It Begins With You

From: Rebeca (Final Year Filmmaking Student)

How can you make friends and feel confident at university? Check out this advice from Rebeca, a Filmmaking student at Manchester Met.

My name is Rebeca Rodriguez, and I did a Masters in Filmmaking.

One of the things that I would definitely advise is just don't be afraid to make mistakes because this is your time to be able to explore and, like, see what goes best for what you want in the future. So making sure to rely on your tutors and your friends and, like, on the people around you outside of university as well was really nice.

But yeah, don't be afraid to try new things and fail at them because success comes from failure. Don't be afraid to ask, because sometimes you get a lot of things by asking.

Sometimes you think you're communicating in the best way, or people around you understand what you are aiming to do, but sometimes you just have to be a little bit clearer and understand that, understand that people have like different ways of receiving those messages.

When the course started at the beginning, like everybody was so scared because nobody was going now or anything. Like, we just went into the classes and then go home.

But I think it was like the week after the first one where everybody sat at Sal's, at The Salutation, because it is next to SODA, which is my building. And there was like this whole row of the amazing Photography, Filmmaking, Art Design, Sound Design. And so everybody just started talking. And then from then that's how like the group got created.

So I think it's nice just to like, maybe push a little bit people to be like, oh, there's just go out for one time and then through, then you can create lots of great friendships.
