Welcome to What's Our Podcast. I'm your host, Molly Howie. And today we'll be sitting down with a friend or a family member or maybe somebody I don't even know. And we'll be discussing what our possible podcast could be. All right, everybody. Welcome to What's Our Podcast. Today I have two guests. One, Jeff.
SPEAKER_03That's me.
SPEAKER_01Number two, Good Time Steve.
unknownThat's me.
SPEAKER_01I actually have no idea what either one of you do for jobs.
SPEAKER_03We've only known each other for how many years?
SPEAKER_01I y'all do officey things.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, sure.
SPEAKER_01Things in offices.
SPEAKER_05Yes.
SPEAKER_01Which to me is one category of office y things. But we know each other because of the tin roof. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, primarily.
SPEAKER_01And we're here today to talk about dive bars, our love of dive bars, and how dive bars have shaped our lives.
SPEAKER_03100%. The rise and fall and rising.
SPEAKER_05I mean, the three people sitting here are a perfect example of how dive bars had shaped my life. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. 100%.
SPEAKER_011000%.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, yeah, so we met at a little bar down the street, Tin Roof.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01When did you start going there? I know when we started going there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you guys beat me to it by 18.
SPEAKER_01We a couple years. 18 years.
SPEAKER_03Um, I lived in Mount Pleasant for a long time. Well. Yeah, right. Uh, but when I moved to West As when I moved to West Ashley and all was forgiven. Um, yeah, I probably started going there probably 10, 11 years ago, I'm guessing.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_03Because I've lived in that house for 11 years.
SPEAKER_05I was gonna say you've been there at least 10.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so it probably coincided with me moving into that house.
SPEAKER_01Oh, for sure.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I think I was I mean, week two? It was the week after Thanksgiving.
SPEAKER_01I was there, I was there like first weekend.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, because they opened up, they were open Thanksgiving weekend that first year.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I'm super curious to like ridda, like, ask you what it looked like when it first opened.
SPEAKER_05I mean, the the same as without the bras on the ceiling. I mean, uh it's not changed.
SPEAKER_01It's one of those things where it's like take all the decorations down because that like it looks the same except for there's 18 years worth of kitschy shit. The shape of the like every party, like there's still stuff up from like the first New Year's Eve party that they had.
SPEAKER_05The shape of the bar is roughly the same. I think the only things like furniture-wise that were different is they had those that weird corner couch thing in the corner by where the pool table is. Remember that? I think Nick built that.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_05Um, and then I think they had different tables.
SPEAKER_01Oh, the tables are counting gone. Yeah. There was one day that um Johnny Punt called me and he was like, uh, you want to make some heart? And I was like, yeah, and he was like, maybe the tin roof. And I was like, okay. And I get there and we were literally wheat pasting onto the tables. Is that all the leaflets ones for the outsides? Posters. Yeah, they were the ones outside. And like we had cut up his all his posters, and we were just like pasting things on the table. And I'm like, whose idea was this? He was like, I don't know, it's bored.
SPEAKER_03Like, you know, I mean, tin roof falls in a succession of a long and distinguished line of dive bars. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it was a dive bar before it was the tin roof.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Before and before it was a after it was a literal tackle shop. Yeah, bait and tackle.
SPEAKER_01Well, no, the bait and tackle was a bar.
SPEAKER_05Well, I know, but it was a literal tackle shop before that. Like literally a tackle shop. Like you would go there too.
SPEAKER_01I know, but it was always a bait and tackle with a bar, wasn't it? I think so.
SPEAKER_05The bar, I think, came in later. The year I moved here, um, I think it wasn't there were like what year did you move here? Uh 2000. There were like stools there. That was it. Like there was a place to sit and drink your drink of the butterweise you bought out of the cooler before you walked out with you.
SPEAKER_01So the bar bar wasn't there.
SPEAKER_05No, like this I'm trying to remember what the setup was like, but it was it was the inside was vastly different. And then it really changed when they made it bait and tackle.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05That's when they all the outside stuff, and I think the bar got bigger and wider.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Um, and I think where the kitchen is is where like all the coolers and stuff were.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So So let's give everybody a visal visualization of what this place actually does.
SPEAKER_01Do you want to describe it?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I kind of do. Yeah. Um it literally has Which door are you going in? I'm going in the not the stage door, but the front door.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_03Okay. That has a window in the door.
SPEAKER_01There's not a window in that door.
SPEAKER_03Yes, but it's stickered over. Meaning there is zero unless the door is open, there is zero outside light coming through this building.
SPEAKER_05Zero light penetrates what's there, but it's like it's like having three Roman shades. Right. There's like three inches of paper between the outside and the window. Right.
SPEAKER_03So 18 years worth of band stickers. Pollute these two doors. One for the one for the bands to lock in.
SPEAKER_01I do not like the word pollute. My sticker is on that door.
SPEAKER_03Our stickers are on the door. Everybody's stickers. Low tie boy stickers. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Oh, can we just have a podcast about the low tide boys?
SPEAKER_05We can not talk about bars and talk about the adventures of the low tie boys. Speaking of rises and falls.
SPEAKER_03Right. But you walk in and there's there's narrow an actual light bulb. There are just Christmas lights, like there's a couple of like hanging lights above the bar to varying degrees of success. I don't think realize that. Yeah, there is not an actual like light in a socket other than Christmas lights. Oh, it's the pool table. The pool table. All right. I'll give you a little bit more.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the pool table has a light.
SPEAKER_05But uh but yeah, it never sucks. Yeah, but like for the bar, for like where you're doing your drinking.
SPEAKER_01You don't need to be able to see the drink.
SPEAKER_03The the bar top itself is pennies that were in one dime. And one dime. And if you can find it, I forget if that's a I know where it is.
SPEAKER_01I when we were there for the anniversary.
SPEAKER_03Did you find it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I was determined. And what's funny is everybody that works there, they're like, it's right in front of the there's like a specific liquor. They're like, it's right in front of that bottle.
SPEAKER_04I'm like because that bottle is big. Yes. It's like the Midori.
SPEAKER_05Like nobody ever needs or asks for.
SPEAKER_03The floors are painted black on purpose. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because nobody wants to clean them.
SPEAKER_03No. And they will never be clean.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_03Quite on clean.
SPEAKER_05They get cleaned.
SPEAKER_03They get mopped, but I'm I'm telling you, if I'm not clean. If I rubbed it with a wet paper towel, it would come.
SPEAKER_05There is no five-second rule of tin roof.
SPEAKER_03Right. There is one pool table to your left with a mural and a stage to the right of the bar. Two bathrooms going past the bar to the left. Those are kind of considered everybody bathrooms, but we try to tell females it don't look like they belong there to use the ladies' room. That sounds the other corner.
SPEAKER_01That's a polite thing to do because those two bathrooms are horrific.
SPEAKER_05Especially in the summer when it's hot. They're better right now. But like the first one for the long. I mean, it the first one has one of those.
SPEAKER_01And by they, we're not talking about the people that own the tin roof. We're talking about the owners of the building.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. The owners are not doing it.
SPEAKER_01Very different people. I just thought that we would clarify.
SPEAKER_05I think they've done something with the plumbing because there's there's this summer, I think there was less of a piss smell at the height of summer than there has been in years past.
SPEAKER_03So the exhaust fans don't work.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. There is a fart fan in there. There's not a fart.
SPEAKER_03There is, there's like a filter thing above the thing. Yeah, but there could be.
SPEAKER_01They just cut a hole and put it in there.
SPEAKER_05There's a fart hole.
SPEAKER_00And by the way, again, the landmarks.
SPEAKER_05But like that first one has just has the like the hook and latch, like the eye loop and the little thing that just drops in it. And I think for three years, like they would have to be a little bit more. Just did it match up and then some some kid would kick it, kick the door open and bust it out. So like that first one rarely ever locks. So you know. You kind of have to like kick it behind your back to it. Like that's that's the reason why I'm always telling you know ladies, hey, listen, like if just be aware, unless you want to put your foot on the door, that's probably not the one for you.
SPEAKER_01Well, we've been we've been peeing with our foot on the door for years. Well, yeah. Every time we go into a dive bar.
SPEAKER_05But you're a tin roof pro. I mean, like, knowing that that's that's the one you gotta pay attention to.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, I guess you're right. You can kind of spot new people.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You're like, oh, you've never been to one of these before.
SPEAKER_03I'm like, hey, hey, hey, wait, wait, wait. There's a home team. There's a much nicer one behind you over there.
SPEAKER_01Like uh the speaking of dive bars, the mill. Oh the men's room at the mill.
SPEAKER_02I love the story.
SPEAKER_01When girls are like, I'll go, and I'm like, mm-mm. I saw that. I know what they did to that room when they repainted.
SPEAKER_03I will say the men's room at the mill is palatial compared to the men's room at the ten room.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but I know what happens when you spray paint a toilet black.
SPEAKER_05What?
SPEAKER_01Do you know what pee does to spray paint?
SPEAKER_05No. Does it wet spray paint? I don't know. Now I want to go pee on spray paint.
SPEAKER_01Definitely, I mean, go paint a porcelain toilet with a can of spray paint and then spray some ammonia on it. A lot.
SPEAKER_03Does it like bubble and goes away?
SPEAKER_01Oh, so it just gets anky. Takes the paint off.
SPEAKER_05I was about to say, I don't know that I've like the entire I didn't realize the entire thing was painted, but maybe I'm just thinking about the barts that have been pissed on and all the paint's gone.
SPEAKER_01I haven't seen it since they since it was freshly painted because I don't go to the men's room at the mill.
SPEAKER_05I haven't paid attention to it, I guess.
SPEAKER_03So I think the most valuable piece of property at the tin roof is the Ishmael painting. Oh, for sure. Think think of it this way, ladies and gentlemen, and everyone in between. It there's a giant painting, not affixed to a wall, but leaning on a wall.
SPEAKER_01It's a fixed, it's on a um it's got like a reel.
SPEAKER_05It's got a cleat. Is it on a cleat? I thought it's just leaning on a reel.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, sometimes it's just leaning anyway. Um before a band goes up, someone from the bar will physically remove said painting and put it in the corner.
SPEAKER_01It's been stolen.
SPEAKER_03I know. Twice. Twice.
SPEAKER_01Twice.
SPEAKER_05I think it's been stolen twice.
SPEAKER_01I know the first time.
SPEAKER_03Were you involved?
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_05No, no, there's no regular ownership.
SPEAKER_01Uh no, that was some Yahoo that showed up and thought they'd be real cute and funny. And then when the internet went after him, he came back and brought a further.
SPEAKER_05I mean, it's it's worth remembering. This is art proper, proper piece of art.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Like it like it's a canvas painting.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it looks like it looks like dive art.
SPEAKER_01Three by four, three by five.
SPEAKER_05It's big. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Three by four.
SPEAKER_05It looks like dive bar art, but it's you know, there are people that would he's a professional artist. Like that's people pay him a lot of money to make stuff like that.
SPEAKER_03So that is the most that is the most valuable piece of property in there.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. There's some memorabilia behind that bar that could be worth it.
SPEAKER_03Well, there used to be a lot more.
SPEAKER_01I know it all went to Pinkies.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, or to Pete's house.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. Yeah. He just took it home.
SPEAKER_03He's like I'm taking all my things and going home now.
SPEAKER_05I think most of the Baba heads back there are raised, weren't they? Some of them are still there. I think the bombs. Devo's still there. Devo's there.
SPEAKER_03A couple of lunch boxes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. There's some signatures back there.
SPEAKER_03From La Bamba. That's that's always the best one.
SPEAKER_05I think I think you could safely sum up the decor as 18 years of comings and goings of every party you can imagine.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think there's like a um conference badge of mine somewhere clipped up there. Yeah. Just random crap. Yeah. But wonderfully displayed random crap.
SPEAKER_01In the best way. I mean, I think there's still decorations up from Val's wedding. Wait, I think the Vegas thing is still there.
SPEAKER_03The Vegas thing's still there.
SPEAKER_01And they got married.
SPEAKER_03What, seven, eight years ago?
SPEAKER_01Nine.
SPEAKER_03Nine? Was it nine?
SPEAKER_01Has it been nine years? Well, before I met John. Because you and I you were my date.
SPEAKER_05For that wedding.
SPEAKER_01That was a surprise wedding.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Yeah, God bless. It's gotta be that long. We're old.
SPEAKER_01It may be older. No, it's more than ten. Because maybe this is eleven.
SPEAKER_05I was gonna say cat. I think I'm almost positive cat was born, my daughter.
SPEAKER_00How old is she?
SPEAKER_05She's thirteen. Last month. So I think I think I think that was one of the reasons why. Yeah. I think it's one of the nights I came home and like totally woke everybody up in the house because thundering through the front door.
SPEAKER_03Well then that adds a a year or two to my tutelage there because I know it was there. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01At Val's wedding?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Or at least the after party.
SPEAKER_01I mean it was a surprise wedding.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. That was that was a good wedding. Your wedding was great, Molly, but that wedding was it was That's what I mean.
SPEAKER_01I got a tattoo at the Tin Roof.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Which is not something I thought I'd ever say. And also one of those things where I'm like, was that a good idea?
SPEAKER_05I mean, of course it was. Like if, you know, if if if if if if I if I hadn't blown on my money gambling that night, I think I probably would have gotten one too.
SPEAKER_04Oh, is there a yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_01We weren't really gambling.
SPEAKER_04I mean drinking. Or both.
SPEAKER_01We were gambling. That's fine. We were doing a lot of illegal stuff at that party. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Again, it's been 18 years of comins and goins of all kinds of people. I mean, it's the crowd's probably turned over twice, at least that I can think of. At least. Yeah, bar staff. If you think of it like crowd aging in and aging out of tin roof, it's probably in think of it like layers on a on a on a tree. Well, I will say of the Grand Canyon. There's like there's like probably five different layers of people over here.
SPEAKER_03But comparatively to a lot of other quote unquote dive bars in town, we have retained quite the clientele compared to like a downtown dive, for instance. Like those those patronage.
SPEAKER_05How many downtown dives are there? Two or three.
SPEAKER_03I call Roy M1. Oh, Roy Roy M1.
SPEAKER_01Out of here. Go back to Mount Plet.
SPEAKER_05With the nickname.
SPEAKER_01Roy.
SPEAKER_05Whatever. What do you call him? I call him John Daniels.
SPEAKER_02I call him Johnny.
SPEAKER_04You know as long as I have.
SPEAKER_03Shugies might be one. Burns Alley is one.
SPEAKER_05How long have they been around though? Well, no, I take that back. That's not what makes a dive bar.
SPEAKER_01I think one of the things that like for me is the dive bar the day it opened.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That inherently is the question. And this one, not my. Was it created to be a dive bar, or is it just organically a dive bar? Tinroof is organically a dive bar.
SPEAKER_05Initially it was it was well, I'm not going to say what it was. I wasn't one of the owners of it. But I remember like in the early days of Tinroof, it felt like there was a big push to make it like a proper, you know, I don't want to say music venue. Yeah, but like a like a music venue, because there was a lot of effort put into the stage. Um and like getting some pretty kick-ass bands those first like three, four, five years. Some really awesome bands coming through.
SPEAKER_03I mean, there's been some real one.
SPEAKER_05I mean not that there hasn't been since since it went through a period where like that sort of backed off. Yeah. And I remember like Puke started booking some really, really big names.
SPEAKER_03The fact that I got to see the Ataris and Teenage Bottle Rocket inside the tin roof is pretty astounding.
SPEAKER_05Um who else oh that who else someone's just come through last year? Um oh Christ. This not this sentence. That's stupid. Um never mind. That's a great story, Steve. My my own rambrain will catch up in about 20 minutes and I'll blur a band name out.
SPEAKER_01Um have y'all always been dive bar fans?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Yes. I mean, not not like not it doesn't have to be a dive bar. I mean, I the I went to I was a regular in at this place in Portland for a while. And it wasn't really Oregon. Okay. And it wasn't really a dive bar. It was like it was a jazz bar. Um and I mean, but it had the same qualities. There was like one window.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_05There were like four beers on tap and like eight bottles behind the bar. And you played uh what's the keynote, you know, it was but it was it was by and large, it was like it was up on the TV. Yeah. Nice. And because it was Portland, it was sort of you know really RT4 team stuff, you know, but like it was but that's it's got the.
SPEAKER_01When did you live in Portland?
SPEAKER_05That was before Mo and I got married. That was when uh when we were we were dating like where did you grow up? A little bit here, a little bit of there. Virginia mostly. That's where that's where Mo and I met, and then we were dating like six months, and she's like, I got this job at the VA in Portland. So I was like, oh shit.
SPEAKER_03Steve's dad was a spy, so they kind of live everywhere.
SPEAKER_05Kind of.
SPEAKER_01Are you serious?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, he worked for CIA. He had a he well, he worked for he worked for quote unquote State Department.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so what?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you didn't know. Yeah, there's a story.
SPEAKER_01This is not what we talk about when we're at the bars usually. No, no. Your dad was in the CIA.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, we bounced around a lot. I grew up, I was born in Athens, Greece. My sister was born in England. Uh citizens born abroad.
SPEAKER_00I don't even know you.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Yeah, you lived in Africa for a while.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah. I'm kind of in shock just because this morning uh I found out that my friend, my first guest this morning, his dad robbed a bank. Oh yeah, with the mob. So it's like I would thought so. So it's like today to learn that about him and then learn this.
SPEAKER_05So like my old man working for the CIA is not the same as that's probably a bank for the mob is much cooler.
SPEAKER_01He was a banker. Still much cooler.
SPEAKER_05Oh, nice. I mean, but that's still that's still that's proper rock star stuff. Like my old man worked at radio for CIA.
SPEAKER_01He worked at radio.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he was in communications. He wasn't. Kind of. I mean, he had a soft cover. So he didn't officially work for CIA until he retired. And then then you're like, What was his soft cover? He worked for the State Department. He did communications for State Department, even though he was doing communications for CIA.
SPEAKER_01That's what they call soft cover.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Hardcovers like uh he's a forest. Yeah, yeah. Or like you had no idea.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he doesn't work for the government at all. Like the day the day he retired, he brought home like 35 years of like accommodations and like awards and shit like that.
SPEAKER_01That you had no idea he had.
SPEAKER_05No, I knew when I turned 18, he told me we were he was getting his car serviced. Um, and we were walking out of Fairfax, Virginia, and he's like, Yeah, so you know, you're probably old enough to know. Uh like you you think I work for the State Department, right? I was like, Yeah, yeah, that's that's what you do. You do he's like, Well, not exactly. He's like, Do you remember when you're in Egypt and your aunt and uncle, quote unquote, would come to the house once a month? Like, they were getting tapes. Like, dumb shit like that. I was like, what?
SPEAKER_04He's like, Yeah, I work with Uncle Sam. That's crazy.
SPEAKER_05And I'm like, I stopped in the middle of the road. I'm like, what? I mean, that's pretty cool. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Now you can? What's this?
SPEAKER_05Well, A, like, so when he retired, that soft cover gets lifted, and he's also passed away. So like no one's gonna come after us because of anything my dad did. Well, he's a that you know of. Fair.
SPEAKER_01There's some kid that's got a big thing.
SPEAKER_04Somebody's gonna listen to this and be like, oh God, my name was bad. I mean, I might as well just live.
SPEAKER_01There's some child ninja coming after you. Your dad did something to her.
SPEAKER_05You're gonna get the letter.
SPEAKER_01I didn't say your last name.
SPEAKER_04Fair. Yeah. Did you? Just now. Oh, great. Sorry. Good luck spelling it, fuckers. Yeah, that's a good point.
SPEAKER_03Well, to answer your question though, I think uh for me it's always been like, I'm just a kid on a budget. Like I've always been a kid on a budget. Like I do not, I will not, I refuse to go and pay four now, it's more than that, probably eighteen dollars for some cocktail at some place where the techno is drilling my ears out, and everybody is pretentious and stupid looking, and I'd rather just sit in the dark and drink. And that's why I like them. I mean, I just started a web series over it.
SPEAKER_05Like I think I think it's one of the requirements to actually be at dive. There has to be a certain level of quiet drinking. Like happy hours should not be like not shouldn't be, rules to being a dive bar, but by and large, happy hours shouldn't be.
SPEAKER_01I should be able to come in and quietly have a drink alone if I want to.
SPEAKER_05Well, I mean, I I said for the longest time the reason why I kept going to Tinder as as often as I was in that first year and a half, and that's you know, why I kept going there for 18 years, is I would show up and it would just be Me and Nick and I would sit down at the bar. And he didn't he didn't know my name for the first year. He thought my name was Drew. I don't know. We're not even sure what, but like all my tabs were under Drew. He had no idea who I was. And it was just me and him sitting at the bar, and he would he would slide me PVRs and pour me shots. We would not speak between four and six.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Except like, hey, what's going on? Isn't I sat there as a root kind of right? Okay, cool. Here's your here's your passion. Here's your well whiskey. And like that was it. And I was like, this is this is what daddy wants. Daddy doesn't want to touch. Daddy just wants quiet.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But it's definitely like evolved. I mean, friends have come and gone from there, but like there's a solid group that still populates the corner on a Friday afternoon.
SPEAKER_00He didn't show up.
SPEAKER_03I didn't go.
SPEAKER_00Lame. Both of you. I was all the way in Monk's Corner.
SPEAKER_03I was doing nerd shit. I was just sleepy.
SPEAKER_01Well, that was there.
SPEAKER_03I mean, they do it every year. That's fine.
SPEAKER_05She's able to say that with so little judgment in her voice. Do you hear that, Jeff? Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03No, I feel bad. I don't.
SPEAKER_05I mean, I mean I found a dude.
SPEAKER_01I don't.
SPEAKER_05I mean, you know, if there's paying dues, I've paid them. And plus I saw I saw Art and Aaron on Saturday. Yes, correct. We went to the Clownvis show Saturday night. So on that. And I had seen her like the week that that Rockabilly Q, and I had made made my apologies that I would not be able to attend already.
SPEAKER_01Alright, alright, alright, alright.
SPEAKER_03Clownvis, also interesting.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, what a great show that was. That was fun.
SPEAKER_00Where was that? Uh uh.
SPEAKER_05I mean I went for Saturday. I went for Arlie with the flowers. But lovely surprise clown. It was pretty entertaining. When was the third one? It was another Elvis.
SPEAKER_03It was like an evil Elvis clown thing. Yeah. Something. I can't remember the name. Yeah, there were two, there were two Elvises. It was strange.
SPEAKER_01That was the day after Rocket Building?
SPEAKER_03No, day after the anniversary. Oh, sorry, yeah.
SPEAKER_05After that Saturday night. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Kind of had to pick the pick the date on that one.
SPEAKER_01So you still, yeah, but you made it to the anniversary weekend.
SPEAKER_03Oh, sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. See? Y'all did it.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I wouldn't miss that. Unless it was literally out of town.
SPEAKER_05I mean, you know, I had a friend flying from New York. I mean, it would be a dick move. Hey, I know you spent all this money to come in and hang out, but uh, I'm not gonna see you. They could have come into the town. I I I I brought it up, but we're we were the ass on a mic school when it was literally a 40-minute drive. Yeah. I was not gonna go to the top. Uh my the uh buddy of mine, George, got it. He's the he's he and his brother and Ruben are the three that got me back into DD. So like Ruben comes into town once twice a year. We make a weekend of it.
SPEAKER_01Nice.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um fascinated by DD.
SPEAKER_05So fun.
SPEAKER_03I haven't played since high school. So I'd love to get back into it, but I feel like it's just gonna be over my head at this point.
SPEAKER_05No, I don't know. I mean it's not complicated, it's not a hard game to play. I mean, it can be. It it depends on how on how how complicated your GM wants to make the game, wants to make the session of the campaign.
SPEAKER_03Maybe I'll just be a LARP.
SPEAKER_01Lightning bolt, lightning bolt, lightning bolt.
SPEAKER_05Lightning bolt. I think I think like LARPing is like the is a certain evolution from DD.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01LARPing is DD.
SPEAKER_05It's like live action, though. No.
SPEAKER_01In my head it is.
SPEAKER_05In my head it is too.
SPEAKER_01Because I have no clue what it is.
SPEAKER_04I love the idea that you're swinging foam swords but still rolling dice to figure out if you make them. Oh, that'd be hilarious. Like, hold on, put the mat down. Clickety clack.
SPEAKER_05Big foam sword and a big foam D20. Yes. Yeah. That would make LARPing really cool. It would. Get you laid for sure.
SPEAKER_04Like McGlevin and role models.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh. Good times. Um your wife doesn't come to the bar rarely.
SPEAKER_05No. No. I I swear there are people that I've known for years and years that think have a kid.
SPEAKER_01I didn't need a wife for probably eight years of knowing you.
SPEAKER_05It's not that she doesn't drink. She's never had a love affair with bars or having a specific bar that I've had. I mean, no matter where we've lived, um Virginia, Portland, or here. Like she's never, never I don't know. No, I'm not sure. Not understood. But she's she supports it. She doesn't care.
SPEAKER_01There's nothing greater in my life than being a regular somewhere. Oh my god. When someone calls me a like you're a regular here, I'm like, uh, I am. I am.
SPEAKER_05I mean, listen, like it's it's like the I mean I do.
SPEAKER_01I know everybody who works here. I do like that.
SPEAKER_05And like you and you tend to know all the people that are there. Yeah, but like the the best nights for 18 years have always been the regular slights it's in room. Yes, well, I mean, the whole purpose of what we're doing.
SPEAKER_03You just wanted that experience. And now, like, we kind of have that.
SPEAKER_05Sort of the family that you've picked.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I mean, when when I walk into the roof, there's a high life cracked and waiting for where I'm probably gonna end up sitting. Which is one of three stools. Right, right there.
SPEAKER_00Gave out my high life.
SPEAKER_04Did you?
SPEAKER_01Oh too many carbs in that ship.
SPEAKER_04Oh, whatever. But yeah, whatever.
SPEAKER_01You're not in perimenopause, Jeff. Well, okay.
SPEAKER_05Are carbs an issue with perimenopause?
SPEAKER_01I think everything's an issue with perimenopause.
SPEAKER_05Maureen's go to that.
SPEAKER_01My back itches. Why? Why? It's never itched before.
SPEAKER_03You have like a quality back scratcher?
SPEAKER_01I do.
SPEAKER_03His name's John. Yeah, that's it.
SPEAKER_01One of them's name is John. The other one, I it's extendable, so I can get does it make that cool sound when you sneak sticks?
SPEAKER_05You could go like dink.
SPEAKER_00It's yeah.
SPEAKER_05So the other like the the other side of that coin is when it's busy as shit, you don't have to be seen to get a beer. Like I remember like back in the head, they were you know three kids on the city.
SPEAKER_01It was packed as fuck. You could literally just put your hand up. Yep. And they would just be like and people in front of you would be like, How did you get that?
SPEAKER_05And I'm like, you're fucking right. But like at the corner, you just got like the little slot between there. You see whoever's bartender making their way back down the bar, you just kind of put yourself at the end of the bar, make sure they see you that they're that you're there. Well, and then they don't say anything to me.
SPEAKER_03No, they just hand me. Now we we uh we should say that there are a few bartenders that do not abide that rule.
SPEAKER_01Um we don't need to be a bit bag at people that all work there.
SPEAKER_03I'm not mentioning names, I'm just saying that they've been a couple over the years. I got yelled at once. You probably deserved it.
SPEAKER_011,000%.
SPEAKER_03No, no, there were like four passes, and I'm holding, I'm like gingerly holding an empty beer, like, please, and four passes, and finally I was like, blah blah blah, and they're like, shut the fuck up, and I'm like, oh god, okay. Somebody was having a really bad night. It's been a bad night. I'll give you that. I'm shutting the fuck up.
SPEAKER_01I would leave and text Leslie and be like, I could not close out. I'll see you tomorrow.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like, I'll I'll come in tomorrow and I'll close my tab, but I'm not gonna be the one who's like Oh, I've gotten the 9 a.m.
SPEAKER_03text say you forgot to pay your tab.
SPEAKER_01Well, I'll text before I go home.
SPEAKER_05I have ever drunkenly walked on a or soberly walked on a tab before. One of my I'm I'm proud of lots of things, but I'm certainly proud of that one.
SPEAKER_01That's that's probably like well, this was like a conscious, like, you're not gonna be able to get to my tab.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh in the next hour because of how packed it is. Yeah, I'll be back tomorrow.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I mean like that was insane. Like, I knowing how how many beers she would sling across the bar solo was insane.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_05They would have they would be like three, four deep at the bar.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And she just blip up and down. Because that was, you know, I mean Suzanne within was there for a little bit at the beginning. Like she might step in and help, but like there was really only like two bartenders, I think.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It was her and still really only two bartenders.
SPEAKER_05Was there a third bartender?
SPEAKER_01Sean?
SPEAKER_05Kathleen was good at that. This is um I'm talking about like before that. Yeah. Malden was good at that. Yeah, Malden was good at that. Okay. Malden was a great, great volume bartender.
SPEAKER_01You know, Kathleen told my husband she he would never meet a quality lady at the timer.
SPEAKER_04Well, well, guess it's still sucks for her. Guess it's still true.
SPEAKER_03Oh, Molly. You are you are of the highest quality.
SPEAKER_00You are the finest kind.
SPEAKER_03Um I mean, I'm I'm privileged to be a guest on your podcast. Yeah. I mean, you are you are one of our favorite podcast guests.
SPEAKER_01I loved being on y'all's podcast. I loved schooling you about one of the best movies ever made.
SPEAKER_05That was a fun. I I remember that whole that whole evening almost, I sat with my jaw on the table. Because I, you know, I had stuff I wanted to say. That's gonna be really funny. I was really proud of myself, and then you started laying out some knowledge about that movie, and I'm just yeah, you were like, I hate this movie, and I'm like, No, you don't.
SPEAKER_01I I hated it, but I still understood.
SPEAKER_05But I kind of I kind of I didn't hate watch it. It does not that kind of hate. I just I didn't like it, but like there was just so much weird shit about it.
SPEAKER_01Do you know what's seared in your brain forever?
SPEAKER_05Uh, about that movie? Oh kind of.
SPEAKER_01Bill Paxton and that shirt, baby.
SPEAKER_03That and her getting run over by the Bronco. Those are the two things. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So just so everyone knows we're talking about Boxing Helena.
SPEAKER_01Boxing Helena, one of the best movies ever.
SPEAKER_03Is that the first reference you've had on the podcast yet?
SPEAKER_01To what?
SPEAKER_03That movie.
SPEAKER_01Probably.
SPEAKER_03Nice.
SPEAKER_05I'll give you $10 every time you can sneak one in from here forward.
SPEAKER_01Boxing Elena, I can talk about it with everybody. No, I mean, no, you got to ask you.
SPEAKER_05What if I just has to be organic?
SPEAKER_01Boxing Helena, my podcast. It just made every single episode.
SPEAKER_05Tell me what you think about Boxing Elena.
SPEAKER_01Every single episode.
SPEAKER_05I bet you, I bet you you ought to have a hard time repeating the conversation because everyone's gonna say something different about that movie.
SPEAKER_01Uh everybody.
SPEAKER_03Well, it's like the James Lipton questions, like it's like, what's your favorite word? What do you think about Boxing Helena?
SPEAKER_01It was my lymphness test for friends when I was growing up. That was the movie that I played my friends to be like Did they have to like it?
SPEAKER_05I I feel like we talked about this during the episode, but I was maybe a little bit drunk.
SPEAKER_01Did like did they have to like it or just You can't tell me that you don't like that movie.
SPEAKER_05I don't like that movie.
SPEAKER_01I disagree with you both.
SPEAKER_05So uh but it it's the thing, it's it's too I don't know, I know we talked about this. It's not that I don't like the movie for the movie.
SPEAKER_01The watching of it, you enjoyed a part of it. Sure, yeah. And the fascination of it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but the kid and his mom stuff was super weird. Like there was just a lot of weirdness. It's it was that I didn't quite understand.
SPEAKER_05It was super artistic, and I'm the kind of guy that that's gonna get lost on. So like it's it's it's uh this is gonna sound like a breakup comment, but it's it's not it's that's not the it's not you, it's me. Huh?
SPEAKER_00You're just not Lynch fans.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay. It's not Lunchface, I'm like Lynch fan.
SPEAKER_00Lunch face. It's not lunch face.
SPEAKER_05I'm not a I'm not a David Lynch fan.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_05Generally. I mean he even did Dune, and I like the only reason I like that movie is because it was Dune.
SPEAKER_04Really?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Generally that was such an RC4T version of Dune.
SPEAKER_01Have you seen Frankenstein?
SPEAKER_05The one that just came out? The one with uh what's his face? No. That's on my cue. Is that data leads?
SPEAKER_01No, but it's Del Toro, and I'm curious how you feel about it.
SPEAKER_05Similar, because uh Del Toro is the same kind of way for me. Like I and and again, I I I I really don't mean that like they're horrible movie makers. I I sometimes art for art's sake is lost on me. Uh because I am a simple creature. And that is there's no two ways about it.
SPEAKER_01What's your favorite movie? Like your comfort movie. What's your like if I was sick and I'm gonna rewatch a movie?
SPEAKER_05Uh it would be Blues Brothers, Fifth Element, um Time Bandits.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Kind of like art for art's sake, but yet you like Fifth Element. Fifth Element's one of the greatest movies ever made.
SPEAKER_05So that's that's a great mix of like action, funny, and art.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So but the therefore it is not just in our movie. Like, or not art for the sake of being RC Forty. I need more Forty, less RT.
SPEAKER_00Gotcha.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Yeah, those three are probably in there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_05We do we you you and I did a wrap-up. What else did we do?
SPEAKER_03Like we we like what's your Mount Rushmore?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I can't remember what else.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I know mine's like Lebowski Rounders.
SPEAKER_05Oh Rounders. Um, it's so good. That is great movie. So good we've recorded it about three times. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Took you three times to make the separate recordings. Recordings.
SPEAKER_05Our our first episode was Rounders.
SPEAKER_03And our last episode was Rounders.
SPEAKER_05And then we did it once in the middle.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um I don't think we released that one.
SPEAKER_05No. I think we got too drunk in that one.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Well, we got too drunk and two. So the the first one was funny.
SPEAKER_01It's very good that we're somewhere y'all can't drink for my podcast. I mean, I mean, I I I'm okay not that. I'm aware of the saying this is more fruitful because Oh, I don't know.
SPEAKER_05So we would so we have so when when Jeff and I recorded, we would do two a night, and you could always tell which was the second recording. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because everything was a little the words are a little softer, there are no hard consonants in anything.
SPEAKER_03Uh like my intros went real slurry in the second ones a lot.
SPEAKER_05There's lots of me giggling like a hyena in the background.
SPEAKER_03Well, and and there's way more table pounding in the second ones. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's where Good Time Steve comes in.
SPEAKER_03That's where Good Time Steve comes in. Table pounding. You need to table pound it. I swear to God. Your guy.
SPEAKER_04You're good.
SPEAKER_03So if there was one thing I could edit out of our recordings, it would be the constant.
SPEAKER_05I think we stopped an episode once for you to tell me stop doing it.
SPEAKER_03I was like, dude, you're kidding, like my ears are buzzing right now. Yeah. But hey, we were not in a professional setup like this with acoustics on the walls and shit.
SPEAKER_00I know.
SPEAKER_03I mean, like actual nice looking boo mics. We shared a mic for that first. We shared a USB mic for the first five episodes.
SPEAKER_05Our two drunk asses. We literally drank a fifth of whiskey recording a single episode.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Glad we didn't do that forever. I mean, we got close a few times. Can watch it. I mean, I would not have had my quality dissertation about you know Peter Banning and Hook had it not been for copious liquor. Anyway. Good times. Good times.
SPEAKER_01I think that Christopher Walken is my favorite Hook.
SPEAKER_04Oh.
SPEAKER_05What when did he mean?
SPEAKER_01Yes, exactly. This is the question that y'all are all asking yourselves. When did this happen? Yeah, I want to know.
SPEAKER_04Was it some stage?
SPEAKER_01Y'all remember when they were doing the um live action musicals on ABC? They did Sound of Music.
SPEAKER_03No. Like during COVID and Jesus.
SPEAKER_01Is it Carrie Underwood that did Sound of Music? And then they did uh Peter Pan. And Christopher Walken plays Captain Hook. And it is one of the greatest performances because A, they're live. Like they're doing the musical live and recording it and airing it live. And you can see it in Christopher Walken that he is just like, I can do whatever I want right now, and no one's gonna stop me.
SPEAKER_04I can go full walk.
SPEAKER_01And he like delights in being one of the gayest captain hooks you've ever seen because they're like dancing around with like handkerchiefs and like oh my god, it's a good thing. No, no, no, I suck clips of this.
SPEAKER_03I suck clips of this. They're like on the deck of the boat, right? And it is real homo rotting.
SPEAKER_01If you didn't watch the whole thing, you just saw that clip, you would be like, is this AI? Like, this can't actually be Christopher Walken. And you're like, that's the same story. I highly recommend it.
SPEAKER_05Everyone's pausing it to see what's like look in the top right to see what's rated, just in case. Hey Billy, go to bed.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I mean, sorry.
SPEAKER_01Did I just yawn?
SPEAKER_03You've done it. Are we boring you?
SPEAKER_01No, you know that yawning is actually just like not getting enough air. Yeah, I can calm herself.
SPEAKER_05Everything is very menopause. Probably.
SPEAKER_01They haven't studied it, so I don't know. Maybe.
SPEAKER_05Well, look, Maureen's been doing this for like a year and a half. She's been reading into all kinds of stuff. I learned something about once a month.
SPEAKER_01Well, and she's got the scariest experience because there's a woman in her house, and your daughter can fuck her shit up.
SPEAKER_05She fucks her shit up all the time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, but what I'm saying is like I had a friend who was like eight months in to not so like menopause is 12 months without your period.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's what menopause is. And then you're in menopause, you never have a period again.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01My friend was eight months, eight months, eight months in. Eight months.
SPEAKER_05Oh, when you say fuck her shit up, you mean like like she would cycle?
SPEAKER_01My daughter started her period and now she has her period again. So she's all the way back in it. So is that a thing? She's all the way back in it.
SPEAKER_05Is that a thing? Like I I like everyone jokes about getting smoking that's a proper thing.
SPEAKER_01Oh 1000%. Uh my mom went to an all-girls school.
SPEAKER_05That'd be like if Jeff and I had the same jerk-off schedule. But like very different. Very different thing to do about them.
SPEAKER_01I bet you do have the same jerk-off schedule.
SPEAKER_04I text them. Tuesdays and Thursdays are okay.
SPEAKER_05As an alarm on my phone.
SPEAKER_01Yes, no, it's a a thousand percent of Oh man, Kat's not too far away.
SPEAKER_05She's at the edge of it, according to what Maureen's told me. Yeah, so all the physical signs are showing that she's gonna be entering.
SPEAKER_01We'll fuck up her menopause experience. Because they're gonna start playing off of each other. Oh man. And is Maureen on oh, this is a personal question, but maybe I don't ask about Maureen specifically, but like if you're on birth control, then everybody's on their own schedule.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But if there's somebody that's not, that person's gonna get pulled in all the different things.
SPEAKER_03It's like some weird period meditational pool that doesn't exist in my house right now. I did not I mean, again, I've heard this too. Yeah, I just assumed it was like an old life's tale. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. No. If no.
SPEAKER_03Huh. Learn something new every day.
SPEAKER_01Another they used to just put us in a hut, right?
SPEAKER_04For like a week.
SPEAKER_01They were like, ah, it's period time. Y'all all go live in the hut and roll, here's your food and water. Dude, I'm on board for the hut. At this point, if y'all are gonna like push me back in time, then give me the week off in a hut with alma snacks and oh no, no, but that's the thing.
SPEAKER_05You wouldn't have the week off. Like you would they would have a slot to put in like unfolded clothes, and then they would expect folded clothes to come back out.
SPEAKER_01A white slot sir folds no one.
SPEAKER_05I'm talking like if that happened in modern days.
SPEAKER_01Oh look, I don't have any rights anymore. It's fine.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's fine.
SPEAKER_01Okay, white man. Aww me from over there.
unknownJeez.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I'm I mean I slowly slide my chair back from the table. No, I legit feel bad because you're not wrong. Well, that's fucking terrible. It's fucking terrible. Oh, that's a podcast for another day.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but yeah, women do sync up. It's terrifying.
SPEAKER_03It's got cold chill, like just literally thinking about it your life is gonna be real miserable.
SPEAKER_05Gonna change. And I'm not even saying it's menopause, perimenopause otherwise, but Maureen's in a bad mood, you know, the whole house feels it. I'm in a bad mood, the whole house feels it, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well, if anybody in the house is in a bad mood, the whole house feels it.
SPEAKER_05Well, but like I think I I feel like I feel like there's an escalation when it's like hormonal because like it's it's 100% irrational and it's all fucking day, if not longer than a day of complete irrational.
SPEAKER_01No, I'll tell you what's worse is that we're fully aware of how irrational it is.
SPEAKER_05Well, uh yeah, it's kind of I'm fully aware that it's irrational. I'm just gonna let you steamroll me because I don't think I can say anything that's gonna make but like the idea that like Maureen's gonna be in that state, and then Kat's gonna be in that state, and then they're gonna be in that state together. And then like, I'm just gonna Trevor's gonna start drinking early. Or he's I'm gonna make him drive me to the bar. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I think a second is a better option.
SPEAKER_03I can't wait till Trevor gets a license, man. If he ever does, he's gonna DD us.
SPEAKER_05He's not motivated.
SPEAKER_01How old is he?
SPEAKER_05He'll be 16 the summer.
SPEAKER_01He's not motivated? Well, actually, I've learned this that most kids are not motivated. Where are they gonna go?
SPEAKER_05His best palette doesn't even know how to ride a bike.
SPEAKER_01No, I can't say because I didn't learn how to ride a bike until I was an adult.
SPEAKER_02Really?
SPEAKER_01I had this thing okay, I'm gonna tell you this story. I had this concept in my brain that your dad is supposed to teach you how to ride a bike. My dad never taught me how to ride a bike.
SPEAKER_05Oh, so he was the only one that got it.
SPEAKER_01So I never learned. And like I kind of tried at 16 and like rode for like a little bit, but it wasn't great. And it wasn't until I was an adult that I wonder if they make balance bikes for adults.
SPEAKER_05Because that's how we did that. We just bought Trevor a balance bike and turned him loose. But like the idea is like No, there's no pedals. It's just two wheels. And the idea is you keep your feet on the ground and you lift them up and you go down hills and you're like you flintstones yourself on the bike. And then that's how you teach yourself the balance. You flintstone your feet, yourself going to lift your feet up. I've never heard of it. And then you flintstone your feet or you go down a hill and keep your thing.
SPEAKER_01Is there a place to put your feet? You just have to hold them up.
SPEAKER_05I'm I I think Trevor's had two little pegs. Okay. So like so like if you're if he was going down a slow phone.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, that's what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_05But yeah. I I don't think they all do though.
SPEAKER_01Interesting.
SPEAKER_05And then he just learned how to balance himself on the bike, and then one day we bought him one with pedals and didn't say anything about it. He just rode off.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Like, okay. He just learned how to ride a bike.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I have an electric bike now, I love it.
SPEAKER_05But I like I like the idea of an adult sized balance bike.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh, those are just like electric bikes, aren't they? Kind of.
SPEAKER_01No, you still mine as a pedal.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you have to pedal to get started, those things, don't you?
SPEAKER_01Pedal to start, and then you can speed it up. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Does it have like the throttle where you're no, mine's pretty.
SPEAKER_01Um mine's like a pretty basic. It's not any of the big things.
SPEAKER_05I would only look for that as feature.
SPEAKER_01It looks like a little cruiser.
SPEAKER_05I wouldn't look for that as a feature so I can go ram ram with my head.
SPEAKER_01It's a thumb.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, going ram ram with your thumb doesn't have the same effect of giving your own. It doesn't do that.
SPEAKER_01No. Just do that.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03Except for the audience at home, they're all gesticulating mildly.
SPEAKER_01The wrenching and penis. That's a rare.
SPEAKER_03Guys, this isn't on video. Nobody knows what you're doing with your hands right now. No, they know.
SPEAKER_01Exactly what we're talking about.
SPEAKER_03Well, but uh Maureen has shown up a little more often at the bar lately over the last year. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So the kids are getting older. And we've been doing pub at 61. So like her other thing is she doesn't she doesn't go out out generally.
SPEAKER_01But she's not like she's not a-tub at 61, not calling me. I'll go meet you at the pub.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah. So we we start at Tin Roof these days, and then um now we're old, and when the band starts warming up, we're like that doesn't sound like it's a good band.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and I think it's half my fault because I'm closer to home. And then it's on your way.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. It's way further out of my way, but I do it anyway. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05But she'll she'll go there because it's it's almost home. Yeah, and it's it's a proximity thing. And I don't think, especially as the band starts getting fired up. Um, and there's a couple of close talkers these days at Tinder Roof that she's not a big fan of.
SPEAKER_01Oh close talkers.
SPEAKER_05Those close talkers.
SPEAKER_01That's a downside to a dive bar.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and they're not, they're not that it's it's not something that's ever present, but like the last couple of times she's been like next time I see her.
SPEAKER_01Is it who I think it is?
SPEAKER_05What's that? You know, she'd probably be okay with that idea.
SPEAKER_04Because like, yeah. Is it who do I think it is? I'll tell you later. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Off mic. Come on.
SPEAKER_03Oh no, I just wanted you to rat them out.
SPEAKER_05No, no, because it it's not I I don't I don't I don't say that to be the negative about them, but just like Maureen doesn't do well with. Especially because she's she doesn't drink a lot either, so she's usually gonna be the soberest person in the bar nine times out of ten. And that's there's nothing worse than being around.
SPEAKER_01I went to the tin roof recently. Um what was it? I can't remember what oh, it was the tail end of the last studs show. Oh, yeah. And I was a night way too sober to be there.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I was I was the drunk talking to Elena Lena that night.
SPEAKER_01It was one of those nights where I was like, I'm glad I came, but I'm really ready to go.
SPEAKER_03You could like hear Valerie from the parking lot. You can hear Valerie from the parking lot.
SPEAKER_01There she is.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's a good thing.
SPEAKER_01That I'm used to. I mean, she's the reason why we had to move trivia inside because the neighbors were complaining about how loud.
SPEAKER_03From a band.
SPEAKER_05From a band.
SPEAKER_01From a singular voice.
SPEAKER_05Did I ever tell you my my my vowel star with my my buddy John, who's not a regular at any bar, at least as far as I know, went through went to went there for trivia one night and she's flinging out like like Oprah, flinging out jello shots.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And so, like, you know, it's one of those nights. And next thing I'm I'm not paying attention to the trivia. I think I'm talking to someone else who's sitting at our table, and John nudges me at one point and goes, Steve, Steve, she's got her tits out. I didn't even look up at her. I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like that's the funny part is trying to watch her get them back in. She can't do it. She can now, they're smaller, but when they were still big, like she would legit pop them out and then not be able to get them back in. And then you're just like laughing too hard to help her.
SPEAKER_05You know? Just someone someone having to come in with the assist. Wait, do you do you hold the boob or the shirt? Like, which is what's the appropriate way?
SPEAKER_01I don't remember. This would be a good choice, good question to ask her. But like, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Well, and for the listening audience, she is in no way offended that we're talking about her like this right now.
SPEAKER_01She's still proud of herself. She's so you talking about.
SPEAKER_03She's already a gay on the biggest.
SPEAKER_01She's already been here. I think we've already talked about her tits.
SPEAKER_05She knows she's a boss. Well, I I can't think of too many times that her boobs have not come up.
SPEAKER_01It's it's a regular thing on my wall.
SPEAKER_05That's right, you do.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she did those boob paintings.
SPEAKER_05I think I I think I bought one for somebody once.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I guess she did a whole show and she cut them all off.
SPEAKER_05She was at um uh what was she at Mondoroo or something like that? No, that was you. That was I I thought that was your vaginas. Yeah. But I know I know I know I bought one and gave it to somebody.
SPEAKER_01I bet you bought it at the Tin Roof. She had a show at the Tin Roof.
SPEAKER_05Was it there?
SPEAKER_04It could be. I'm old.
SPEAKER_01It's like 20 years ago.
SPEAKER_04Come on, you're supposed to snap back any more than 18.
SPEAKER_0118 years ago. Um, we're getting close. Is there anything else we need to say? Oh god, no.
SPEAKER_04I mean, we could go all day.
SPEAKER_01I know we can.
SPEAKER_05I mean, go.
SPEAKER_01Top uh top Tenroof memory. Fuck. Um just throw one out there.
SPEAKER_05I don't know. I mean, I've had I've had some of the some of the greatest nights of my life in there. Um I mean, it's outside for my marriage and my kids in terms of hanging out with people. I I'd say I'd say the low tie boys night was a big one. Not just for the bar stuff.
SPEAKER_03The practices were even fun in there.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god, the practices. I mean, I and I I only say those then they stand out so much because that was like doing doing low tie boys was a big thing for me. Because I don't I get a stutter if I talk in front of more than four or five people. Yeah. So they got the idea I was dancing.
SPEAKER_01For those of y'all not in the know, Low Tie Boys was a local all-male dance review.
SPEAKER_05Charity dance review.
SPEAKER_01Charity dance review.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. It was amazing.
SPEAKER_01I think COVID really was the death.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah. Well, it was the birth and death. The first. Yeah, because our our first show, we were we were hotter than shit that night, man.
SPEAKER_01We just oh my god, y'all destroyed it.
SPEAKER_05We were we were we were so popular that night that we were pissing off bars and DJs because we were drawing people away from the bar to come watch us dance. Like beside Dig. I didn't see it, but evidently there was some grumbly faces because people were walking out of Dig and like to come into the green space and hang out with us. And we know we were at we were there like at least 30 or 40 minutes doing our thing and talking and checking out.
SPEAKER_03Oh man. Yeah, like that that St. Patty's Day was just the pinnacle. Yeah, and that's it. It was the problem was it was our Apex Mountain, yeah, and it was also the last really good thing that we ever did.
SPEAKER_01No, the calendar came after.
SPEAKER_03Well, the calendar and all that, but I mean, as far as performance, we did the side parade, but like it just wasn't the same.
SPEAKER_05It was the it was the the St. Paddy's Day parade event right before lockdown.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05So like we had a lot of people.
SPEAKER_01Like it was one of those are we still doing in it's like not officially, but we are. Yeah, yeah, yeah like it was an unofficial St. Paddy's.
SPEAKER_05I mean, we didn't that they they stopped the block party, yeah. But the bars stayed open. Yeah, they kind of decided that they could still do that.
SPEAKER_01They're like, we still have too much alcohol, we have to get rid of it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, good problem.
SPEAKER_05Oh, did we help with that too? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay, how about you? Um, a couple come to mind. Um like I said, seeing seeing the Ataris in a venue that small reminded me of seeing them when I was in college.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And even smaller than when I saw them in college. Like they were playing, you know, 800-person places when I was in school. And you know, my buddy Chris and I would travel, we traveled all over. We saw them like five of five or six nights in a row on their tour, yeah. Back when we were like freshmen in college. And um Chris was out like signing or you know, selling merch. I mean, because he he's not a millionaire or anything. And um, I was like, hey, can you make a little video for my buddy? It's his birthday today. Yeah, I'm at this show and he's all the way out in California. And he made him a little video, and like I sent it over to him. He just blew his mind. Yeah. So that's one of them. Um Art and Aaron's wedding, the reception. That was a great night. That was a phenomenal night. Uh God, I've I've met girlfriends in there. I've been broken up with it there. There's a lot of lore. A lot of lore in that place, you know. Uh it's just it is one of those things that, you know, regardless of other places I will roam where I will have a drink prepared and ready for me. Um, there are two others other than Tinroof. That's still like TR is my home base. Yeah. You know, like it's it's where I'll get started. It's where Wharf learned to socialize with other humans, you know. I bring him into the bar.
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_03And him and Puke became like best friends. Pew could just like carry him around serving drinks. Yeah, you know. Yeah, I mean, it was, it's it's uh it's a place that can't really be replicated, you know. I mean, on the diviness scale, like how divy is this place? It's very high. Yeah, it floods, it smells weird, yeah. You know, like the lighting sucks.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you've I've definitely taken people there that have been like, oh, this is where you hang out.
SPEAKER_05The AC doesn't always work in the summer, right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like the kitchen will like billow with smoke sometimes. Like there's just weird shit. Like the the mixing board looks just like a mishmash of wiring. Somebody cleaned it up the other day, like wiped it down? No, cleaned the wiring up. It is pristine looking now.
SPEAKER_05I mean, that's still the tin roof.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. He took out probably 300 feet of cable.
SPEAKER_05I wonder if it's that newer sound guy that took out over the colour. It is, yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_03He's like, I'm tired of looking at this. And he just started ripping stuff out.
SPEAKER_05Because I think Todd Todd did that like five, six, seven years ago, I think.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05What about you, Molly?
SPEAKER_01I mean, I met my husband there.
SPEAKER_05So you don't have to say that just to make him feel good.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_05Who was also in the low tie boys?
SPEAKER_01I my one of my favorite nights there um would have been after the doors were locked.
SPEAKER_03Also those. I don't want I don't want to say those because of whatever.
SPEAKER_01I don't do them anymore, but the nights that I would they would literally lock the door and I would light up a cigarette.
SPEAKER_03Yep, ashtrays would come out.
SPEAKER_01And I was like, am I smoking in the tin room? Oh my god, I'm smoking in the tin room.
SPEAKER_03Like, yeah, because they put it in 10708.
SPEAKER_01I was like, oh, this is also my home. Yeah. Like, yeah, like I feel like it's my home, but they feel like it's my home too.
SPEAKER_03And those five people that are in there with you, yeah, you're closer.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I think it's I think it's kind of why I have a hard time picking a moment because it's all from the same.
SPEAKER_01And that's the only moment you could talk about. Like, I wanted a top, a top moment.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because I I texted Aaron the other day and I was like, I would not have the life I have at all had that bar not existed.
SPEAKER_05I I wouldn't have. I mean, one of my friends.
SPEAKER_01I wouldn't have any of my I wouldn't have any of my friends. Yeah, I I don't I only have one friend that I didn't meet at the Tin Roof that's a close friend.
SPEAKER_03It's like a fraternity, but you join $2.50 beers at a time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like everybody else I met, either at or through someone that I met.
SPEAKER_05And to make it even more like family, there's a lot of people in there that we uh have been asked to leave and are on the outs with the family, so to speak, but then still find their way back constantly and still fuck up and then have to go away for a little bit. I mean, it really is. It's it's a like the the best nights, whether it's the after hours, lock-in or whatever, have always been the regulars' nights. Like if if if I walked in, not that I hated seeing bands, but if I walked in and and you were sitting there, Molly, or you came in or Jeff was there, or like five, six, seven people, that's all it needed. Yeah, five, six, seven regulars. It's gonna be acist. There's no there's no band, so it's not gonna be crowded with people that I don't know. Yeah, yeah. Like if it's a Friday with no band, that is those are the nice so that I would text more like, hey babe, uh, I won't be home for dinner.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the bar is quiet. I'm gonna stay here. Yeah. Well, guys, that's our time.
SPEAKER_03Ah, sucks.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Thanks for coming.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, thanks for having us.
SPEAKER_01Thanks for being a part of my dive bar family. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_03It's it's been a privilege. Thanks for putting us on the podcast. Yeah, this has been super fun. And now I see how you actually should have to be like, wow, that mixing board looks like a synthesizer from the 80s. That thing's dope.
SPEAKER_01All right, let's go have a beer.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. All right. That sounds great. Twist my arm.
