EP 10: When the NFL Takes Over Your Relationship

Jasmine and Ernesto Season 1 Episode 10

When marriage collides with football season, chaos (and laughs) follow.

Jasmine and Ernesto get real about what it’s like when NFL games take over Sundays, family time disappears, and partners count the days until February.

Ernesto opens up about his own football past and the lesson he learned the hard way, hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard while Jasmine shares how consistency matters just as much in content creation as it does on the field.

Mixed in are lighter moments fall decorating plans, birthdays, and Jasmine’s plan to finally learn to ride a bike.

Whether you’re the football fanatic or the one waiting for the season to end, you’ll find relatable insights and a few laughs in this episode.

Speaker 1:

Hey guys, welcome back to real love, real life podcast. I'm your host, jasmine.

Speaker 2:

And I'm Ernesto. I feel like I always say my name wrong, ernesto.

Speaker 1:

Ernesto Ernesto why?

Speaker 2:

Because I ain't saying it like that.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you gotta say it with like Ernesto For real, huh we were all remember. The other day in the car everybody was trying to roll their R's.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

And one. I think one of the boys can do it. I can Like I could do it. You're getting better, but not all the way. Okay, you guys, it is, fall is literally around the corner. Yep, so excited. I can't wait to decorate, like it's literally like three more days right and I get to decorate the bins are coming out.

Speaker 1:

I'm so excited. I can't wait to decorate. Like it's literally like three more days right and I get to decorate. The bins are coming out. I'm so excited I have so many blowups. I will have the best house on the block.

Speaker 2:

We've got a lot of blowups now, for, like the fourth year in a row, we've been accumulating.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Every year. I feel like, with, like yeah my first year I had like two little like Walmart like $20 blow-ups, and now it's like okay.

Speaker 1:

I don't have enough yard now. We got some deeper ones, we're loaded. Oh yeah, I took shop ones. Yeah, tiktok shop we're loaded um, okay, but today is, I feel like I love the fall, but I feel like I'm getting ready to put my boxing gloves on, because it's going to be me versus the NFL very soon.

Speaker 2:

Football season Every Sunday, don't you?

Speaker 1:

hate it.

Speaker 2:

Not really Look forward to it.

Speaker 1:

Okay, well, I know that there is so many wives that can relate to me.

Speaker 2:

They're just like oh man, I'm sick of this.

Speaker 1:

And it's not that we're haters. It's literally like we don't see our husbands until February.

Speaker 2:

That's true. We can't count on our husbands for how come you guys started getting into it then. Well, because In the beginning it's like boring, but then the playoffs come around. Then you guys are all into it. We're all planning the Super Bowl and stuff. Then you guys are like all into Mahomes' family because they're always winning.

Speaker 1:

Okay, but because it's like a in the beginning, it's tough, okay, yeah you got to get used to it.

Speaker 2:

You guys just want to be.

Speaker 1:

That's all you guys want to do Monday. What is it Monday, thursday, sunday?

Speaker 2:

Monday, thursday, sunday, yeah, okay.

Speaker 1:

And so that's annoying School all that, and you guys are just stuck on the TV.

Speaker 2:

Mostly on Sunday, though.

Speaker 1:

And then Sundays. It's like I can't count on you for anything.

Speaker 2:

I mean Sunday's, a relaxing day.

Speaker 1:

Sundays are like to go out and stuff and you, just like the guys, just want to be like sitting on the couch all Sunday.

Speaker 2:

Why not you guys hate when we're out? You guys, pick one, you guys don't want us in the street, but when we're at home watching football, it's a problem.

Speaker 1:

Because there's limits. There's limits.

Speaker 2:

Why? Because we can't. None of the focus is on you guys.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

That's messed up.

Speaker 1:

But we do know some marriages that there is a lot of tension during football season.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's tough. It's tough Like I feel like you're a little bit more like in the beginning. When I met you, I feel like you were like super into football. Now you've kind of like let it go a little bit, yeah, into football. Now you've kind of like let it go a little bit yeah, and but I like we can. We know some people that it's like dude like I, I can't, I can't unglue him like from the couch yeah, they watch it like that.

Speaker 2:

Their life depends on you can't like book anything.

Speaker 1:

Can't book like a vacation. You can't book anything. You can't like anything that requires your husband to be there like don't book don't book it because, it's football, like you know. It's serious once you get all the like, the extra sporting apps, all that stuff oh yeah, like you got like 10 different monitors the people that do that, I will say I'm like, I'm grateful that he doesn't do that. Like, he watches like all.

Speaker 2:

I'll watch like one game and then YouTube the rest. To watch the good parts All the highlights, like alright.

Speaker 1:

But like the people that have to like, bid on like every game.

Speaker 2:

I don't know. I used to really watch it a lot, but then now it's just like I don't know, it's not the same.

Speaker 1:

I feel like a lot of people don't know that you used to play football yeah, I used to play football when I was younger can you tell us a little bit about it? It was fun when did you start?

Speaker 2:

man, I don't remember. I was like in elementary school, I'm probably gonna say like seven years old that's when you started playing yeah, I think so when when did you think like?

Speaker 1:

you had like you, you knew you liked it and you wanted to like like. When did you start getting your hands on a football then, or was it before that?

Speaker 2:

no, I felt like growing up in the neighborhood everybody played sports, so we're all competitive, and then, obviously, my dad signed me up.

Speaker 1:

Around there, around seven.

Speaker 2:

I'm going to say yeah, I'm going to say like seven, eight, yeah, because I played flag football and then I went to tackle football and I played for a while. Then I just kind of gave up on it.

Speaker 1:

But it was really fun. Why did you give up on it?

Speaker 2:

Just made bad decisions. Hanging out in the streets Instead of going to football practice. You're going to the block.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, did you ever think that like you had like a chance to make it and stuff?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I mean I had coaches that would push me. One of my coaches was actually professional and you know, obviously I was pretty talented so you know he always like treated me good and talked to me and kind of kept it real. But I felt like I could go far. I felt like I was always usually better than most of the people around me yeah, usually faster than everybody I feel like so.

Speaker 1:

If you go in his mom's like garage and stuff, there's like trophies, there's like all sorts of stuff your dad has a whole box of like what is it? Cassettes yeah, from like recording sets from like recording him, like all of like his highlights and all this cool stuff.

Speaker 2:

Like if you were to watch that you'd be like, wow, like I feel like those are like the highlights that like a lot of the pros yeah when they like, put their highlights when they're kids. That's how mine, that's how they look like I i't know.

Speaker 1:

I wouldn't have imagined it, but when you started showing us those, it really looks like you really enjoyed yourself and you were really good at it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it was fun. Yeah, I do miss it a lot. I guess I lost the love, the passion for it. But I still think back and reminisce and stuff.

Speaker 1:

When, when did you like officially like quit, like, how old were you?

Speaker 2:

I think 13 or 14. I know, I think I was like in eighth grade.

Speaker 1:

So you played for like a good seven years.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I played for a long time. That's, that's that's my life revolved around it.

Speaker 1:

And I feel like, even though that seems like a very long time, I feel like for like how good you were, like you would think that like you had been like running around with a football like under your arms, since you were like three or four, yeah, I mean, I was like that's the thing.

Speaker 2:

I feel like we grew up in a good time, Cause we were always In the streets Like running around.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you could be Outside and stuff.

Speaker 2:

We were playing Tackle football In the middle of the street, like I don't know.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it was different back then. Yeah, you were built Different than like.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so I don't know I miss it, though it was fun. Do what I miss it though it was fun.

Speaker 1:

I'm going to get a little bit personal. Do you regret quitting?

Speaker 2:

I do.

Speaker 1:

You do. Oh, babe, I want to give you a hug, Air hug, because we can't move the mic. Oh, that's so, I didn't know that.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's kind of tough, like you know how, when you say you don't like to reminisce about your childhood. Yeah, that's one thing I don't like to think about because I'm like man.

Speaker 1:

Oh, do you ever feel like? I know that your mom was kind of like, eh, you know like to her it was like for one. She was worried all the time that you would get hurt. And she saw you get hurt one time, right you hit your head you had a concussion or something and while your dad he was like, I mean, he's till this day, he's 70, 71 years old and he, like, will not miss a football game. How do you have you ever talked to him about it? Like, have you guys ever talked?

Speaker 2:

about it? Not really.

Speaker 1:

Really, do you think?

Speaker 2:

I mean we talk about like some stuff, but not like the quitting part.

Speaker 1:

Okay, did he show like was he upset when you quit?

Speaker 2:

Oh yeah, he was big time.

Speaker 1:

Really oh. Pushed hard for big time, really oh.

Speaker 2:

Pushed hard for me to keep playing.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and I feel like knowing your dad, how like he's so stubborn too I mean he literally proved to us how stubborn he was when he had cancer and stuff Like we were all just like not to be mean, but we were all just like okay, like this is the end of it. You know he's old and he it was like so bad. And he would say himself like he was like I'm not going anywhere. Like I'm going home to my grandkids and blah blah blah and like he did. Literally.

Speaker 2:

So I could see him being like really stubborn and like not letting it go like that, yeah, especially if I'm like was pretty good.

Speaker 1:

So obviously so, even if you lost like kind of the love for it, you would never do anything like that. Revolves yourself around that like, either like train kids or you know something around.

Speaker 2:

I don't know, I just or.

Speaker 1:

Or does just the whole, Like I've?

Speaker 2:

been a long way. I've been away from it so long that it's just kind of foreign to me now.

Speaker 1:

Oh, that makes sense.

Speaker 2:

Like now. I'm just If it doesn't revolve around a construction site, like you don't know. It's like that's Everything else is foreign.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

It's because time passed so fast. Yeah, now it's like all this time working construction, now it's like anything to do with a job site, like that's like my football field now yeah, that's crazy trading a football for a tape measure that's, that's crazy I feel like a lot of people that end up in construction, though had like a lot of talent and gifts. We just weren't disciplined enough to keep going.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

I feel like there's a lot of talented people in the construction field.

Speaker 1:

Have you met any like that? Have shared their Lots?

Speaker 2:

I feel like it seems like T-Pain. Nah, that fool is actually, I guess, a theater kid.

Speaker 1:

Oh really. Yeah, that's why he's all I want to, that's why he's all delicate. I want to go on the job site and interview this guy.

Speaker 2:

Oh, that'd be crazy.

Speaker 1:

Oh, that's so sad. I want to go and the job site and interview this guy.

Speaker 2:

Oh, that'd be crazy. Oh, that's so sad. I don't want to go and rescue everybody. I feel like a lot of us at work construction. One time my boss said it best is like we're all settlers. We settled for this. I'm like damn he ain't lying. Yeah, y'all working right there.

Speaker 1:

You're like, damn, he ain't lying about that you're all mad, but you're like, you know what you're right like you make a good living and all that.

Speaker 2:

But you're just like, yeah, I didn't. I wasn't in middle school saying, yeah, I want to be an insulator, yeah, but you know it's a good living and stuff. So it's like you can't be that ungrateful. But you know, I'm saying when you're're wrapping some duck you're like yippee, yippee-yay.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

But hey, that's why, if you have a passion for something, you got to keep pushing on it.

Speaker 1:

Have you ever shared this like with our kids? About what Like regretting, not Like you like being so talented and like you stopped because friends, things like that.

Speaker 2:

Well, I feel like I always tell them. I feel like I always tell them, obviously, you know, I tell them that hard work beats talent. Yeah, because obviously you can have all the talent in the world, but if you don't show up, it doesn't matter.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

So it's all about. It's better to be consistent and hard working than talented that's true so now that I'm older, I'm like. You know hard work beats talent. I know that firsthand yeah discipline I agree so now that's something I could push to my kids. You got to be the hardest worker and the most consistent and the most, you know, determined, just like Kobe, you know, just always showing up first to leave, first to get there, last one to leave yeah it doesn't matter if you're the strongest or the fastest.

Speaker 2:

As long as you're working hardest, you'll get the results.

Speaker 1:

And I feel like that's kind of the way with like everything and we live in a time where everything is like to show right. You go on Instagram and you have to show this like lavish life, like where are you going to dinner next? What are you doing next? Where are you traveling to next? Like where are you going to dinner next? What are you doing next, where are you traveling to next? And it's like what are you really doing for yourself, like on the back end.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Like are you working on yourself, like when people like aren't watching? You know I get it Like. You know you spend this much at a restaurant because there's people that love to post how much they spend, or like at a dinner, or you know, obviously we all want to show like the good right. The good side of everything, the good side, but are you putting in the work for it?

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Right, like behind the scenes.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, a lot happens behind the scenes.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

That's why you got to like. You got happens behind the scenes, yeah, that's why you gotta like. You gotta love the grind.

Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, and you always have to be keeping yourself like Kind of like, like updating literally like a phone, like a computer like you have your software yeah yeah I I was talking to um another like influencer, content creator, um she.

Speaker 1:

We went out to dinner, to lunch, and she was telling me about like her content creation journey. And she was telling me about like her content creation journey and and she's like I feel like I could have been like a lot you know bigger but she said she stopped because she felt stuck, Like she couldn't. She was like I feel like if you're not constantly like with like the flow of things, like you're not like how we're saying, like you're not updating yourself, you kind of like lose it or people get bored of you yeah, you get stagnant, and then you're like, you're just become like kind of irrelevant so you have to always be like looking at like what's new, what's this, what's that like, not necessarily trends and stuff, but you being yourself.

Speaker 2:

You got to keep evolving and adapting.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but keeping people like interested and engaged, stuff like that. So she just came back and she's doing good, but she was like, you know, I feel like I could have been doing better, she's like, but I she got stuck, so she stopped and kind of people, people like forgot about her I mean, that's just how it is.

Speaker 2:

You're only here for a certain amount of time.

Speaker 1:

If you're not, if you're not maximizing your light, I mean yeah just like you came, you're gonna be gone yeah, and the thing is is that with social media, I feel like there's so much to see, there's so much to scroll. All of that. You are not the one catching people's attention, somebody else is.

Speaker 2:

That's just how it is.

Speaker 1:

So if, like you know, people tell me like, oh, jasmine, like it's, it seems exhausting, like you know, you're telling us because I have a third account where, like, I'm posting like these like tips and tricks and stuff to just kind of like help, like you know, people like grow or things like that, and people always just seem like they don't like the fact that I tell them, like you need to post, you need to post, you need to be consistent, you need to post multiple times a day. Like people don't want that work and that's when they're not going to get no results and I'm like that's.

Speaker 2:

It's because that's when they're not going to get no results.

Speaker 1:

And I'm like that's it's because that's what it is. It's content creating. So you need to create content. If you're not doing that, like can you imagine how many hours a day people have their phone in their hand? And if you're not the one popping up, somebody else is? And somebody else is going to take your spot. People get bored so fast, so again, again. You need to be keeping them entertained, bringing out new stuff like just like a relationship yeah if you're not giving that chick attention yeah the other dude is exactly.

Speaker 1:

Or like you're saying, like with the football, you kind of like you know. You're saying like you might like not even be able to train because you have you've been out of the game like for so long, so you need to keep this going.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 1:

Yeah. So Whatever it is that you like, whatever you think is your dream, you need to be consistent be consistent.

Speaker 2:

Don't think like, oh, you learned it, or oh you know you went viral, or oh you know you made the team, or whatever it's like you got to keep working hard there and it's not even that's not the easiest part, but like, once you make it, it's about retaining it, keeping the that championship quality material. It's like when a team wins the super bowl, like if they're in the super bowl the next year, like they obviously did, like the right things to keep, because a lot of teams win the super bowl and they all kind of like go back to being like yeah in between because they don't make, like the right necessary, like obviously you had the best team, so a lot of teams start trading players or they do this or that.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Versus teams like kind of like the Chiefs. They kind of just keep adding good players, like to fill in other roles. So it's like you got to keep doing that, adapting and just not only being consistent, but adapting. Whatever your flaws are, work on them.

Speaker 1:

Since we're in like the football topic, why do you think the Cardinals, because that's like our team obviously like. Why do you think we're just not like? We're just not, we're not.

Speaker 2:

I think just bad decision making over years and just bad decision making like from the players or like the players that they're choosing everything from the top down like just bad decision. That bad-making on quarterbacks picks all kinds of stuff and then you just find yourself in a big old ball of mess and then it's like who's going to save us?

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Because you look at the last time. The last time the Cardinals did good were with Carson Palmer.

Speaker 1:

When was that? That was like 2015.

Speaker 2:

We went deep into the playoffs and we still, like, had a lot of flaws. We got exposed by the Panthers Panthers, you go back to when Kurt Warner came in. We literally lost the Super Bowl in the last play of the game. Like Arizona teams have such, I don't know. It's cursed. It's tough to be a fan here. I'm not joking.

Speaker 1:

Honestly, like I'm not, I couldn't, like I couldn't answer a question about like a play or something like that, because I know nothing. Like I just sit there and you know, kind of just I'm there for the snacks, okay guys, but I just feel like it's so hard to be an Arizona fan, like year after year, it's just like freaking disappointment.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, you're just like gosh.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's hard, it's tough.

Speaker 2:

So it's like but I mean, you got to keep supporting them, I guess.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it is what it is.

Speaker 2:

But yeah, so during like fall, I feel like not only does the weather change too, but like the sports start, Everybody's birthdays start. Like this time of year for us guys is like crazy, because her birthday, my birthday, my mom's birthday, so my birthday.

Speaker 1:

Just passed Just birthday, so my birthday just passed, just passed. Two days ago. Two days ago, yours is next week, your mom's is two days later, your dad's is a month later, yo, lily's. And then we have our boy that is turning 15, and we're going to Hawaii. I can't wait for that. That's literally like the highlight of my year. I cannot wait to be in Hawaii for a week, and literally like it's like Christmas Thanksgiving or what is it? Halloween Thanksgiving.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, Halloween Thanksgiving.

Speaker 1:

Literally like once my birthday hits it's like every two weeks. Something is happening. Something is happening and we just can't like we don't stop and you sprinkle sports on top we. Something is happening and we just can't, and you sprinkle sports on top. We're busy and you sprinkle him sitting on the couch, especially if I'm working overtime.

Speaker 2:

If I'm working 10 hours a day, I'm going home and I'm chilling. Yeah, I'm locking in with the.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

So dang, and I think I feel like we usually get busy kind of during this time of year. Yeah, like after Septemberember we start working overtime not only you guys.

Speaker 1:

I feel like me too. I have to work really hard, like with all my affiliate stuff, like for black friday and like right before christmas, like it gets crazy.

Speaker 1:

Like if I'm not posting 20 times a day, like you know, like we're saying if you're not the one popping up with that product, somebody else is so literally like I can't, I can't just sit on my butt like, starting now, it's like all, like right now we're doing labor day sales, and then it's like fall products and all of this stuff and it literally doesn't stop until it gets like super crazy for christmas and then finally we see, like you know, we see it come down, but I feel like for everybody it just it. It gets crazy. I do love the fall though. I am so sick of this heat.

Speaker 2:

Hopefully next year we're in Montana.

Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, okay. So out of nowhere, we just like spontaneously, were like let's go to Montana for our family family vacation next year. So that'll be it that's gonna be cool um, if you live in montana or if you've been to montana, put it in the comments, like what do we need to see what? Where do we need to go all of that? What is the best month to go?

Speaker 2:

we're thinking june, but let us know so I am so thirsty today I know right, at least you're drinking water, though I know my water intake has been on point um what else?

Speaker 1:

we didn't plan this episode like at all. We were just like, okay, well, it's fall, it's football. Like we have a lot of shit going on, let's go talk about it Pretty much huh. Yeah.

Speaker 2:

It's just crazy, too, when school starts there's so much going on.

Speaker 1:

Can we talk about how much I hate the school drop-off and pick-up?

Speaker 2:

It makes me sick to my stomach.

Speaker 1:

So inefficient, huh? Like it is so, like people are so inconsiderate, like I mean we do have like the dumbest drivers, so you know it's so bad. Like it's just, I don't like it. Ernesto bought the kids bikes. Today was their first day riding bikes to school. Because that is how bad.

Speaker 2:

I don't like the pickup line I mean, I feel like as when we were kids, we were oh, you're excited to ride your bike to school.

Speaker 1:

Now it's like like I have to ride my bike to school I'm like waking up excited first of all, I had a walk To and from school. Okay, so I didn't even have. I didn't even have a bike. I didn't even know how to ride a bike. I still don't know how to ride a bike. Can I get a bike?

Speaker 2:

you need one, not like that, but like you need to learn. How do you not? Who doesn't?

Speaker 1:

know, I don't know how to ride a bike. I've never had a bike before yeah, you need cries and daddy issues?

Speaker 2:

I never had a dad bike. I feel like I feel like you'll be more happier.

Speaker 1:

Bikes are fun what if I get a bike for the fall? You guys, if I come to the next episode with like scraped knees and elbows, I got a bike.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I think y'all like having a bike. It's really fun.

Speaker 1:

Well, I have to learn how to ride it. Ride a bike.

Speaker 2:

I mean it's not that hard, you just pedal Pedal and go straight To the middle. Okay, that'll be fun.

Speaker 1:

Where do you even go? Where do you buy the boys' bikes? At Dick's Sporting Goods, dick's.

Speaker 2:

Sporting.

Speaker 1:

Goods when can we buy me a bike?

Speaker 2:

Walmart, can we go?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, we can go after this Okay.

Speaker 2:

What are you going to get? Like a beach cruiser?

Speaker 1:

I don't know, or a mountain bike.

Speaker 2:

You want a mountain bike.

Speaker 1:

I can't get on that. I'm 5'2".

Speaker 2:

I can't get on a mountain bike. Why not? You could be switching gears. You're like ching, ching, ching.

Speaker 1:

I don't think I can get on a mountain bike.

Speaker 2:

I think you should get a beach cruiser.

Speaker 1:

Okay, I'll do that.

Speaker 2:

I'm excited With the basket. You can put the dog in the front.

Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, I can put Lily in the front.

Speaker 2:

We'll just be all mobbing it. Get the little wagon for John.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

We'll be pushing, or I could drive the quad.

Speaker 1:

No, that's exciting. I want to get a bike.

Speaker 2:

That'll be fun actually.

Speaker 1:

And I have to learn how to ride it.

Speaker 2:

It's not that hard.

Speaker 1:

I don't have balance, so that's the only thing I'm worried about that's true, we might have to put training wheels.

Speaker 2:

I remember when I was little and they first took them off, man, I felt hard. Yeah, on the side of my house they're like we're going to the park. Yeah, I started going and I just forgot about the training wheels. Boop fell right over. But then I learned how to use it after, because you don't want to fall after that.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, no, you're just like doing too much all the time, like when you guys went hunting and Kevin was pulling you on your bike. No, that's not even like. That's not safe. You guys should have recorded that. That would have been like a cool video A little bit more, though.

Speaker 2:

huh, yeah, like it would have been like a cool video.

Speaker 1:
