FBT Daily Devotional: Hebrews 8
We walk through Hebrews 8 to show how Jesus serves as our High Priest in the true tabernacle and why the new covenant surpasses the old. We trace the shift from earthly shadows to heavenly reality and how God writes his law on our hearts by grace.
• Jesus ministering at the right hand in the heavenly tabernacle
• Comparison of Aaronic duties with Christ’s priesthood
• Jesus offering himself as the ultimate sacrifice
• Earthly copies and the heavenly blueprint shown to Moses
• Why the new covenant is better than the old
• God’s law written on hearts and minds
• Personal knowledge of God and full forgiveness
• Gratitude for grace and the Spirit within
Good evening, folks. Good evening, folks. And we're going to tonight I am been tasked with uh going over Hebrews 8. Now, it's basically going to be it's titled uh Jesus is our high priest, and it would take me a minute to try to get a lot of stuff out of it, but you know what? It's it's all good. That's like Lord will he's gonna do what he's gonna do with us today. You know, as I said, we do have a high priest that is sitting at the right hand of the Father, uh ministering on our behalf, he's interceding on our behalf, and there is where he's he's ministering in the in the heavenly tabernacle, which is the which is a the true place of worship that was built by the Lord and not by human hands. So it's very, very it's much more better better than it is here than it was on earth. Now, I know that I mentioned uh last week when I was doing my presentation talking about the high priest. You know, the high priest has certain duties, and I we I did the uh comparison of Jesus being high priest, Jesus as a high priest and Aaron as the high priest, and they a lot of similarities that you know with uh the high priest here on earth did that in the tabernacle is actually a foreshadowing of what Jesus is doing in the new covenant. He was in the old covenant here in the new covenant because Jesus is actually, and he since he is our high priest, you know, some of the duties that they might have actually had, recapping it uh just a little bit, you know, they they atone for the sins of the people. The high priest went into the tabernacle to go before God to atone for the sins of the nation of Israel, and that's just like what Jesus has done, the Jesus does here, um atoning for our sins. He died, he died for us so that we can have a be reconciled with the Father. And you know, other things that uh the high priest was a mediator and an intercessor for the people of Israel, like Jesus is interceding on our behalf at the right hand of the Father for us. Um also, you know, he was in charge of temple administration. And if there's a temple that is the a temple or the tabernacle, the administration of the things that are going on in there, that's that's how Jesus is. He's a he's an administrator over all of us. And then there's the he's the oversight, he's the he oversaw, he oversaw worship. And basically, you know, especially when it comes to like we've been talking in the old testament and Leviticus, especially about the offering, different offerings and sacrifices that have excuse me, they have to be made, and those are a form of worship. And Jesus actually did the same thing when he offered his body to the when he offered his body to to die for us, which is a form of a form of worship to the to the Lord. And finally, there was actually, you know, teaching and blessing. Jesus is they the high priests were teachers, and they actually pronounced blessings over the people of Israel, as well as you know how Jesus has does the same thing with us. He is the master teacher, and he is actually he does pronounce a lot of blessings over us in the heavenly realms. So, with all that being said, you know, every high priest, uh, I learned from this chapter is that every high priest is appointed to present offerings and sacrifices to God. So our high priest, Jesus, must actually do something, must actually have also have to offer something. And what I got out of that is that Jesus offered himself. So he is an alt, he was the ultimate sacrifice that was given to God, as that is shown in this particular chapter. Now, another thing that I did get out of it was we know when we say the Lord's Prayer, and we you know we say it, um, thy will be done in heaven as it is on earth, done on earth as it is in heaven. You know, the the work that the uh high priests have to do is only a uh copy and a shadow of what is actually done in heaven. And as I said earlier about how the um that the there was a tabernacle that he's at, that he's there in heaven, that was built in heaven and is not on earth. So, as I said, the um the things that are done, the things that are done here on earth is uh foreshadow what's done in heaven. Like when in this particular chapter, the Lord, an example of that was when the Lord told Moses as he was building the tabernacle to do it just like he to do just like he was just like he has seen it. And these were plans that come directly from heaven, so he had to copy some of the things that were actually done um as the Lord's as the blueprints uh the Lord was given to him that came directly from heaven. Now, and also Jesus' priestly work also is far far surpasses what the earthly priests have to do, since um it was working from a far better plan. The plan, you know, we always talk about the new covenant and the old covenant, the old covenant, the new covenant is far better, a far better plan than the old covenant covenant, because it is we it is with it is done through with Jesus and through Jesus, and it is a form of grace. Um so if the first plan, if the first plan, which was the old covenant, hadn't hadn't worked out, the second covenant, the second covenant wouldn't be needed. So we I do think, I thank God that we do have that we do have a covenant, a new covenant that is formed by grace it with through with through Jesus. The new plan that he's actually, the new plan that he's talking about, especially dealing with this new covenant, is that it is not going to be on paper or chiseled in stone. Jesus is right, is is being written, the plan the plan in us, uh carving it into the lining of our hearts, excuse me, uh deep inside, so that the laws are written in our oh sorry, so that the laws are written in our thoughts, it's written in our hearts, and that way we don't have to uh go to any type of a school to learn about him. We will actually get to know him firsthand and personally, then nobody will have to uh teach their friends or family about him. In this, he will actually be kind to us, he will forgive us for the wicked things we've done, and he will not continue to think about our sins. So uh in closing, though, I would like to say, you know, I am very, very thankful, and I want to, I do want to thank him for you know having this new covenant, being our being our covenant, being being the grace that we need to have so that we can he can live in us instead of us having to um you know have it written on stone. So just like you know, just I think uh dad Hagen actually wrote a book saying how the Holy Spirit is back then they it was upon them, it was upon them, but now he is within us. So I just thank God for his grace and his mercy, and thank well both all three the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, for everything that they have done, that they are doing, and that they will do in through and about our lives. And with that, we can go to breakout rooms.
