Welcome to Haunted Ozark Theater. H. O. T. Your Hot Horror Podcast. And today we're going to be talking about horror masks.
SPEAKER_01My favorite.
SPEAKER_00And just in general, the look of a good villain.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and the mask can really make or break it, can't be a cannibal.
SPEAKER_00100% it can. I want to uh do something a little different. I want to do a couple of shout-outs. Last week, uh, for our This Day in Horror History, we talked about Keith David it being his birthday.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00On his birthday last week, while we were talking about him, he was getting his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
SPEAKER_01Oh, he deserves it.
SPEAKER_00It's about time. Yep. So I wanted to shout that out. Another shout-out I want to give is uh your boy Tyler Main has cancer.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, breast cancer. That's uh that's what I was gonna talk about too. So if you pray, pray for him, please, or have him in your thoughts. He is from what I've always heard, just one of the best dudes in the industry. And uh one of my favorite Michael Myers. But um, I'm my heart goes out to him, and he'll beat it.
SPEAKER_00I think he will too, because he's a tough cookie. And uh yeah, if if you're the praying type, send one up for for Tyler Main. The other thing I wanted to say is uh if you all remember a while back we did an episode on cryptids, and I discovered that Arkansas has a third cryptid that I was unaware of. Is it devil what it um something boy? Uh this is I saw a video today from a little town called Snowball, Arkansas, which is up near Dog Patch. I remember Dog Patch. And uh there was a there was a whole thing in the uh local paper about a creature that they called the Gow Rao.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's not what I heard. Okay, what is the Gow Row?
SPEAKER_00The Gow Rao is like a reptilian, like 20-foot long, horned, creepy, crawly kind of a monster. And uh there's a newspaper article from the turn of the century, like 1900, of them uh banding together, tracking this tracking this thing down, shooting it. No pictures though, no, because they they shot it, quote unquote, but then they didn't catch it.
SPEAKER_01It kind of reminds me when we had that episode we talked about frogmade, yeah, and that turned out to be a huge um iguana with no tail.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, uh so but yeah, this just another crypt, another cryptid I came across, the Gow Rao. That's pretty cool. Yeah. Uh but for this week's today in horror history, it is the birthday of Miss Adrian Barbeau. Adrian Barbeau refresh my mind. She was in the fog. She was in Creep Show. Yes, and she was even married to John Carpenter.
SPEAKER_01Yes. She is she's a great actress because she can play real lovable, and but like in the Creep Show one, she's a horrible type. Terrible in Creep Show. And in the fog, yeah, she's the DJ. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Very good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Adrian Barbo's birthday. She's awesome, man. Yes, sir. She's awesome. Yes, sir. Uh, you said you wanted to throw some stuff out there. What do you got?
SPEAKER_01I I don't know why this came to mind. This I wasn't gonna talk about this. Someone I want to mention who is so underrated, it's kind of like a John Lithgow in range, but his horror, he started in horror Frida 13th, it's Kevin Bacon, dude. Yeah, how he he's one of the only actors who can play you absolutely love him. And the next movie he is scary. And it reminds me a lot of John Lithgow, how they just not too many actors, either they're always the bad guy or they're always lovable. But like Kevin Bacon, dude, he's great in horror movies. Yeah, uh, and I've just thought of him because I saw Tremors that wasn't my re-watch, but that is an awesome movie, and he's so fun in that.
SPEAKER_00And there's a couple of movies where he plays the villain, and and you kind of hate his guts.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, a lot of movies he's the villain, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But then he's you know, Mr. Nice Guy in all these other movies, and yeah, you're right, he can go both ways.
SPEAKER_01Oh okay. So you want to talk about rewatchers? I'm sorry, is that you?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, I um I uh once again did not re-watch anything. I have been just I've been really trying to stay on top of my 2026 list. So uh I rented uh Return to Silent Hill, and the less I say about it, the better.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's what I've done.
SPEAKER_00That's all I'm gonna, I'm just gonna leave it at that. Um, but I did go to the theater and see Scary Movie Six. And and it was the best of the bunch, in my opinion. I thought it was the funniest of the six. I thought they came back with a vengeance. I thought it was definitely worth seeing in the theater. The whole theater was packed, the whole theater was laughing. Good time by good time had by everybody. So that just tells me one thing sequels more, right? I what I've heard since I went to the theater and seen it, what I've heard like online is they're already talking scary movie seven, they're already talking white chicks too. Oh I mean, they're push, they're like pushing the wayans back into the spotlight. So we'll see, we'll see. But um, it was it was really, really good, really fun, really funny, and um they all bombed as far as the critical reviews go. Oh, don't they always every single scary movie has is like under 30%. So don't don't listen to the critics, as per usual. Yeah, um, just go see it and have a ball because it was it was laugh out loud, funny for sure. I loved it.
SPEAKER_01Have a good time with it, is what you're saying. Don't get too caught up in it. Absolutely. Okay, awesome.
SPEAKER_00What have you been re-watching?
SPEAKER_01Uh you're gonna like this. So my first one I've rewatched, and we go back and forth on this movie, but so Silence of the Lamps. Yeah. Horror or psychological thrill?
SPEAKER_00Well, I mean, it's got horror elements for sure. I would say overall, I would put it in like the crime, thriller, drama category, but it can be scary and it can certainly be creepy.
SPEAKER_01And I was just I was watching it and it's got the mask. We're talking, you know, yeah, and that's very, I mean, you see that halfway mask covering the face.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the Hannibal mask is it's so simple, but I think I think that we always forget about it because of its simplicity. But yeah, it's super effective, super creepy. Um, definitely deserves at least honorable mention, you know, as a as a as a horror mask that is up there, you know, uh in importance. Um but yeah, I mean it it also gets a special shout out for you know, anytime something, even horror adjacent, wins Academy Award, we claim it.
unknownAbsolutely.
SPEAKER_01We're like, oh yeah, that's horror, that's one of ours. And the next thing I watched, uh I don't know if you have Shudder, but if you're a whole fame, you have Shudder. Uh I was watching old episodes of Tales from the Crypt, and one caught my attention. Now I have not seen Obsession, but from everything I've seen, what I've been told, there is an episode, season three, episode one, it's called Love to Death.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01And I think it, if you watch it, you're gonna be like, wow, that's obsession. Um, so it's about this guy who lives in a uh apartment complex, and it's like this big Hollywood star lady, and he's in love with her, but she won't have the time of day for him and all this. It's kind of creepy because that he finds out the landlord has all these cameras around, and he's noticed that this guy's in love with her, infatuated with her, and he gives him a love potion, and he's like, give him get her to drink it, and she's gonna love him. And it goes downhill real quick after that. So you gotta show her watch that it's season three, episode one, and I would love for you to go, wow, that's the similarities are pretty uncanny.
SPEAKER_00Okay. All right, cool.
SPEAKER_01Love me some Tales from the Crypt.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, oh yeah. That was uh the main reason why we had HBO as a kid. Yeah, like my dad, you know, back then it was like you picked one. You had HBO, Cinemax, or you had Showtime, or you had Cinemax. You didn't have all three of them unless you were like Daddy War Books, but um, yeah, my dad picked HBO out of the three because Tales from the Crib. Nice, yeah, for sure. The more I hear about your dad, the more lucky one. Yeah, you would you guys would have got along for sure. For sure. Anything else before we dive into the main topic? Dude, let's get into the nitty-gritty. I've been looking forward to this one. All right. Well, I'm gonna really let you take the lead here because this is your area of expertise. Cody, as we mentioned before, has a collection of over 50 horror masks. It's his main item that he collects, it's his love and passion. And today we're gonna talk about it in depth. In depth the great masks and great looks that horror has given us over the years.
SPEAKER_01The first I want to start off with the the um holy trinity of horror, the three. Yeah, you know, the leather face masks, Mikey and Jason. Yes, sir, and how much that makes those characters, yeah, and really get into it and how symbolic they are, what they mean to the franchise. And I was really trying to wrap my brain and think of a different universe. Where would these movies be if somebody wouldn't have said, let's try this mask, let's try this look, and would we have these franchises? And that's a big that I mean, a good possibility. We don't, because I Paul, and I know you have have seen some really good horror movies, but you go, the killer looked horrible. Yeah, that mask is just not and or he'd look nondescript, yes, or whatever.
SPEAKER_00It just doesn't, you gotta be memorable, right? Yeah. So what do you think? I totally agree. I was thinking a lot about the leatherface mask. So let's talk first and foremost about that. Um I think that it's a great mask, but I think that it's maybe overshadowed by the chainsaw itself. I think if you're because you're a mask guy and we're both hardcore horror guys, but I bet you if you're a casual horror person, the first thing you think of when you think of Chainsaw, Texas Chainsaw Mask is the chainsaw. So maybe the mask is secondary to that, but if you really pay attention to the mask, it's it's pretty incredible because not only is it you know, these um Ed Geen styled, skinned and stitched together homemade masks, um, he wears different masks and his personality changes depending on which mask.
SPEAKER_01That's exactly what I say. And that's what separates him from the others because he changes his mask for his personality that day. Yes the butcher mask, he's off kill him, he's provided for the family. Uh when it's pretty lady, he's um doing things around the house, or the old lady he's when it was the old lady, yeah, he's got the apron on, and they're kind of like kicking him in the pants.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. So I thought that was very I don't you don't see that with any other ones. And I I never caught that as a kid. I don't know if you did, but no, as a kid I didn't.
SPEAKER_00It wasn't until later on that I was.
SPEAKER_01And that's how he's showing his emotions is through those masks. And that's just that got to me. And I don't think he would kill without a mask on. I I was trying to think about that. It's kind of like with Michael Myers in Rob Zombies, at least the remake. You never see Mikey kill without that mask. Now, when he's a little boy, his first kill, he's beating the bully, he's got the clown mask on, and then for a second, he takes it off. And you want what's going through his mind? Is he getting sympathetic? And maybe if he's feeling something, the mask goes back on and he proceeds to to bead this kid to death. But he doesn't kill anybody in that movie without putting his mask on. Yeah. And that says a lot. But with Leatherface, I mean, would he kill without a mask? Is this I mean, is that just how he emotes is all his emotions as well?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, I I wonder, like, um, what's the one that shows him as a kid and he gets shot in the mouth and his mom has to like sew his mouth back up? That's just Leatherface. Okay, right. Part three. Is that what that is?
SPEAKER_01Or the new one. When he's a kid and it they go on that cop chase, right?
SPEAKER_00Because there's two called Leatherface. There's Leatherface, Texas Chainsaw Part Three. Right. And then there's Leatherface, which is like the latest, or not latest, but that was like 2017. That's that one. Okay. That's the one where he's okay. So he's the kid. That one got me thinking that maybe he can't even talk anymore. Maybe he can't speak at all because of him getting shot in the side of the face. Right. And his mom has to uh, you know, she we they show her stitching him up, and then they put that almost kind of a Hannibal Lecter kind of mask on him so he can heal up. But I thought the same thing. I thought maybe he lost his ability to speak, and like you just said, this is how he communicates, this is how he emotes, is through the different masks. Right. And also in I think it was the beginning, um 08, something like that.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it came out in 06.
SPEAKER_0006, okay. Um, he actually makes a mask and puts it on, and he actually sews it to his own face, which I thought that was a cool detail. So it's not just he's not just um making them and then sliding them on. He's actually they're actually part of him, dude, and in a way.
SPEAKER_01And one of the the gnarliest ones is the uh the remake, the 03, it's the Kemper face. Yes, and uh Eric Belfour sees her boy in in the theater. We were watching that, and you can hear people, oh my god, it was incredible. And I've seen fan-made masks of the Kemper mask. Oh, dude, they're crazy. I would love to have one of those.
SPEAKER_00That's cool because it they did a good job making it look just like the actor Eric Balfour, but it's Leatherface's eyes coming through the mask. Um, yeah, he he takes it off of him right in front of her, and then he turns to the camera.
SPEAKER_01Now, is he wanting to be pretty? Honestly, is he wanting to just catch her attention in a way?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I don't know. See, that's the thing is if he doesn't speak and he's emoting through the masks, it's very open to interpretation, right? And that's I think that's part of the genius of it, is now it's got us talking about it. Right. You can we can sit here, we could have a whole episode on just you know uh Leatherface and his psychology and you know how he goes about his business.
SPEAKER_01And I did a little back search, and from what I could tell, the out of horror at least, and um the the very first mask I could find was the Phantom of the Opera, and how much that really concealed his two sides. Yeah, and all these monsters have two sides, don't they? Yeah, I'd say and they are very different when they put on the mask. Yeah, they are and that's so I don't know, I find that really interesting. There's a lot to deep dive in the psychology of it, yeah, because as humans, I we all wear masks one way or another, every day around people at work, and that's they're putting on their mask and doing what they gotta do to survive it in a sense.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, I agree, and but horror just takes it a little more literal, right? And but I I would imagine that there are people out there who really um do have issues communicating unless they, you know, so to speak, put that mask on.
SPEAKER_01And that people give me crap about Rob Zombie's Halloween, but when he's a little boy and he he's really drawing into himself, and he those masks, he's like he he transforms, and his mom comes, please take off the mask. And he you could really see him, he's getting darker and darker, and those masks, I think he's really getting lost in it in that I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, a whole nother being. Let's shift over to Michael on that segue. But real quick, just a little bit of trivia for you. How many different masks do we see leatherface wear across nine movies? Oh wow.
SPEAKER_01Well, in the first one, you got three, the second one's only one. Three's two? Doesn't he have two different ones? The new generation, it's just one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. If you had to add them all together, I'm gonna say 13. 15. 15. You're pretty close, pretty close. He wears 15 different masks across nine films. So just a little trivia.
SPEAKER_01All right. Well, I'm I'm sorry to interrupt you. No, I think I in um you you just you talked about sewing. So in the Texas Chainsaw 3D, there's a scene where he's sewing it through his cheeks.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Is that the one you're talking about? Yeah, that's not Texas. That was 3D. Yeah, okay. I could think of 2013. I couldn't remember if that was 3D or beginning.
SPEAKER_01Where that, yeah, leatherface, they're cousins.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01And she inherits the house. Yeah, that was 3D. Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_00Yes, that's the one I'm thinking of. But I thought for some reason I was in my mind that was beginning. But um, okay, so let's talk about Mikey. Real quick, um, I'll throw out a few more little bits of trivia here. And I'm sure you know a lot of these. Um, production designer Tommy Lee Wallace is the one who went down to a costume shop on Hollywood Boulevard. And do you know how much he paid for the Captain Kirk mask? It's really cheap. Dollar ninety-eight. Yeah. He brings back a Captain Kirk mask, he cuts the eye holes a little wider, and he paints the flesh of the mask white and presents it to the big boss, and he says, Let's do it, let's roll with it.
SPEAKER_01And I'm I'm sure you know this too, Paul. But for the people who may not know, there were two options. Because John Carpenter, he wanted there was a clown mask. And it was gonna be a clown mask, and they said, Well, let's test it against something. And that's when he went down there. Tommy bought that. And from all the interviews, because I watched a lot of interviews about that mask when they put on the Michael mask. People were just like, That's it. Yeah, that's it. Uh out of all the masks I love, there's something about that the original Michael Myers mask. I you can't put your finger on it, but it's beautiful, it's haunting, it's disturbing. It's got so many emotions in different lighting, yeah. How it can look, but it never changes. That's what's incredible.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes. It's it's spectral in that way, that it looks different from every angle, it looks different from different lighting, but it's never different, it's always the same.
SPEAKER_01And that's why I wanted to really search this out. What kind of Halloween movie we're getting? If Michael Myers is walking around in a clown mask, we're not getting this.
SPEAKER_00Right. We're not getting this.
SPEAKER_01We probably would have been one and done.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, probably would have been.
SPEAKER_01Is that not nuts? Yeah, yeah. To think how much that mass. Because some guy went, hey, William Shatner, I can change this up. It's it's brilliant.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Is it destiny? Is it I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I mean maybe to some extent. I mean, yeah.
SPEAKER_01If that dude has never got an award or Nobel Peace Prize or something, get it to me. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Nobel Peace Prize for costume design or mask design. But no, I totally agree. It's it's um it's almost unexplainable. It's you almost can't quantify it.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00And it's serendipitous for sure. Um, is it a touch of fate? Quite possibly.
SPEAKER_01But now saying all that, I'm gonna say this because of all my whore slashers, and God knows I love them. Mikey is the one I scratched my head up the most because for some reason people think that part two, uh 82, 81, is a different mask. It's not.
SPEAKER_00She kept it the exact same mask.
SPEAKER_01She kept it under her bed, she smoked and aged it in uh Andy Warlock. Andy, is it? Yeah, uh, his face was wider than Nick Castle's and it stretched it out. But after that, every different movie was a different mask. And oh man, part four, I do not like part five. I do not like cursing Michael Myers' mask. I love yeah, H2O, I do not like. I do like David Gordon Green's, the newer ones. I thought those were really done good. And I love Rob Somny's mask. But man, that it's just another example of how part four could possibly be one of my favorites if the mask looked good. And I that's a lot of people's complaint about that.
SPEAKER_00I gotcha, I gotcha. I do love the the David Gordon Green look of the mask in the trilogy, how it wears its bowel damage and it kind of deteriorates throughout the trilogy. Like that's that's a cool touch. I really do like that, and it gets kind of freakier. Right now, let's talk. About because I know Mikey is your guy, and I know that Rob Zombie's Mikey is your guy. Let's talk about um Mikey with the longer hair.
SPEAKER_01I love it. Yeah, I think it fits so good with that. And I'm gonna go one step further and talk about his beard. Okay. Some part two, the 2009 when it's coming out under the mask, he just looks badass. Yeah, and people go, Well, Michael. It it bugs me because people want something different. Rob gave it to you. Yeah, it's something completely different. And I'm gonna tell you, people, if you're a hobo and you live out in the woods, your hair's growing, you're gonna have a beard, and that mask is gonna deteriorate like that. That's just logic that's gonna happen. And I thought you nailed it in the mask, the hair, the look, and one and two. How he hide he's got the original mask when he's little, and then he hides it and he comes back and rips open the floorboard and puts it on, and it's got the Rob Zombie look to it. That's the Rob Zombie all right, and it's just man, it's badass. And you see the long hair coming out from the back.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It makes all the sense in the world. Yes, sir. But the thing is, is people don't always want to make sense.
SPEAKER_01Don't ask Rob Zombie to do your movie, I guess.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. They want the shape to be the shape, and they want, you know, him to be supernaturally preserved, I guess. I don't I don't know.
SPEAKER_01You can't win over everybody.
SPEAKER_00You can't, and and that goes back to you know what we were saying about scary movie. Go have fun with it. Right. That's all that's that's our motto, you know, across the board. Yeah. Take it for what it is and enjoy it. Enjoy that we got it, enjoy that somebody, you know, put forth the effort.
SPEAKER_01And it's not easy making movies, guys.
SPEAKER_00And here uh I'll say, you know, like um I just mentioned that I watched Return to Silent Hill and and um, you know, it's getting it's getting bashed pretty bad by the critics, and uh I'm just gonna leave it at that. But hey, you want to talk about a great mask? Pyramid Head.
SPEAKER_01Man, he's in there, dude.
SPEAKER_00You know, Pyramid Head. What why is that scary? It it's I don't know why, but it's terrifying.
SPEAKER_01But it's terrifying.
SPEAKER_00You see that big muscular dude, and all there is is the mask. He has like shorts on or some ripped up pants.
SPEAKER_01That long apron.
SPEAKER_00I think he's just bare chested.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but he's on uh the waist, he's got an apron. Okay, is that what it is?
SPEAKER_00Yep. Okay, but I mean that's huge cleaver.
SPEAKER_01But that's really all it is, is is that mask is the mask. And is it a mask or is that his head there?
SPEAKER_00And it's it's not um, I don't know, a pyramid by itself is not necessarily terrifying. If you put it on a human body, though, it does. It does, it does. All right, so let's move on then to uh Jason. Let's go to Jason. Now, Jason is my personal favorite mask.
SPEAKER_01Just overall, because overall have a now. Jason is awesome because they have really stayed in line with how the mask after four he gets the X, or I'm sorry, at the end of three, he gets the X and that. Yeah, and after every one of those until the remake, it's got the slid knife. I always loved it. I always loved that.
SPEAKER_00Yep. I I agree. Um and the masks do have noticeable variations from movie to movie, but they do try to have some continuity. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01And I love them for it.
SPEAKER_00I do too. I do too. Um I think part three, you know, the original hockey mask, the OG hockey mask. That's my favorite is my favorite. Um as a kid, I just to me the Jason hockey mask is the symbol of horror.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, yeah.
SPEAKER_00To me. Like when I think if I had to like give the entire genre of horror an icon, you know, or if you're scrolling through Netflix and they each little category had a little icon, I would put the hockey mask because you know it, it's universal.
SPEAKER_01It is, it's universal, and it's by chance we got that hockey mask if you know how that came along, but you wouldn't tell them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so Martin Sadoff.
SPEAKER_01I love this story.
SPEAKER_00He was a hockey fan.
SPEAKER_01Red Wings.
SPEAKER_00They needed a mask. He brought out a 1950s Detroit Red Wings goaltender mask, and it was too small for the actor. So it was modified by Doug White, who was handling the props. Um, he made it, he he took the the the mold and I guess just kind of blew it up to make it bigger to fit the actor. And um here's a few little tidbits about the mask itself. It has uh five snaps on it, but only three straps. Right. So it's and the strap has to be shown on the front of the mask. When you go to like spirit, sometimes you'll see the back of the snap on the front, and you'll see the strap itself on the inside of the mask. But but the straps actually come over the mask and are visible from the outside. Right. So you gotta have five snaps, you gotta have three straps, and the straps gotta be on the outside.
SPEAKER_01How many holes? Thirty holes. There you go. And people that I'm not to interrupt you, then the little uh vignette that came out last summer, yeah, and they revamped Craig Nicotero made that mess. People were not happy it did not have the correct holes. That's just how much people get into this, dude.
SPEAKER_00That is uh you're talking about uh sweet revenge, yes. Um 30 holes plus the eye holes and one nostril hole. Yeah, and the chevrons, not two nostril holes, just one nostril hole. And yes, three chevrons. Um usually red, sometimes like blue.
SPEAKER_01Uh only in the new beginning, which I love. I've got it right there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So Roy Burns mask.
SPEAKER_00And um donated in part three, as we mentioned, by the character Shelley, played by Larry Zerner.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and they found him on the corner. He was uh handing out flyers to the movies, and they're like, hey, you look like you'd be a good victim. Do you want to be in our movies? Really? Yep, that's how they found him. I didn't know that. Yep, that's cool. He's a lawyer now, and he's still huge. He's promoting, he's always been an advocate for Friday 13th, part three.
SPEAKER_00So we could, you know, be at a con and say, you know, hey, you guys want to be in a horror movie? Could. And then next thing you know, I'm giving Jason his iconic mask, you know, after I die off screen.
SPEAKER_01Dude, I'm I'm seeing, and for the life of me, I can't, because me as a kid, I've just remember the mask. Yeah. So if I I could only imagine being at an age where I was a huge fight, because you don't see Jason till the end as a little boy. Yeah. Part two, it's the sackhead. Yeah. But make to be watching part three in 3D when that movie came out, I believe in '82, and just being in the big screen and be like, that honky mask.
SPEAKER_00And that makes Jason. It does. It does. I was not old enough to experience that one in the theater. Um, but I do remember watching that one on VHS quite a bit because, like you said, that's that's the debut of you know, the most infamous. Let's just say it. Yeah. But I do love Sackhead Jason. We've talked about it. I love him in the remake. Sackhead is a totally underrated look. Yeah. And we even thought that Sackhead Jason maybe even borrowed something from the fan of killer, which made my list. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So uh yeah, really, really good stuff. Um and those are your faces. And I mean, you got Freddie, not a mask. It is in a sense.
SPEAKER_00Well, I want to talk about Freddie at the end because he's he's not a mask. I put him like what the creeper. Okay. Magic. But to me, and we'll get into this at the end, but to me, he's my favorite look.
SPEAKER_02Really?
SPEAKER_00Freddie is my favorite overall look for a villain. And we'll like I said, we'll talk about that at the end. I want to save that. Um how about Pinhead?
SPEAKER_01Never one of my favorites. I just something about him was disturbing to me. I hate needles, and it really but it still bugs me. Well, then it's doing its job. It is. It I yeah, I love um, I love the character, but the mask never I had a chance to get a couple of them. I wish I would have now. Yeah. And I'll have to in the future, but it just something about it really rubs. Now that's saying a lot because I love Leatherface. Yeah. Right. Someone's face. And like this mask over here, if you look, it's got lips on the side of it because he liked the look of that. But uh no, the it just the cinnabites always mess with me, man. That whole franchise mess with my brain. What do you think about it? You put it in top?
SPEAKER_00Oh well, I don't know, again, I don't know if that's a mask. I think that's more of a makeup. You can buy the mask. Yeah, but I mean, when they put that on Doug Bradley, I don't think they put a mask on him.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no. It's the prosthetics and the makeup.
SPEAKER_00What how long that took? But um, it's just a good look. It is a good look. It's a good look.
SPEAKER_01It does its job. You said it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, if it's if it's freaking you out, then it's doing its job.
SPEAKER_01Do you have a mask that freaks you out the most where you're just like, that's I don't like looking at that.
SPEAKER_00Um that make a list for you Well, I would say one of my favorite, I it doesn't like freak me out, but I think one of the ones that really like disarms you and unnerves you is Motel Hell. Oh pig?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yes. I love that you ain't got a motel.
SPEAKER_00That is a cool, that's a very freaky look. Yes, sir. That is one of my if we're talking strictly masks, that's one of my favorites.
SPEAKER_01That's very good, dude. Very underrated. A lot of people don't awesome pig. Is that because you're a California boy? Is that just that happens to go?
SPEAKER_00No, I've just I just remember seeing Motel Hell as a kid and and thinking like that's different and it's freaky, and it's it is it's unlikely.
SPEAKER_01A lot of people try to copy that look too. Some get it, some don't. They used one on uh American Horse Stories season one.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and uh they did good, but yeah, and even uh even one of the Texas chainsaws that there when he's a kid, he puts on the pig head. Yep, he sure does.
SPEAKER_01So mine would have to be Dr. Satan.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01That is House of a Thousand Corps. First time I seen that still, it's just something about it with that mask on that he's wearing the gas mask thing.
SPEAKER_00People are still clamoring for more Dr. Satan.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_00People are like, we didn't get enough of him in Devin's rejects. You really don't. We didn't get any of them in Three From Hell.
SPEAKER_01Now there is a deleted scene where he's in the hospital and he kills uh wrote um, what's her name? Rosanna Dawson. Because she was in it. She well, deleted scene, yeah, and she's the nurse of the doctor.
SPEAKER_00But they want they want, you know, a Dr. Satan film or they want you know, yeah. He's that's a good look. Yeah, that's a good look. Rob's got a knife for that stuff, doesn't he? And again, with the long stringy hair.
SPEAKER_01That really makes it, don't it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I made a list here of uh six underrated. If you want to hear about you with green, if you know him.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01Of course, the first one I'm gonna talk about is my my boy over here who does not get enough love, and that is Babyface from the Hills Run Red. That mask makes that killer. And uh he he's badass, dude. Look at that. Yeah, you don't want to see him in the middle of the night, you don't want to see him in the middle of the day.
SPEAKER_00It's a little bit leather face, but with the added um creepiness of being a kid, a little kid's face.
SPEAKER_01And he sews that on him. He actually cuts off his face in the beginning when he's a boy to become the character. I always thought that was pretty metal.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, it's that's kind of like uh like the joker in some of the newer comics where he cuts off his own face and then puts it back on as a mask. Oh the joker, huh?
SPEAKER_01Um we talked about this movie not too long ago, but Dr. Decker.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Uh uh Nightgreen. Yeah. Yes. Good. Yes.
SPEAKER_01You like that? Oh, yeah, that's a good look. Okay. That's a really good look. No one ever talks about it. One movie we've never talked about, Lady Rust, Chrome Skull.
SPEAKER_00Have you seen it? I've seen it once a while back, and I know exactly what you're talking about. But yeah, that's that's certainly flies onto the radar, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_01100%. No one talks about that. You don't see a lot of it. Number four, that's a movie we've never talked about, and I I have I'm gonna have this mask before I die because it's so cool. And that stage fright, the owl mask. Oh, okay. We never talked about that. No one talks about it. Love that one. Yeah. Uh, number five is Curtains, the Hag Mask. Curtains is a crazy movie. We couldn't talk about mask without talking about the Hag Mask.
SPEAKER_00If y'all haven't seen curtains, watch it, please. It is gonna be one of the weirdest things that you've ever seen in your life, and it is creepy and amazing, and it's Canadian in the best way. I like that. Very good. It is, I mean, it's a Canadian production, but it oozes Canadian all over itself. Yeah, I mean very good word. I like that Canadian. It's a it's a weird, creepy, awesome movie. I love that. Don't sleep on curtains. Yeah, that's a great map. When she's uh skating on the frozen pond, and you see that mask coming at you. What the hell? That's the best.
SPEAKER_01That's what we live for is horror fans. That's good. And number six was a tie with the collector. Oh, it's mask with the executioner mask from the series The Slasher, season one. I love that full blackhooded look of the executioner.
SPEAKER_00Go see the collector and go watch the collection.
SPEAKER_01They're making another one. Are they? Yep. Found that out last week.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's a good look.
SPEAKER_00Yep. That's a very minimalist look, but it doesn't show dark and creepy. Yeah. Dark and creepy. You got any of that identity? Um, I got some here. Uh you and I were just talking about this as we were setting up. How about the miner from my bloody balantine? Absolutely. That's a cool look. If you saw if you were down in a mine and you saw that thing, Harry Warden. Grab your pants. Yeah. Um very good. I want to give a shout out to the grabber, black phone. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh, those three different things.
SPEAKER_00Well, that's what I was gonna say. I love the grabber because he can configure it into three different looks. He can cover the top of his face so that his the you know, his mouth, mouth, and chin are exposed.
SPEAKER_01He's displaying his feelings in those.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, or he can take the top off and put the bottom on, and now you only see him from like the nose and eyes up, or he can cover the whole face up and totally conceal his eye.
SPEAKER_01So that that's an awesome one. Shout out to Trigger Treat Studios. They have that mask and it's interchangeable and it's cool. It's pretty cheap. Really? That's what it is. Yeah, it is. What is it, like magnets, you think, maybe? I I think they're clips. Just clips together. If you were gonna start, I'd say start with that mask, Paul. Yeah, because you need to.
SPEAKER_00That's a that's a cool look.
SPEAKER_01I love that we need it in the studio.
SPEAKER_00I love that um, you know, like you said, there's three different configurations, and and you know, they they show you all three looks, yeah, you know, throughout the movies, and that's super cool.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it is.
SPEAKER_00I like it. Good pick.
SPEAKER_01I love it.
SPEAKER_00Um, I got I've got to mention because I just saw a scary movie. And so between the scary movie franchise and the scream franchise, we have 13 movies of Ghostface. Wow. And well we why is Ghostface so effective?
SPEAKER_01We've talked about that a little bit, and it's because it's not like Mikey or Jason Leather. Anybody, anybody, your mama, your grandma, your cousin can be under that mask, and they prove that in the movies. It can literally be anyone, and that is very scary in itself.
SPEAKER_00And it means that he can never truly be defeated. Yep, he never does always come back to to come after you. There's no end to the ghost face threat because you know, as long as there's a human being alive, there will be a ghost face. Someone can pick that mask trying to kill Sydney. Yeah. Or Cindy. Sydney, yeah. Sydney or Cindy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I think I'd rather go against that ghost face.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But um, that was another one where they just went down to the costume shop and this was an existing mask. They actually had to purchase the rights to the mask to make it into the movie. And uh, kudos to whoever you know produced the mask for a being cool enough to say, yeah, we'll let you use it, and B, come on. You know that you know, however much money they made prior to that, right? They made a zillion times more after that.
SPEAKER_01Fun fact Wes Craven did not like that mask in the beginning. I know.
SPEAKER_00I've heard the story. Yeah, you've heard that story.
SPEAKER_01Can you tell it? Uh from what I understand, they just showed it in the beginning, like in uh uh shot a couple of shots with it, and he's like, this isn't ever gonna catch on, correct?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, from from what I've read or heard, someone brought it out to use um just for like a lighting test.
SPEAKER_01Well, they had they had the killer, they had the story, but they didn't have a look.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And that was their big and Wes is like, we gotta come up with something, some like you said, put that on for a testament. It's like, no, that ain't gonna do it.
SPEAKER_00Right, right.
SPEAKER_01But he can't be right about everything, I guess.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and and even the greats sometimes get it wrong, you know, and and need somebody else to you know give them a push in the right direction. But yeah, I mean it's um it's become just as iconic almost as the Jasons and the Michaels. Right. And that's that's saying something right there.
SPEAKER_01I dare to ask this question. I know the answer, but can you have Scream? Can you have Friday 13th? Can you have any of these if you took the mask away and said, We're just not gonna put the mask on this one? Or we're gonna change it up. You just go and no.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think if they ever changed it up, I think the public outcry would be because the only one you can really do that with is Leatherface, right?
SPEAKER_01I mean, you can't really Michael, yeah, we changed the mask, but it's the Michael Myers mask in essence, it's not exactly the same. But you know that's Michael Myers. Well, in Leatherface, he like it's can change a lot. You kind of want that. But with the hockey mask, if you got rid of it and said Jason's gonna wear not even a Burlock setup mask, he's gonna wear something completely different. Yeah, I wouldn't want to.
SPEAKER_00What if he just showed his face? Like nobody would love that, you know. I do like that when you go out at Halloween, you see a million variations on the screen face or on the uh ghost face mask. But in the movie, it's always the same. Right. I love that. I love that they don't mess with the movie.
SPEAKER_01This is something kind of deep, I guess. You know, and I know you thought this, I think every kid, and maybe adults too. When I was watching horror movies as a kid, the number one thing I wanted wasn't for people to live or nothing like that. What's under the mask? Yeah, and you died for that reveal. I remember first time watching Halloween and you see Mikey's face for a second when Lori pulls it up, and you're like, oh my gosh, what what a but he's not a monster, really, is he? And just like what Jason pull the hockey mask and we're gonna see what and they did that a lot for us, didn't they? You got to see Jason's grotesque face and the worst he got off on the rest when he's undead, and it's they're so awesome. Even Scream, we're waiting. Who is it? Who's the killer? And that's that's another thing in itself.
SPEAKER_00One of the biggest draws of Scream is the who is you're you're constantly guessing who is under the mask, and you're constantly waiting for that moment where they take the mask off and you get to see who's under the mask. It's it's huge. But even like you said, like even in Jason Takes Manhattan, where you don't see it necessarily, but he shows it to the kids and you see their reaction. Yeah, the radio. You know, it's just moments like that are like you said, are those just too much fun. Those moments of great.
SPEAKER_01It just really, I mean, makes me wonder what we would have if we didn't have those now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I hear you. No, uh, it's it's we've said it before, and it's worth restating. Um it's an essential ingredient. You cannot be a successful franchise without your guy having that the right looking important case or the next big franchise is terrifier.
SPEAKER_01The clown. Yes. For whatever reason. But that he's got the look. He's got that right look that people love.
SPEAKER_00Well, and let's use that as a as an opportunity to talk about the look, not necessarily a mask, because art is makeup, and you know, I think he has a prosthetic nose because it's kind of long and pointy. Um, but it's it's the makeup and it's the little the little tiny top hat on top of his head and the teeth that really bring it all together, you know. So um, yeah, let's talk about uh a look. And yeah, art the clown speaks to people. And I don't know why we've talked about it quite often. How the young folks have really latched on to art. And um well, I think they're thirsty, dude.
SPEAKER_01They want something new. We got Jason, we got we grew up with that, but these kids wouldn't were dying for something new, and here here comes art. I think you're right.
SPEAKER_00I think you know, scream was probably the only thing that they had as young people.
SPEAKER_01We had an abundance of and yeah, and let's just make this clear Scream and Terrify are two different war movies. I'd say Scream is for the general public. You better love horror when you go to watch terrifying.
SPEAKER_00Right. I'm just talking about a look, though. You know, like like the the the scream look, this ghost face look has been around since '96. And from 96 until Terrifier came out, we didn't really have a franchise look.
SPEAKER_01So I'm gonna I and I'm glad you said that because my boy right over here gets underrated. No, he gets slept on, and that's hatching.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I think it's just because they didn't have the I don't know, Victor Crowley. Yeah, dude.
SPEAKER_00That's a look. He's got a great look. Pain hotter, those are great movies. He was it is a franchise.
SPEAKER_01He walked so Art the Clown could run.
SPEAKER_00That's a great way to say it. He did. That's a great way to say it. It is a franchise, and y'all should check it out if you haven't. Some of the best kills, dude. But it should have been way bigger than it is, and I don't think it's too late. I think, you know, um maybe, like you said, maybe art is running because Victor Crowley walked first, but maybe art's popularity could pave the way for a Victor Crowley comeback. I would love it. I would be here for it. I would be totally here for it. Um oh, real quick, I did want to throw out one more in the mask uh uh realm. Okay. And not a particular mask, but a but a franchise that has a lot of masks. Some are really cool and some of them are, you know, kind of throwaway. But the purge. Oh, yeah. Purge again. If you look at the purge franchise, there's a ton of cool masks throughout those movies. Very um creative masks, some are like high-tech, some of them are real simple. Um are goofy, funny, but um maybe like the most masks per movie belongs to the purge franchise. Each movie has dozens of masks that you can choose from. And when you go to Spirit, uh there's you know, they got all kinds of different purge masks for you to pick from.
SPEAKER_01I'm glad you brought that up because that brings me right over to Fear Street. Yeah, you remember the different killers? Yeah, and the different masks. That it's totally the same. I think Purge probably has more because there are quite a bit.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's a good, good point, though.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there's tons. Uh so back to our yeah, he's got he's got the look and it's it's makeup, mostly done with makeup. And um let's talk though about the actor under the makeup. Because you gotta you gotta bring it to life.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um you know, even if you're wearing the mask, you gotta do something to emote through the mask or bring the mask to life. And not just anyone can do that. That's why some of these guys can do that. Uh but let's talk about David Howard Thornton's ability to act through the art the clown makeup. It's brilliant. He is top notch, man. I he's uh uh the things he's he's almost like a Jim Carrey, like in the way, in how elastic his face is, right? But he does everything through Art the Clown without ever speaking a word.
SPEAKER_01It is, and it's crazy because how he can shift it, and it it's really scary. That one second he's laughing, smiling, and then on a drop of a dime, he's got that great that just horrible looking face, and you're like, something bad's fixing to go down. And I don't know if just anyone can do that.
SPEAKER_00Now, do you think that that's part of the appeal, especially to the younger generation, is is that there is some comedy in those movies, and it mostly comes from his ability to switch to funny clown. He can switch from funny clown to scary clown.
SPEAKER_01Who's that remind you of on a dime?
SPEAKER_00Who's that remind you of? Freddie. Well, Freddie's where we're going with this.
SPEAKER_01Dude, does that not remind you of Freddie though?
SPEAKER_00Freddie's where we're going with this. I mean, Robert Englund is is the king of acting through that makeup. Yeah. I mean, he is Freddie is Robert England. And he just turned 80. Just turned 80. And he he makes you laugh through that terrifying look. And and like I said, I wanted to end with Freddie for me personally. Not a mask, but the best look. And the reason why I say that is because I love a good silhouette, an instantly recognizable silhouette.
SPEAKER_01Kind of like Indiana Jones, right? You know that Fedor. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00100%. Now, one of the things that now I know not everybody loves Crystal Skull, but one of the scenes in Crystal Skull that I really love is um they right at the beginning, they pull the Nazis pull him out of their trunk, or the Russians or whatever. The Russians, yeah. They pull him out of the trunk, and his hat kind of is blown across the ground. He picks it up and puts it on, and you don't see him, you see the shadow that it casts, and it's indie. And Freddie does that. Freddie wears a fedora too. And I don't know if one follows the other, right? But between the between the burnt up makeup, burnt up skin makeup, the fedora, and the glove hand with the with the knives on the fingers, that makes that silhouette. And the silhouette is it's totally unmistakable. You would never ever see Freddy in a silhouette form and think it was anything other than what it is.
SPEAKER_01You know, it's the sweater, and you know the red and green, that's yeah, the two colors that our eyes can't comprehend together, so it automatically you're already it's already messing with your brain.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you know, it's already messing with your brain. But yeah, I mean, and then the you know, the story of why is he burnt up. I think, you know, you get into it and it's just it's just a great look. It to me, it's it's my favorite look. Just from a horror franchise, that's my favorite look.
SPEAKER_01And I'm glad you brought that up because that and I think it is the actor. You said is it the and Robert England does it so good. Yeah, and nothing, uh the remake, we didn't all love it, but Jackie Jackie R'Haley. It just wasn't Freddie, was it? No, it just wasn't Freddie. It wasn't bad. No, but it's not you Robert England is Freddie, Freddie is Robert England.
SPEAKER_00And that's that was what I was trying to say a minute ago, is is there you cannot separate the two from each other, and therefore one can't exist without the other.
SPEAKER_01Will that be the same that for art?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. Time will tell, but that's a if I had to put money on it, I'd say yeah, I'd say that, you know, I don't think anyone else gets in the art the clown makeup and and does art the clown the way that David Howard Thornton does it. But yeah, um I was this is kind of neither here nor there, but you remember the uh DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince Nightmare on My Street. Nightmare on my street.
SPEAKER_01Love that. I had that on um cassette.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so did I. He's burnt up like a weenie. And his name is Fred. And his name is Fred. So I that part always cracked me up. Yeah, but now it to me in my mind they're they're connected. So whenever I see Freddie, you think of that? I think he's burnt up like a weenie.
SPEAKER_01Well, where we go, boss.
SPEAKER_00When I worked at Spirit, that was one of the songs that would come on.
SPEAKER_01Nightwell Mushray.
SPEAKER_00And uh that was one of the things that was like, what do they call it? The mandala effect when you when you when uh you remember something and nobody else remembers it.
SPEAKER_01Or never happened, or yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. For years, I I uh couldn't find anyone else who remembered that song. And I thought I had imagined the whole thing. I was like, man, I must have imagined that. Because I would tell my friends, like, remember when Will Smith did Nightmare on my street, and all my friends were like, dude, what?
SPEAKER_01Well, let me tell you something, they weren't real friends, were they? They weren't.
SPEAKER_00Well, they weren't horror fans, that's for sure. You should have called me. Yeah, but I would have told you. But when the internet came around, you found it, you showed it up, and I was like, okay, I'm not crazy.
SPEAKER_01Isn't it awesome too to find those little things in your brain where you're like, Yes, I knew it.
SPEAKER_00And then when I was at Spirit, one of the kids that I worked with was like, This sounds like Will Smith. I'm like, it is Will Smith. And they're like, Oh, I thought it was a fresh prince. I'm like, Fresh Prince and Will Smith are the same person. Fresh Prince of Battle. You know, it's funny to it's funny to interact interact with them and watch them discover things, right? You know, that's pretty neat. All right. Well, next week, I am unavailable. So we're gonna be gone for two weeks, y'all. We'll be back in two weeks with an awesome episode. And uh in the meantime, I want y'all to come on to our TikTok, come on to our Instagram, tell us your favorite mask. Tell us some masks that we didn't mention. What did we miss? There's so much out there, you guys. There's I mean, we're not even scratching the surface. I I could have I could have filled up an entire notebook with with masks, you know, and looks. And uh, and and yeah, we're not even we haven't even we didn't even go that far back.
SPEAKER_01We didn't, you know, there's all the universal monsters, and yeah, um yeah, it's just it's I'm looking forward to the next iconic mask, it's gotta come soon. Well because art's not like you said, that I want a cool like mask that can come on and off, and I'm waiting for it.
SPEAKER_00One thing I didn't put on my list because I assumed you would bring it up.
SPEAKER_01What? Johnny. Oh my gosh, yeah. I thank you so much. Yeah, in a violent nature, guys. I love that mask. And if it wasn't worth an arm and a leg to buy on Etsy, yeah, I I'd have it, but it's just too dang expensive.
SPEAKER_00Well, hopefully, with the second movie, hopefully he'll become more popular, and the demand for his mask will go up and there'll be more availability, and maybe prices will come down.
SPEAKER_01I found an original one, and it's five thousand dollars. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Now, let's just real quick say it and then we'll be done. It's a old-time forest fire.
SPEAKER_01It was a firefighter mask.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yep. But it wasn't a forest one, it was like as like they would use in Chicago or something.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Yep. Okay, so old timey firefighters would wear that as to protect themselves from the heat. Yep. Yeah, it's a it's a very unique look. It is. And it's but it's it's scary. It's offsetting, isn't it? It's scary in the same way that the minor is scary from my bloody Valentine. There's some similarities.
SPEAKER_01That's those big eyes, isn't it? They're bug eyes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, big goggle eyes.
SPEAKER_01And I've seen a uh uh picture still from a shot of part two, and it looks like he's got it ripped, and you can see the zombie flush underneath very Jason asks, which Johnny is Jason. Let's uh call this movie. It's Johnny's taking Jason's bot till Jason, till daddy comes home. Right. But dude, I love my violent nature. I love everything about it that kills the mask.
SPEAKER_00Seeing the exposed flesh through a crack in the mask just reminded me of Dolly. Dolly, Dolly. There's a mask that we just got this year. Yeah, Portland faced Dolly, and and uh there's a scene where uh uh the mask breaks away at the cheek and you get to see what's underneath.
SPEAKER_01And we didn't get to see what Dolly looked like, so maybe in part two.
SPEAKER_00Maybe, maybe.
SPEAKER_01All right, y'all.
SPEAKER_00Thanks for listening, and talk to you in two weeks.
