Welcome to Haunted Ozark Theater H O T, your hot horror podcast. And today we're going to talk about the horror movie Marathon. When you're sick or hurt, or when you just have some time on your hands.

Who does something like a good horror movie marathon?

Who doesn't love to just put one movie on after the other and see you know how much ground you can cover.

Right.

SPEAKER_02

It's so fun.

That brings me back to being younger in the Joe Bob Briggs and the Up All Nights. We've talked about that before, but it really does remind me of those good old days.

SPEAKER_02

And the impetus for this is I hurt my back at work and I was flat on my back for about four days. So I just ran through as many as I could to make myself forget and feel better. And it worked. Yeah, how about that?

SPEAKER_01

That's the that's all people need then is horror movies.

SPEAKER_02

That's exactly right. But we're gonna do this day in horror history. Uh today is the birthday of one Kathy Bates.

SPEAKER_01

Kathy Bates, she's awesome.

SPEAKER_02

And we've talked about her particularly in Misery before, which is, you know, I mean, that's that's her probably the pinnacle of her career, right?

SPEAKER_01

Man, Dolores Clayborn, that I mean, she's been in everything I love during American Horror Story. Well, that's what I wanted to bring up because we haven't really talked a whole lot about American Horror Story, and um I think that we need to, because it's really quality horror TV.

It is some seasons, but let's talk about some of her roles, just real quick, some of her roles in in the various seasons of that.

What's that one? And it's the Louisiana one where she's the slave owner in the case. Yes, that she's really, really good in that one, man.

SPEAKER_02

Evil, evil before evil in that, and they bring her back as that same character in the apocalypse season. Yeah, she's straight up evil. I mean, she's like evil personified in in Coven and steals the show. I I think because you got you know all the witches in the coven who all put in great performances. You got Angela Bassett who puts in a great performance, and somehow Kathy Bates overshadows them all.

I feel like yeah, that's a testament to her acting. And we mentioned a few episodes back I talked about Kevin Bacon and oh um uh you were talking about the versatility, yeah, and the guy from Third Rock from the Sun Um how good they are playing the good and the bad. Well, Kathy Bates is the exact same. She can play the biggest sweetheart, and on the other hand, someone you would never want to break your leg and be in a cabin with. Exactly.

Yeah, she's got versatility and range for sh for days. Yeah, she does. Yeah, she's fantastic. The other role that I liked her in was uh she's the bearded lady in the uh uh freak show. Yep. Yeah, that was a not a biggest role though, is it? No, it's more of a it's more of a secondary, second tier character on that show, but she does a great job. She has the you know uh Baltimore accent. And I think the big story is you know she's the mom to the Evan Peters character in that season, and that's kind of that's kind of where the emotional weight of that season is, is in that motherfucker.

Well, that's her first role on American Horse Story, that's where she first appeared, right?

Uh because she wasn't in season two.

SPEAKER_01

I think Coven was first, and then for Coven was season three. Yeah, Coven was four. Okay, yeah. Freak show was four.

Do you have a favorite season?

SPEAKER_02

Um, I mean, the original is hard to beat, but Coven is that third season, I really enjoyed. And when I was down in New Orleans, I went to the Coven house. Uh you can't go in, but you can walk right up to it.

Did you feel anything? Any strange photos about it? I didn't.

But it was cool to you know just know that that they had been on that porch, and you know, the they probably shot on sets, but I'm sure for all the exterior stuff, they used it. They used the house, yeah. And there's a little plaque out front commemorating it, saying that this is indeed the location. It's pretty cool. It's pretty cool. So uh I'm gonna do all my rewatches during the you know main segment because that's what we're talking about here, is that rewatch marathon. And I did watch some newer stuff too that I hadn't seen before. But uh, what have you re-watched?

So, what I will say, uh it's not a re-watch, but after your recommendation and everyone else who's been talking about it, I had to go watch it. And that is obsession. And you are not wrong. It's my number one horse so far. I agree. It just there's so much I want to go watch it again. I went and watched it last Saturday, but it had me asking so many questions after. Yeah, and that performance by the the lady, she needs an Oscar. I agree. I agree. Wow, I it was tremendous.

Super excited to see what she's gonna be in next.

Yeah, I'm super excited to see what this young director is gonna do. Yeah, uh, I found out his next movie is We Buy Ghost, and it's gonna be in the same universe. And he said, You're gonna hear what happens to her in that movie. And I was like cool is that! And then he was talking about my baby, uh Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and the idea and the avenue he wants to go down. And man, I am so excited.

You can tell that he's a fan, and you can tell that he's got his ear to the ground as far as what the fans are wanting out of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

For what obsession was, and how it uh the kills and everything, that movie's not about kills at all. You know what I mean? But when we got certain kills, it was like this is fantastic. Yeah, fantastic.

He did, he knocked it out. Everybody involved in that film knocked it out of the park.

Yeah, so I that's my number one horror movie so far. Uh my daughter loved it too.

So you got to go, you got to catch it while I was still in the theater.

SPEAKER_01

Well, so yeah, I did. Uh we were sitting at the house, it was at like at seven o'clock, and I was like, let's watch a procession. I'm sure it's on prime or something, we can buy it. Wasn't and I looked it up and it said because of the popularity, it's saying the theater. So we called Racer back, and it was, I think it was 6 45, and it's like, we got a showing at 7 30. Let's go. And we went and watched it, and it was packed. We had to sit in the front row. Really? It was packed.

That's awesome. And it's been out for like two months now.

So I I love seeing that, man.

SPEAKER_02

I do too. I I was seeing a thing that the people just keep going to see Obsession and keep going to see backgrounds.

I would go to watch it Obsession skin. Now I have not heard great uh my niece, who is a 17-year-old, went with her best friend and she said she didn't like it. Backrooms. Okay. She just said it was that they were laughing through the whole thing. So I don't know.

I didn't love it. Um, you know, there's a there's things to love about it, but as an old head, it it didn't do anything for me. But all my kids who are in that 18 to 22 range, they all like it. So um, yeah, I I really think it just I think it depends on your taste, and I think it does to some extent depend on your age. But I will say that there is things to like about it if you if you do decide to watch it, and I'm sure you'll watch it eventually when it's free.

I don't go in with a clear mind, you know, not being prejudiced to all that and just try to like it. I never like going into movies going, well, everyone's hated, I've got to hate it. Right. And I think a lot of people do that. You hear that, oh, it's horrible. So, oh okay, it's gonna be horrible. That's the worst thing you can do for yourself.

So let's get into the meat and potatoes here. When's the last time you gave yourself a good horror movie marathon?

SPEAKER_01

It's been a minute, but I you know me, I watch at least I'd say three to four weekly, but I don't do a marathon.

Your whole life is a marathon.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, I can't go a week without watching a horror movie.

SPEAKER_02

No, definitely not. I mean, I I'm in the same boat. You know, when I my wife works nights, so on the nights that she's at work, I'm putting on a horror movie. Yeah, I mean 100%. So, but this hurting my back. This gave me the opportunity to like literally just do it day and night for for like four days. At least three days bag, right? So um let's just do it like this. Let's I'm just gonna run down the list of all the things I've binged, and then we can just discuss them. Okay, we'll just discuss each movie because I know you've seen most of this.

And I tried to, and I'll throw in some of mine because I picked one I had never seen in two that had been over 20 years, and I forgot how much I love them, so I'd like to throw that in too. Yeah, absolutely.

We'll start. You start us off then. Give me that.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. My first one is man, and what I remember more about this movie, it's House. It do you remember the the V E H S cover? Yeah. I'll I want that poster still. Yeah, and it's a wrought hand. Yeah, but that story, dude, it's a dark comedy. I think it if it's not cult classic, it needs to be. Yeah, I forgot how good of a story that is. The Vietnam vet that and he's a writer. Yeah, and it was more funny than anything, but I loved the practical effects, just the whole setup. I didn't get the comedy as a kid. No, not at all.

But now, yeah.

Yeah, it's very dark humor, isn't it?

There is, and I think, you know, again, there's a lot of jokes that kids, you know, they go over the kids' heads, though, especially when humor's that dark, then you really don't see it as a kid.

And I just you're just scared. Steve Minor directed this. He directed Friday the 13th, 2, 3, and then a lot of others, but I thought that was pretty neat. But man, it's just I I forgot about the witch and uh Big Ben, his former buddy, who transforms into the undead monster, right? And that's all practical.

I remember the the uh the transformation, but I forgot about the witch. Yeah, right. Nice, nice.

But just watching that, it I it's one I want my rotation now, and I'm gonna I looked on Etsy, I'm buying that poster.

Perfect, perfect.

So, what do you got?

SPEAKER_02

Well, I started off my marathon with Cabin in the Woods. Oh, class because it had been a minute since I watched that, and I know we've talked about that one um probably a couple times on the podcast, so we don't need to get too deep into it, but um man, it's just so good, it's so good. It's it's honestly it's been a few years since I watched it, and it's honestly better than I remember.

It never gets bad, does it? It's one of those, and I I wish I could have that feeling back because I remember going with two buddies after work, not knowing nothing about it, thought it was gonna be a cliche horror movie. Yeah, and when that twist comes and you're like, what is going on? Yeah, it changes everything in a great way, and it was so refreshing. Yeah, so refreshing.

I agree. Now, I having just watched all the scream movies earlier this year, I saw how much it stands on the shoulders of Scream as far as the rules. Oh, yeah, they really talk about, you know, the uh they don't talk about them overtly the way Scream talks about them, but they really explore the idea of the rules in Cabinet in the Woods, but they do it in their completely own way, in a totally original way.

Well, I from what I remember, it's like the pheromones they put in the air and it makes them more into the mood, and then one of them's like, Well, we should go our do all stick together, and then something well, we should separate one good. The stoner's like, what are you talking about? Right, right. He's immune to all their kids.

Because of all the weed he smoked, yeah. Yeah, great movie. Great, great, great movie. Um, then I watched a new one uh that I hadn't seen, and it's They Will Kill You.

We seen the trailer for this, it just came out.

SPEAKER_02

It came out, I think, in March.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Uh in the theater. We saw the trailer for Psycho Killer.

SPEAKER_02

I think you're right. Um it's home now, and I watched it, and I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it. It's um without giving anything away, because it isn't a newer movie, it is a girl who's looking for her sister, and she has an idea that her sister got a job in this. It's not a hotel, it's like it's like it's in New York when you when you have super huge money and you live in an apartment building, but the apartment building is like its own ecosystem, and they're like you can't just walk in, you gotta have it's like a Patrick Bateman who like where he lives in, right? Exactly, exactly. So she suspects that her little sister got a job in this place, and she's trying to find her little sister. Okay, so she gets a job in this place to hopefully connect to get in through the front door and then hopefully reconnect with her little sister. Um, but it turns out that the everyone who lives in this building is part of a like a death cult, and they have to sacrifice somebody once every so often uh to appease you know the devil.

That's where the horror comes in. Because to be honest with you, the trailer didn't really look like horror.

So um it it does definitely turn into horror. Um it turns into a bloodbath, an absolute bloodbath. And it's not scary per se. Um it's I would call it more of an action horror movie.

SPEAKER_01

It's something more like uh ready or not.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And that's even but even takes it more into the realm of action, I'd say. But here's the thing that I really want to say. Um it's it's um like comically bloody in the way that Kill Bill is comic, okay. It's and it's obviously a stylistic choice. They're not trying to be realistic with their goal, with their gore. Um and it's fun. It's it really is fun. Like, you know, she chops a head off and it just up against the scene. Comically like cartoonish. So it was kind of like if Kill Bill was a horror movie, is is kind of my okay, my synopsis that I was and it was fun. It was you had a good time watching? Yeah, it was not like you know, oh my gosh, mind blown best thing I've ever seen, kind of thing. But when it was over, I said, that was really fun. That was a fun movie. That's awesome, man. Yeah, yeah, I enjoyed it. Awesome. What do you got next on your list?

Have you I this is the one I never seen before in dude? It's unbelievable. Burnt offerings.

I've heard of it, I haven't seen it.

SPEAKER_01

This movie, from what I and it came out before The Shining, The Changeling, and Amityville Horror, and those movies to me ripped off a lot of this. Really? It's got, I mean, it's got an eerie, dreamlike atmosphere, excellent performance. You know who's in it? Uh he's not a huge character in it, but I thought it was so funny. Um, what is his name? Merges something. Oh, Merges Baredis? Yes. He's Mickey from Rocky. Yeah. He's in it.

And they have this, it's a recurring guy, and he's this chauffeur, but it's about this house, and uh, these people come to stay in it for the summer, but the house is draining their energy and feeding off them, and there's this little well, I should say too much, but there's something up in the the attic, and the people the written don't ever go up there, never open the door, just feed it. Oh, and it is interesting, dude. You've got to watch it.

Neat to hear that all these huge blockbusters actually maybe owed something to this movie.

I think once you watch, you're gonna go wholly moly how much it took from them.

It's it's a great movie, though.

Very cool. Uh, next one on my list, and this one I've talked to you. I don't know if I mentioned on the podcast, but I've well I mentioned it on our 2026 preview show. But I know I've talked to you privately about this one because you know I'm a big folk horror guy. Um, this one came out in January, and I think it just went straight to shudder, and it's called Mother of Flags. And I finally sat down. Well, I finally laid down on flat on my back and watched it. Oh man. Fantastic. Yes, tell me about it. I mean, really good. Don't sleep on this one. Um, I've heard much about it. I know, it's really flown under the radar. Um, it's it's a modern day, but it's totally full core. It's a college-age girl, she's got incurable cancer. She has tried everything, you know, in the traditional sense to beat her cancer. And she's she's out of options. So she is visited actually in her dream by a witch. And the witch says, Come find me, I can I can cure your cancer.

This isn't good. This isn't gonna turn out good. So she has You never listened to the witch in your dream, right?

SPEAKER_02

But she's like, Well, what uh you know, what do I have to lose? I'm gonna die. You know, either way, I guess, is her is her feeling. Right. And so she actually tells her dad the truth. She's like, I this is what I want to do.

SPEAKER_01

And did she told the dad about the dream?

SPEAKER_02

Everything, and he was so she was like, Oh, she's like, I want I'm gonna go see this witch. I'd like for you to come with me. Do you see the witch and the dream? No, you never see the dream sequence.

Okay, you just get it from her point of view talking about it.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly. It's all totally through her point of view. There are some flashback scenes where you get a little backstory on the witch. Um man, it is so good. I mean, it is creepy, eerie, atmospheric, really top-notch folk horror. What platform did you watch it on? Shutter. I'll watch it. It's really good.

Really, really good.

Really, really good. I would put this as my number two this year. Wow. Right behind Obsession.

Yeah. Yeah. If I'm if I'm going if I'm top three.

It is up my alley. But if I'm top, I was thinking about this. If I'm going top three movies so far this year, I'm going um Obsession 1, Mother of Flies 2, Bone Temple 3.

That's my top three so far. So far in 2026.

I'm going to make you a promise because come December, Inabi Nature 2 is going to knock all those off, dude. I hope so. Well, I've got Mother of Flies.

It's really good. And I remember like hearing about it or maybe seeing a trailer for it all the way back in January. And I remember thinking, oh, I'm going to like this one.

Well, I bet it has a happy ending, and she beats the cancer and probably goes on to have a great career in life. I'm not going to tell you what happens, but I am going to say you know what's your name.

You might be surprised. Okay. You might be surprised. That's all I'm going to say.

What do you got? Uh, mine, my last one that I hadn't watched since I was a kid, and I forgot all about it. And we never talk about this movie, and I don't know why, because you're a big werewolf head dude. You love werewolf movies. Wolfing.

Oh, yeah.

Why don't we ever talk about that? You want to talk about getting slept on, dude?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

It's it's unbelievable.

Yeah.

It's a great werewolf movie, dude. And I don't know if you want to call them werewolves because they don't really change like that. But would you call these creatures werewolves?

I mean, probably not in the strictest sense, but I mean, what else would you call them?

SPEAKER_01

Right.

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So I I mean, I thought it was why don't we talk about it more? You're right. I mean, I've seen it, but I don't revisit it. I love the heat vision, the predator style, and you don't see that. I mean, it was just really neat in the at the detective story side of it, and they're trying to figure this out. Yeah. I thought it was just an awesome werewolf movie, man.

That's a really good one. I totally agree.

I'd put it up there with uh Werewolf and maybe not better than that, because it's not better than um Werewolf in London, but it's I mean it deserves to be up there in the top five.

Yeah, I would say that you know, when you talk about really good examples of werewolves and cinema, this is this should be talked about.

You won't like that. I liked it better than the Howling.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I knew you were gonna. The howling is my jam. I don't know why. I think there is some folk elements to the howling that's really biased. Yeah, or that that really like blows my skirt up. Alright, so another new one. Um I watched Whistle. Haven't heard of it. That's the one. Uh Daphne Keene is in it. She's the one, she's the young actress that uh plays X23. Yeah. And I she was in the Star Wars Acolyte. Yeah, of Logan. She was in Logan and she was in Deadpool Mullery. Um, she stars in this movie Whistle. And it's the one that's about the Aztec death whistle.

Okay. Yeah, you brought this to my.

I think we talked about it in the the previous.

Anyone who blows well, that's a true legend, too. Like if you blow it, you you're dead.

It's a real, it's based on a real thing. You know, the Aztec death whistle is a real thing that that we have found in, you know, South America, uh, archaeologically, you know. Um, but it's uh it was very final destination.

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

It took the final destination blueprint, I'd say, and ran with it, and applied it to the the Aztec death whistle thing. Um, good young cast, you know, entertaining.

Forgettable though.

SPEAKER_02

You got the maybe a little bit forgettable, nothing to write home about. And they're all the actors are are teenagers, so it's it's got a little bit of that teen.

How the kills? I want to know about the kills that you you mentioned um Final Destination.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah. They're all CGI, and it's not bad CGI, but it's very obvious that it's CGI.

CGI, yeah, yeah.

Uh, it's probably worth a watch. I think you'd get if you watched it once, you'd probably say, that's cool. I'm glad I watched it. But it's not one that you're gonna constantly keep it in my Rolodex.

Yeah, yeah, for sure.

Uh, next one is a rewatch. I sat down again. Well, I laid down. I need to quit saying I sat down. I was I was laying down. Uh, I went back, and I don't think I've seen this since I saw it in the theater. Death Proof.

Deathproof, yes.

SPEAKER_02

That's a great one. Yeah, that's cool. I uh I went to you know Grindhouse and saw the double feature in the theater, and I bought uh Planet Terror on Blu-ray, and I've watched that multiple times, and I don't think I've ever re-watched Deathproof. So I think this was my first rewatch of Deathproof since how long's that been since it came out in the theater. But when was that?

Oh eight. Old?

SPEAKER_02

It's almost 20 years old. I think so. I think so.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but I loved it, I really enjoyed it. That movie's kick ass. It is, it is what a great cast. And those women getting the rubridge. I mean, I just remember smiling at the end, and I love the way it ends so abruptly.

Yeah, you know, they beat the piss out of him, and that's like the end.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. You're like, whoa, that was so cool. Yeah, that's Kirk Douglas. Um the main Kurt Russell. Kurt Russell. He I loved him in that too. Yeah, he's great. In the car, and it's not for uh you, it's for me.

SPEAKER_02

He's so slimy in it. He's not really like, I mean, obviously he's evil, but he doesn't play it like as your straight, you know, evil villain.

SPEAKER_01

He plays it kind of like slimy, smarmy, kind of almost seduces him first, and then correct me if I'm wrong. He's do you know him in any other movie world where he's the villain? Because he's usually your your good guy. I mean maybe uh Guardians of Galaxy 2. Yeah, but not the same, not the same. Um that man, that is a movie I need to re-watch. That's good.

I love I'm well, first of all, I love that you you get probably half an hour, 45 minutes into it, and then it tells you a complete story, and then it time jumps. Yeah, and then the second half of the movie is like a whole nother story.

And I think that was really neat. I think that was really neat too. And you said it the cast.

The cast is so good, it's stacked. I mean, the cast is stacked, absolutely stacked. And I was doing a little research on the behind the scenes stuff. Um Quentin Tarantino was like if we're gonna do it, we're gonna do this for real. Meaning No, no CGI. Every single car chase scene, they got the real cars, they rigged them up, they did all those chases for real. The girl on the hood of the car, that's all stunts, stunts.

Yeah, and that's people we don't talk about enough, too, stunt performers like that when they deserve Oscar.

That's not the point, especially in this genre. You know, we ask a lot of our stunt people in horror.

It's funny because I was just watching Friday 13th, part three and four, and they were talking about uh Ted White, who plays Jason in four, was talking about how great the stunt women were. Well, Zoe Bell, who's the stunt woman on the hood, she is a real stunt woman, and Quentin didn't want to cast like uh a regular actress for the regular scenes, and then a stunt woman for the scenes on the hood. So he just cast her for the whole thing. And just let her go, let her shine. That's awesome, you know. And he said, Um, in this other interview that I saw, he said I he said Deathproof is a slasher. He said, I took he said I I I watched slasher movies, I watched slasher movies, and I distilled the essence of slashers into like beats. You gotta hit these beats. He's like, and then I applied it to a car movie and put it in it.

And yeah, now that you say that, you can definitely see that the beats. Yeah. That's funny you said that because I was watching an interview with him, and uh he said his um he was on one of the talk shows, and they're like, What's your greatest movie of all time? And he's saying he goes to Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and he I think it's Jimmy Fowler and some, and they kind of laughed, and he's like, No, if you think about it, just not in horror, it's just cinematic, the art of it. It's one of the greatest movies ever made. I was like, that's awesome to hear.

It's an immaculate, flawless movie. Really, it really is. There's there's nothing you can nitpick in Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Yeah, and I think he did say that was one of the ones that he watched because he was talking about. I mean, you know, he's a 70s guy for sure. Quentin is, you can tell.

When he was talking about the slashers that he watched in preparation for um writing the script for Deathproof, he was naming all 70s um slashers, and I think I'm pretty sure Texas is one of them that he mentioned. Saying Deathproof, that makes me want nachos.

Those uh those shots of his mouth, and it's just all greasy and stuff, and Rose McGallan's sitting there kind of watching him, or you can tell their stomachs kind of turning a little bit. It is a vampire movie, yeah. It's modern day, it's LAPD, it's vampires, and it's also very like menace to society. It's like Blood and Crips gang movie. It's it like commentary, like kind of movie. Whoever the writer and directress, it it really feels like they said, What if we made Menace to Society a horror movie?

Super fun. It's it's one of those ones that it's don't take it crazy seriously. Yeah, it's amazing. Just have fun with it. But this one is good enough to warrant some rewatches, I think. I think you will come back to this one. How's Justin's performance? I I I'm a big Justin Long fan man. He is he's the lead. You know, the the it's got kind of an ensemble cast. So I was he a cop in it? He's the he's a cop. Okay, yeah, that's what I thought. Uh it's got kind of an ensemble cast, so I wasn't sure if he was gonna be like the leading man in this, or if he was just gonna be another one of the characters, but no, he's he's the lead, and he does great. And uh you just have to watch and see if he gets killed or not. And Shudder. That one Hulu. I can't remember what I watched it on. It might have it was on it was on either like Hulu or Peacock, I think. But um, yeah, it's out there to watch. Yeah, I can't remember exactly which one I watched.

You have to, yeah. I um have been a subscriber to Shudder for years, years. I I remember um when it was like an add-on for Amazon Prime. Uh now it's its own streaming platform. But back in the day when I first signed up for it, like we had Prime, and then there was a little button that caught my eye, and it was like you can add Shutter onto your Prime for $1.99. Now it's I think it's $9.99. Oh, yeah, I think you're right. For for the actual platform. But yeah, I mean, it shutter is fantastic. Not only that, Shudder is where you're gonna find a lot of the you know, hundred greatest moments, hundred greatest films of all time.

You know what I watched. I watched Late Night with the Devil. Oh, and right before that, I watched that interview with is it uh Corey, Corey Barker? The kid who directed a Curry Barker, and he was talking about his Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I thought, how awesome would it be if you could if he's remaking or nothing? But the main guy from Late Night with the Devil would be the hitchhiker. David I think he would be great in that family. Yeah, yeah. Do you think what because that's a good now?

Yeah, that's um that's a good one. Now, see, I watched that in the theater and then I rewatched it when it very first came out on streaming. And that's a shutter original, too. But I haven't watched it since since. So I I saw it twice in pretty short order, like two years ago. But when I watched it this past week, that's the first time I seen it in probably a couple years. Did you put that number one the year it came out? That was my top pick that year, yeah. Yeah, 24. That was my number one for 24. 2024, wow. Um, I had forgotten how many people die at the end.

Like the demon claims a bunch of people at the very end. Is this a possession movie? Whore? Yeah, oh yeah, 100%. Or cult, cultish. It's it's got some cult and folk elements, but it's I would classify it as a possession movie. Um it's so unique. It's that's the thing that that's the thing that struck me again is it's hundred percent original. There is nothing like it. That's why we love it. Nothing, there is nothing out there like this movie. Yeah, just the format of it and the way they approach the story.

And you talk about a little, I mean the acting made it, the performance is there, everyone around and that the the young girl who gets she does great.

She's she's awesome when she's like staring into the camera, and he's trying to like, hey, look over here. Yeah, talk, talk to me. I'm the host, like eyes on me. And she's like staring into the camera, and she's like so creepy. She's like, uh, oh, okay, Jack. Yes, of course, Jack.

Yeah, like yeah, you need that one on Blu-ray, and we need to be watching some behind-the-scenes stuff on that.

Oh man. That is that was my top pick for 2024, and I'm here to tell you in 2026 it's just as good, if not better, than I remember. Yeah, absolutely. It's really, really good. Um that's so cool. I watched it three weeks ago. So I had not seen Black Phone 2 yet.

So I went and watched part one again, and then I watched part two. So I watched them back to back. I will disagree and say part one is better. Okay. I I heard the same thing, I including from my daughter who said part two is better. Part two is really good. Gory? Um part two is a totally different movie. It's it's it changes location, it almost changes subgenre. Really? It's it does something totally different, which I really appreciated because it's not just a retread of the first one, which would have been easy to do.

The first one was so good and so successful, and it's unique in its own way, it is, that they could have just totally, you know, re-tread it and put it out and said, here's your part two, you know.

They tried something totally different with it, and they did a good job. I'm not I'm here to tell you that it's very different, but very good. I I personally say part one is is is a better movie. So just two different movies, but they're just two different movies, and they're great. And part two um really, really expands on the lore and of the grabber, yeah.

All right. Next, I'm gonna tell you about my watch of a movie you recommended to me. I watched it. And I watched the original, and I watched the sequel that I don't know if you even knew there was a sequel. Okay. 2001 Maniacs.

Yes, I did 2002 Maniacs too, right? Oh, it's called 2001 Maniacs Field of Screams. I've heard about it, I've never seen it.

And I went and watched the original, 2000 Maniacs. So I watched all three. Um, so I watched them in this order. I watched 2001 Maniacs, then I watched the original, okay, then I watched the sequel, and it felt like I watched three very different movies. But honestly, the the remake and its sequel are similar to each other. But here's what I'm gonna say. I'm gonna start with the original. Do the original 2000 Maniacs, um, it came out in the early 60s, right? And it is not a comedy. No, it is not at all. It's straight horror. Yeah. Um 2001 Maniacs with Robert Ingland is mayor. Horror comedy. They lean into the comedy, and so I've laughed out loud during that movie. That makes them two very different movies. Now, apparently, I didn't know this. Um, you know, in the 70s, we were talking about Quentin Tarantino. You know, there's that whole black exploitation movement, right? And Quentin is a huge fan of those, and he oftentimes incorporates that black exploitation thing into his movies. Well, in the early 60s, there was a bunch of movies that were made specifically for the drive-in theater in a genre called HIX. And I'm guessing that was more 2000 Maniacs. If it wasn't the first, it was one of the biggest in this genre of Hicksploitation. And it was all about coming to the South and finding out that we're crazy down here.

Yeah, we're nuts. I wonder if that's why the South gets such a, you know, I think it's part of the reason.

I think it's part of the reason. Yeah. So yeah, 2001, 2000 exploitation, made for made to go see at the drive-in, uh, made to not, you know, take it real serious, just go have fun with it. Get freaked out by all the rednecks down here that might kill you if you drive drive into the south. Don't drive below the Mason Dixon line if you don't want to lose your head. Um, but it was straight horror. Um and it was it was tons of fun. It was tons of fun. But it's it is a 60s, early 60s movie, so it's it's um nothing super hardcore about it. You know, they they were they were censored pretty heavy back then, but it gets its point across, that's for sure. 2001 Maniacs takes the movie whole different road. Well, but it does remake it. It does, but it's totally different film, like you said. The they even two of the kills in the original are straight up copied in 2001 Maniacs, but it's it's a comedy through and through.

Honestly, I think I think that the exploitation thing hasn't necessarily aged well, but if you if you do it as a comedy now, it's it's it's permissible. Right. You know. Um, so yeah, Robert England is the mayor, and and essentially uh they they post a lookout on the highway, and when they see someone coming with a northern license plate, they put up a fake detour sign and they route you into their town, and then they convince you to stay for their guts and glory celebration. And then they they're they're on a mission to kill northerners. And they do for revenge of uh of the Civil War. Yeah. So then I watched the sequel 2001 Maniacs Field of Screams. Does it got Robert in it? It does not. Robert Englin is replaced by Bill Mosley. Oh, well, that's gonna be fun. He plays the same it's the same character. Okay, he's the mayor. He's the mayor, and he has the same name and the same mannerisms and everything. And all the other actors Same. Same, they got all the other same actors. Okay, Shea. And all the other little character actors, all the little rednecks and stuff, it's all the same actors, but they just got Bill Mosley to step in for Robert for Robert England. And the premise in this one is um people have g have gotten aware of this whole thing.

Yeah. So they can't get people to detour into their town anymore. They just can't do it. So they pack the whole thing up and they go to Iowa. And they recreate it in Iowa. Out in the field. That's why they call it Field of Screams. I love it. I've got to watch it now. It's goofy. I mean it's gotta be. It's goofy in the best way. Right. You know, but yeah, it's it's this it's it's a basically this one is a retrip of the first one. Right. Um, but it's Bill Mosley instead of Robert England, and it's in a cornfield in Iowa instead of who's the best mayor, Robert England or Bill Mosley, because both of those guys are legends.

I mean, I think how are you gonna how you gonna top Robert England? You know, Bill Mosley does a very admirable job filling in Robert England shoes, but I mean, come on.

So yeah, I watched all three of those and uh how to get old time. How to good old time. Um, two more on my list, and then I was done with my marathon. Um on Father's Day, I was stuck on the couch, couldn't get up much, and the kids were so awesome. They they kind of waited on me hand in foot throughout the day, and they said, Dad, why don't you pick the movies today? And I tried to be respectful of the kids watching, and my wife watching, she watched it too. Um, so I said, you know what, let's do Stephen King movies because that's good, even though they can be scary, it's good for the for the whole family, you know. So we started with Stand By Me. Okay, yeah, because and that's not necessarily a horror movie. And you get life license out of that, yeah. Yeah, and my daughter has been, you know, between Stranger Things and between my youngest daughter, between Stranger Things and between it. She's been kind of into these movies where the main characters are are young adults, young young boys, you know, and girls, but in the case of Stand By Me.

And I told her, I said, you know, this is the same writer who wrote it. It's in the same world as really yeah, it's the same world, it's it's it's got a lot of commonality with these things that really does love. So let's check it out. So we watched Stand By Me, and my wife had seen it before because she's our age, but I don't think anybody else had seen it, and they all loved it.

I don't know anyone who doesn't love Stand By Me. Yeah, such a good movie, such a good movie, and that one was directed by um Rob Reiner. And he just his son.

Yeah, that's yeah, so tragic. It is very tragic. That's so tragic. Um, the last one on the list, and the the one that we ended Father's Day Stephen King viewings with was The Dead Zone.

The Dead Zone. Yeah, no, that's a good one too, man.

My wife even hadn't seen that one. They were all like, we don't know anything about this movie. I'm like, great. Good, even better. Even better. Let's do it. So we watched The Dead Zone. And uh man, Chris Walken is so good.

No, not too often. And uh, you know, another classic Stephen King, Somebody Gets Psychic Powers. Really, really good. Really, really good movie. You had quite the marathon, my man. Man, I some good movies in there. I'm I'm proud of uh my little curation that I did.

I'm just so proud that you death proof, dude. That brought back such good memories. I've got to watch it. Because I never would have classified it as a slasher, but now that you've said those things and the beats, I'm gonna look at it a whole new way.

And you'll see, you'll you'll connect all those dies and you'll be like, dang, he did it. And I think that's kind of uh I think a lot of people forget when they're thinking of Quentin movies, they forget about Deathproof altogether. Yeah. And um that's definitely slept on it's slept on, and it shouldn't be. It shouldn't be. It's this is not just a good Quentin Tarantino movie. This is a good movie. I like that. You all need to watch it if you haven't seen it. Deathproof is is fantastic. And if you want to recreate the grindhouse double feature, you know, at home, like how we had it in the theater back in 08, then do it.
