SPEAKER_02That's what I'm talking about.
SPEAKER_01And it's here on Clay Radio every uh Friday between uh noon and one, and then again uh nine till ten, and on Saturdays and Sundays at seven, plenty of times to be able to tune in. You're welcome. And you get frequent fire miles, so the more you listen, the more miles you get. So keep listening going, man. Hey, it's uh Mike Sulla here with Kurt Town there. Hey! Freddie Oka there. Salutations! And we got a heck of a show for you. Not quite sure what we're gonna do just yet, but we'll figure it out as we always do. We do. It is national eat your beans day. Ho ho ho! And it's also national don't drive in the car with him if he ate his beans today. The same day. Same day.
SPEAKER_02Beans, beans, good for your heart.
SPEAKER_01The more you eat, the more you can drive them alone, is basically what happens there. It's national drop a rock day. I know Freddie's see Freddie's obsessed with who paid $995 to get that on the calendar.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01Why couldn't it be skip a rock? It's just drop a rock. Drop a rock day. And something a little more pleasant, National Independent Beer Run Day. I didn't make them up. And I didn't pay the $995 to get that up there. No wonder this country's in a deficit.
SPEAKER_00I don't have enough of my car payment. I've got enough to make me a national holiday.
SPEAKER_02And if you if if you're buying them flying.
SPEAKER_01There you go. Well, today I thought we talked a little bit about part-time jobs that we've held. And I'm sure there's some beauties amongst the three of us. Also, uh, I got a little weird science thing that I'd drop in at some point. I like weird science. About whales. It's about whales. Okay, so keep that in mind. That's good. I'm waiting just seeing if it's going to resolve itself or are you going to go into another movie? I missed the button. I'm sorry. I love that movie, though.
SPEAKER_02That's a great movie.
SPEAKER_01And Kelly LeBac. And then uh Fourth of July stories.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I'm sure everybody's got a story with uh you know involving fireworks or something to that effect. So and of course, as always in this segment, and people now starting to request Freddie to do the dad jokes.
SPEAKER_02It's not just me requesting it. Tremendous fan.
SPEAKER_01Pretty soon I'm getting booked at the Food Truck Fridays. You'll be up there with uh OMG It's Wix.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you never know, man. It could happen.
SPEAKER_01And he'll be doing the flip phone, but before the flip phone, I got my man Freddie doing the dad joke. That's right. Pulling off my pager.
SPEAKER_02Right. Hey, look, I got booked and it was Kurt Town and Tales to the Westside. I never thought in a million years that that would be a thing. They thought that was your band, though.
SPEAKER_00That's funny.
SPEAKER_01That's funny because my uh my wife's uh cousin used to have a band when when they were teenagers, and and they couldn't remember the name of it. It was like the Travelers of Time or something. So anyway, so uh years later, I started dating my wife, and uh she said, Oh yeah, Robbie's got a band or whatever, and and uh it was a party, and some of the band was thrown up in the corner. I said, Oh, that's Robbie and the dry heaves. That's a good name, actually. I like that's and then you have a good story. Be like, where did that name come from? Well it's true, that's right. That's where it came from. All right, so let's get in. Are we ready? Let me just double check here. Okay, we have make sure all of the proper uh uh so we're ready to go here. All right, Freddie. It's uh the floor is yours.
SPEAKER_02I do have someone that are kind of demented, but oh no, family friendly. It is family friendly, Freddie.
SPEAKER_00Did you hear about the kidnapping at school? No, he fell asleep. It's okay, he woke up. Oh, and he almost was on the right track there. Yeah, yeah, you anyway.
SPEAKER_02That was a wet.
SPEAKER_00What did the fish say when he ran into the wall? I don't know that's a good one. Very good.
SPEAKER_02I'm easily amused. That's why we like you.
SPEAKER_00What do you call a group of killer whales who play instruments? I don't know. An orchestra. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02See how it's leading into your whale stuff. Yeah, yeah. Wagga, wagger, wagger.
SPEAKER_01And so there is uh a story with the whale. See, right? I've got weird science whale news. Uh do you know how scientists can tell how old these whales are? And this is not a joke, it's just there's a way that they can tell that. Uh very much like trees have rings, right? Whales have uh rings as well. Okay. And um but it's earwax.
SPEAKER_02Oh man.
SPEAKER_01Earwax actually causes so they can count down the about every five hundred years or uh some five hundred days or something, it forms uh so they can count backwards.
SPEAKER_03Wow.
SPEAKER_01That's a hell of a q-tip. Yeah. I was just thinking that what if what if they yeah, we had to do that with humans? Could tell. You know, they look in your ear with that thing and oh yeah, look at that.
SPEAKER_02You just see light on the other end of mine, they're like, hey.
SPEAKER_01He must be about 500 years.
SPEAKER_02There's a tunnel straight through there. It whistles.
SPEAKER_01So I just thought that was sort of interesting. But uh whales had earwax. Who knew? Who knew?
SPEAKER_03Who knew?
SPEAKER_01But like Freddie said, it's a rather large Q-tip. Q-tip.
SPEAKER_03Getting grinding and out of there.
SPEAKER_00I don't want to be the one to do the Q-tipping. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, anyway, we've got uh lots more uh great laps for you coming up as well as more interesting tidbits uh here on the um program. So don't go too far away. This is uh your town rocks.
SPEAKER_02Your town rocks.
SPEAKER_01This town this town rocks. And when I say this town rocks, uh you know this town rocks.
SPEAKER_02This town rocks.
SPEAKER_01It's still your town.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_01This town. This town rocks. TTR, as we like to call it. And by the way, it's show number 24. Wow. Show number 24. We'll have uh more of it, we hope. We hope before they give us the hook and drag us out of here. But this is This Town Rocks here on Yep, the cure gets us started for uh segment number two here on the program. This Town Rocks. At least that's uh what I'm saying at this point in time. Almost anything can happen here. Almost anything can happen. This town rocks, yep. And uh you're listening to it on uh your very favorite radio station, Clay Radio.
SPEAKER_02That's right.
SPEAKER_01And of course you can listen to it uh by uh logging in at uh clay radio.com. That's right. You can listen to it uh on your cell phone by downloading the app. Yes, you can listen to it on Alexa, just have to say Alexa, play Clay Radio, or you can listen to it on the cartoons in the in the car.
SPEAKER_02See, that's what I'm talking about. That's what I'm talking about. We're gonna go those ways. We're just a close second behind WKRP in Cincinnati. Just a close, close little shiver.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we don't have frozen turkeys.
SPEAKER_02Oh, but we're putting on it.
SPEAKER_01I do have a loaf of bread.
SPEAKER_02There you go.
SPEAKER_01That's uh stale now as it's been sitting in the studio for two weeks. All right, but Kurt, big news from Kurttown in Palatka. That's right, the mighty town of Palatka. And you're you're there as part of the Arts and Alliance of Putnam.
SPEAKER_02Putnam.
SPEAKER_01Arts Alliance of Putnam.
SPEAKER_02That's what I'm talking about. It's a really it's very cool place.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, and it's previewed uh really nicely. It's Soundstage presents Kurt Town.
SPEAKER_02How cool is that?
SPEAKER_017 p.m. meet and greet, 7.30 show. And that's on August 14th, right?
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_01Very good.
SPEAKER_02I'll be there. It'll be fine.
SPEAKER_00I think the soundstage is also the one in Gainesville, right? I think that's the same company. Well, I don't know about that, but the soundstage in Gainesville is awesome.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think that's just that might be the same company. I don't know. But but I will say it's uh La Mire, right? The premiere at the La Mire.
unknownHa ha!
SPEAKER_02I don't know how you pronounce it, so I'm not gonna say it. It's uh La Mire. That's what I'm saying. Okay anyway, but it's gonna be fun. It's a really nice theater, it's very, very cool, and I love stuff like that. I love theaters, uh, I especially love you know the the older theaters, you know. I think that's just a really cool thing. So I'm very honored to be there, and I'm looking forward to it. And I and I like Palak a lot. I really do. It's a beautiful area right near the water. Uh very it's in the historic park, you know, across from Angels. So Angels is the is the oldest diner in Florida. So Truly and I always go there when we uh if I can talk her into it, because we'll try different things, yeah. But uh I gotta go to the diner and check it out, Angels. So it's it's right across from there. And it's uh it's really a cool building, and I love supporting local art, local theaters, and I'm honored that they would have me. So I'm gonna be playing there, singing and playing guitar, and uh and I'm gonna be telling some tall tales, some tales from the west side. It'll be fun.
SPEAKER_01Yep, tickets are only fifteen to twenty dollars.
SPEAKER_02Yes, so if it's fifteen if you go by yourself, but twenty if you bring a friend.
SPEAKER_01Oh wow, okay.
SPEAKER_02How cool is that? If you bring a friend, if you have friends, you gotta bring 'em. Because it's two for twenty, you know. That's you can't beat that, man. That's cool. That's a real good price.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, all I got's fifteen dollars.
SPEAKER_02Well, you ain't got no friends. Come on, man.
SPEAKER_00Whatever you want to call it. That's the shit.
SPEAKER_02You bring somebody else with you. A random stranger. Don't matter.
SPEAKER_01All right, that's uh August 14th. August 14th. And the doors open at uh 6 30, meet and greets at 7, show starts at 7 30.
SPEAKER_02All right. Meet and meet and greet. Meet and greet. Who's who are we gonna meet?
SPEAKER_01Oh, me? Do we have a sign time that somebody can hold up signs? I'm sure somebody will shuffle. I know where we can get one. Yeah. It's available.
SPEAKER_02That's right.
SPEAKER_01It's available. It's available. Well, good luck with that. That's uh sounds exciting.
SPEAKER_02I expect to see you there.
SPEAKER_01Exciting stuff.
SPEAKER_02It'll be awesome.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I may you may see me before I see you.
unknownYeah, there you go.
SPEAKER_01Hey, let's talk a little bit about part-time jobs, shall we? Yes, shall we? We were talking a little bit off-air, and uh Freddie seems to have had a uh sort of interesting career in part-time jobs. Yes. Tell us a little bit about the movie theater job.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I'm Normandy Mall.
SPEAKER_01Normally, I started Normandy uh is this is this the one where you were the porter?
SPEAKER_00No, no, that's Bulwarse. Yeah, my first job was actually uh where John works at. I worked at Publix, that was my first official job.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow.
SPEAKER_00And uh I had a friend that worked at Walworth and they got me over there. But then when I got in high school, um I wanted to work at theaters, so I love movies, and I was you know, video and all this kind of stuff, and I was like, I'm gonna get the movies, and finally I got in there and uh the movie theaters inside the Normandy Mall was a treat because the mall was on decline and uh a lot of uh a lot of characters in there.
SPEAKER_02Characters, I I frequented that place. Yeah, we case closed proved his point.
SPEAKER_00One day, I remember one day we were out in the in the lobby and the this motorcycle came riding through the mall like a Lando dirt bike. It was not me. It was not you that I can remember.
SPEAKER_02I think we had to do stuff like that. Yeah, what if that was you? It might have been me, actually.
SPEAKER_01It was either you or Fonzi, one or the other.
SPEAKER_02It might have been.
SPEAKER_00But uh yeah. Or may not have been. I'm not sure if all the malls had it.
SPEAKER_02What's what's legal now, is there a stupid thing.
SPEAKER_00Driving a motorcycle through the mall has always been illegal as far as I know.
SPEAKER_02Really? If you have a license?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00I remember the security guard there, he was like he was older and he was not catching anybody. Oh he was just a grumpy old man, he was just mean to everybody. But if he were in a foot race, you were not gonna, he was not gonna catch you at all.
SPEAKER_02You throw a donut down?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I don't know. He wasn't armed with anything either. Hey, uh stop that. Stop. But I think they had Orange Julius in there. Yeah, they did. Oh yeah, that's the green frog. Yeah, the orange, uh, orange Julius logo was always famous. And then they had Aladdin's Castle, you play video games. Yes. And uh there was a I think there was a t-shirt shop. Foot action or foot locker, one of those stores where you had the I care nothing about that.
SPEAKER_02What? I went I went to the I didn't. But I I I went to the t-shirt printing place.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, that's right. That was awesome. They had boicos in there, and then Sam's was connected to the building too. Oh yeah. Uh that's right. So we'd go in there and and JC Pennies. I allegedly went in there and uh allegedly bought candy and then sold it at the movie theater to make money. Cheaper than the movie theater popcorn and candy. Here's your butterfinger. You can buy that butterfinger for four dollars, or you can buy this one for two dollars. Oh my gosh. Yeah, yeah. We were unsupervised for a little while.
SPEAKER_02Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_01Practicing entrepreneurs. Kids don't listen to that.
SPEAKER_02All I know is that they had a a uh clothing shop there that had the Michael Jackson jacket. They had the fake jacket and they had the real jacket. And the real jacket they had locked up with like chains and stuff, and then uh and I was too poor to even afford the fake one. But I wanted that Michael Jackson thriller jacket so bad. Yeah. But I had to settle for like a poster, you know, at the crossway.
SPEAKER_01You should have asked Freddie, he would have cut you in on the deal.
SPEAKER_03Freddie would have cut me a deal, man.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, this one for 50 or this one for 25.
SPEAKER_01So I gotta ask you, what's the most outrageous food thing that somebody brought into the the theater? I mean, I've I've smelled like fried chicken some at some point, but uh you you couldn't tell. But I mean, somebody just like put out a picnic spread.
SPEAKER_00Literally, this lady walked in and and the guy uh that was doing the tickets, you could smell the crystals from the box office. And they had like it was like I think it was like ten dollars for twenty crystals. Right, right. And she literally walked in with this big bag and it was covered up. You know crystals was apparent to see on the outside, but you know, onions. Did she share with you? No, but oh man, the whole thing. That was what caused the problem. The whole theater shared it with you. The whole theater stunk too. Like, what do you mean? I didn't sneak any food in. What are you talking about? Man, you got a 20-pack of crystals in everything. You got a 20-pack sitting on your lap. No one can breathe in here. It smells like just feet and onions.
SPEAKER_02Feet and onions. And I'm sure she got it right there in the corner. Yeah, Lane and Bla in Normandy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And yeah, oh no, this was that the St. John's theater that she did there. Yeah, man.
SPEAKER_02So Well, there was one right by there, too. That was on San Juan. Yeah, that's true. That's true. You gotta know your crystals, dude. Come on. Well, I know the crystals because that one's closed now. They're all closed pretty much. There's one on 17. There is. There's one in uh Stark. There's one in Uli. My wife loves it. Yeah, there is one by there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there's one in uh Palacka.
SPEAKER_02Is it? I mean, is it? Yeah, oh man, we gotta make a crystals room.
SPEAKER_01It's about as uh widespread as the uh payphone is that just.
SPEAKER_02I will tell you this though. One time uh Tom Hoffman and I, we we went down to crystals right here in Paxson, and uh, and you know, it was like ten crystals for ten dollars or something or whatever, or maybe twenty crystals for ten dollars probably. And uh, and and we ate we ate them all, every single one. And I mean they were hallucinating crystal burgers because man, I never had so many bad dreams in my life. I had nightmares, and I was like, oh, bringing out in cold sweats, and it was I'm not for I'm serious, and it was like it was like Freddie Krueger kind of material, man. It was unbelievable. And then, you know, like the only way you can cure that is like you know, you go get more crystals the next day.
SPEAKER_01Pinoff sets the first batch.
SPEAKER_00The San Juan crystals, me and my buddy Matt Parker were in there, I remember this. And uh so we're in there eating, and this bum walks in, and he Oh man, he he comes in, he puts his hand on Matt Parker's crystal burger and his dirty hands. Oh he goes, hey, you gonna eat that? And then Matt goes, he goes, No, are you on his hand on his hand? It was the funniest thing ever. I said, Matt, don't eat that, man. He goes, I'm not. I said, Yeah, you are. He goes, I probably would.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00But that's Sam wanted to remind me of that crystal story.
SPEAKER_02Not on the West Side.
SPEAKER_00Oh man.
SPEAKER_02Come on, man. That was a that was a tell us on the West Side for real.
SPEAKER_00I remember going in there and seeing those signs. It was like five or ten cent a crystal back in the day. What? Yeah, like they had those black and white papers. Oh, the vintage? Yeah, the vintage one, like five or ten cent a crystal.
SPEAKER_02Now it's like two dollars or something. It's crazy. I'm like, you must, you know, truly's always gonna have cheese on it. It's got to have cheese. So, so you know, that's like I have to take out a loan for the cheese crystals. We went like four years ago. You gotta put a payment plan on that thing.
SPEAKER_00Have you ever asked for anything on them? Yeah, of course I do. Well, I didn't know, like, I have my mindset was like it's always gonna come with mayonnaise. I mean uh mustard, right, pickles and onions, right? Right. Well, I never thought to say, hey, I want ketchup on it. Right. So I said Go ahead. I said, Man, I want ketchup on these. And the lady heard me on the on the intercon. I was talking to Jennifer. She goes, Oh, we can put ketchup on it for you, baby. I'm like, I was like mind blown.
SPEAKER_02I was like, You know what's so funny? I was in New York and my brother went with us, Mike, and uh, and and he was like, I gotta have white castles, I gotta have white castles, right? Because it's like Yankee crystals, right? So he came in there, and honest to God, I'm like, I'll take you know four cheese crystals. And the lady was like, What are you talking about? I'm like, I want four cheese crystals. So we had to have an interpreter come in and say he means white castles, but it does not come with mustard. It only comes with ketchup. That's the difference.
SPEAKER_00That's crazy.
SPEAKER_02That's how they get you. I'm like, wait a minute. Y'all shorted me some mustard on my cheese crystals.
SPEAKER_00Is that so you're from up north, though, so they had white castle, no crystals?
SPEAKER_01No crystals.
SPEAKER_00It's just white castle.
SPEAKER_01We didn't see the uh crystals until we arrived here in Florida. And somebody said, Oh, you need to try out the crystals. Yeah, thanks a lot. Good friend you are. Send me the crystals so I can hallucinate as well.
SPEAKER_00I think I saw something where they're gonna put a white castle in St. Augustine.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's coming down this way, and I don't know why. I'm not a big white castle guy either. So you're not a crystal guy or I love them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I love crystal birds. I just know they're like just not really good at the system.
SPEAKER_02Really not good for you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well, I guess everybody probably had a part-time job at some point where on crystal, right?
SPEAKER_02Right. I didn't work in the mall, but I did terrorize a few.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, did you? Yeah. I worked in a in a place that was um it sold like um gift gift ideas, and and they would put uh engraved plaques on them or they can they would stamp your uh initials in the the leather or whatever if you're doing a wallet or a you know something like that. So that that was my my job. So I can't tell you how many of those wallets uh with the uh softer leather that I went through all the way and wasted and yeah, just just like you hold it up and you saw the instead of just being slightly indented, you know, it was right through. You can see the but the thing that uh there was two things that r uh stood out in my mind. One was uh the garbage always used to went down into the truck tunnel underneath the mall. Right, and then you'd have uh all the dump dumpsters and you'd dump the garbage in. Well, I would take the uh and this is something that the guy ahead of me that uh graduated from college and left the the job and then I got stepped up to you know Mr. Garbage Man. But I would go down and throw big um fluorescent tubes. Okay, and you could sail them down the down the w the hall and the the the truck tunnel and they'd go down the truck and then they'd hit the wall and they would just like disintegrate. That's awesome. And then there was nothing left, just dust.
SPEAKER_02Nothing environmentally wrong with that at all.
SPEAKER_01No, not at all. And then the other thing is uh my other big job was uh to go get lunch for the owner. Mr. S, we'll just call him. And Mr. She would have trusted me. Every time.
SPEAKER_02Well then you met you came every setup.
SPEAKER_01Every day that I worked, okay, and he would send me down there. And uh it was the the grossest thing. I I for weeks on end I didn't understand what a what kind of a sandwich I was bringing back, but it was a tongue sandwich.
SPEAKER_02Oh that's terrible. And then one day it wasn't from tasties, was it?
SPEAKER_01No, it was a tongue sandwich on rye with mustard.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01Right? And then he'd get I can't remember what else you get with that. Family friendly. I didn't family friendly. I I didn't realize what it was. I just thought, well, uh tongue is like, you know, the I I didn't know it didn't dawn on me until I saw the guy take the tongue out of the case with all the because it was the deli. I had to run down to the deli, and he and then he s he uh sliced off some pieces and put that in the sandwich. And it was actual cow tongue.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's terrible. I I'm trying to think about it. I was I was scarred.
SPEAKER_01For life. Oh my god. How many requests do you get for that though? It's like I I guess Well you sold at least one sandwich every day of the tongue sandwich. The tongue was it just kind of got smaller and smaller throughout the week. Yeah. Same person. Yeah, gross meow. Uh but for the longest time I didn't understand it was tongue what meant tongue. I just thought it was like short for something or whatever.
SPEAKER_02Would be a perfect time. Oh my gosh, that's terrible. Yes. Oh man.
SPEAKER_01But there are some tongue lovers in the game. Here we go. Any mustard. Tongue with mustard.
SPEAKER_02Oh man.
SPEAKER_01And it wasn't the coupon. There wasn't enough.
SPEAKER_02It was a coupon.
SPEAKER_01There wasn't enough mustard in the world. There was a coupon.
SPEAKER_02There's for sure a coupon on that one.
SPEAKER_01So luckily I didn't, like I said, was weeks. I didn't understand. I would stop at the pizza place. I'd get myself a slice of uh Sicilian, and then I'd get a candy bar. That would be my lunch. Wow. So to this day, I still get a craving for a candy bar after I have a pizza.
SPEAKER_02Man, well, my my part-time is much better than than getting a few. Well, I worked at Lionel Playworld for for a while. And uh I had long hair and I had to wear it in a ponytail. But the the most important thing to know about my job at Lino Playworld was that I was in charge of the action figure owl. The action figure owl, to be specific. Quite an honor. Yes, it was. And so one of the cool things was like when Ninja Turtles came out and all that, even though it wasn't supposed to hide the popular Ninja Turtles, I would hide them for grandmothers and grandfathers coming in for Christmas and stuff. And you know, that was not, you know, you're not supposed to do that. And uh, you know, I'd hit get like a grandma and we're looking for, you know, Angelo or whatever, you know. Michelangelo. And uh anyway, uh, you know, but we've been all over town, you know, and I'm like, hey, listen, I got one right here. He's like, I guess he currently like a trench coat. Hey, I got Donatello over here, right over here, I gotta run over here. And and you, you know, people would, you know, often like, hey man, I'll slide you some money, extra money, if you can get me this, but I wouldn't. I always held out for the grandmas. I did every time, so I'm going to heaven. I'm just saying. But anyway, um, you know, I would be bending down, you know, putting the stuff up, and my buddy Johnny Man's aunt would always sneak up behind me and pull my ponytail and like yank. And I'm like, get up like, you know, West Side, like, we're doing man, like Mr. T, and he'd laugh, ha ha ha! And then I'd see him like in the Orange Park mall at Christmas time, and I'd run up behind him and pull his hair, he's like, ah, West Side. It was funny. We did that for years. What was he doing in the toy store? Well, he had kids.
SPEAKER_00Oh, so he's I'm just saying, uh, was he shopping for toys for himself?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, Christmas time manually, but yeah, he would come in there and he'd always hunt me down the action figure, I don't pull my hair.
SPEAKER_00That line of playwright was epic for us when it was.
SPEAKER_02It was exciting to pull that parking lot. You know what was so cool is one year my my manager, she was like, All right, you're creative, you're you're an artist and all this stuff. And I talked her into letting me uh make a Christmas area. I made first I started with Halloween and I had a witch that was fly across, and this was totally not allowed, you know, and I had this apparatus where this witch would go back and forth across the store and all this stuff, and then I graduated into a Christmas thing. So I went to nice music and got a big old cardboard piano box and built a Santa house and just she let me go at it, man. It was great, it was it was awesome. Patty Ippinshave, she was amazing, she was cool like that. So yeah, it was that was a cool part-time job.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, very much so. With the superheroes and all that stuff.
SPEAKER_02Superheroes, man.
SPEAKER_01That's what I'm talking about. And we also now know uh where the entrepreneurism uh started with both of you guys, so that's a good thing. All right, we gotta take a time out. We're way over the mark here, and uh, the mixed master, if he's gotta put these together, is not gonna, he'll be hunting you down. No question about it.
SPEAKER_02Well, he'll be chilly just getting back from a cruise.
SPEAKER_01Yes, he'll be hunting us down with dreadlocks. We hope so, yeah. Uh all right, so uh back with more coming up after this. Here, it's This Town Rocks on Clay Radio. And we are back, and of course, as always, a great salute to the Queen here of the castle. One Pam Greer, Foxy Brown, looking on from uh one of the uh studio walls here at uh as we continue to roll along with this town rocks here on Clay Radio, Mike Selleck, Freddie Oka, Kurt Town. Hey, hey, the man, the myth, the legend. He'll be a he'll be uh in Putnam County. So those of you in the sheriff's department, if you're looking to uh exercise any warrants, August 14th would be the day.
SPEAKER_00Dude, if I found out you were getting arrested, I'd videotape it so I can just rub it in your face.
SPEAKER_02Look at Kurt getting arrested at the concert he's at. Well, I actually happened to a friend of mine. He told me about that.
SPEAKER_01And and there are people that uh you know are trying to do uh fraud, you know, commit fraud by uh telling you that you there's a warrant out for your arrest and uh it'll cost you X amount of dollars and you can drop it off at a gas station in Duval County. And people fall for it. So I'm not really sure how that all works. But hey, uh this is a uh program that you're able to hear a number of different times during the course of the week. So uh tell some friends uh we're on on Fridays uh between noon and one, and then again uh uh make that nine to ten and then Saturday and Sunday at uh seven o'clock in the evening, and we uh hope that uh you enjoy what we uh bring to you, which is uh sort of free form, if you will.
SPEAKER_02Really free range chickens.
SPEAKER_01I yeah, I I think Freddie, I think it was you. Uh didn't uh somebody say uh they listened uh at your prompting and said, Oh, it's like uh three guys sitting around at a bar just talking.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, it's exactly what it is. It's like sitting in the garage just hanging out. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01Sort of sort of what we do. Yes. So don't blame us.
SPEAKER_02We'll have to bring root beer though. I don't want to bring some root beer.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we're gonna do. Well, uh the 4th of July is um upon us already. It's hard to believe because you know, with uh a stone's throw, the kids go back to school beginning of August and it's uh like the summer's over. Not the heat, but the summer. August 11th. August 11th.
SPEAKER_02Quincentennial quincentennial.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Got uh got the big uh deal going on. And of course uh a couple of private uh well all kinds of private displays of fireworks, right? I mean I I I think since I've lived in Florida, the uh the use of private fireworks has uh exponentially increased dramatically. Absolutely. But we do have uh both Keystone Heights uh with the uh fireworks that are running out uh at the usual place. That's a nice one. Yeah, that's nice. And of course they've got the all-day uh celebration starts like 9 30 in the morning and then goes right through till 9 30 at night when the fireworks are done. And then of course you've got American Pride 4th of July at Moosehaven.
SPEAKER_02Moose Haven. That's where my brother Mike was born.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and uh so that that's uh family joke. Yeah, okay. You threw me off for a second. Yeah, I was puzzled. I was just gonna muscle my way through that because I wasn't gonna ask questions, so that's sure. But um and there may be others, and uh certainly not talking about Duvall County or and uh any others, just uh Clay County at this point. So keep listening, though. What's happening is uh a show that uh Christina Cooper and Tim Mooney host, and they go through all the things that are gonna happen uh at all times, all activities, all events, and so listen to that on uh Monday and Wednesdays. Wow. And then Saturday and Sunday mornings at 8 o'clock. So before you get going in the morning on the weekends, you can listen a little bit, hear what's happening, and go out and do that. So if Kurt Town is playing somewhere on a Saturday, you'll hear about it.
SPEAKER_02That's great stuff.
SPEAKER_01Right, you'll they'll they'll hear about it. All right, so Fourth of July stories. You got any good Fourth of July stories?
SPEAKER_02Well, I would I would just say that one of my favorite Fourth of July's was uh truly and the kids and I went to St. Augustine before it got too crazy, you know, now it is, you know, as far as you know, traffic. But uh we went up there and just took a little blanket and we watched the fireworks and they they had the big speaker system that had classical music playing and the moon was out perfect, it was a beautiful night, and that was awesome. And then another great family experience on Fourth of July was in Monticello, Florida, where I lived for a few years. And um and they had it at a an elementary school, and it was a it was, you know, it was it wasn't a big giant thing. But what r what really got me was they had on a fence they had a Republican um uh you know elephant and then they had the Democrat donkey, and they and the elephant was kicking the donkey or something, and it it was all lit up in fireworks, and I'm like going, oh my gosh, and that was one of the and of course my daughter was like, Look, he's kicking the donkey, and I was like, What oh my god! So anyway it was kind of funny, you know, but it was kind of a but it was just really grassroots, uh, you know, beautiful, you know, small town kind of thing, and they have the watermelon festival before that, which they just had the 75th, and that was a big deal to Mike and I back in the day. Truly and I went last year, it was awesome. So those are two of the really cool 4th of July for me.
SPEAKER_01Excellent. Freddie, how about you?
SPEAKER_00Any stories that you want to relate to? Uh we used to go down uh behind the old uh Wine City Wine C and uh they would shoot all the fireworks on the river St. John's town uh St. John's River off of the provincial building. And or was that I can't remember, it was the Provincial Building or another building. I think it's the Provincial Building, but they shoot the fireworks off of there, and I just remember as a kid everybody's car was on the same station because the local station would play the music to go along with the fireworks. And uh and then for some reason you it was I don't think they can do it this these days anymore, but we would all these all of our kids all these kids would be out there, we'd be throwing the football, and you we'd have a giant football game out there, and all the parents are in their trucks and doing whatever they do, drinking and and shooting off the bottle rockets and stuff. But I remember fireworks going off, playing football, and then the music just queuing up with the fireworks, they did a fantastic job. And uh I just it's one of those things I just don't think they do that anymore with uh the you know everybody meeting in one spot, uh kind of Jacksonville area, all down the river, down Ortega. And all actually the Moose Haven does the fireworks there too, and I've been there a couple times and they do a fantastic job too. But when I was a kid, fireworks were a illegal in Florida. Sure. So the only way to get fireworks, good fireworks, are to go up to South Carolina and bring them back. So if you had a package of bottle rockets, you were like king of the neighborhood, you know. So oh you got bottle rockets? Yeah, it's awesome, and it's like two bucks for a whole thing of it, but now it's like you can get them anywhere and they're twenty dollars for fireworks. But getting fireworks back in the day was a big deal as a kid. Real big deal.
SPEAKER_02Well, we go on the road and uh anytime we went around there, Carolinas or whatever, they'd always made us stop and the guys would buy fireworks, and I'd be like, You're blowing your money up.
SPEAKER_01But I'll watch you do it. Everybody always uh, if they were driving from wherever, coming to Florida and uh on on uh I-95 and would go by uh South of the Border. That's where everybody had south of the border to pick up fireworks. Oh yeah. I mean it was known worldwide. This is where you go, this is where you stop. But uh in Connecticut, it was really st and in fact it's still strict about uh uh fireworks, private fireworks. And uh you know, so uh years ago uh we had an it was at my uh in-laws uh place and it was a big family get together, and uh they had somebody had bought again, they made a trip past south of the border, bought like a gym bag filled with like cherry bombs and and uh bottle rockets and everything was in this bag.
SPEAKER_03Wow.
SPEAKER_01Mistake. Oh no! And they were they were setting them off using cigars because you know you light the cigar and then you can just light it up.
SPEAKER_02You know, supervision.
SPEAKER_01We were the parents. We were the parents. And so somebody was you know reaching in to grab it and drop the cigar in the bag. Excellent.
unknownOh man.
SPEAKER_01In the bag. And they weren't gonna stop and look around in the bag. Everybody's like hot table and yelled and everybody booked, and that thing went off for about 20 minutes. Just boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. It's kind of awesome in it.
SPEAKER_02That is awesome.
SPEAKER_01It was scary as heck.
unknownHeck.
SPEAKER_01Because you had because you had all the neighbors all coming to their houses wondering what the heck just happened, like the neighborhood just blew up or something. You know, oh my god.
SPEAKER_00I remember when we uh because I was saying that that's great. Kurt, you remember this. Like all the fireworks are legal in Florida, but if you had sparklers, you thought you were the you thought you were the man. Oh I got sparklers, look at it. Shh. I'm like, they put those on birthday cakes at restaurants now. I'm like, I thought of, you know, as a kid, you just thought you were top dog in the house. Yeah, where the sprinklers are like sparklers here.
SPEAKER_01Just nobody like, oh yeah, that's nice. But I mean my three-year-old held sparklers. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, but it's amazing how uh how we've come along from you know, it was really tough to get fireworks, and all of a sudden you people are taking out stuff that you should be putting in the back end of a tank or something. You could start it off. Yeah, you could start World War III in the back of your house. Unbelievable. All right, we're gonna take a timeout. We're gonna come back in just a moment. Uh quick finish up here as uh we play radio. Have a good time doing it.
SPEAKER_00Maybe we should play uh Bruce Springsteen, born in the USA.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we could do that. Bruce Springsteen coming up uh during the break. We could certainly do that, not a problem. Stay with us, we're gonna come back in just a minute. This is This Town Rocks here on Clay Radio. I wish we would know the um the artist and also the uh person responsible for writing that little verb that we used as the theme song here on uh Clay Radio.
SPEAKER_00It is uh Red Out Coasters, man. That's a whole lot of woman.
SPEAKER_01Referring to uh Anne Breer and her line in the or actually it was Huggy Bear's line there in uh Foxy Brown. Uh anyway, uh we don't have a lot of time, so uh let's make this short.
SPEAKER_02Uh Kurt Tony got something to say goodbye and wish the fans uh very uh you know fun and safe 4th of July. That's great, you know, Independence Day, Quinston Taylor! You know, I'm I'm a rebellious person in a sense, and so you know, yeah. Go America. Alright, ready?
SPEAKER_00If you're lighting off fireworks, I recommend the long lighters and not the short ones. You light it and run away.
SPEAKER_01This public safety announcement brought to you by Bearded Vinyl.
SPEAKER_02Bearded vinyl! Vital bearded everything backwards. You got my brain like Yoda over there.
SPEAKER_01Yes, you don't. And uh, Mr. Mike Stella, thanks so much for uh tuning in. We appreciate it. Hope uh we uh brightened your day for just a little bit. That's right! And once again, on behalf of all of us here with Distown Rocks and Clay Radio, please go out and enjoy yourself on the 4th of July, but do it in a very safe way.
