Building Bridges: The Pastor-Music Director Relationship Explored
Hi. So in this video we're going to talk about the relationship between the pastor and the music director. Let's discuss the components needed to have a healthy relationship so that everything goes smoothly. If this relationship is not effective, it can cause a divide between not only the music department but the entire church Vision. The music director needs to actually believe and have a great handle on the vision. What's the pastor trying to accomplish and then what is the vision of the music director? You want to make sure that both goals go hand in hand, that you're not clashing in any way.
Speaker 1:Number two communication. Speaking on a regular basis concerning success and failures will actually make both of you the music director and the pastor, become better leaders. And communication doesn't always have to be in a verbal form. It should be sometimes in a service where the pastor can look at the music director in a certain way and the music director knows exactly what's meant. The music director should actually know if something is liked or not liked. When you do this, you actually ensure that growth takes place.
Speaker 1:And my last point correction or redirection. Remember correction should always, may always be done in private. There's no good time to reprimand leadership in front of others. This is embarrassment and could in some ways be considered abuse. I know it's tempting to say something at the moment, but you have to consider the overall effect. Actions like this could not only hurt the music department, but it could have an effect on church as well. Remember, the musician is influential, so correction could go something like this hey, I noticed you really weren't with me on that last song, let's go over. Like this hey, I noticed you really weren't with me on that last song, let's go over it together. Or what do you need to ensure that when I sing something, you follow me?
Speaker 1:Or from the music director, it could go something like this hey, pastor, I want to make sure that we're serving to the best of our ability. Is there any way that you can give me a heads up? If there's something that you need, doing it this way keeps the respect from both parties. You got to consider you're dealing with grown people and we don't want to offend them because we actually care. So to my pastors good musicians are really hard to find, so do whatever you can to strengthen that relationship between them, not only as a musician but as a leader.
Speaker 1:And to my musicians good pastors are hard to find. If you come across a good pastor somewhere that you don't mind serving, do all you can to ensure that you're leading correctly. But growth is taking place. So make sure that you do have a great understanding of vision. Make sure that you do have a great understanding of vision, communication and correction. It's not good enough to just say you served for 30 years, 20 years, 5 years, 10 years and you have not grown. I want to see us grow in the area of the music department.
