Nicole Cash is a highly skilled performer whose training in classical music allows her to captivate audiences and connect people through the power of sound. She served as 3rd Horn with the Dallas Symphony, and Associate Principal Horn of the renowned San Francisco Symphony, until she was diagnosed with focal dystonia, a career-ending repetitive movement disorder.
The meandering road of recovery and rediscovery led Nicole to the art of audiobook narration, to which she brings the same keen sense of rhythm, intonation, lyricism, and drama.
Nicole delights in voicing the blood-curdling suspense of a dark thriller, the complex characters of literary and historical fiction, and the heart-warming nostalgia of a coming of age story. Her experiences as an African-American woman compel her to share the tangled theories and truths of social science and political justice tomes.
As the mother of two young children, Nicole feels right at home bringing to life all sorts of fantastical characters and creatures, and finds great joy in being silly. Most often described as “warm, clear, engaging, and easy to listen to,” her voice is a hug that envelops the listener in whatever story she is sharing.
When away from her home studio on the North Shore of Long Island, NY, Nicole can be found creating custom cakes for friends and family, attempting to grow organic vegetables and herbs in her garden, skiing, singing karaoke, and of course…reading.

And why we ALL need more visibility!
People have been asking: is the Happiest Musician Visibility Lab for me if I don't HAVE an audience yet? If I don't KNOW HOW?
Visibility is SCARY for all of us but it is the best way I know to build your own career. Let's talk about it!

The story of my reed business is a BORING one, in which for a long time nothing happens. And then suddenly it became a 6 figure revenue stream in which I am able to employ other musicians!
What made the magic? Was it just waiting for 20 years of momentum to finally work?
Nope. it was visibility.

I've been talking a lot about Visibility lately, and you might be thinking that it's not for you because you "hate social media" or because you "don't want to be an influencer".
What am I actually talking about?

What do I mean by this cryptic statement? I think it means two things, one of which might feel a little bit discouraging, the other of which opens the DOOR to possibility!

Katherine Needleman is a musician from Baltimore, Maryland, USA. She was introduced to music in the formerly robust music education programs of the public school system, having played violin, clarinet, oboe, keyboards, and percussion there. She was accepted to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia at age 16 and dropped out of high school to attend. Later, she was expelled for academic incompetence by the Juilliard School in New York a month after winning their oboe concerto competition.
She has played the oboe professionally for a long time now and has observed her own feelings about being one of the few women included change over time. She is very interested in the potential of music and tries to write some herself. She is interested in the relationship between composers, performers, and the stage.
Recent musical highlights for Needleman include accompanying her cellist daughter in the Haydn C Major Concerto at a middle school assembly, a recital where most everything felt right and good at a retirement home outside of Philadelphia, and an 8am performance of her “Stolen Prophet” for oboe and piano and her “Spike Protein” for twelve oboes in Kansas. She enjoys arranging music she loves by dead white men and people who aren’t dead white men to make it possible to play great music not written for the oboe on the oboe.
She maintains a blog and Facebook page of some notoriety about her observations of and experiences in the world and the classical music industry. She has been hailed by the New York Times as a “small, intense woman.”
You likely know her from her work exposing the patriarchy that has long gone unnoticed in classical music, and from her substack newsletter at https://substack.com/@katherineneedlemanoboist.

GatherNYC, a revolutionary concert experience founded in 2018 by cellist Laura Metcalf and guitarist Rupert Boyd, presents concerts every other Sunday at its home venue, Museum of Arts and Design, in New York City's Columbus Circle. Guests at GatherNYC are served exquisite live classical music performed by New York’s immensely talented artists, artisanal coffee and pastries, a taste of the spoken word, and a brief celebration of silence. The entire experience lasts one hour and evokes the community and spiritual nourishment of a religious service – but the religion is music, and all are welcome. Spoken word artists perform briefly at the midpoint of each concert, many of whom are winners of The Moth StorySLAM events.
“It’s an interesting moment of something completely different from the music, and it often connects with the audience,” Metcalf told Strings magazine in a feature about the series last year. “Then we have a two-minute celebration of silence when we turn the lights down, centering ourselves in the center of the city. Then the lights come back on, and the music starts again out of the silence. We find that the listening and the feeling in the room changes after that.”

Ron Ramin was born and raised in New York City. He earned his undergraduate degree at Princeton University, where he majored in music and studied privately with composer Milton Babbitt. Upon graduation, he moved to Los Angeles where he composed music for 20 Primetime television series and 30 movies/telefilms. Ron is the recipient of a CableACE Award, a Primetime EMMY nomination, and TV/Film Awards from BMI and ASCAP.
In recent years he has shifted his focus to composing for the concert hall. This includes "Golden State of Mind," a symphonic suite depicting the beauty & drama of the California landscape and its cultural diversity. “Greetings!" was given its world premiere performance in 2016 by the Marin Symphony, conducted by Music Director Alasdair Neale.
His latest work, SEVENTEEN, is a narrative work for orchestra and six on-stage Gen Z narrators. Days after the 2018 mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida, librettist Portia Kamons and Ron began to work on an artistic response to the relentless plague of gun violence in American schools and communities. Their attention soon focused on the rising generation of young people channeling their grief and anger into deliberate and effective action. They were bringing extraordinary commitment, determination, and energy to multiple challenges of their time. Ron & Portia were also determined to bring classical music audiences together with young people for an orchestral performance and thoughtful discussion. From the beginning they committed to employ verbatim text from the young Americans themselves. SEVENTEEN is their story, told in their own words.
The Orlando Philharmonic commissioned it and gave the premiere performance Nov 8, 2024. Eric Jacobsen, their innovative music director, conducted the performance and Jamie Bernstein directed the six young on-stage narrators. The orchestra, to its credit, made this a free community event that included a thoughtful discussion and Q&A following the performance. A former Board member of the Society of Composers and Lyricists, Ron currently resides in Northern California and New York City.
