Welcome to the build for pressure podcast episode 110. I'm Zoran Stoikovic. Today we go beneath the strategy to the foundation identity. Identity is the internal operating system that dictates every choice you make. It is the silent code running in the background of your mind. The technical definition of identity is the integrated set of beliefs, experiences, and qualities that define how a person perceives themselves and their place in the world. In short, identity is the who that decides the how. A 2024 study published by the journal of applied psychology investigated the link between identity stability and performance under pressure so the researchers found that individuals with a strong central identity meaning they had a clear stable sense of who they were regardless of their current success showed significantly lower cortisol spikes when faced with professional failure. And I found this really interesting, which I wanted to share it with you because their value wasn't tied to a single outcome. They were more resilient. When you know who you are, the external pressure can't shatter your core. Nick Saban, one of the most successful coaches in the history of college football, hammered this home with his players. He famously said, identity is not what you do. It is how you do what you do. Saban knew that if a player identified as a professional, their actions would naturally align with that standard. Whether they were winning by 40 points or losing in the final minute, the identity remained the same. Therefore, the effort remained the same. The problem many of us face is identity diffusion, right? We let the expectations of our boss or family or social media define the map of who we are, right? We become a collection of other people's needs. When the pressure hits, this fragmented identity collapses because it has no solid center. To architect a high performance identity you have to conduct a ruthless internal audit i'm going to walk you through this step by step here so there are four diagnostic questions you can use to get clear on identity question one is what are my non-negotiables these are the boundaries you will not cross no matter how much money or status is on the line these are your hard-coded rules if you will. Question two, what would I do if I couldn't fail? This reveals your unfiltered ambition, stripping you or stripping like stripped of future noise and fear and judgment, fear of judgment. Question three is whose respect do I actually value? Whose respect do I actually value? Most of us are trying to impress people we don't even like. So filtering this noise allows you to focus on the signal that truly matters. And finally, question four, what's the one thing I want to be remembered for today? This is your singular quest in the next 24 hours. Now, I talk about self-reflection quiet a lot, and it's not a soft skill. It's a maintenance requirement for your hardware. If you don't define your identity, the pressure of the world will define it for you. You'll become a reaction of your environment instead of the commander of it. So build your identity, build an identity that's grounded in your values, not your trophies, right? Trophies can be taken away, your identity cannot. Today's invitation for application, take five minutes tonight and answer those four questions that I provided for you. About identity. And don't write a plan for the next five years, write a definition of who you are right now and how you feel about who you are at this moment. I'll see you next time.
