Welcome to Becoming Saiyans, a Dragon Ball Rewatch podcast. And we're back. I'm Truman. And I'm Jesse. And this is Becoming Saiyans, a Dragon Ball Rewatch podcast. On today's episodes, we watched episode 73 and 74 titled The Devil Might Beam and the Mysterious Fifth Man. Getting into uh The Devil Might Beam came out in August 5th, 1987. And the American American Air Date was November 20th, 2002. And then it was the um November August 12th, 87, and November 21st, 2002. Jumping into our differences and trivia. The differences in the first episode was the bandages intimidation from Goku was more apparent in the anime. Roshi explaining that Bandages was a true mummy was all added. Goku and Bandages fight last longer in the anime. In the manga, Goku dodges one of the latter's punches and hits him, ending the fight. Here Goku dodges more. So it sounds like in the manga, it was pretty much what you guessed, just Goku just walk out and punches. In this one, Goku has to dodge a few, jump in the bandage, jump down, get out of it, and then finally, you know, do it again. He like knocks him out. Spike telling the masked man that he won't get a chance to fight his filler. Spike spreads his wings briefly before changing charging up the devil might be in the manga, he doesn't do that. The trivia is Krillin claims that Goku's never been defeated before, although although this is untrue on two accounts. He lost a Jackie tongue. Or Jackie Chung, you know, in the beginning.
SPEAKER_00And the second Which he should know. And in the second one, he technically doesn't know because he lost a tail.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it actually says this though. And even though like Krillin doesn't know the second one happened, he definitely witnessed the first one. Um Although the tongues of the two double statues usually meet, there's a gap between them during this episode. Um during the next episode, the gap is gone. Um in the Japanese version, Masteroshi makes a Suki pun. Bandages uh looks for an opening in Goku's defense. Bulma misinterpretes misinterprets this as thinking that Bandages likes Goku, which is an alternate reading of Suke uh Suki, and Krillin clears it up. This is all changed in the dub due to f uh our dub to f Bullma fullishie thinking that Bandages should pull on Goku's tail, which Krullin tells her not to say out loud. All references to hell that Spike makes are not in the English dub, even in the uh uncut version. Jumping into our other episode, The Mysterious Fifth Man, differences from the manga, Roshi's story about the Devil Might Beam and the where Spike killed is all added. In the manga, the Devil Might Beam is only used once um before he doesn't see it works. In the anime he tries a second time, um, only to realize it was pointless. Bulma jokingly asking how Yamcho would fare is filler. Spike asking, what the devil is a uh that that joke is filler. Um Spike only strikes at Goku twice in the manga before he kicks him into the wall. Here, uh Spike manages to put up a better fight and almost make Goku fall in the pot, with his tail saving him, and then it ends, you know. The masked man watching Goku and uh Spike fight is all added. The ghost usher preparing a meal and some of her sampling is that I I could tell that was all added. Yeah. Um trivia, the great uh warrior is not directly referenced in the Japanese version. Uh there, Roshi only talks about the Devil Might being's effect on with the warrior and the flashback just being of an example. Spike's joke in the Japanese version, Akumatha, which can translate to what in the devil, is changed to him joking that Goku's gonna get hurt in a Sing Song voice. The Blue Water dub has him joke about attacking Goku's friends with the Devil Might beam. In the Funimation dub, when Spike knocks Goku off the tongue bridge towards Bob, her scream is provided by Lori Steele, which is Krillin's performer instead of Linda Young. Steele had previously done Baba's voice for her appearance in the Cell Game saga, which we kind of already knew about.
SPEAKER_00So it mentioned it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, and that's all the trivia and all of the differences. So previously, on Dragon Ball. It is Goku's time to fight, and he's taking on Bandages, which is a crazy name. We didn't mention it last episode, but we're gonna branch in it now. Um, crazy name.
SPEAKER_00The name the names for all these characters are pretty funny.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and so then we have uh the bandages uh fight where bandages is kinda I'm just gonna call him Mummy Guy. The mummy guy, he um he is very scared of Goku because Goku is showing perfect defense form, and so he doesn't know what to do. And then they get into a little bit of a fight, but uh he throw Goku's kicking his butt basically. And then um he throws uh bandages onto him, like his wrapping onto him, and tries uh tries to squeeze the life out of him before Goku jumps in, jumps down into the uh pit, basically, and loosens the bandages enough to where you can come out and one punch uh mummy guy. Mummy guy goes down. Next up is Spike, the devil question mark. Devil Man person Um who has a signature move called the Devil Might Beam, which brings out all bad energy. What will Goku do with this? Oh wait, Goku is uh is a chicken nugget who has no bad energy at all. And he uh he immediately shrugs it off and moves on. Um bringing us to our mysterious fifth man, which is somebody who knows who it could be. He's a very um, you know, very distinguished, very different fighter uh to what we've been seeing previously.
SPEAKER_00Very respectful man with the with uh angel halo over top of his head.
SPEAKER_01Who smells nice? Who who could possibly understand anybody?
SPEAKER_00Who calms Goku, and the only two people who he seems recognizable to is Goku and Roshi, who were just beating around we're beating Radibos. I we know.
SPEAKER_01And that's what you missed on Dragon Ball, Jesse. Go for it.
SPEAKER_00Pretty fun episodes. I enjoyed them. Again, we're in a point, we're at a point in time where it's gonna be hard for an episode to suck to me. When it's a lot it's mainly just having like a fighting arc. So obviously, I again I stated last episode, I'll state it again. Love these types of episodes, I live for 'em. Not to solve that. So would you die for them? No. Oh Dang it. I I would not die for something so foolish.
SPEAKER_01I was just giving I was just being crappy to Jesse there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. No, but it's one of those things where just like, does it this doesn't mean that I hate like other episodes, but like you wanna be you wanna like fighting the fighting episodes. Everyone likes the fighting episodes. That's why you watch an anime like this, is to watch the fighting episodes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, if you're watching, what do they call these? The shonen. Like shonen kind of type anime. Yeah, you're going, you're showing up for fights. Like if the fight choreography and the animation on it isn't good, that's what tanks these shows. You know, it's why people are like hating the new season of One Punch Man, is because the animation is just crap from whatever. Yeah. It's like you show up to a fighting show and you're ready to watch people fight, and then the fight sucks, like you're not gonna like the show anymore.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like it depresses me because I love the first two seasons of One Punch Man. I am a sucker for the first two pieces of seasons of One Punch Man. I haven't had a chance to watch the the new season because I don't have any any way to like watch it on my own time. But also I'm a scar I'm scared to watch it because I don't want to ruin my thoughts on One Punch Man. But that's a whole different game.
SPEAKER_01I was just bringing up that as an example of the opposite where it's like if the fights are if you're going to a fight show to watch fights, you hope the fights are good. If the fights aren't good, you're gonna be like, well, trying to find a new show that has fights.
SPEAKER_00It's a reason why people people love like fall in love with MMA if they watch one event versus another event. Because you might watch one event where it goes, you know, full rounds every fight, it's back-to-back, like judges' decision, and then you might watch one event where it's like, okay, every fight lasted 10 seconds because they get like two hit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's like, well, that's those were not good fights. Uh why would I care to watch this? I said sports sucks. I spent $200 to watch this, why would it matter? But I agree on these episodes being pretty good. Like there that there's nothing that's like, oh my god, this is amazing. Like the f there was one cool piece of animation that I wrote a note about, which we'll get to. Um, but otherwise I was just like, yeah, these are good fight episodes.
SPEAKER_00These are well made, what like episodes. Again, we're at a point in the story where like it's getting we're getting introduced to new characters. Yeah. We're getting more of like kind of a world backstory. Yeah. Even if that world backstory technically is like made up for the anime. It's like you're you're still getting it. It's there, it's canon enough to be an anime. Like someone had to approve it, and like I'd imagine they had to like run it by Toriana before they just published the episode. It was like, good luck dealing with that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, I will say something that I noticed. Um it came out, uh or I was looking at pictures, um, I think it was a couple weeks ago now, by the time the the episode goes up. Yeah. Um, but I saw what the next movie is. And spoiler alert for the next movie, you'll never guess who's on the freaking poster for the next movie. Aria and the Gachamons. I was like, oh my god, no. No. I was so upset.
SPEAKER_00We're going back to Pingo Billy.
SPEAKER_01I was so upset. I saw that picture and I was like, no, no, no. We can't do this. You can't make me do this. Oh no. So I'm like weeping in the corner, like when do we get to watch that movie? It'll be after the next arc. So is it because the next one? Another character on the poster was the was the um was a a character that gets introduced in the next arc. So it has to be after that arc. Otherwise, you'd be like, who's this random character? I don't know. It's not the green guy.
SPEAKER_00Um, I mean, I just throw it out.
SPEAKER_01I know you know who they're I know who the green guy. I know I know you know there's a green guy.
SPEAKER_00I know there's like the best father in anime of all time. Joking Piccolo. We know Piccolo. Yeah. Uh but it it again, these these this is a show that lives and dies on these episodes. Like people because there are people out there who probably hate like the overarching story of Dragon Ball. Like it's just everything is not for every person. Yeah. But they still enjoy Dragon Ball and like Dragon Ball scene and stuff because like, oh yeah, I gotta watch people like punch punch other people. Yeah. Really awesomely, yeah. Some of the time. Yeah. Like about 50% of the time, they're punching, and about 50% of the time, I'm scrolling on Twitter until they're punching.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I was um I I my first note here is there goes Bulma blabbing when she brought up the tale. Like getting it getting in some brass tacks on this episode. Um there goes Bull there goes Bulma filling the dead space and she can just shut up.
SPEAKER_00Like, yeah, not trying to be rude.
SPEAKER_01That one that one I was like, if this turns out to be part of the fight, like I knew it wasn't because I didn't remember either of these two people really. Like when I saw the Devil Might Beam, like the name, I was like, oh yeah, I remember that being a thing. But otherwise I was like, yeah, I don't know how Goku wins this, but that can't be that hard because I don't remember these guys all the time.
SPEAKER_00Also, if we had a nickel for every time Goku got wrapped up into something, we would have what like three nickels now?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's and everyone was like, oh, Goku can't win, and then he just wins. Yeah, then he just breaks out somehow. Um they're different ways, but yeah.
SPEAKER_00There's different inventive ways every time. Well, the first one he just like breaks out of it. Yeah. But like every other time after that, it's been like kind of inventive how he gets out of the stuff.
SPEAKER_01But uh what I was going to was that like Bulma, like Bulma blabbed me. I was like, I swear, if this is how like this fight gets prolonged because he grabs his tail for a little bit or something, like I was gonna be very upset.
SPEAKER_00But you know what? They it basically acted like he didn't hear.
SPEAKER_01Well, because it was only in the English dubs. So apparently it was another joke in the other dubs, and so that's why that they were like, What? I didn't hear that.
SPEAKER_00You know, I guess like knowing that makes sense why that just was never seen or referenced again the rest of these episodes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because why why would they bring it up? It doesn't matter. Um, I like Opa being like really sweet in these moments, you know, like being like, I'm I'm really scared. Like, be safe, Goku.
SPEAKER_00Like, yeah, the thing the thing with Opa in this moment is like he as we got referenced in in the last couple episodes we watched, um, it's like he truly believes everything is happening because of him. And I'm like, on the one hand, like majority technically, yes, but you're not like Goku's not gonna give up even if you kind of weren't here, but he's especially not giving up because of you. Like there are parts where you can be like, eh, it's kind of on you, but like you can't blame yourself. It's like uh kind of a reference to what's happened to me uh this week. I had to get my car fixed because I've got dumb reasons. Because I I stopped at a gas station here in town, and we had just had like heavy rain the night before, and they just so happened to have a good s like not have had a good seal that night, and so I got a lot of water in my in my car, and lo and behold, you know, kind of screwed up my engine for a little bit. And I was sitting here being like, man, I really shouldn't have stopped to get that gas. Like I didn't need the gas, I wasn't in like an emergency. It was kind of a last second decision when I pulled in to get the gas, anyways, and I was kind of beating myself up about it, but like at the same time, like I can't beat myself up because who goes into a gas station with the innate fear that oh no, I'm gonna like screw up my engine because there's water in the gas. You don't think that you don't want you don't want to think that. If you if you think that all the time, you just don't own a car now because you're too scared. Yeah. But but it's it's that it's kind of that mentality for Oof, where it's like, it's not your fault this is happening. You can't blame yourself that these people just have too much pride with you or without you involved to give up.
SPEAKER_01And the in the long range of it, it's not your fault your dad died. Yeah. Because it almost feels like if like this gate if like we can read that in this. If this show was just a little bit like a little bit newer, that would be part of it of like the long part of the guilt. It's not part of the guilt in in him right now. He's it's not, it's at least not stated, but it is one of it's like you can infer that that's part of the guilt, but they don't expressly state it. It would have been expressly stated if this was coming out in 2019. Like, because there we'd have more understanding of how these things connect.
SPEAKER_00We'd have more understanding how these things connect, but also I I you know not trying to dog on modern day writers, but you would have they kind of like people write in shows in the modern day with the understanding that people's media literacy is way dumber than in the 80s. I hate to like insult people on a ride spectrum like that, but yeah, but by and large. But by by and large, sh the reason the reasons why you complain about video games or like any media being written like you know it's it's you're a first grader is because a lot of people's media literacy is kind of on a first or second grader level. Like the average human who is going to experience a thing has to kind of have it slapped in their face sometimes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And uh but like we can infer it, because you know, we're smart guys, I'm just kidding. Yeah, but like we're mature for our age. But you can like connect the dots there where like he's he's not saying that that's part of it, but he he's saying it's his fault that they had to go get the dragon balls. Yeah. Um, but what like what it feels like is going on is like he's he's blaming himself. Like, if I had been stronger, my dad wouldn't have gotten it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, maybe I could help dad.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and if my like because my dad took on that fight with kind of protect to protect to protect me and the sacred land. It's my job to protect the sacred land too. Like, if I were just a little bit stronger, maybe I could have helped protect the sacred land. Um, but I mean they don't really get there. I mean, there's not enough, first of all, there's not enough time in this episode.
SPEAKER_00There's not enough time in the time that we have known Upa to get there.
SPEAKER_01But that is it is a he's also a kid in the 80s that's growing up in the middle of nowhere. There's no way he's connecting those dots, but that's definitely worth part of the intelligence to say.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. So, but that that's there. Like he and he's beating himself up about it constantly, which is why he's so worried. Like, you know, it's part of why he was yelling at Yamsha. It's odd. It's part of why, like, yeah, he tried to save Yamsha is a big reason why he's like there, he's part of the constant yelling at Goku to give up.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Even knowing with the knowledge, like, if there's anyone more stubborn than Yamsha in this moment, it's Goku when someone's threatening to hurt his friends. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like And then uh the he that fight starts out with Goku. I first of all I said that was a cool kick. Was that that's the animation? There's a there's a scene or there's a there's a part of the beginning of that fight where um the the mummy guy bandages is jumping through the air and he does like a twist to like land like he's like jumping up and then he like twit he twists around to where he can kick down. Because he's he's like he's send he's standing vertical, and then he turns like horizontally, but also like does a twist to like a 180 where he can just drop kick Goku straight into the ground. He kind of like acts him a little bit. Yeah, and that that uh that animation on that, I was like, this is cool, and I want to point it out because we don't normally point out specific parts of animation when we're watching this.
SPEAKER_00There was, I mean, there's a lot of good animation. I think there was like a part in the middle of the fight where like Goku was kind of dodging a little bit, like I think it was right before he got wrapped.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00He was like dodging around. Um, where like it's kind of like it's doing like a camera turn, but it's doing it in a way that like an 80s animation would have to do it. Where it's like it's constantly turning just enough where now Goku is technically off-screen, so they don't have to animate him. So they're only animating uh ba bandages. And then like bandages is now off-screen if the camera continues turning this way, and now Goku is now the only one being animated. And it's like doing that turn, I'm like, for for fourth time, that is fantastic animation. Yeah, it's it's it's type of animation that makes you be like, man, it kind of sucks that like we get a lot more kind of 3D style instead of just like a pureblood, like 2D animation style like this. Because it was a more 3D E style, kind of like three, like like two and a half D style.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You would probably have them both being animated at the same time, and you it would be more obvious the type of techniques that are. And it would probably suffer for it because you have to animate them both at the same time, which puts on the constraints of how much more detail you can put into each character. Yeah. That's such it was the entire the animation in the bandages fight, fantastic. And not saying the devil the devil man fight it like sucks.
SPEAKER_01But I also I want to point out they also part of the reason why it's so good is because they they also are cutting corners. Because when Goku gets grabbed, they use the same face of him like grunting uh probably 50 times. They are they they are milking the him, they're like, okay, so we had all this awesome movement, awesome animation. Now we're stuck. We've got Goku stuck, he's not moving. It's almost like uh there's this little like mini show on Disney Channel, because I watch Disney Channel with my girls, you know, um, where there's a thing called like how not to draw, and it's like a mini-series like in the commercials where it's like how to it's basically like how to draw characters, but it's like classic characters, like they got Bill from uh Gravity Falls as one of them, they got Mickey Mouse from the the like uh the anime the newest-ish animated Mickey Mouse stuff, um, all sorts of stuff like that. Tangle the animated Tangle um show, that kind of thing. And they bring these characters in and then they do wacky antics. And it almost feels like the artist is fighting Goku, because in that show the artist is like fighting these characters, being like, stay in the one spot. I'm trying to show these people how to draw you. Why do you keep moving around? You know, how d why did I summon Bill to like ruin the universe? Um that kind of thing, you know? Yeah, and that's what it kind of feels like. It's like the the the artists and the the animators are like, stop moving, Goku. You're making this fight too cool, you're wasting too much money. Wrap him up. Come on, bandages, stop him from moving, is what it feels like. Yeah. And it that I I'm not complaining, I'm just pointing it out because it's noticeable that like they had a lot of really cool fighting, and then that they just stop for like five minutes as Goku's just wrapped up. Like, and but that's a way like they can save that money.
SPEAKER_00And then like with the knowledge that this was a one-punch fight, it makes sense why I think the rapping scene before Goku wins probably goes uh to me goes maybe a minute and a half too long. Yeah. Where they're all screaming, and then Goku's not doing anything, and they're all screaming, and Goku's now sweating, and they're all screaming, and it just keeps flashing back and forth. I'm like, this could've been a little shorter.
SPEAKER_01But the reason the another reason it's not is because we have we're we're saving next episode from basically all going to be, for the most part, uh focusing on the fifth fighter. Yeah. Like we had a little bit ending of the uh spike or devil man, but like for the most part it was just setting up the fifth fighter.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so with that, you're putting in both of these two fights between between Spike and Um Mummy Guy, neither one of them are like particularly difficult fights for Goku and the manga, from what they were saying. He basically just like knocks them both out pretty quickly.
SPEAKER_00Well, well, the manga just one punches badge, which is what I was predicting to happen, getting a little early into our prediction.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, um, and then against against Spike, like they say that he tries the Devil Might Beam once, it doesn't work, then he pulls out the trident, and then the fight's over. You know? Yeah. Like he Goku has to dodge a couple of times and then kicks him through the ceiling. Like, if you were to do that, that's like not even half of one episode. Like if so they they I I'm giving them grace because it's justifiable.
SPEAKER_00And it's also like they're kind of uh doing doing The extra animation allows them to flex their animation skills, which we have complicated so far in this episode.
SPEAKER_01And then they they also, because of that, I'm not going to dock them for stretching a little bit. I'm just pointing it out so that people, like in case they were like, they always point out the filler, and then they didn't point it out in this one. It's like, no, we're pointing it out. It's a thing. We don't hate it in this one because I think it's deserved, because they obviously spent a lot of money on these fights in the spots where they animated and they went hard, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I'm not necessarily saying that I hated the bandit, like him rapping, getting rapped by a bandit and stuff. I am just pointing out for me personally.
SPEAKER_01I don't hate it. I'm I'm saying I give him a pass because normally something like that would be my worst part. It's not gonna be my worst part in this one.
SPEAKER_00Because it does allow them next episode to leave on the cliffhanger of who is the mysterious fifth fighter.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because if they didn't do that, we would have put the the f all the like the second part of last of the second episode into the the second half of the first episode and we'd learn out who the fighter was on the next episode. Yeah. Like it would be it would feel it would feel rushed. Where it's like go or like it would also make sense pacing-wise that like it took Yamcha a whole episode basically to lose to bandages. Like if Goku shows up and just beats him that easily, it doesn't make it look like Goku, like we obviously know Goku's above all of our all of our maintenance.
SPEAKER_00It makes it feel like like he didn't earn it in a way.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it also makes it feel like Yamcha's a bum.
SPEAKER_00It's like we gotta wait till Z to show Yamcha being a bum. Yeah, but like Yamcha can't be a bum yet. You got 200, you got like a hundred more episodes before you can be a bum.
SPEAKER_01But it the thing is is like Krillin got beat pretty fast. Yamcha, by the time when he did get beat, got beat really fast, you know. Like, we can obviously tell that Goku, like, Roshi even knows that like Goku's stronger than him at this point.
SPEAKER_00But even like even like this, like the bandage fight, and especially the double man fight, really gets Roshi to be like, oh, I don't think there's much I can teach this boy. Yeah. Um but like maybe like a little self-control or something. I got a whole lot.
SPEAKER_01Koran did most of the training. Yeah, Korrin finished this for me. I I gave him molded clay and and he made a painting or made an art, a statue out of it. Um but yeah, I think part of it just meta reading is that like, yes, we know Goku's much stronger than most of our people, but if he is leaps and bounds stronger already, there's like no chance that they're going to catch up to, like they're ever gonna catch up to him. And so they've gotta they've gotta make make it a little bit tougher for Goku. Otherwise it it is just like, oh yeah, and Goku just automatically is stronger than everybody. And it's like, well then like what's the point in the next tournament saga? Because there's gonna be one coming up eventually. Like, there's no way they don't do that again. That like what what's the point in Krillin and them showing up when they like know they're gonna get beat? It's like we gotta at least show Goku have to struggle a bit before he one punches.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, it's it's again, like, there's there's reasons, and you bring up the pacing, it's like, yeah, we'd screw up the pacing. Like, you know, I got I brought up the pacing a little bit and you bring you confirmed you you kept going with it. Where it's like there are reasons why they add some of the filler, and that's why that's why like we haven't pointed it out as like, oh, this is all bad filler. It's like, no, there's there's a method to the madness sometimes. It's the unnecessarily bad filler that like that is like that hits you over the head with it where it's like this didn't even this couldn't even this didn't even need to be email. This needed this didn't need to be anything. Like this is a this is a thought you keep in your head in the office.
SPEAKER_01Like you know, like it would be different if they the bandages fight took the entire episode because he wrapped them up for 12 minutes. Yeah. It's like then uh we'd be on here a whole different thing being like, I can't believe we wasted two episodes with these guys, you know? But the fact that it was an extra like maybe three to five minutes, but not as not as bad.
SPEAKER_00And I think part I think part of it's also be salty because my predictions wrong. Yeah. There's a there's a there's a sub subconscious part of like, man, you mean to tell me if we were just reading the monk and my prediction was right? It was like one panel and he's gone.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But I do like pointing out some other stuff on here is like the mummy is witty. He points out a lot, he does like, you know, I've got you all wrapped. We guess we should wrap this fight up. He makes a couple, he makes like three mummy, mummy puns in a row. Yeah. Um, but he's a and he's able to, you know, outsmart or Goku's able to outsmart him. Like that we had to show that Goku's like is not just brute force stronger than everybody, he also has some he's gained some smarts from Corrin. Like from his from his interaction with Corrin and predicting five.
SPEAKER_00I do have to compliment the way he the way he actually got out of the bandages, yeah, as you said. Yeah. It's like, it's like, it's awesome to see Goku's like fighting instinct intelligence come into play all that time. Yeah. He jumps off and everyone's like, oh no. He's just like gonna he's just jumped off to his doom. And then it's like, hold up, let him cook. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like it's like he knows what he's doing.
SPEAKER_00It's like the like the acid was able to like semi-he unraveled enough for the acid to weaken it further for him to just swing around, bust out of it, and swing back up and stuff. Yeah. Like, amazing, amazing fighting aptitude.
SPEAKER_01One thing I wanted to point out too is that like the first two fights were kind of gimmick fights. Like, there were fighters who were fighting purely on their gimmick. Like the vampire dude was fighting purely as a yeah, if when his blood sucking didn't work, he was out. When invisible man was no longer invisible, he was no threat. And that I like the fact that from a show standpoint, they they saved Goku and didn't have him fight those gimmick fights. Because those gimmicks, it's like, you know, go Goku's above that.
SPEAKER_00They had to out-gimmick the gimmick. Yeah. Which is a fun way to do like early fights in a saga like in a moment like this. I shouldn't say saga, but like in a moment like this. Yeah. Whereas now we're into like the people who like, yeah, they have gimmicks. You know, you have the devil might raise, you have the rapping with bandages. Uh I don't know what we're gonna have for the fifth fighter. Just I mean, he has a mask and talks weird. Or like talks like talks like a grandpa. Um like we don't we don't we haven't seen his gimmick yet because we haven't seen him enough. We saw him for like 30 seconds in a fight.
SPEAKER_01But like the gimmick, like they're outside of the gimmicks, they're also pretty. Like they seem like they'd be for mid-up. Like the Yamcha got beat without gimmicks.
SPEAKER_00Like the bandages didn't just Yamcha just got beat one on 1v1. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yam like Yamcha, like, the bandages didn't even use his bandage gimmick. Yeah. Like, because he didn't have to. Um and then like, you know, the the Spike didn't like after the devil my bean didn't work, he still gave Goku a bit of a pulled out the the the devil fork or the Yeah, the the spot the trident or rag or whatever you want to call it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And gave him gave him uh gave him a good fight. Like, it's nice to see that difference. Like, we we see that level get elevated. I mean last the last episodes we saw a level get elevated when like Yomsa just didn't even get a hit in, basically. He got one like okay-ish kick in, and then the fight was over for that one. Yeah. And that was the one could okayish kick he got in was with like two seconds left of the fight, pretty much.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um one thing I wanted to point out is like he immediately knocks like he almost knocks um a spike into the ground into the like poison or whatever. Into like an acid. And spike makes like a poop face when he's flying away. Like, I almost had to pause to laugh because it was that ridiculous.
SPEAKER_00I also made a joke when he like came out with the wings.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, I fly now. Yeah. And then like they say the same thing too, like, hey, he's flying, that's against the rules. And she's like, I don't care about the rules. Screw your rules. Sorry if you guys hear the train, there's a train passing by right now. Yeah. Um we live close enough too. I live like two blocks from the train track, so um that that happens sometimes. But I wanted to point out on the Devil Might beam, it almost looks like Ghost Rider's Pennax. Like, it almost works like his pinnacle.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I was like kind of brought that up too, it's like when it happened, like so it's just like negative thoughts version of Ghost Rider's like ultimate ability.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, where he's like, I bring out all the guilt you have. The guilt and bad and like sin you've done. Yeah, and then it's like, you know, this guy's like, I bring out all your bad vibes, bro.
SPEAKER_00But instead of being like immolated in hell, you just your heart explodes because it can't take the negative energy.
SPEAKER_01Your heart gets so big that it grew ten sizes that day.
SPEAKER_00But actually it killed you instead of just making you rip much nicer than the because you're the Grinch or whatever. But yeah, and I it I I I I knew it immediately when like he's like, that's just how the devil might be works. I'm like, so Goku's just immediately.
SPEAKER_01So Goku's a pure chicken nugget and isn't gonna be bothered at all.
SPEAKER_00Got it.
SPEAKER_01Because because about the second time.
SPEAKER_00Because like I think it it's the uh it works the opposite way that the uh the Nimbus cloud. The Nimbus Cloud works, whereas like you have if you have any negativity, you can't ride the Nimbus Cloud. So it's like if we if Goku be able to ride the Nimbus Cloud, it means he can't be killed by this meme.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It's like sorry bro, I got my Nimbus Cloud, and he's like, oh well this isn't gonna work. Um but he tries to work the second truck.
SPEAKER_00Maybe it'll work if I put enough like fanfare, make some explosions and lightning and stuff. Yeah. And I was like, oh, that didn't work. Oh well, I guess I'll just gotta like try to beat you up. Because technically, he can't use double might ray in the martial arts tournament because it kills people. Yeah. So like he actually like knowing that he beat the martial arts tournaments twice, yeah, means he can also fight. He actually like is a pretty good fighter. Yeah. He has to have some skill to win the world martial arts tournament twice.
SPEAKER_01And then talking about good animation again, during their fight when it like they do the fade to black, like, or fade to white, like the floor. Yeah, like the white, the white explosion. It looked like manga art. Like it looked like pencil, like pencil manga art, like of like the draw like pencil drawings, you know, like the very beginning forms. And even like Roshi's character design looked a little different in it, because like I think it was just like ripped from the manga and put on the screen type of thing.
SPEAKER_00Like it it was a really cool like animation effect. Yeah. And you have to like I love it, I love those types of animation effects where it's like it's like that, like it kind of reminds me of when they like drop a nuke. Yeah, like like in a in a show. Yeah. I like that's why I wrote it down like hit so hard, like it turned white. Yeah. Yeah, hit so hard, it turned it went white, and then he flashes back and he's in the ceiling, wads in the ceiling. Like, oh.
SPEAKER_01That kind of sucks for that dude. The rest of my notes are, hmm, I wonder who this mask character is. Jesse, who do you think the fifth fighter is?
SPEAKER_00And then Goku makes a makes a comment. Like, he smells nice. He like calms me down. Yeah, he smells really calming. And I'm like, huh. And then Roshi starts questions, like, man, I really know this guy. This guy is really weird. Yeah, he seems familiar. He's been wearing a mask this entire time. And he's got like an angel halo. And uh I we've I figured it out. Like we confirmed off screen. I was like I was gonna wait for the podcast. And then we confirmed off screen. It's it's go on, we're gonna meet Grandpa Kohan for the next next episode.
SPEAKER_01And I I do want to say, like, I tried to keep it, but I I just couldn't help myself to figure out if he had figured it out or not. And it seemed like a dumb, like a dumb thing. If he didn't figure it out, I was gonna give him crap.
SPEAKER_00But like Well, it says the person who didn't connect the dots immediately when you lost it.
SPEAKER_01Well, I didn't connect the dots until like the the fight, and I saw that the catch of the fist. Because that that is like I pointed this out when we were watching it, because it was like that's the paper, rock, scissors effect where he uses paper to beat rock. Yeah, he catches the fist. It's like he's using the rock, paper, scissors technique. Yep. Of course it's him. Um But yeah, that's basically all I had as my joke. Oh, I have one more note. It was about them giving the ghost more lines with the filler for that, and it's like I just feel like they like the person who did the voice for the ghost, so they're like, we gotta give him more to beat the.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I feel like they like the ghost as like a side character. And the ghost is a really fun side character. I I will say for like reference, I did guess it was Gohan before the snack time. Uh because like I wrote it's Gohan in like exclamation point, maybe, I don't know. And then I wrote Snack Time, exclamation point. Yeah. So like I was like, I I I figured it out pretty quickly. I was like one once Skokie was like, he smells nice, and then something like Roshi said something's familiar. Like there's only one character that both these characters know and would be familiar that nobody else would have ever met who would also theoretically have to have an angel halo because he's dead. Yeah, or he at least died the last last thing we knew anything about him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, for sure. Yeah, and I I mean I I he wanted to say it for prediction, but I I kind of confirmed it when he pointed it out when he said it. I was like, yeah, it's pretty that one's painfully obvious.
SPEAKER_00Uh pretty obvious. It's one of those that like if you're seven and you're watching the show, maybe you don't put it together until like the start of next episode or whatever. Yeah. But like, but also if you're watching this as it's coming out weekly, you probably figure it out. Like, if this came out on a Friday, you probably figure it out by Wednesday of next week, and then you're really excited for the episode Friday.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And it seems like it's like yeah, especially if you're like hanging out at school or whatever, and you're talking about it.
SPEAKER_00Everyone's like talking, like, man, who could that be? And then like there's that like the one smart kid with the glasses.
SPEAKER_01Uh it's it's I've read the manga, it's his it's his grandpa. Grandpa. And they're like And then you all beat him up in the corner because he's a nerd. Yeah. Nerd you read manga. It's just I know that's like it's probably might not have been like that over there in Japan, but that's how it was if you read comics over here where you were watching Bat you went to go watch Batman and like you didn't know anything, and there'd be the nerd that's like, mm, actually they messed this, this, and this up because I'm gonna let you into the secret that I know about like Japanese guild you.
SPEAKER_00It kinda is like that.
SPEAKER_01I was just I wasn't sure. I was just throwing that.
SPEAKER_00At least from my understanding. I'm not gonna accuse anybody of being like that, but from my understanding, from like listening to people talk about anime and manga culture in Japan, it's kind of like Saturday morning cartoons for kids in elementary school over here. Okay. Like it's kind of that effect, so you it's kind of like that. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Alright. Well, I don't really have any other notes for this episode. I mean, I mean it kind of cuts. They were really good at like, yeah, pretty much fades into like who's this fighter? Let's find out in the next episode of Dragon Ball.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, with this perilous fight with between Goku and this mysterious man, who definitely don't want to figure it out by now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, so Jesse, we're jumping into our predictions, or by our predictions, I mean your predictions.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't think I did necessarily fantastic. Goku.
SPEAKER_01Goku beats the mummy really fast in one version of the show.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, in the manga version of this of the story.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, which doesn't count because that's what we're talking about. Uh 73 and part of 74 are fighting the fourth guy. I mean, he does fight him in both parts because I had notes from both of them.
SPEAKER_00I mean, technically, yeah. I'll give you that one. He finishes the fight in the beginning, kinda like right after, I think, the mid-roll in the second episode.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's a little after that, because he that's when Goku finishes the finishes off bandages is in the mid-roll. And then he like he fights or he the fight starts with the him charging up his first devil might be. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like well, like yeah, he beats he beats bandages in episode 73, like right after the mid-roll. Yeah. And then in seven, and then like from that point on, we go until like a little before slash after the mid like somewhere around the mid-roll in the next episode of him fighting devil man. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um. And then your last one was that the fourth fighter was gonna be wolf or creature from Black Lagoon, fifth one is Wolfman. I think we can pretty much decide that neither one of those is true at this point. Yeah, you know what? They really they really baked you into making that assumption.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean it is true as well. If you know anything about like universal monsters, uh, which I mean probably most kids in Japan probably wouldn't. Yeah. They'd be like, oh, cool design. Oh, cool design. Especially in the 80s. I don't necessarily know how many how many people were renting out the Japanese dub of Frankenstein or Dracula, like 1930s movie, like black and white American film spectacular.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And like, and it was, you know, it if with what you had known going into it, it made sense for you to guess the next two because you already had three of them. And you already in the first episode.
SPEAKER_00You have more than half of the characters being Universal Monsters.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, but moving forward into the next two episodes, the names of the episodes are The Strong Ones and The True Colors of the Masked Man. So what do you think is going to happen?
SPEAKER_00Sounds like we got a like multi-episode fight about to happen on our hands. I I think this fight's gonna go on. I think it's gonna be kind of similar to the Chun Goku fight in the Terminar, but it's actually gonna like go to like a majority of like, you know, an episode and a half, two episodes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It sounds like possible.
SPEAKER_01It definitely sounds like it could, for sure.
SPEAKER_00Because we just got like the first three punches and then it cut away, and it's probably gonna start with those first three punches again.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So I'm gonna guess that's gonna be like a nice long extended fight throughout the next two episodes.
SPEAKER_01That could be really fun, for sure. Um, so you think multi-episode fight? What do you think? Is there any other guesses you have or any predictions you have for the the next little bit?
SPEAKER_00I mean, I already know it's Gohan, so they can't really use that as a prediction, like a guarantee win.
SPEAKER_01I won I think the masked man might be Grandpa Gohan. Watch it not be. That'd be that'd be crazy. That would be insane. We've all been gaslighting you. You thought it was. Even the internet's been gaslighting me because I like Googled.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Because we were talking about if he has like a pop figure. Yeah. And uh technically he does not. He has a couple other like figures from different things, but not a pop figure. Yeah. At least from what we could find. Maybe, hey, if you know what he does, send us a link. Yeah. That'd be something good.
SPEAKER_01Um, but yeah, so you just want to guess it's a multi-episode fight? Do you want to have anything else?
SPEAKER_00Uh I'm gonna guess that Goku I'm gonna say Goku wins. I'm gonna say Goku beats him.
SPEAKER_01Goku beats him.
SPEAKER_00Uh well, he doesn't beat him to death. Well, yeah, obviously.
SPEAKER_01We don't think he can't. If he's dead. He's we already had that set up with the with bandages. If they're dead, they can't be killed again. You know? You can just be banished or whatever. Um, you gotta third one? You wanna throw a third prediction out there? Um like maybe about where the dragon ball is, because if Goku wins, then that means they're gonna get told what they're where the dragon ball is. What do you think it is?
SPEAKER_00I'm not gonna go with the dragon ball. I'm gonna go uh Roshi like has an epiphany, like mid-fight, but doesn't want to like reveal it to Goku.
SPEAKER_01Roshi figures it out before Goku.
SPEAKER_00Before Goku he does. And obviously no one else knows who Gokan is, because so it's obviously before everybody else figures it out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like obviously like Bulma knows about him, but doesn't know who he is or what he looks like or anything. Alright, so those are your predictions going back through a multi-episode fight, Goku wins or beats him. Um then Roshi figures it out before Goku, like who he is. Um, so I guess going into worst part, what was your worst part, Jesse?
SPEAKER_00There's not really a lot to say was like bad in these episodes.
SPEAKER_01The only thing I can think of is the the sna the midday snack time. That would be the one where it's like the other the other ones I was like, yeah, this makes sense. You gotta extend these fights a little bit longer because it sounds like Goku just whooped them easy. Like, yeah, I understand you gotta add a couple of fights. But that one was like a now you're just padding for time so we don't start this fight too soon, it feels like, you know. So I'm gonna give that one my worst part. I do like the ghost voice. It's but again, I don't know. This is me picking character. This is me picking like a bad thing, not the worst thing. This is nitpicking. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And so I'm like, there's not a whole lot that I can like nitpick a like I guess for me, just for my taste, even though I understand the context behind why it is, I guess I'll I'll go with the thing I complained about, which is like I feel like the him being wrapped in the band is just could have been a little shorter. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'm not saying cut out a minute, I'm saying kind of like maybe 30 seconds.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like like just for for my own taste.
SPEAKER_01Rule of three on it, you know. Like you you went a little too long with it. You did it a little too many times.
SPEAKER_00We know how these things go. We just had to figure out how he was gonna solve it. Yeah. We seen it two other times. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, so Jesse, best part.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna give it just I'm gonna give it to that animation moment I pointed out in the uh bandages fight.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm picking the kick. That's my favorite part, was that kick.
SPEAKER_00Which is fun that we're actually we're kicking an animation moment in the fight, yeah, but a different animation moment, which is nice.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Because I I that kick, like the the way he moved and grintored his body actually felt like a fighter from like an actual fight from a fighter. Like it felt like a martial arts.
SPEAKER_00Like it felt like a feasible feat of like it like strength and agility.
SPEAKER_01Like it's above normal humans, but not so much that it's unbelievable.
SPEAKER_00That's unless it's like this dude's flying in mid-air.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, not not so much that he's Kamehameha Ion or anything. It was like he jumped and did like a like almost like a backhand spring of sorts or like a front. handspring of sorts to land and hit them good. So that's gonna be my part.
