You can spend years trying to “figure out your calling” and still feel stuck, because the question itself might be the trap. We’re flipping the script: instead of hunting for one perfect gift, we’re talking about the many gifts God has already placed inside you and how to choose the right one for the season you’re in. If you’re a musician, creative, leader, or faith-driven builder who feels pulled in more than one direction, this conversation is for you.

Rico Anthony shares a practical, lived-out view of purpose that makes room for real life: music director, teacher, mentor, content creator, branding and media work. These aren’t competing identities. They’re different expressions of the same core gifts, applied where they’re needed. We dig into the mindset shift that helps multi-talented people stop seeing themselves as “scattered” and start seeing themselves as called to faithful stewardship, growth, and service.

We also name the pressure that quietly shapes your choices: other people’s expectations. When you’re known for one skill, everyone asks you to do that one thing, and it’s easy to mistake requests for boundaries. But every gift has a season, and maturity means noticing what the moment requires. Sometimes leadership matters more than talent. Sometimes encouragement changes someone’s life more than a flawless performance.

If you’ve been asking, “Which gift should I use?” try this instead: “Which gift does this moment require?” Subscribe to the Brother Musician Podcast, share this with a friend who feels boxed in, and leave a review with the gift you’re choosing to develop next.

Rethinking The Calling Question

SPEAKER_00

Have you ever heard someone say, I'm trying to figure out what my gift is, trying to figure out what my calling is? I think that's the wrong question. I think the question should be, which one of these gifts should I use in this season? I don't think you should be limited just to one gift. The better question is, what gifts has God given me and am I using all of them? Too many people spend years searching for one gift and you have multiple gifts, many gifts inside of you that are sitting dormant. I don't believe God limits us to one gift.

Many Gifts With One Purpose

SPEAKER_00

Look at my life. I'm a music director, I'm a teacher, I'm a mentor, I produce content, I teach piano lessons, I work on media and branding. Those aren't competing callings, those are different expressions of the gifts that God has already given them. Each one serves a purpose.

Expectations And Seasonal Gifts

SPEAKER_00

Now here's the problem. Sometimes people are known for one gift, and that's all anyone expects from them. If you're a great keyboard player, people ask you to play. If you're a great singer, people ask you to sing. If you're a great preacher, people ask you to preach. But that doesn't mean those are your only gifts. Don't let people's expectations define the limits of your calling. Every gift has a season. Not every gift is meant to be used every day. Sometimes your leadership is needed more than your musical ability. Sometimes your gift of encouragement may change someone's life more than anything you could ever play on the keyboard. The mature person recognizes what the moment requires.

Take Inventory And Choose The Moment

SPEAKER_00

Here's a challenge. Take inventory of your gifts. Which ones are you developing? Which ones have you neglected? Which ones have you allowed fear of other people's opinions to put you in a shell or box? God doesn't expect perfection, He expects faithful stewardship. So stop asking which gift should I use? And start asking, which gift does this moment require? Develop every gift. Honor every gift. Use every gift God has entrusted in you. Because every gift has the potential to make an impact when it's used at the appropriate time. I'm Rico Anthony.
