Like they're not supposed to. I Rudy Wood uh Rudy. Woody broke, like I feel like Woody broke some type of sacred law in revealing himself to someone. He didn't blow up. Yeah, I think. So fuck it. No, well, he didn't, but you don't know that you're not gonna blow up. Like you just know you're not supposed to be seen by humans. Like you're not, you're not supposed to do that. And I feel like I feel like that that was done to like help put Woody in this like liberator kind of mode. Because on rewatches of this movie, Woody doesn't exactly look like the best protagonist of the movie. Like he's he's jealous, he's he's insecure, he's you know, he's mean. So when he like befriends these toys or realizes that you know they they're not a threat and you know it's okay, I think that that moment was him becoming like a savor to help out these toys. And he so he broke that one golden rule, which is do not let humans see you move or talk. So I I think that's why.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. And then what about him, Buzz, and RC flying down the street, down a neighborhood?

SPEAKER_06

Oh. What about it? You mean like you don't know if you if you're driving in a car and you see a race car driving with two toys on it, you don't know that some kid isn't nearby operating that car. As you see it, you as you see it, you're gone. You don't have enough time to investigate. You were driving a vehicle.

SPEAKER_03

Well, why was RC going like 40 miles an hour? How is that possible? That's a good without the fucking rocket going like 40 miles an hour. Like, stop it.

SPEAKER_06

My thing is, can RC drive without the remote control or not? That was also inconsistent for me. I like stare himself and whatnot. Like, what does he need the remote control or is he good without it? You know, that was not clear to me as well. I don't even know. Like, so Sid, so Sid was trying to blow up Buzz. Where did Sid get this rocket from? Did his mom buy that for him? Did he steal her credit card? Or like what happened here? What do you think happened?

SPEAKER_03

He had to, and you know what? I think I think she was like, oh, what's that? And he was like, not their mom, or something like that. So maybe he does like just like steal her card or you know, or says, Hey, this is a toy, and she just like, yeah, sure, whatever, not realizing it's like a military grid rocket for some reason that you could just buy on the internet. I mean, it was the nineties in which you know, yeah, yeah. You could you could get anything in the 90s on the internet, like you know, it was very easy to just get things. Like, I don't know how we're not all really messed up from the things that you could look at and do on the internet in the 90s, because it was really bad.

SPEAKER_06

Anyway, yeah, for sure. I mean, yeah, for sure. So the toys don't know that Woody and Buzz have rekindled, they're like best friends now, and Woody's trying to save Buzz, and these toys are not with it. They want nothing to do with the guy, and they throw him out of the truck.

SPEAKER_03

I could understand, like, we're just gonna ostracize you because I mean, for five years or something, you have been our leader or whatever. Yeah, so I think I'm just gonna like we're gonna ostracize you, not talk to you, trying to give you the cool shoulder. But to literally throw him out the truck, was just throw him out and move into it. Insane, like insane crowd mentality for them to just take on. And it's all like egged on by put Mr. Potato Head. Like, he was yeah, he was bout in.

SPEAKER_06

He is he's an anarchist. Him and him are they are the worst. They are not, those are not your friends. They are not. Oh my gosh. They're there for the drama. That's all they're there for. Chaos and drama.

Buzz’s Identity Crash And Friendship

SPEAKER_03

Okay, you know what? Just immediately losing sense of self.

SPEAKER_06

I know. Having an existential crisis.

SPEAKER_03

Oh my god. Again, this is like a 10-minute scenario of it, like

SPEAKER_06

I know the deep end quickly. We focus just on Cid, but yeah, a lot more happened in Stid's house than just Cid terrorizing the toys. So Buzz finally comes to realization that he is not a Space Ranger. He is in fact just a toy. Because when they were trying to escape, they got separated when Scud was chasing them. And Buzz hid in a room where I think Stid's dad or someone was watching TV and a Buzz Lightyear commercial came on. And that shit just broke him. And when he saw the toy and the first of all, that was a terrible commercial.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I wouldn't buy that shit. It looks stupid. Want that. Stupid. That is not a toy I want.

SPEAKER_06

I just I just think it was poorly shot, man. Like those kids, like, pew, pew, pew. Like the kids in the commercial is what ruined the commercial. They could have done a better job.

SPEAKER_03

They make me want to get it. I wouldn't buy it.

SPEAKER_06

Um well Buzz decided to test out because he saw an open window. He climbed up the banister and he decided to try. This is not funny. This is so tragic. He tries to fly out the window. And my guy immediately thwarted by gravity and loses his damn arm in the process. That's not that is not funny, man. Um, I do not remember Sid's sister's name, but she found Buzz and she goes to do tea time with him. So somehow, how did Woody escape the closet that he locked himself in?

SPEAKER_03

Ooh, great question.

SPEAKER_06

That was bothering me because when he shut the door, I was like, wait, how is he gonna get out of there?

SPEAKER_03

I guess he can open doorknobs. I mean, if freaking the left director can, so sure.

SPEAKER_06

The doorknob is like freaking like the equivalent of like a 30 feet like thing for us. Like, how would he reach that? I don't know. Well, anyway, we find it.

SPEAKER_03

Maybe he squeezed underneath the door. Maybe he's like a rat? He's funny enough.

SPEAKER_06

With a collapsible fucking spine? What are you talking about?

SPEAKER_03

I don't even know what he's made of, but not all of him.

SPEAKER_06

His head is hard plastic.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, so he just like you know. Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, that's not what happened. Okay, that's not what it is. What was more plausible?

SPEAKER_03

He squeezed under the door or he opened the freaking doorknob.

SPEAKER_06

Him opening the doorknob is more plausible than him squeezing under it. I'm sorry. But okay, moving on. It just is. Like he like knocked over a broom and then he like shimmered. No, there's a fucking broom in there.

SPEAKER_03

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_06

It was a broom closet. It was like a broom closet.

SPEAKER_03

My broom closet does not have a broom in it. I swear to God. It has everything but every broom is like in the hall. Exactly.

SPEAKER_06

Holy shit. Yeah, so Buzz has an identity crisis where he briefly believes he is Mrs. Templeton. I don't remember what it was called. But he completely crashes out and he just doesn't know, he has no sense of self. And Woody has to coach him up and bring him back to reality. So this is actually where the heart of the movie is, right? And so sorry for glossing over this because this is actually a big turning point in the film in Buzz and Woody's relationship, their friendship. Which this is what allows them to make more movies after this one. Yeah. You know? And Woody Woody actually gets trapped. Well, he makes a failed attempt to communicate across because Sid and Andy's houses, their neighbors, he tries to communicate with other toys. That goes terribly because they see Buzz's severed arm, and that's that's when they start calling him. That's when they called him a murderer. Yeah. Yeah. That's they were like, nah, we're done with this guy. This guy's off the deep end.

SPEAKER_03

You're right. They did kind of still like, oh, it's Woody, it's Woody.

SPEAKER_06

That was just that was just Slink, Slinky. Like, yeah. He he was the only people that were still really pro Woody, I would say, was Slinky and Bolt Peep. Yeah. I think like Rex may have been neutral. And then like most of the toys were like, nah, man, this guy is moving real sus, you know? And then when they saw that arm, they was like, whoa, Woody's gone off the deep end. He's done.

SPEAKER_03

It was like why would he hiding nothing? And then bring out the freaking arm.

90s Insults And Why It Hits

SPEAKER_06

Do you want me to tell you all the times Woody insulted Buzz in this?

SPEAKER_03

Before we do that.

SPEAKER_06

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

One of the reasons that Woody and Buzz relationship slash friendship is so relatable is because we see all the time with like children, adults, all whatever. Like you get a new person in the group, a new person in the area, you have the insecurity, you try to feel each other out. You're like, I don't have this person, I don't know this person. Especially if they're quote unquote better than you, right? Because Woody is an older toy. So he doesn't, you know, he has a little voice box that says, There's a snake in my boom. And I'm like, what the fuck? Get the snake out. That's dumb. Dumb catchphrase. You know, it's on the TV show, but it's like I love that Woody's roundup.

SPEAKER_06

I love that line so much, but yeah, it is completely silly and dangerous. Yeah. Because it's most likely a rattlesnake. You saw a dead.

SPEAKER_03

Get that snake out of there. That's kind of weird. But yeah, but you know, Buzz has more action type things with his uh his uh wings or you know, glide gliders or whatever you want to call them, you know, his little space shoots, pelvic thing moves, his little light thing, and then he also well his laser beam, and then he also speaks, you know, too. It's a really good thing. So yeah, I think most people be like kind of like what's the moment in our friend group where I'm like, who the fuck is this guy? Yeah, Buzz and Woody, they figure it out. They realize that Buzz realizes that you know he doesn't have to be a space ranger to actually have value, he's a value by a toy, you know. He would he got Mark Zandies plaything now.

SPEAKER_04

So it means something.

SPEAKER_03

It means something. So yeah, so Woody have to remind him of that. Would Buzz have to remind Woody that you know he doesn't have to be the awful dog as far as always, he didn't have to be the leader necessarily. I mean, no, that's not right. He's still a leader, even if he's not the new thing. Yeah, like he's still a person that people look up to, and even though they did turn on him pretty quickly, you know, he's the you know, he's the leader.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So I think it just shows that, you know, eventually a person that you might see as a rival for various reasons, misunderstanding, or whatever, kind of basically became become your closest like ally and friend, and they they showed that. So but aside from that, tell me all the reasons. No, tell me all the ways in which Woody insults us.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, no, it's tough, man. This this show, this movie is rude as hell. It really is. Just Woody alone, he disrespected Buzz twice by calling him the wrong name. First, he called him Mr. Light Bear. Then he said, Listen, Mr. Light Snack. He called Buzz an idiot four times. Once he said, he called just called him an idiot, you're an idiot. Then he said, Shut up, you idiot, later on. Then when they were jumping into the pizza panic car, he said, What an idiot. And then he said, You idiot, you're a toy, use your karate chop action when they were about to get swarmed by Sid's toys. Overall, the word idiot was said five times in this movie. The fifth time was Mr. Potato Head. Yeah, was Mr. Potato Head calling somebody an idiot very early in the movie, like freaking like 10 minutes into the movie. The soldiers call Woody a dirtbag. The toys threatened to hang Woody. Remember the etching sketch drew the noose for him?

SPEAKER_00

They did.

SPEAKER_06

You had a good riddance to your loony, and then a stupid dog insult that was in there, I guess, towards Scud. This movie was rude as hell. You know, we talked about like cartoons being like for adults and stuff, too, or whatever. Like, just how much time there was, I don't know. I feel like you're not gonna see in a cartoon right now they're just calling people idiots like left and right, like that. Like this is such a 90s movie. Yeah, I don't think so. I don't think they would. Yeah, I I think you can't say that, you can't do that of stuff. And there's there's a special charm about the 90s where you were still able to do and say some inappropriate shit, you know, here and there. And Tor Story was not an exception to this. So I just had to point that out because that shit stood out to me. I was like, you idiot. I was like, damn. I knew if I called my brothers an idiot in my household, I was getting my ass whooped. So that's where that shit made me that stood out to me as well.

SPEAKER_02

I don't think I ever noticed that.

SPEAKER_06

Damn. You didn't notice it just now when you watched it either? Damn. Alright, well, hey, I did.

SPEAKER_03

No, I feel like I feel like I like Toy Story over Toy Story One. No, not over. Toy Story One is like classic, but I like the storyline with Toy Story 2 a lot. I don't know.

SPEAKER_06

I haven't so I haven't seen Toy Story 2 in a while.

SPEAKER_03

So go down a deep dive and watch one, two, three and see what's right.

SPEAKER_06

Well, I'm actually about to. I'm gonna rewatch, I'm in the process of re-watching all of them with Malachi leading up to his birthday. Yeah, yeah. So that's work. We're yeah, we're gonna watch two one of these days

Toy Story 5 Box Office Bet

SPEAKER_06

here. Yeah. So yeah, we're about to go through them because we're gonna see Toy Story 5 for his birthday. I'm going to the movies. Well, he's having his party at the movie theater.

SPEAKER_04

Hell yeah.

SPEAKER_06

But I was gonna ask you, like, so we just saw Toy Story 2 and no three and four made a billion dollars. Toy Story Five, you think it's a lock for a billion dollars or no?

SPEAKER_03

No.

SPEAKER_06

You don't think so?

SPEAKER_03

I don't think so.

SPEAKER_06

I think that's a guaranteed billion.

SPEAKER_03

I don't think so.

SPEAKER_06

Why not?

SPEAKER_03

I don't think so.

SPEAKER_06

I th I don't think um When did Four come out with four came out in Four came out in 2019?

SPEAKER_03

I feel like the kids who saw it then are checking for it now. And then I feel like I don't okay, go ahead.

SPEAKER_06

Seven years ago.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, no. I don't think so. I don't think they're hitting a billion. I mean, they're gonna make some money. I I'd give them like three or four or four hundred million.

SPEAKER_06

Three or four hundred million?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

You out your goddamn mind? They'll kill themselves if that's all that movie makes.

SPEAKER_00

How much is it cost to make?

SPEAKER_06

I just told you, I just told you that movie is is I just told you Pixar films are averaging 589 million.

SPEAKER_03

You don't even think it's gonna make a nine, six hundred million and it's not making a billion. You are out your billion. You were out your bet whatever you like to bet right now. It's not a good thing. Oh, let's do it.

SPEAKER_06

Listen, let me explain to you why you're wrong here, right?

SPEAKER_03

First of all, are you gonna watch Toy Story 5?

SPEAKER_06

Are you do you plan on watching Toy Story 5?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'm gonna watch Toy Story 5.

SPEAKER_03

You know what? I can't now because my dollar may push it over the limit. So I'm just gonna have to pull it off.

SPEAKER_06

Oh 999 million dollars. God damn it, the 40s though.

SPEAKER_03

But I looked $20 to send it over the time, so I'm gonna have to pull off.

SPEAKER_06

I know. So you're looking at it all wrong. Like, it's not about who was a fucking kid when Toy Story 4 came out, it's about us. We're the one with the buying powers. The us who were five, six years old when it came out 30 years ago, we're the ones that are going to watch Toy Story 5, and we're the ones with kids that we're taking to go watch Toy Story 5. Also, like Disney is marketing the shit out of this movie, like it's all over the place. It there's first of all, there's no way this movie doesn't make at least 800 million. You saying 600 million is is absurd to me, but I think it's gonna clear a billion. Easy.

SPEAKER_02

No, it's not making a billion.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, okay. Well, we'll see. Well, this drops this drops opening weekend of Toy Story 5, so we're gonna get an answer pretty quickly based on this after these opening numbers go. But yeah, I expect it to do very, very well.

SPEAKER_03

I just Google it so much like Toy Story 5 will make two billion. I'm like, get the f out of here. So bad.

SPEAKER_06

2 billion is crazy. I'm so mad. We didn't even talk, and that's my fault. I I got overzealous. We didn't even talk about this movie made 363 million worldwide when it opened. It got re-released in '99 again, or when Toy Story 2 came out, it got re-released. So Toy Story has made $401.2 million in nine in the 90s. That's how much this franchise made. It was a $30 million budget back then. And you're telling me it's gonna barely clear what the first movie did? Come on, man.

SPEAKER_03

It's not making a billion. I'm sorry. Come on, man. Just what it is. It's my prediction.

SPEAKER_06

All right.

SPEAKER_03

I'll give it 900 million. It's not making a billion.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, you can't okay. Well, so you're gonna change your guess from four or six hundred million all up to 900 million. No, no, no. And then say it's not making a billion.

SPEAKER_03

That's right, that's my that's practically a billion. The the bet was will it make a billion? You say yes, I say no. If it's 999 million, that is not my fault.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, alright. It'll make it. Do you know how much Super Mario Galaxy made?

SPEAKER_01

Nah. I was trying to Google it and I don't know why it wouldn't come up.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, so stop Googling. I'm gonna ask you right now. Right now, do you think that I don't know the number yet either. Do you think that Toy Story 5 will do better than Super Mario Galaxy? Yes or no?

SPEAKER_04

Yes.

SPEAKER_06

Okay. Super Mario Galaxy movie has grossed over $1.001 billion at a Google Box Office.

SPEAKER_03

Then no.

SPEAKER_06

How about we rate this thing?

Ratings Breakdown And Final Scores

SPEAKER_06

For any newcomers, we rate our movies based on five categories: plot and writing, acting, casting, production, cinematography, music and sound, and cultural impact. Everything is rated on a scale of one to ten. Plot and writing, Jill, what do you have? Tor story. Oh, I have a perfect 10.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, it's a gap right there.

SPEAKER_06

It's a gap right there. It's a gap right there. This is an original movie, original screenplay. Like we we talk about how everything's already been done, or everything is a remake, or a re-thread, or a novel. These guys came together, put together an amazing story. It was even nominated for best original screenplay, which had never ever happened before for animated film. They got a 10 in my book.

SPEAKER_03

I only dropped it because of the things that we pointed out. Like the toy, the toy, the toy story. Toy Logic is kind of off, but okay.

SPEAKER_06

I guess. I guess. But I'm here for it. Acting and casting, what do you have there?

SPEAKER_03

Um, I have a nine for that.

SPEAKER_06

I also have a 10 in this category. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen do an amazing job, but the supporting cast as well, who I did not take the time to mention, but the supporting cast as well did an excellent job. Like it was just a great supporting cast. Your two leads did amazing and are a big part of our childhoods. I give them a 10. Production, cinematography, and visuals. What do you have?

SPEAKER_01

That I actually have a 10.

SPEAKER_06

Okay. No arguments here. I likewise have a 10.

SPEAKER_00

Are you about to give this 50 a full 50 here?

SPEAKER_06

We're about to find out. We're about to find out. We're about to find out. Music and sound. What do you have?

SPEAKER_03

I mean, you can't go wrong with You Got a Friend and Me.

SPEAKER_02

So I gave an attending go.

SPEAKER_06

Oh shit. Likewise. Iconic score. You got a friend and me is one of the most amazing songs that's been in a movie, not just an animated film. And it did receive the nomination for best original score. Cultural impact. Where did you fall on this one?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I mean, there's literally a five coming out. So you can't go anywhere else but ten with this. So I mean, it's spanning at least two generations at this point. As you just pointed out. So, or I guess three, our parents, us, and then now our children. So, you know, three generations. So, yeah, I don't I would I it'd be I would be lying to say it's not culturally impactful. So, yeah, 10.

SPEAKER_06

In addition to all of that stuff, you also have the fact that it's the first animated, uh, fully animated movie, that that revolutionized the game and it it helped propel the movie making industry and the technology and everything that was using it. And Pixar, you know, maybe who they are now. And Pixar being a giant, being their first movie. For this to be your first movie, like your first hit, like, come on, man. You know, like this. Talk about a success story. I have given this also a 10 for my first and only perfectly rated movie that we have covered thus far in RTB's history. Oh, yep. You're okay with me giving Toy Story a perfect score, or I am not okay with you giving toy story a perfect score.

SPEAKER_03

But, you know, this is your childhood thing, so I'm gonna leave it alone. And if this is what you feel, this is what you feel. But okay, I'm not gonna argue off. I'm not gonna argue you off of a childhood memory.

SPEAKER_06

I'm glad And your whole thing is the plot? Like you don't think the plot's good enough?

SPEAKER_03

Good enough. I just it's holes. So I'm recognizing those holes.

SPEAKER_06

What does it everything has holes though? If you if you're gonna go off of that, nothing will ever get a 10 from you. All these movies have holes, plot holes in them. Every single movie has a plot hole.

SPEAKER_02

And I guess we'll never get a 10.

SPEAKER_00

Oh well.

SPEAKER_03

Every single movie has a plot hole. I mean, there's like I guess it depends on the movie. Like, I don't think doubt had a plot hole in it.

SPEAKER_06

I guess not.

SPEAKER_01

I guess not. And I think I gave didn't I give doubt a ten?

SPEAKER_06

No, you did not.

SPEAKER_01

Jesus Christ. Sorry.

SPEAKER_06

You're a dick. You give doubt a six. I gave it a nine. I gave it a seven.

SPEAKER_03

I might give it a six.

SPEAKER_02

Uh sorry, that's it.

SPEAKER_06

You did, yeah. Yeah, you yeah. You were rough on that one.

SPEAKER_01

You know what?

SPEAKER_06

All right, well, hey, all right. Well, toy story, we're gonna have to have like a movie hall of fame or something for our tens, maybe our nines and tens. I don't know. We gotta figure that out. Final scores, you have a 9.2, which is very high. That's your highest score by a lot as well. And I have, as I said, a perfect 10. Well, that will do it for our Real Talk and Banter on Toy

Malachi Talk Toy Story Reactions

SPEAKER_06

Hello and welcome to the Real Talk and Banter Podcast, the movie podcast where we discuss and review films that are at least a decade old. I'm Omari Williams.

SPEAKER_05

I'm Malachi Williams.

SPEAKER_06

And that's right, today we have another episode of Malachi Talk. I don't know, we're working on the name. But we just watched, well, you want to introduce the movie? What did we just watch?

SPEAKER_05

Toy Story.

SPEAKER_06

That is correct. We watched Toy Story, the original Toy Story.

SPEAKER_05

Number one. That is correct.

SPEAKER_06

Right. Do you know how old Toy Story is? It is 31 years old.

SPEAKER_05

31?

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, how old are you?

SPEAKER_05

Five. Yeah. I'm five and a half. I'm like five above half.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, you're about to be six, right? Soon. Very soon. Alright. Toy Story. Thoughts. What did you think about the movie?

SPEAKER_05

I liked it. I loved it. I love it so much.

SPEAKER_06

You liked it, loved it, loved it. Nice. Favorite part about the movie?

SPEAKER_05

When he gets captured on the and the the toys that are put together.

SPEAKER_06

When who gets captured?

SPEAKER_05

Belay and Woody.

SPEAKER_06

So, wait, your favorite part is when they got captured and so when they're in Sid's house with Frankenstein toys?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Oh really?

SPEAKER_05

Where they're put together and they help them.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, so you like that they would help them out?

SPEAKER_05

Yes.

SPEAKER_06

Those toys didn't scare you out? Scare you a little bit?

SPEAKER_05

No, I they don't scare me.

SPEAKER_06

Okay.

SPEAKER_05

They used to scare me, but now I watched it tons of times, so it doesn't scare me anymore.

SPEAKER_06

You know what's funny is that when this movie came out, you know how old I was?

SPEAKER_05

How old?

SPEAKER_06

I was five years old too.

SPEAKER_05

What?

SPEAKER_06

I know. That is just strange. I don't know what to say.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. I think it scared me when I was five. They were a little creepy. Like the one, the doll head with the missing eye and the spider legs. That didn't creep you out?

SPEAKER_05

Well, that's the f what the first time I watched it. I was like Yeah. I drum so high.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

My mommy saw me drum.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, so you've seen this before.

SPEAKER_05

Yes.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I think you've seen it a couple times. Because I think we've watched it together before. You watch it with your mom. So it's not your first time. But still a fun watch, yes?

SPEAKER_05

Yes.

SPEAKER_06

Yes. Would you recommend this to your friends?

SPEAKER_05

Yes. I tell my friends all about this.

SPEAKER_06

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_05

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_06

Did you have any parts of the movie that you didn't like?

SPEAKER_05

At first when he when mm, Woody and them were on the rocket.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, you didn't like that part?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Why not?

SPEAKER_05

Because uh because I was a little scared I was a little scared it really exploded.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, you thought it was gonna explode on them. That was a little bit stressful. I get that.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Any anything you want to say about the movie? Anything else you want to share?

SPEAKER_05

I don't know, but my theme my my really, really, really, really, really best pipe is when when it was when they recorded what they're saying, that was the really funniest pipe.

SPEAKER_06

Who recorded what what?

SPEAKER_05

Which part when the m his the kid's mom got stepped on the soldiers, that whole scene where they try to sneak up.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, in the beginning scene. That is a very cool opening scene. So you have the little toy soldiers, and they're sneaking from the upstairs in the bedroom to go down, and they want to they're using a walkie-talkie to tell Woody and her other toys what Andy got for his birthday, right?

SPEAKER_05

Right. And they because all of them were really scaled.

SPEAKER_06

Yes, yes. Alright.

Kid Rating Plus Friendship Takeaway

SPEAKER_06

One to ten. What number would you give this movie?

SPEAKER_05

We did that last time, but I'll give it a nine.

SPEAKER_06

A nine? Yeah. So you give Fox and a Hound a ten, but you give Toy Story a nine?

SPEAKER_05

Yes.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, interesting. Why? So you like Fox and a Hound better than Toy Story?

SPEAKER_05

Well, yeah, it's more interesting.

SPEAKER_06

Which one? Fox and a Hound?

SPEAKER_05

Yes.

SPEAKER_06

Really?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, but Toy Story, it's a little bit like rough and bumpy.

SPEAKER_06

Okay.

SPEAKER_05

Because like there's so many places scenes where it looks like they're gonna be dead, right?

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, there was some, yeah, there was some str yeah, some parts where it seemed like they were in some real danger.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, so so that's why. Those are the parts I don't like. That's why I said I hate the rocket.

SPEAKER_06

Because uh Yeah, you didn't want him to get hurt. Okay. What would you say Toy Story was about?

SPEAKER_05

I'm thinking it was about about the friendship.

SPEAKER_06

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_05

Friendship t is about the same thing as the fox and the hound.

SPEAKER_06

Not quite the same, 'cause for Fox and the Hound, they started off as friends, right? And then they grew apart. But for Toy Story, they started off as enemies, and then they grew together to become friends, right? It's still a story about friendship, you're absolutely right. But it's a little different than you know how Fox and the Hound approach.

SPEAKER_05

Well, wait. No.

SPEAKER_06

Okay. Tell me.

SPEAKER_05

The Fox and the Hound started f friends, then they grew as enemies, then they grew as friends again.

SPEAKER_06

Oh okay. Yes, the slight correction is technically at the end you could say that they did become friends again. But they weren't the same type of friends as when they started.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

So But they're but they saved us treadle, so that means they're still friends.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, yeah, that's true. That's true. Alright, so Fox and House still gets a 10, and now Toy Story, you give it a 9, right? Yes. All right. All right. Well, that will do it for our real talk, Malachi talk, on Toy Story. Yes, yep. All right. Well, thank you.
