Welcome to the Build for Pressure podcast episode 127. I'm Zoran Stoikovic. Today we address the ultimate identity crisis. How to maintain your leadership and self-worth when you've been stripped of your starting role. Let's talk about David. David was a senior vice president at a major firm, the undisputed go-to operator for high consequence negotiations. His entire sense of self was built on being the guy who steps into the arena and closes the deal. Then a massive corporate restructure happened. David wasn't fired, but his division was sidelined and a new initiative took center stage. Suddenly, David found himself out of the primary rotation. He was, for all intents and purposes, benched. When he called me, his voice was hollow. He said, Zoran, if I'm not the one driving the revenue. Who am I even out there? Why am I showing up in the office? This is the psychological cliff of performance-adjacent identity. When your self-worth is entirely coupled with your active output, being sidelined feels like an existential threat. Whether you're an injured athlete watching from the sidelines or an executive unseated by an organizational shift, the trap is the same. You default to bitterness, isolation, and quiet quitting. Your singular quest for excellence gets hijacked by your bruised ego. But elite performance demands a strict separation between who you are and what you do. It requires identity before performance. To rebuild David's Edge, we initiated the protocol for informal leadership. When you don't have the formal authority of the ball in your hands or the lead seat at the table, your influence doesn't disappear. It changes shape. An informal leader is a force multiplier from the sidelines. They use their perspective to spot the vulnerabilities that the active operators are too overwhelmed to see. We shifted David's focus away from his own lack of visibility and toward creating mastery experiences for the junior executives who were now in the fire. He became the ultimate strategic advisor in the background, which was unreal. So he really anchored the team's preparation. Now, this is the act of self-worth decoupling. David stopped measuring his value by the number of deals he closed and started measuring it by the readiness of the people he supported. The result? His team's execution skyrocketed. And within six months, the board created a brand new executive role for him specifically. If you find yourself sidelined today, understand this. Your position on the bench is not a reflection of your capacity to influence the mission. You do not need to be holding the pen that is to dictate the strategy. Put down your resentment, stand up on the sideline, and amplify the operators who are currently in the fire. That is the true leadership. So execute this now. If you're currently benched or sidelined from a primary project, identify one active operator on the team. Spend 30 minutes today quietly analyzing their workflow or to provide them with one high signal piece of feedback they might've missed. Now, a memorable takeaway for you could be that a true leader's value is measured by the clarity they give to others, not the spotlight they claim for themselves. And a reflection question to end with, is your current commitment to the mission dependent on you being the star of the show? Is your current commitment to the mission dependent on you being the star of the show. Now, performance is a resource, right? So stop wasting yours on friction.
