More Gilded than Gold
Here on More Gilded than Gold we will be taking a historical look at one of the most transformational half centuries in American history. An era of extreme wealth, and abject poverty, and era of civil rights and violent oppression. An era of westward expansion, and increased urbanization. An era of immigration, and corruption. The post Civil War United States holds so many parallels to the Post WW2 United States and holds even more parallels to today. We will be taking a wide look at the United States from around 1865 to around 1901.

Episode 3: Battle Cry of Freedom Part 2: Expansion
When we last left off, we had discussed some of the leadup to the Civil War, namely the Nullification Crisis, and Nat Turner’s Rebellion and some of the actions made by southern legislatures after both events. Today we will continue our look into the leadup to the Civil War, focusing on The Mexican-American War, and the ensuing Compromise of 1850. We will also meet some important figures in our story going forward, including some names you might recognize, including an unknown congressman from Illinois named Abraham Lincoln.
