Hello and welcome to Seven Minute Devotions for Busy Parents. I'm Kristen Clark, and I'm so glad that you are listening today. I am a busy parent just like you, and that's why I created this show because I want us to have a time where we can focus on God's word and who we are in Christ, and that's what this season has really been all about. So I just want to say thank you for being here through this journey. Today is our final episode in this Ephesians identity series. And I truly hope these episodes have encouraged you to understand more about who you are in Christ, what Jesus has done for you, and the purpose that God has placed on your life. So let's get into it. In our last episode, we introduced the armor of God and Paul's call for believers to stand firm. And today we're gonna look at the armor itself. So today's identity statement is this I am a warrior equipped with armor. So let's take a look at our passage today. We're gonna be reading from Ephesians 6, verses 14 through 17. Remember in verse 13, it said, put on the full armor of God. And so Paul begins describing the full armor of God, piece by piece. So starting in verse 14, it says, Stand firm then with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all of this, take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. You know, one thing that is important for us to note about this armor is it's both defensive and offensive. It protects us, yes, but it also equips us to stand our ground and to fight against the spiritual attacks and the lies that try to pull us away from God and his purpose for our lives. So Paul lists the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit. So we're going to talk about these. Something really interesting, though, about all of this armor is that none of it covers the back. Everything faces forward. In other words, this armor was made for standing firm and facing the battle, not turning around and running away. And honestly, I think sometimes we can ignore the reality of spiritual warfare because it feels uncomfortable or unfamiliar, or we don't really understand it. But pretending darkness doesn't exist does not make us safer. Paul wants believers to be aware, to be prepared, and to be equipped. So the first piece of armor he mentions here is the belt of truth. Truth is what holds everything together. Just like a belt secures and supports the rest of the armor, truth stabilizes everything else in our spiritual lives. And this is not our version of truth. It's not our truth, right? It's God's truth. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. We don't invent truth. We receive it from God and from his word. The next piece is the breastplate of righteousness. When I used to read this passage, I thought righteousness mostly meant good behavior or moral actions or good things, godly things that God wants us to do. But righteousness ultimately comes from Christ. It's his righteousness that covers us. And that breastplate is what protects the vitals. Because of Jesus, we are covered, protected, and made right before God. We are protected from God's wrath. And then from that righteousness flows the good works, the love, and the obedience that we live out. Next, we're looking at the shoes. These are the shoes fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. Roman soldiers wore shoes that helped them stand firm and move confidently through rough terrain. Some even had sharp studs at the bottom for grip and stability. And I love that image because the gospel gives us steady footing. We have peace with God. We have peace with others and readiness to move wherever God calls us. And that peace that we have comes from being repentant, comes from knowing the gospel and understanding that so we can be at peace with God and with others. The next piece of armor is the shield of faith. Paul specifically says it protects us from the flaming arrows of the enemy. And honestly, faith is often what the enemy attacks first. Just like we said in the last episode in that Garden of Eden story at the very beginning, when Satan tempted Adam and Eve, he said, Did God really say that? The enemy wants us to question God's goodness, his character. He wants us to question whether we can really trust God. And I want to say something important here. Having questions or moments of doubt does not mean you have failed spiritually. I've had seasons where I've wrestled with my faith, where I've wrestled with doubt or with discouragement. But even in those moments, God was still with me. And Jesus reminds us that even faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains. Our faith does not have to be perfect to be powerful. It simply has to be placed in Him, in Christ. The next thing that we are to wear is the helmet of salvation. A helmet protects the head, the brain, the mind. And salvation is that protection that we have on our mind because salvation gives us hope. It gives us assurance for whether we will be saved, whether we will spend eternity with God. It gives us confidence in God. It gives us security in Christ. Discouragement is one of the enemy's favorite weapons. So we have to guard our minds with the hope of salvation and eternity with Jesus. And finally, we come to the sword of the Spirit, which Paul tells us is the word of God. This is the only offensive weapon listed. Everything else protects us, but the sword is what equips us to fight back. And just like a soldier must be trained to use a weapon properly, we need to know God's word. We need to be trained and equipped to understand it. We have to read it, study it, apply it, not just listen to someone else explain it all the time. That's one of the reasons throughout the series, I've encouraged you over and over to open your Bible and read this for yourself because the Holy Spirit wants to teach you. When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, he responded with scripture. That's how he could fight back. So we need to do the same. We need to speak truth over our fear. We need to speak the word of God over temptation, over anxiety and discouragement. And if reading the Bible feels overwhelming for you right now, I understand that. But I want to encourage you, just start small. Leave it open on the counter or in a place where you're going to walk past it every day and read one verse when you walk past it and then another and then another and see if you can get through a chapter in one day. It may take you 20 minutes, it may take you 20 hours, but don't neglect reading God's word for yourself. Just let God's word continually pour into your life. As parents, this passage reminds us that our children need spiritual preparation too, not fear, not paranoia, preparation. Our kids need truth. They need faith. They need peace, hope. They need the word of God in their hearts and their minds. And one of the greatest ways that we can help equip them is by modeling what it looks like to wear the armor ourselves. Let your children see you pray, let them hear you talk about scripture, let them watch you trust God when life is difficult. Read the scripture for yourselves and read it aloud as a family because spiritual strength is not built accidentally or organically, like it just happens on its own. We have to cultivate it day by day as we walk with Jesus. God has equipped me with spiritual armor to stand firm, trust him, and fight against the enemy's lies. Because I am equipped with God's armor, I will daily fill my heart and mind with his truth and trust him to strengthen me. Let's say the identity statement one more time together. I am a warrior equipped with armor. Let's pray. God, thank you so much for not leaving us stranded, for equipping us with everything we need to stand firm. God, I pray you would help us to put on your armor daily. Teach us to hold tightly to the truth and to walk in peace, to trust you, to have hope in you, to protect our minds and to use your word wisely and faithfully. And God, I just pray that you would strengthen us and help us as parents to prepare our children to follow you and to love you and to trust in you. Thank you for walking with us through every battle we face. Thank you for your love and thank you for Jesus. In his name, amen. Well, friend, thank you so much for joining me through this entire journey in Ephesians. I truly hope these episodes have encouraged you to understand your identity in Christ more deeply and to recognize the purpose that God has for your life. You are not forgotten, you are not powerless, and you are not fighting alone. God has equipped you. We are going to take a short break for the summer, but I hope you'll continue going back through Ephesians, revisiting these truths, listen to episodes again and read them as you're following along. I think that'll be really powerful as you're studying and allow God's word to shape your heart and your home. Thanks so much for listening and remember who you are and who you belong to.
