SPEAKER_06All right, Clay County Sports fans. Randy Lefko here at Clay Today Sports Editor with Tim Mooney on the soundboard. By the way, Tim, we are watching uh the pre-launch uh stuff on our computer here.
SPEAKER_05So this is pretty neat. I mean, it's we got we're looking at a time. You know, I know it's recorded. I know we're not putting this out until Thursday, but you know what? 54 minutes until they launch to go back to the moon, and they haven't done that since you were what, four?
SPEAKER_06It's been a hot minute, so so uh, but by on the other side of the show, we got a couple of big stories coming up here. We got uh uh uh a special coach. He's not gonna be here. He didn't want to steal the thunder of our second guest. Actually, our first guest. He would have been our first the the second guest, but uh we got we got a wrestling national champion again in uh in Clay County, and uh he's gonna be with us with his coach, and I think his little sister's coming. Well there you go. It's a family fair if you're a family affair, and then uh but we got uh one or two weeks left for championship season, baby. Baseball, softball, weightlifting, and uh tracks coming up, so everybody's hot. Everybody's playing big teams right now to see where they measure, and uh our softball guys are going down to Kissimmee, three of them Oakleaf, Middleburg, and uh Keystone Heights, and they're going to be tested like no other. And uh that's what you want.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's I mean it's that time yeah. I can't believe it's already April. Yeah. This is we're gonna be next thing you know, in about three months, we're gonna be getting ready for football all the time.
SPEAKER_06Football. Well, I got all the spring games. I got a list of all the spring games, so we'll throw those out there and uh let people April 27th is uh first day of practice. So 25 days from now if you're listening to this recording.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. So, all right, cool. Well, we'll be back.
SPEAKER_06We're gonna we're waiting for our uh our uh launch and uh we'll we'll get started in a minute. All right, well, we'll be back. All right, Clay County Sports fans. Clay A Sports editor with Tim Mooney on the soundboard. We're talking national championships uh this time, uh Tim. Oh, even though we were what are we at? Uh Final Four for uh March Madness, Harry?
SPEAKER_05I qu I quit watching the tournament about week uh or round two because my every bracket I had was busted fast.
SPEAKER_06I know there was there was a lot of upsets here. So uh, you know, that's and I mean it'll segue good to where we're going because uh national championships are not easy to get. Well you like that? Like we had with no one are guests?
SPEAKER_05But Duke was supposed to get it this year, or Florida, or who the other I had Arizona, Florida, Duke. They just fired a Duke guy. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_06For two two choke, they call it two choke losses. Oh my gosh. Yeah. I mean, that was that was what was in the in the report.
SPEAKER_05It's just it's when you're a blue blood like that, you're supposed to win, but Coach K, you can't follow footsteps like that and try to win championships and expect championships after Coach K. So Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Well uh speaking of following footsteps. Here we go. Let's go with our let's introduce our guest. So we got uh we got Howard Colt Hill here, who uh won a little won a little wrestling tournament. We'll talk about it a little something there. He's a freshman wrestler over at uh uh St. John's Country Day, and we got his coach here, Hunter Hill, who's also his dad. Uh welcome, gentlemen. Tell me uh tell me how the week has been. Don't divulge, but tell me how the week has been.
SPEAKER_04Well, it's been surreal, man. It's been a wild ride. Um you know it it was a massive tournament that we were at, and the drive up, the drive back, and seeing all the other local wrestlers was really cool to see. And uh it was really cool to see the local coaches too, and uh coaches in in Colt's corner after you know his big wins. It's an amazing ride. So it's it's almost it's still surreal.
SPEAKER_06Colt, where have you come down from uh should we should we should we Doug Volge? Uh uh let's keep it reaching a little more. Yeah, we got we got another guest in here, a little little guest here. Amory Hill here. How old are you, Amory? I'm ten years old. Ten years old. And Amory, tell us who you are.
SPEAKER_00I'm Amory Rosehill, and I'm Colton's sister. Sister.
SPEAKER_06So when you heard about what happened at this little tournament that I went to, were you there?
SPEAKER_00Uh no, sir. I was watching him while my mom was screaming.
SPEAKER_05While your mom was screaming. Okay, well, I want to clarify she's probably screaming at the match, not screaming at call 911 or something like that. So let's make it sure.
SPEAKER_04I think people in the restaurant are about to call the cops. Oh, good.
SPEAKER_06Let me let me I always I always ask this question here about people who yell at TVs. Was your mom suggesting moves to your brother? Uh as if as if he could hear her.
SPEAKER_00She was like, push it, push it.
SPEAKER_05I do that for 49er games and my wife looks at me, she's like, What are you doing? They can't hear you. I'm like, you don't know.
SPEAKER_06They could. I saw I said, Hold uh, did you hear any of that? Did you hear any of the banter? When I were you were here in Orange Park, up in Florida, or you were in a restaurant. Where was it where was it?
SPEAKER_04She was in Jacksonville, I think, right? At that time.
SPEAKER_00I was in a restaurant with my.
SPEAKER_06Were you yelling too? Do you know anything about wrestling?
SPEAKER_00I was I uh I know a little bit about it. I'm not all in it.
SPEAKER_06So what did your brother do? We'll let her say you know what?
SPEAKER_05Let's let her give it to the crowd. Go ahead. What did he win?
SPEAKER_06What did your brother do?
SPEAKER_00He won first place as a freshman.
SPEAKER_06In what? Well, I went first place as a freshman in drag, but what did he win?
SPEAKER_00A wrestling tournament. I don't know.
SPEAKER_06What kind of wrestling tournament? How big a tournament was this?
SPEAKER_00Uh a pretty big one, especially. Like what?
SPEAKER_06He's the best at what level?
SPEAKER_00Before like seniors, I would say.
SPEAKER_06No, best at what level? So you got state champs, district champs, regional champs, then.
SPEAKER_00I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Carl, do you want to help you, sis here? Yeah, um, I won uh the national high school coaches association association uh national tournament. National champion right here, Jimbo. We had you weren't right off.
SPEAKER_05You were just he was number one still, so you're right about that.
SPEAKER_06And and uh and uh Anne Marie, how big is that? Have you won anything like uh a national championship, like cheerleading national championship or uh or uh uh Legos National Championship? What are they what do nine year olds do? Twelve year old? How old are you? I'm ten years old. Ten years old. Ten-year-old uh world championship of uh what was the last cheer comp that you were at?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, what was the last cheer comp? I just went to Jacksonville at Diamond and we got a paycheck of Bib to finals and first place in grand champion.
SPEAKER_06You got a paycheck?
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_06Like you got money? You got paycheck, baby? You got a paycheck? You didn't tell your dad?
SPEAKER_07NILS.
SPEAKER_06You're gonna have to pay some taxes on that, hunter. Did they call it a paycheck?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they did call it a paycheck. It was like a big sign.
SPEAKER_05What act? What act?
SPEAKER_06Oh, it's one of those, one of those, one of those things they show you when they're taking the big photo, like your like your bracket over there. So Colt, Colt, now that we got it cleared up, you spent what, four days in Virginia Beach.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_06National High School Coaching Association. I think I think PJ Cobbard is the last one who's won it, and I know Derek Miller was fifth in the sixteenth.
SPEAKER_04I gotta go back. I think Seaman Joseph won in 2007. If I but I gotta go back and look, he was a june he won it for the juniors, I think in 2007. Then PJ before him. But there's only been a couple. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Did you make it, Hunter?
SPEAKER_04No, wrestling club. Yeah, I was I was there when PJ won it. In 99, I was an eighth grader. I think I went two and two uh when I when I saw PJ win his. And then uh I think I'm pretty sure Steven won. I was in college when Steven won his, and then uh Derek Miller in 2016.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, Derek Miller, yeah. I mean, he was a very acrobatic tough guy. I remember he did a backflip on onto the map before the state championship he won. He won a state title.
SPEAKER_05You have to win a state championship after you. You have to do that.
SPEAKER_06I mean you come in there and you're blowing that up. That's uh that's a pretty big uh enchilada to to leave out there. So so called congrats on that when you went, and you and I talked about this. Now at your state meet, you finished third, and uh had some uh referee things maybe going on like that, but we you know you had to switch gears. Now, had you been to a meet at this magnitude, like Fargo or any of those? I know you go to a lot of meets, Louisiana, uh southern U.S.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, um we went to NHSEA, so last time we went was my seventh grade year. I competed in the middle school level. I did that at sixth and seventh grade year, and both years I um made it to the blood round and lost.
SPEAKER_06Blood round, you know what that is there, Timothy? Not a clue. And Marie, you know what the blood round is? That's if you lose, they cut a finger off. Oh, right. And then you go into the constellations. So the blood round, the guy explained that there, Colt. People may not know what the blood round is. Think we're talking about amputations or something.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the blood round for wrestling is the match before placement. So it would be the match two place or it's a make or break right there. It's not a dramatized.
SPEAKER_06So you get to quarterfinals and semifinals. Uh a win keeps you moving forward, a loss keeps you moving backwards, but they also you got third place, fourth place, fifth place, stuff like that. If you come home without the middle, that's that's the blood round. Yeah, you're still, I mean, if you're still placing fifths, sixth place of the nation, that's pretty dang good. I'm okay with that. Where did you finish there, Tim, when you wrestled? Uh actually, I Were you first in like uh Colk County in Utah?
SPEAKER_05No, I was Nevada, not Utah. And it was, you know, we don't talk about those days. 127 pound, Timmy was not a great guy to look at. Big head, braces, glasses, it wasn't a good thing.
SPEAKER_06So going into that from uh you had to restart your your mental preparation to go to a much bigger meet than the uh the the state meet. Tell me how that works going into the state meet. You got you got knocked out, you got back to the third, and I you know Tim knows, and I know this, uh I'm sure Coach knows this. I always say that the third place guy is the warrior because that's a tough route to get there. You win four on the on the other end, you're a state champion. This one you gotta win sometimes five, sometimes six, depending on the bracket. Uh so you had to retool to get the third. How is that is that a massive mental undertaking? I know physically it's cap you're capable of it unless somebody dings you, but uh the massive undertaking just to get the third. Talk about that, because I know we always talk about it, but I don't think anybody ever explained it uh outright. Now that he's telling us about the blood rounds not a finger amputation.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was I mean, it was a good twenty-four hours of me like recollecting myself. There was some dark moments after I lost that semi's match. Um but I you know, I came back and I was like, at this point it's all about having fun, you know.
SPEAKER_04I definitely got the text to prove that it was a dark time. Oh well.
SPEAKER_06Well, you know, because I there have been wrestlers in in our my time doing what I do in your time where the guy loses that and throws into town. Yeah, I didn't I didn't come here to get third, fourth, or fifth. It's all or nothing, and that's and then they don't they don't they don't segue that you know what third in the state of Florida of wrestling is not real bad. I mean it's not first or second, but you gotta be tough to get that.
SPEAKER_04N CAAs where Ferraris lost the semis and then they're just done. Peace out.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, well that was it would I know Fleming had a guy who walked out of the gym. Oh really? Really? Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I thought it was this year.
SPEAKER_06I'm like, no, no, years years ago. He walked out of the gym and and uh and and I'll be honest to this day he's he's still in trouble. I mean he just lost his way after that because he got he he got beaten. He thought that was the end of it, you know, and and other guys have gone back. Even even Paul, he got third his his uh junior year.
SPEAKER_04He took third when he was a junior.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah. And he wrestled a guy that looked like he was like nine feet tall, you know, because Paul was short for his thing. Yeah, yeah. But you know, he he found out from a South Dade kid how they trained in the offseason. And uh literally three days after the state meeting, he was running. He ran every day for the summer. And then when he came back, you know what he did in his thing. He's a great DC scorched everybody. And uh so so now you're you come home from that, you got your third place and whatnot. Dad says, Hey, we got a did you drive to Virginia Beach? Yeah, we got it. So he had like what uh what a 15-hour ride?
SPEAKER_04Homie has his driver's permit, and I asked him twice to help with the drive. No go, no go, dude. You gotta be chilling.
SPEAKER_05I gotta be mentally ready for the yeah. So so That's not a fun drive.
SPEAKER_06Oh, it's not a little bit more than a whole lot. Let's go back to that. You had you you had your state champion, Bryce Fuhrer, you know, smoked through his thing, kind of stuff. How come he didn't go to this, did he?
SPEAKER_04So Bryce was actually like Bryce was actually hit he was he was dinged up. He was hanging up, yeah. Yeah, he like he uh partially tore his hamstring of wicked districts.
SPEAKER_06Has he won it as a seventh, eighth grader? Did he middle school it?
SPEAKER_04Do you want Super 32? I don't know if he's won NHS CAs. I gotta check on that. I don't think he has. Um out to you might you might know more than me, Cole.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the last year we went together, he took second.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. He lost to like a Fargo finalist or something. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Oh wow. So so at this level, uh uh Hunter, and I asked you this question at the national level. How do you how do you what do you say? What did you say to him for that week and also for the drive that he's thinking about? I got third place, now I'm going up against nationally. I mean, you went against Utah, North Carolina, uh uh, who else? PA, Louisiana, Ohio, and they were all stuck. I mean, that's one of those things that everybody's good. There's nobody out there that's that's not a state champ, state runner-up, stuff like that. What's the process for you?
SPEAKER_04I think I saw a different kid the last day of state. Like he beat a state champ for third. That guy should like I I thought those guys, both Colt and him, would have been in the finals. And sticking him in the second period against against a major league skater who's got a really good coach, really good program, and he's one of states before like I just kind of backed off a little bit and just let us do his thing. Like, uh we're still coaching on technique and all that, but at this game, it's it's all that's in your head. And um, you know, I I think he found a good vibe to him. And at that point in time, what good coaches do is you back off and just let him do his thing.
SPEAKER_06So, so uh we're gonna we'll we'll break there on the wrestling. I just wanted to we we got a minute to go in this segment. I want to just let you know. Uh Coach Mike Pickett, St. John's Country Day, girls' soccer, icon over there, three-time national champion, 15-time state champion, has has stepped down from the program over there, Tim. I know. That's crazy. Almost 600 wins, less than a hundred losses in nearly 30 years of soccer. Told me he just wanted a new challenge in life. I asked him if he was gonna rock climb or something. He said, uh, probably not that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, probably trying to figure out what to do next would be the big challenge.
SPEAKER_06Well, he's got he's got a an elite club that he uh he trains and uh you know broke his kids in and out of different high schools and colleges and whatnot. What was your interaction with him? You've been there what three years?
SPEAKER_04Three years so far, been on campus two years, uh been the head coach for th for three years, but uh Mike's been an also got to lean on, just try to understand. One, you know, me coming from public to private, just figuring out the lay of the land. Um and just uh kind of a mentor. He's always there where I could talk to him, text him, call him. Um, and I try to mimic, you know, as much as you can. You know, girl soccer's not the same as wrestling, but like how to like organize a program, culture, things like that. Like he he's he's been around for a long time, man. You gotta pull from everybody and then like he's one of the guys, he's one of the great coaches in our area.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, one of the uh uh the Tom Lucas who we had on last week was the other one who said when he got there and uh baseball was kind of in its infancy, he uh he went to Mike and same thing, tried to mimic to get the young kids in, get them fortified, get them on the same terminology, and then by the time they're sophomores and juniors, uh, you know, you got them in a good spot where they're gonna listen to you, coach, coach up to you. We're gonna take a break, right? Okay, we're going to uh we're still watching the uh Artemis 2 on the launch pad. So we're gonna try and bring that in. I know this is uh gonna be broadcast tomorrow, but we'll we'll uh try and do a sports play-by-play as it does. We'll be right back. All right, after this. All right, Clay County Sports fan, having a bunch of fun here with some cool people.
SPEAKER_05Uh national we're always first of all, we're always having fun on this show. If somebody does not laugh while they're on this show, you're that's why we need a fourth segment, Tim.
SPEAKER_06No, stop. We can get some big sponsor here to get us four segments so we can just do this one of these three-hour programs.
SPEAKER_05Then we need our intern back so they can do the editing.
SPEAKER_06By the way, our intern, Chloe Burke, uh mishap on the flank football field tour and ACL. Oh, yeah. Yeah, she's on crutches, and uh so I think that's the end of her season there. They are still eight and oh. I think they're playing tonight.
SPEAKER_05Right now, yeah.
SPEAKER_06And uh they were ranked, they were ranked above Tampa Robinson for like a week.
SPEAKER_04Who did she play for?
SPEAKER_06For Clay. Chloe Burke, Miss Clay County, Miss Clay High School. But she uh she had her foot in the ground making a tag and got twisted and chipped it right out. So uh uh while we were out, the phones were lighting up on the the conversation with Coach Hill, Hunter Hill from St. John's. You got a son here, Colt, and uh Anne Marie, our special guest, uh 10-year-old uh wrestling phenom. Uh but we got another on the phone call. Who we got? Who's out there?
SPEAKER_01Hey, Randy, how's it going?
SPEAKER_06Who is this?
SPEAKER_01This is Colt's mom.
SPEAKER_06I'm the horn. So, you know, I was gonna, I'm going to uh I I gave I gave Hunter and he got a little he got a little tearful for me about uh when do you stop being coach and absorb it as a dad when it's happening? And we'll we'll talk about that later because I didn't want to you know get him start crying in the on the radio for us here. He was getting all emotional. But uh but uh Anne Marie outed you saying that you were yelling at the uh TV or the was it a live stream that you were watching?
SPEAKER_01I was I was watching actually on my phone, I was watching on Flow Wrestling.
SPEAKER_06Well, you're in a restaurant?
SPEAKER_01Uh during his finals match, yeah.
SPEAKER_05So nobody else was watching it with you, so you're just going to be aware of you yelling at your phone?
SPEAKER_01That is not entirely true.
SPEAKER_05That's not what we got told.
SPEAKER_01I was out to brunch with some friends of mine.
SPEAKER_06And Anne Marie.
SPEAKER_01And Anne Marie.
SPEAKER_06See, Anne Marie was our mole. We we sent her with you. And I actually we were in Taverna in San Marco, and I So a Richie Retro, not just not just the Wendy's on the drive-thru.
SPEAKER_01No, no, and I actually had my phone leaning up against the wall. So my friend Jill and my friend Adina got it.
SPEAKER_06Were they yelling at it as well? Like uh Ann Marie said you were uh like a like a scalded cat trying to trying to trying to see if uh if uh Colt could hear you through the phone.
SPEAKER_01They had never watched a wrestling match before, so this they had a lot of questions.
SPEAKER_05So they had they had no idea what you were like at a wrestling match at that point.
SPEAKER_06Well, I didn't say actually I've seen I've seen her at live matches and she's fairly composed. I think she's more worried about Hunter over there as he's flipping out on the sidelines there and uh blowing a big uh blood pressure over there, man. Uh, with the veins and the sweat coming up there, you think he's out there. Uh so tell me tell me how how that was for you to not what let me I don't want to can I ask why she wasn't there?
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Why weren't you the way Alexander? National Championship. I cut my leg off, I cut my leg off of that.
SPEAKER_01I know, I know. So, you know, obviously.
SPEAKER_06But I'll tell you, I'll tell you, there's a funny thing. Wait, wait, wait. When Paul was going for the the Nationals and Coast Guard up in uh uh Indiana, we were 30 minutes driving to the Coliseum when COVID shut it down. No way. And we didn't get the we didn't get to wrestle. Yeah. Oh, now what are we gonna do?
SPEAKER_03Man.
SPEAKER_06So all right, sorry. You're so you you uh you decided against going to watch your son wrestle so you can have dinner with Dina and Julia at the Berna restaurant, which uh, you know, probably is uh what uh six-month waiting time to get a reservation? So Colt is uh third on the uh priority list because Anne Marie was with you. You feeling bad now? So Colt, so so why is you watching it with your friends there and getting all frenzy? What what's what's going through your head as he's uh getting you know you only watch the final in the restaurant?
SPEAKER_01Yes, I only watched the finals. I was home at home uh for his semis match and the quarterfinals match.
SPEAKER_06So you decided to go in public with it?
SPEAKER_01Well my defense, I had a ha I had already planned brunch with my friends.
SPEAKER_06Oh, gosh. Oh, so Colt, you can't upset that. Oh man, we're gonna lose so many fans in this. Alexander used to be a friend of mine.
SPEAKER_01Great it.
SPEAKER_06Hunter said it was okay to ask you that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, when he when he won a semi's match, um, I thought about canceling brunch and I was like, you know what? No, I'm gonna go, and this way I'm around other people and they could experience this moment with me, and I think they enjoyed experiencing the moment with me.
SPEAKER_06What what was the experience that they were sharing? Let me ask you that as a as a mom. I was a mom who's watched this guy battle probably well for what six years maybe?
SPEAKER_04I mean, he's been wrestling since four or five years old. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Ten years, ten years, yeah. So this one, this one being kind of the pinnacle, because we still got three or four more. So uh what goes through the mom's mind? Don't get hurt.
SPEAKER_03Why do you think I why is that guy crossfacing him?
SPEAKER_06Because uh Hunter told me about one crossface that looked like a right cross to my face.
SPEAKER_04That was a bad one.
SPEAKER_01The finals match I'm watching his head get beat get pounded on the mat, and even my friends were like, Who can they do that? He's gonna come home with with a bruise on bruises on his face and scratches on his body and triggers.
SPEAKER_06Bryce had the black eye when he had been So so so when he came back, or did he call you? Because you know every time a football guy gets on TV, they say hi mom, they don't say hi dad. When did you get to talk to him after it was over?
SPEAKER_01Um, I called a couple hours afterwards and talked to Hunter and Colt on their way home, and then I saw them that night. And um to give them their space.
SPEAKER_05Okay. I know why she didn't go. I already know this right now. It's Virginia. That's she didn't want to go up there.
SPEAKER_04That's why is that a 12-hour drive? It was about nine and a half ten.
SPEAKER_05And it's still to Virginia. Not the cool part of Virginia.
SPEAKER_07So Virginia Beach.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. It sounds luscious and great and everything, but it I I was up there a couple times for deployments, and no. I'm glad I never went up there.
SPEAKER_06Co what was going through your mind? Did you think and did you inherently feel your mom's energy? Let's go there.
SPEAKER_02I don't think I did.
SPEAKER_06Of course, dad's over there chewing your ear out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um, yeah, I I don't think I did, but you never know. I could be wrestling. Oh, I could be wrestling so long that it's just a natural feeling. Oh, good answer.
SPEAKER_06All right, well, Alexandra, we appreciate you uh concurring and Marie's uh uh uh um thoughts about what how it looked to her from her side of the table there. And uh congratulations. I know he's a great kid, great uh great upbringing, and and uh always always a pleasure to talk to him. But uh go back go back to work.
SPEAKER_01I think I think it's important that I should note that I will be going to Vegas with him.
SPEAKER_06Well, I would I would uh I would rather go to Vegas and Virginia too. What is that?
SPEAKER_04So there's there's there's a U.S. Open that will uh if he does good enough, he qualifies for the world trials. Nice.
SPEAKER_06So does winning this tournament give you like entry into other Fargo and all that kind of stuff?
SPEAKER_04Well, Fargo, yeah, there's qualifiers for that you have to do with USA wrestling, but what this does is it gets some kind of like a green light and most prestigious service. Yeah, some street credit. So he I put an application for Iron Man, and then I put an application in for Beast of the East, and then we're gonna try uh Escape the Rock, and then there's a fourth one I put I'm um power eight, I'm gonna try to put him in for two. Umrest, huh, Cole? Well, these are the things.
SPEAKER_06What do you do for fun?
SPEAKER_04It is surfing. You know we took him out of Maui, a little bit of surfing, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Well, you were close enough to get to uh what is it? What is uh the big North Carolina the Outer Banks?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. No. Although there's sharks there. No, not even close. Virginia. If you've never been to Virginia Beach, it's right underneath of it. There's a place called Mount Trashmore out there for a reason. Oh Lord. I'm just leaving it there. I was never stationed out there, we just left for deployments out there, and I'm glad that was all I did. In Virginia? In Virginia. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_06So it's well that's what outer banks is North Carolina. That's a that's a primo primo surf spot. Downwind from Virginia.
SPEAKER_04We stay pretty close to our Airbnb most of the day. Good.
SPEAKER_06So we're into where what do we got time-wise here? Can we uh we got about four minutes? We still got there. She's still there.
SPEAKER_07You didn't I'm listening now.
SPEAKER_06Oh I thought you were working. Oh, okay. We got so so uh Colt, let's talk about some of this stuff here. You get in there, the first one, you're up 12 to 2 on a guy from Ohio, and you stick him at 521. Yes? Yeah, yeah. Okay, what's his and so so in that one, Thomas Gorsky is his name. And uh in that one, where's your confidence go there? Because now, you know, you're coming in, you you had a good week of practice, you come in, bang, you you take this guy out, and you're going into the next round. What was what was the feel coming off the man? Okay, I'm I'm feeling good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I was so glad that I won that one. Like it felt so much pressure come off, and then after that, I I mean that match, if you go back and watch, is not the best.
SPEAKER_04Ray would be just laying on the floor like like looked like he was gassed out, but you can just tell it was the pressure just off of him.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, just come off the shoulder. So then the the next round you went up against a PA guy, Pennsylvania gr I think it was Garrett Chittinen. I couldn't pronounce that. Or whatever it was, and you got him nine to two. You didn't pin him, right?
SPEAKER_02Just a nine-two. Was he a little tougher? Not necessarily, just bigger body. Took a lot more to move him around. Um you know, but I got some great partners that have that exact same build.
SPEAKER_05You're just showing off, showing you can pin somebody, you can win by points, it doesn't matter, you're gonna win.
SPEAKER_06At this level, and uh for for both of you, at this level, do is is it do you do you go risky or do you go with the lady that you brought to the dance? I mean your your power is your scrambling ability, your your cardiovascular, your endurance in there. So do do you go stay with that, or do these guys offer something that you know we gotta change some tactic here?
SPEAKER_04How much of a So it it it depends on who he's who he's going against. Like um we we had some great uh great guys back here that were able to there's poor reception in this place. So we try to like scout the next couple guys. He doesn't do the scouting. I do the scouting because he he just would rather just you know, yeah, not not get nervous about it, find out on the matter. So like the North Carolina guy he in this he had in the semis wants to win big, big, big. So like we kept that match close and we saw the kid break the second period, and we wrote him out, scored back points, and then um versus the PA guy in the finals, we just we just got after him. And he didn't he he had was not expecting that. Yeah. So like Cole has his he's he's pretty diverse what he can do. He can he can slow a match down if he wants to, if he needs to weather the storm and just hang tight, or you know, if we need to get after it, we got after it.
SPEAKER_06Now what was your what was your record after the state? How many? 51 and 9. Nine? Yeah.
SPEAKER_0451 and nine, something like that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06So so of the nine, did any of any of these guys get close to the level of the nine? Because I would I'm I'm segueing to how does Florida stand up against the rest of the country here? Because you have Ohio, Louisiana, Utah, and North Carolina in there as far as who you and PA in there.
SPEAKER_02Wrestling how I did at NHSEAs, um I I think I would have beat at least seven out of those nine guys here in Florida.
SPEAKER_05Nice.
SPEAKER_02Oh there's probably two guys that I'm like, you know what? Like a Jesuit kid that's like he's pretty good. Um, but uh if I wrestled how I did at NHS ES, I don't think I would have to be able to do that. What's the team level?
SPEAKER_06I know Middleburg was down there, and and I know their girl, Sarah Walsh, she finished at seven and two, and she she's pretty good. Yeah, she wrestled some monsters. She had a three-time state champ from Massachusetts in uh in her uh such a crazy turn. Late one. And she had a Utah girl that was fifth, fifth in the state, and New England state champ. I mean, just monster. But she went through and had one, two, three, four, four pins before she uh lost uh by pin. She won a 17-nothing uh major decision and then got pinned in the first by this three-time state champ from from Massachusetts, who was a New England champion as well.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because they combined the states up there for their championships, right? Yeah.
SPEAKER_06So how's that how does Florida stay up?
SPEAKER_04So uh you know with the numbers came up. Well, we gotta take a break. We'll be right back with that one.
SPEAKER_06Hold that thought, Hunter. Alexandra, you still there? All right.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I'm still here.
SPEAKER_06We'll be back after this. All right, final segment. I'm Randy Lefko, Play Day Sports Jet of Clay County Wrestling Report now by Timbo. We didn't even get to the other stuff.
SPEAKER_05It's a family affair today, so St.
SPEAKER_06John's uh taking it up here with Mike Pickett, and uh now we got the Hills over here, Anne Marie sitting tight, getting us some uh cheerleading stuff. We got uh nine minutes left on the Artemis 2. So at some point, if it gets up in the air while we're here, we're gonna have Tim do a little play-by-play on it. So let's go back to the national sear. 7,000 wrestlers, you said, Coach, right? Yes, sir. So one out of 7,000 in Clay County. How about that? That's crazy. Has that dawned on you yet what you did? No, not really. Does St. John's Country Day know? I mean, do you know you walk through the hallways and they have like banners or did they say so?
SPEAKER_04Do they say something in the We had a big so we we gave them Monday off? So like I I went to school Monday, I gave Monday off, and then Tuesday with a big announcement at the beginning. They they do a really cool thing at the beginning of the school day. They do it in the square, yeah. They do in the square, everybody says the pledge. Every kid in the school's there, and they they brought them up, and Coach Cromola does a good job of promoting it. You know, so yeah, it was cool.
SPEAKER_05How did you feel about being like the center of attention that day in school?
SPEAKER_02Uh it it felt pretty good. Did it? You know, finally get my turn. Oh yeah. Finally get my turn. You know, Bryce got all the glory for a little bit.
SPEAKER_05Right on. So I mean, it's one of those you're like, hey, it's me. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06The third place guy. Yeah. Right on. So when you're when let's we'll we'll do a quick back to the uh the championship there. You you had a North Carolina guy that was a stud, state runner-up, you had a Pennsylvania guy that was a stud. Going into that, you did you feel your energy level and your mental uh uh capabilities were up to the task? You've been dominating up to that point. A couple of third period pins or 6'4 in your uh is that your semi-final that's your quarterfinal quarterfinal against a good guy from you.
SPEAKER_04It was a really close match.
SPEAKER_06So after that one, how do you I mean, as a freshman, you know, you're like a freshman. Yeah, there's no other way to put it, you're a freshman. That's it, that's all you gotta say. But to to to gather up the strength in your in your head to say, alright, I'm a freshman, I'm going into possibly a state or a national championship.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I kind of after I won my quarters match, I mean, I was laying down like I was gassed. That was a tough match. But I got off the mat, I went outside, and I was like, all right, and I kind of sat back and was like, I'm gonna leave it all into God's hands now. You know, we're going into the semis. We'll see how we do it.
SPEAKER_06Tim always wants to know, what do you eat? Oh, yeah. That's one thing. Okay. Because Tim's a CrossFit guru. Yeah, he's the fitness kid. No, but between the the after the semis at the tournament day? Yeah, not tournament day.
SPEAKER_05It's teen, I got teenager at home. I know what they eat every day, but you're talking about tournament day.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05You're not chunking Twinkies and uh when you're done with weigh-ins, everything's done, you're able to relax.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so now that well, this tournament wasn't a multi-day weigh-in, so what I've done is like I'll have a bagel, I'll toast it, put some butter on it, cut up um or peanut butter, cut up a banana, put some honey on it, and like save that for later, or eat one now and save it the rest for later, and then I'm a big energy drink guy. I'll I'll I'll chug down a cell phone. It must be nice to have good kidneys. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Because we've had we've had you remember uh uh Lindsay? Lindsay Lee? Yeah, Lindsay Lee in your day. That's all her. Yeah, yeah. She came in, yeah. She came in when she was like one of the top-ranked cross credit. She's killing it. So she came in and gave us a nice nutrition thing on how to feed the monster kind of for these multi-hour, multi-day.
SPEAKER_04Probably doesn't include a Celsius.
SPEAKER_05It doesn't. No, I didn't think so. I didn't think so. Lindsay chastises me every time when I get Starbucks. But this is Starbucks with protein in it, so I get my protein intake.
SPEAKER_06So very cool. There's in the uh from the Middleburg ranks, a Fallon Dames, another freshman, 114, up there with the girls, went three and one on her first one. Then uh then she won, got a pin and a and a 30-second pin, but then went up against a uh uh Jasmine Villagas from uh Toomes County, Georgia, second in the state for Georgia, and lost that one to end her day. But Toombs County, wouldn't it? Isn't that a scary thing? Yes. She's from the Toombs. Probably right next to Hazard County. So he had uh also uh Nathan Harvey was there, Jonathan Harp was there, Truman Dames was there, her seventh grade, seventh grade brother. He he went two and two, got a couple guys from New York or Virginia, Porter Loveland from uh Middleburg, the state runner up at 220. He had three monsters on his roster. Three state champs, South Carolina was one, the guy he lost to was from Virginia, and another guy was from uh Georgia, Tony. Uh uh Sarah Walsh, we talked about seven and two, Terry Mielan was there. Abigail Harvey, seventh grader from Lake Asbury Junior High, also Nathan's uh little sister up there, got up there and got three matches in. So, you know, that's that's a that's a pretty good deal for our county. Coach Call's done a great job, man. I like him. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05We definitely got some Clay County bragging rights going on.
SPEAKER_06So I know, man. You we you talk about how this uh this this year, coincidental with being on our show, we're producing champions, man.
SPEAKER_05I mean, we have it's instead of we always talk about Val Dosta saying they're Title Town. Um you know what being a town's pretty big, but put it in Title County. Yeah, yeah. That's what we do.
SPEAKER_06I think uh Cole might be our first national champion. That is, he is our first one. Because we were gonna have uh uh Noah Chemchuk was coming on board, but he got sick. He had some kind of thing, confiding his mom. But he's uh he could be a two-time uh record setting uh weightlifter stage.
SPEAKER_04I remember solid. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06He totaled 700 at the county championships, and the 285 and the 215 were 680, 690. He weighs 169.
SPEAKER_05Good God.
SPEAKER_06Wow, nuts. Good God. Well, are you ready to take a breath? We're gonna go quick uh quick baseball. How much time do we get on the launch? Three minutes left.
SPEAKER_05We got 330. Go ahead and take your breath.
SPEAKER_06All right, here we go. Go! Baseball. Uh St. John's and Clay had uh double battle there. Actually, it was a much better game than uh was was uh good for Clay because they had them both games. St. John's won both of them in the sixth and seventh inning, but Clay was right with them. The big the big surprise, I think, and I dropping a name is Lucas Moore, senior pitcher for uh for Clay, battle with Braden Harris. Harris getting a lot of play for his uh pitching up there, but Lucas Lucas went toe-to-toe with the St. John's batting lineup, and uh they were up 2-1 in the sixth inning, and uh he got taken out, and then uh I think it was a walk-off walk. Oh, they call it. Yeah, a walk-off walk is worth almost as bad as a walk-off balk. Yeah, and then uh Rilla McMahon came in on the f on the Friday game, and he had it going too. There was three to one, and then uh St. John's won that one six three. Well, St. John's going now. Now let's go to Clay. Clay doesn't get any easier for them. They got Trinity Christian Academy. I think today, I think today, Thursday and and Friday, Trinity just winning the National High School Championship Tournament against a team Baylor from Tennessee, ranked ninth in the USA, but Trinity just beat them. So uh Coach Persinger over there has got some some tough rows to hoe. Uh St. John's going to Bishop Kenny. Actually, they're playing tonight. They had a loss yesterday to or Tuesday to Bowles, 3-2. So there is some uh some mortality there. Uh Orange Park 10-9 goes to Ed White, 12-5 tomorrow. They had a they had a good game with Middleburg. My boy, my I talked to my guy Alan Burnson at Middleburg, and I said, I hope I'm not jinxing you, man, because you're 14-4, and you've won district and region titles with less than stellar records, so now you're 14-4. You got to live up to it. Let me tell you one thing, for uh St. John's, they got five homers for Mason Jones, three homers for Madden Williams, and three guys with two homers each. Jeez. I mean, uh Jonah Jonah Cole, Preston Cole, Hunter Rogers, and uh and uh Casey Johns, the guy we had on there. So there they got they can strike at any time over there. Although for Clay, it was JC Rosette who almost created the comeback in the second game with a with a nice blast in the seventh inning, but it uh they didn't go out of there. Pleasant Island 14-7. It's got Beachside and then uh Bartsham Trail, two uh top-ranked teams. So uh Coach Mike Martino gonna come back for that. Middlebury 14-4. They got St. Augustine who just beat Clay 1-0. So uh, you know, everybody's everybody's getting into playoff mode. They got a couple of last-minute non-district games to kind of test the test the rubber, test the uh acceleration. Softball. Oakleaf, Middleburg, and Keystone are going down to Kissimmee for the Kissimmee Classic. And uh that is a collection of state ranked state championship teams. Middleburg has the unenviable task of taking on Bartow High, which is a 6A superpower. They won a bunch of state titles and then uh go there. Now they have the momentum against them because they lost to Williston and Creekside in seventh inning uh antics. Kind of a wild pitch against Creekside. They lost three to two. And then they had a bases, I think they had two two on base and uh and a strikeout to end that game at 5-4. But uh hot for them has been uh Madison, Strickland, Emma Wood, and Izzy Piffer with doubles, doubles, and doubles.
SPEAKER_05Oh, wait, we got we got about 15 seconds for the Artemis 2.
SPEAKER_06We got a little smoke coming out of the side of the uh missile here. We'll keep going. OP 5-9. OP's got three wins in a row. Uh coach Letail is getting some bat play there.
SPEAKER_05We got ignition.
SPEAKER_06Clay is at 5-10. They had some big, big uh bats, 12-2 for 15-01. There we go.
SPEAKER_05Artemis 2 is launched from the pad. And the screen is gone. They cleared the tower, they are go. Wow, that is magnificent. There we go. This is one of the cool things about being in Florida. We can go outside right now in the next 30 seconds and see this launch going on. And this is something I my first time getting to do this. We're talking about history right now, and this is a lap around the moon, and then this is practice to go back to the moon. And this is something that's pretty cool. I'm glad we got younger generations in here seeing me.
SPEAKER_04Really cool.
SPEAKER_05So they're clearing, they're getting ready to go through, they're gonna do a roll here in a minute, drop the boosters, they'll be in outer space, and it's just gonna be wow. It's just the magnitude that goes into this is pretty amazing to me. How I mean, Randy, you were alive when Yeah, with the challenge.
SPEAKER_06I was teaching a class in Upper Marion High School. Were you really? I was gonna talk about it. Blew up, and we thought, was that the booster getting and then all of a sudden everybody went uh it's kind of crazy when you see the clamps that when they come back?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, wow. All right, they're cleared it, they're going through, they're going up in the atmosphere. That is just crazy. They're saying right now, I was doing reading the numbers because I love math. $110 million just to do one launch. $25 million back enough, possibly. Just for the gas? Just for the prices right now, probably.
SPEAKER_06Oh, look at that.
SPEAKER_05No, no, no, no. It's just the exhaust and not fire. You can't say fire when it's something going on like this. Oh, is that what that is, man? Yeah, that's just all that exhaust, and that's the engine going. So it's pretty cool. I mean, we're actually I call it live because we're all breathing and heartbeating right now, but we're gonna put this tomorrow's show. But we get to talk, I get to talk about this live. That's pretty neat.
SPEAKER_06How's this measure up cult to coming off the mat with a gold medal?
unknownI don't know.
SPEAKER_06It's pretty it's pretty cool. Yeah, yeah. Amory, have you ever seen the launch live? Uh, you gotta tell dad, take you down to Cape Canaveral. I my brother and I sat in a McDonald's years ago and watched one go up. And uh was kind of he flew in from uh Colorado when we drove down there. It was cool. Stayed in the in a Hotel 6 with the uh shower curtain that's stuck to your leg when you drove. All right, let's finish the wraparound. So we got uh what we have. Fleming Island got two losses going on, and they're gonna come back. Uh they lost to Ridgeview. My girl uh Angela over there's got the Jekyll and High team again, like they did uh l last the first year she was in when she won the uh the district championship. Track, we got a couple of hot oh, let's go to the districts of weightlifting are coming up next week. We got Oakleaf, Middlebury, Oakleaf 3A, Middlebury, Ridgeview going to Suwanee, Clay, OP, Fleming Island going to Eulie, and Keystone's gonna host theirs on April 9th, April 8th is uh is the Clay one, April 11th, so that's coming up big. All the districts are next couple of weeks. You got track coming April 20th, tennis, April 13th, flag, uh Clay High still undefeated, ranked in the top five in the state with a couple of studs, April 20th. LaCrosse has got two more games coming. Uh Izzy Marks, the uh career scoring leader for Fleming Island in 16 is the coach now over there. They're 10 and 4, got two more teams left, won a major battle with uh district guy at Beachside, softball is coming up at the end of the month, baseball is coming in April 14th for uh for districts. Beach volleyball, Middleburg and Claire are both in that. It's kind of a club thing, eh? Because none of not all the schools have it. So uh uh Middleburg's in that. They're gonna go April 20, 23, lacrosse has got Fletcher tonight and Nice tomorrow. So uh there you go. That's uh that's the wrap around there. Tennis, uh, where's tennis? Tennis is April 13th and 14th. Uh we know we got the kid from uh no uh no uh Noah Hyatt over to Fleming Island with a state runner up as a freshman. That's crazy. And uh he's still playing well, and uh, you know, they're they're they're getting ready to crank it. And they got Karen Baird, is the girl from Fleming Island that was on a doubles team that went to the state, got to the state semifinals. So she's playing well as a singles. And your girl, Kelly Barang.
SPEAKER_04Oh, she's awesome.
SPEAKER_06I've heard she went to state, yeah. She's a tough kid, played soccer, was uh a tough kid on the soccer. What's going on? What is that?
SPEAKER_05They're just it's NASA's view of it. They're heading straight to the moon, they're good. Nice. Colt, final thoughts. What do you think?
SPEAKER_06On her cheer? On your whole family being uh big time, big time, uh, big time here. Yeah, we should she should be wrestling.
SPEAKER_02We're a wrestling family. Maybe my room our garage is filled with match. That's right, she's trying to wrestle between the wrestling.
SPEAKER_06The Grapple Academy? Is that what you got from that garage?
SPEAKER_04When we started at St. John's, they didn't have a wrestling room. I wasn't on campus, so we uh it's Colton Kevin.
SPEAKER_06Grapple Academy, they call it a garage.
SPEAKER_04And we just in the garage, and didn't matter if it was if it's a hundred and two hour practicing, if it was forty degrees out, we'd figure we'd bring in heaters and warm.
SPEAKER_06As a as a as a start for the program to have this kind of elevation within the third or second year, right?
SPEAKER_04It's just our third year. Third year.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it's uh puts a big target on your back, hunting. And and you too.
SPEAKER_04But you know it it we knew that this was going to be the uh the path that we're gonna take. You know, you know, we had two kids our first year uh with Colt and Kevin, and then you know, Colt got injured postseason last year.
SPEAKER_06Well Kevin Kevin's a flagler, right?
SPEAKER_04He's got three third place finishes, great kid, great family, great team. Kevin McClain. Yeah, yeah, I remember. And um, you know, I always thought this would be the uh the path. You know, this The vision is that we're we're gonna win with a few guys to start and then look out. Lay the foundation.
SPEAKER_06All right, good stuff there. Hunter Hill, thanks for coming, Colt. Congratulations, Anne Marie. Get up there and do some push-ups. Timbo, what do you think? We got uh we uh we're gonna give a final farewell to Mike Pickett, girls soccer coach over there. Great career there. I got to cover probably 20 of his 28 years of been here. So that's awesome.
SPEAKER_05He's got a great coaching tree coming out because there obviously there's a bunch of coaches coming to him to figure out how to do it right.
SPEAKER_06So success builds success, right? So we'll be back next. Don't forget Thursday, seven o'clock, Friday, five o'clock, Friday, five o'clock, Spotify, Apple, all that kind of stuff. That's it. There you go. And the launch is the launch is done.
SPEAKER_05Launch is done.
SPEAKER_06Thanks, guys, for coming in and uh have a great day.
SPEAKER_05Thanks for having us, guys.
