What's up, everybody? Welcome to the Water Bros podcast. As always, we are your host. I'm Zach. This is my little brother Ben. And today, grab a drink, get to the bench because we have a little bit of a Philly Philly special for y'all today. We're gonna be talking some ball. Uh, cannot wait, Benny. How are we doing today? Let's let's dive into some ball talk, dude.
SPEAKER_02Some ball talk. I am excited about this episode. I love the off-season water bros because we get to try a whole bunch of stuff. We get to try some new things. Um, so I'm excited to hear what the bench warmers think about this in particular. Um, you know, things couldn't be better. I I'm feeling great. How are you feeling? I mean, obviously, couldn't be better doing this.
SPEAKER_03I'm I'm doing great. I am also excited to to try this kind of new format for an episode out. We're we're gonna hopefully help people expand their ball knowledge today. That's right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there's there's really two key areas we're touching on today. So it's gonna be a little bit shorter episode. I know you just highlighted this in our last episode. We do say that a lot and we just get rolling. But um first and foremost, we'll we'll fill the jug, we'll be a little bit quicker on that before we touch in, um, dive into a goat snake draft. So we're so we'll describe what the details are once we get to that here in just a second. And then last but not least, do you know ball? We're gonna be diving into the details of some of our favorite moments in history or moments in history that maybe we want to hear more about.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that we just want to get to know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that we want to get to know, and we're gonna let people know our thoughts, our opinions, our perspectives of said um, you know, moments. And today is is very, very special. I don't know if we could pick a better one to start off with than Philly Philly.
SPEAKER_03The Philly special. Yes, sir. And that if you don't know what that is, stick around because you're about to find out. Yeah, expand your ball knowledge. But Benny, what's what's filling the jug for you today, dude?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you know, I would say, you know, recording the pod tonight, you know, I love I love that. Um I would say that I am excited to sleep as well. That's filling the jug. I don't know why. I I get way more tired nowadays than I ever have.
SPEAKER_03Hey, life is just very busy, dude.
SPEAKER_02It is extremely busy. I've never looked actually the one time I did look forward to sleep just as much as I do now was on my mission. I feel like I feel like I would look forward to sleeping because of how much we were going all the time. And it feels like that daily, but even you know, it's just different. Um, a different go-go. But overall, life is great. You know, we're we're here, we're doing this, family's healthy, life is good. Nothing's better than that for filling the jug.
SPEAKER_03But how about for you? Nothing better. I'll I'll just touch on two things. We talked a little bit about it in our last episode, but Gwenny is Pythrain, so that's fantastic. Being on the other side of that is like the best thing. Yeah, great to not be changing so many diapers. Um, so shout out Gwenny for getting the job done. Shout out Gwen. Added to her her strengths, and then I got a little Drew story that just you know filled the jug as a dad, and hearing him and his love for sport that's starting to grow. Um, he's been starting to dress himself, like he that has not been something that Drew has been ever interested in. Like he he's very dependent upon us to help him get into his outfit for the day, but he has started to shift on that. And the other day I said, Hey buddy, go put on an outfit for school. You get you can pick a shirt, pick some pants, get your jacket on, just so you're ready to go. And uh, because I was working from home with with the surgery and everything else, and uh, he comes out and he's like, Dad, look what I got on. And uh he shows me his shirt which has red stripes. He's like, I got the the red stripes for the Chiefs. He had put on his Eagle hoodie, he's like, I got the green, I got the Eagles, and then uh uh what did he say for his pants? He even had something for his jeans, and now I'm blanking on it. But just to hear him say, he's like, I got the red for the Chiefs, blue for the or green for the Eagles, and then he had something for the the gene choice as well, and it's just so good to hear like that was his thought process and just why he picked his outfit for the day. And so that filled a joke. I absolutely loved it. It's like, heck yeah, dude.
SPEAKER_02What better thought process though? I mean, the kid is thinking about it right. I love that so much.
SPEAKER_03So good. So that's fun to see him uh get a little amped up for for the ball fandom. But that's amazing.
SPEAKER_01That does fill the jug.
SPEAKER_03Gotta find the fill the jug moments where you where you have them, you know what I mean? Yes. No, I I agree completely. Benny, this this goat snake draft that we're gonna do. So we're essentially obviously those of us, we've done drafts before. We're gonna we're gonna do five picks each. We can't duplicate those picks, but we're picking our lineup of the goats. Who would be the best of five that you could put into one I guess unit that would be the goat team of goats?
SPEAKER_02Yes, that's what we're going for. I think that's the best way of putting it. So you want to we're you know, we're drafting a team of the goats of the goats, right? So, okay, who who deserve to come out on top? And right before we started the episode, we had Siri pick a random number, me and Zach picked a number. It was closest to mine, so I get a pick. Benny goes first, which I don't know if that's an advantage, Benny, or a disadvantage, because I get to pick twice. That's true. It is snake draft style, so you get back-to-back picks. That is a very good point. I wasn't thinking about that completely, but that there is one reason in particular, because I just feel like I just don't want you to take him. Number one pick. If you're talking about who is the GOAT of the GOAT, it's one man that stands above the rest. Three Hall of Fame careers in his one career that he had. Not one, he has more Super Bowls than teams have even sniffed. Tom Brady is number one. No doubt about it. He is the number one draft pick. I am very happy that I gotta pick him first.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and I knew, I knew with you being the first pick, there was no other pick possible for you on that front. It there was just no chance that you're going any other direction, and uh, I'm not gonna be I'm not mad about it. I I mean you gotta you gotta pick the goat. That's your goat right there. That is your goat. Yes. So uh Tom Brady, I'm gonna pick for my first. Uh, we're gonna go. I I gotta think for for football. I'm not gonna I don't know if I got my football one lined out, but I'm gonna pick basketball. We're gonna go Michael Jordan. You and I have had this debate on the podcast before, but I am gonna go Michael Jordan for my GOAT in that number one seed. Yeah. And for my very respectable. I mean, you you can't it I mean it's Michael Jordan. Dude's unbelievable. Fantastic pick. For my second pick, and uh, I don't think I'll be stealing this from you by any means, but it's just a pick that I just love and I want to have it. I'm gonna go float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. I'm going Mohammed Ali, the heavyweight champion. Wow, as my number two pick. Wow.
SPEAKER_02Okay. That surprised me. I was not expecting you to go Muhammad Al Ali, Cassius Clay with the number two pick, the number three pick overall.
SPEAKER_03The dude, I mean, the dude is a pillar. Like he he it I think it's hard to not put him in there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, I'm gonna let you know right now, I could not be happier that you just picked him because I think I may surprise you with the route I'm going here.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, uh you might. We'll see. What are you what do you got? Number two and number three, Benny.
SPEAKER_01You left me with arguably the greatest athlete of all time. Where are you going with that?
SPEAKER_02The I mean, his nickname might as well just be gold medal.
SPEAKER_03Give me Michael Yeah, Michael, Michael Phelps, great pick.
SPEAKER_02The goat of swimming, the goat of the Olympics. I mean, the 2008 Beijing Olympics will never be touched again, in my eyes. That was awesome to see as a 10-year-old kid. Michael Phelps's pick number four, steal the draft already. So I feel good about that. And then I should have pulled Phelps. That would have been a good pick. That is a good pick. And then guess what? I I I told you I have a strategy. I've got a very solid strategy, and I'm between two people here. Okay. But there is one player that anyone uh you know across the sports world would say, this lady, our first female hitting the list.
SPEAKER_03Oh man.
SPEAKER_02What are you gonna do? The GOAT tennis player, Serena Williams.
SPEAKER_03And great pick. Serena Williams is a great pick. I think she she definitely deserves a spot on the the podium there.
SPEAKER_01She barely edged out one other lady I was thinking about, but Benny, that was a solid.
SPEAKER_03That was not throughout I expect you to go. I expect you to stay more traditional sports than uh swimming and tennis. Hey, we're going goats. You're telling me who is the best at what they do? And that I mean, you nailed it for my next pick. I'm gonna kind of in the same vein. I am gonna go another absolutely incredible female, probably someone who you were also thinking about, but I'm going Simone Biles. Love that pick. Absolutely insane gymnastic gymnast. Again, the what she does, no one else touches. Has tricks named after her because she is the only one who can do it. Yeah. That's GOAT status right there. I told you I didn't know the route I wanted to go with football, uh, but I I feel like this just keeps the name just keeps coming to mind. And it it honestly goes hand in hand with your TB12 for my fourth pick for my football goat. I'm going wide receiver. Connected to TB12. I'm going Mr. Randy Moss. Okay. Alright. I mean, inspired to generate you got mossed. Great segment, by the way, on TV. Love that you got mossed. Great segment.
SPEAKER_02Everybody wants to play like Randy Moss. I love that. That, you know, you you can put him up there in terms of the conversations of like Randy Moss and then Jerry Rice was right before him, right? Yeah. Jerry Rice was another one I thought about. Those two are fantastic. I am loving how this is shaping out because I get two picks to finish off, and I cannot believe who I get a pick to finish this. I'm grinning ear to ear right now. Because you're leaving me, and has has there been a you know a few blips in this guy's life? Yes. There has. Okay. Did he just get arrested for another DUI? Yes. Probably. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But Tiger Woods as the goat of golf. No, solid. You saw it. He was on the mind. He was on the list. Give me Tiger Woods with my fourth pick. And I can't believe who you're gonna do as your fifth pick, but I already know who you're gonna do. You already know. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I like I said, you are leaving me with the gold mine. The fact that I get Tom Brady, Michael Phelps, Serena Williams, Tiger Woods, and a rounded out, the true GOAT of basketball. LeBron! LeBron James! Absolutely electric.
SPEAKER_03I love this. We need to do this more often. Yeah, this is an absolute blast. LeBron James, again, arguable whether it's MJ or King James. Um, but I thought about double dipping and just picking Michael Jordan and LeBron because I knew you'd want LeBron, but that just felt disingenuous. I couldn't do it. Yeah. So we didn't do it. That I I respect that. I respect that a lot. We couldn't double dip like that. Well, Benny, for my last pick. And I'm trying in my brain, like, who are they gonna think won this battle? You got you got some great heavy hitters. And some of the people that come to mind is like, do I go into NASCAR? There's some real NASCAR goats out there, but that seems like a bad choice.
SPEAKER_02I'm not gonna go. No, do you know if you're gonna go, if you're gonna go one of those type sports, like completely off the rails, you gotta go with who do you think I who do you think you are?
SPEAKER_03I am I am! Yeah, the ball, he is the goat of bowling, absolutely electric. Um do I go Littler, the the dynamic dart thrower? No, I don't. But you could you could go who I'm gonna go with is I think one of the few sports where everybody agrees he is the goat. And it is in hockey, and that is the great Wayne Gretzky. That's such a good pick. So we're gonna finish out with Wayne Gretzky. Again, I think he's one of the few sports where it's just a unanimous, yeah, Wayne Gretzky is is the goat.
SPEAKER_02I love that, and I am actually I'm very disappointed in both of us right now. I'm realizing something. What? The fact that I serve my mission in Argentina and I don't have Leonel Messi up here.
SPEAKER_03Is Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the fact that we don't have soccer up here might be egregious.
SPEAKER_01That's a bad look. But hey. I still like my goats.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, I mean you may like them, but I'm not better than I freaking lived in Barcelona, Spain, dude. I when Lionel was there. When he was playing for BB.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that is a miss on both our parts. I completely agree with you. That's that's a miss. I think the shock pick of the draft was Muhammad Ali. I was not expecting you to go that route. I love I love the Muhammad Ali pick. I was like, but that's the thing, but I love it for a lot of reasons. I was shocked by it. I was not expecting that. But I do love that.
SPEAKER_03And then my thought was I I knew some of these picks you weren't gonna have on your radar. For sure. I knew you weren't gonna pick Jordan. I knew for sure you weren't gonna have Ali up there. But I like I like it. So yeah, let us know. Let us know who we missed, who's in your goat of goats team.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's that's fun. We're gonna have to yeah.
SPEAKER_03Who won between Zach and Ben.
SPEAKER_02We'll post this out with the teams and we'll see what everyone's thoughts are. That's a great setup to go into arguably one of the GOAT plays in Super Bowl history.
SPEAKER_03100%, Benny. You couldn't have said it better. I couldn't have said it better myself.
SPEAKER_02It hurts. But tell the people what we're talking about, how we're gonna finish talking about what we're gonna finish talking about on this episode.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so in this inaugural segment of Do You Know Ball, it's basically what we're doing is we're picking something, and probably the route that we're gonna inform ourselves more about it is via watching a documentary, so you can watch and get the better description than we could ever provide with audio. But we have chosen to cover the Philly special, and uh that is the play, arguably, that won the Eagles their very first Super Bowl in 2018 against your Patriots, and so uh we we watched the Philly special 30 for 30 doc. You can watch it on ESPN. Uh it's a good time shortwatch, but let's let's let's learn more about ball, Benny. To start off, talking a little bit about experience. I obviously am an Eagles fan. I remember vividly watching this at mom and dad's house. And uh when this play happened, I mean just the electricity that you felt, and this game was an absolute on offensive onslaught. Like they just it was back and forth, back and forth. It was a shootout, crazy, crazy game. But yeah, to I I mean, you'll I'll never forget, never forget that moment. But for you, it's a little different. Tell us a little bit about your experience with Philly's special before we dive into the details.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think uh yeah, obviously the our experiences, what happened with it. I vividly remember I was on my mission at the time, but I remember going to P-Day the next day, so P-Day, the free day missionaries have on that Monday, and the picture that I got sent in the email was of you, mom, dad, Jane, and it's a selfie with the the game in the background, and I can see the green confetti. Um, so I remember that piece very, very vividly, and then I remember hearing like seeing what the statistics were and being absolutely gobsmacked that Tom Brady could play that kind of game, and a Bill Belichick-led team lost. That was uh that was surprising. Um, that was my experience. I won't forget that. I would say just the the little update to this, and just so everyone knows as well, is you know, I didn't really know much of the story. Like, I know now, like obviously I know what happened generally, but I didn't look into the details because I knew the Patriots lost that year. So, like, there are a lot of things that I learned about watching this documentary that very insightful.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, I I absolutely love it. We're gonna dive into the to those details here. So to set the stage, again, this is before we get to the actual Super Bowl, this is the 2017 to 2018 NFL season. Both the Patriots and the Eagles have these incredible seasons going for them. The Eagles coming into the season, uh, they had finished strong under Carson Wentz. He was playing his best ball, and they go on a tear for a majority of the regular season. They're they're 10-1. When in the game to clinch the NFC East Division, Carson Wentz goes down. Yeah. And a scramble incredible ball. Incredible ball. He he is lighting it up. And as he goes for a rushing touchdown, he gets hit in his knee and he's out. He's done. And so uh for the Eagles, they have to turn to the one and only Nick Foles. Who Nick Foles, he had been with the Eagles, drafted by the Eagles by Andy Reed, had been traded away to the Rams. He spends some time in St. Louis, doesn't really do anything there, gets released. Andy Reed brings him back to the Chiefs, but he finds his way back to the Eagles as a backup, and now he is our only hope. But Benny the Speaking of a New Hope. Speaking of last episode, yeah, 100%. Nick Foles was the only hope they had. Especially after such a crazy season. I mean, Carson Wentz was playing unbelievable ball. The best. Best ball he has ever played was played in that season. And so for the Eagles to lose that that lead quarterback that they knew could get the job done just devastating. Nick Foles had done he had won them games in the past. He comes out, they have a rocky couple of games. Rocky end of the season. Very rocky end of the season. But they still obviously they clinched the the first season, so they're in the playoffs. And on the Patriots side, I mean again, they're under Tom Brady. So I mean they're they're rolling. I think they finished, what, 13 and 13 and 3 as well. And it that's the same with the Eagles. They end up going 13 and 3 to end the regular season. Um and so we we get to the playoffs. And again, because Nick Foles is leading that ship, there's not a lot of confidence going in. But guess what? First round against the Falcons, they get the they get the job done. Even as the underdogs, they take it to heart. The underdog mentality lives well in in the Philadelphia mindset. I mean, Rocky Balboa is an under deck, underdog story, and they embrace that fully. And so it they go on to win against the Falcons, and I didn't realize, Ben, just in my brain, that this was the the Lane Johnson dog mask game. That is where that was born, and I had no idea.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I didn't uh I didn't remember that or recall that, but that really took some steam. Um, but I had mentioned this to you. I didn't realize that that first game in the playoffs in the divisional round, because they received the bye for being the one seed. I didn't realize that it was that close of a matchup against the Falcons. So it could have been, you know, end of story.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, end of story, but they end up pulling it out. Um, and again, they weren't even favored at home to win that game in the first place. There was that little confidence that Nick Foles could be that guy in the playoffs. Yes. But they get it done, they move on to the NFC Championship to go up against the Vikings, and the Vikings made the number one cardinal sin that you do not do in Philly, and that is mess with the Rocky Balboa statue. Yeah, you you do not mess with the Rocky Balboa statue, they dress him up in Viking purple and yellow, and uh Benny, the Eagles demolish the Vikings.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, honestly, I think that might be why they went into the Super Bowl with such a vigor and a like uh just a lightning in a bottle type offense was that Minnesota win. They were fired up and then just let loose.
SPEAKER_03Nick Foles went off. Like he he was throwing the ball and he was feeling great. Like he 38 to 7 just diced the Vikings.
SPEAKER_01And that gets them to the Super Bowl.
SPEAKER_02The Super Bowl. I I will say too, watching this, I actually did not know this going in. And obviously, when Carson Wentz went down, they were interviewing all these Philly people, and like even you know, some of the players that we'll talk about here in a minute that were being interviewed throughout the dock, they were like, Did you think when Carson went down we had a chance? And they were all joking about what the media was saying, nobody gave him a shot, and then all the Philly people were like, Ah, there it goes. Of course, like we are we are screwed. Like, this happens to us every time we have a glimmer of hope or a chance at a championship. I didn't know that they had not won a Super Bowl.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that was very first.
SPEAKER_02I did not know that, and so that was actually a very interesting piece of the puzzle. Um, that they've had a fun past decade.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and on yeah, they they really have. They the Eagles fandom has really picked up in my later half of life. Um it has been an absolute blast uh to to be a fan. And it, I mean, honestly, there's there's kind of a history there because the Eagles lost to the Pats in 2005. Right when they had a shot at a Super Bowl. Um and I mean for the the Patriots coming into the Super Bowl, they're obviously the juggernaut, like you said, it was a Bill Belichick and Tom Brady dynasty era. This was a a big I mean they're we're in the middle of it. This was the fifth appearance in, or I mean, how many? Eighth appearance in 17 seasons or something like that in the in the Super Bowl. Like, I mean, they're just dominating five wins at this point, right? I think five Super Bowls.
SPEAKER_02Yep, five Super Bowls, five out of seven was what they had won up to this point. Um, losing both to the New York Giants. So the Philadelphia East, the NFC East.
SPEAKER_03NFC East was the Kryptonite East. Absolute Kryptonite. That's a good point, Benny. Um, but that kind of sets the stage for this Super Bowl. And you already mentioned a little bit, we talked Nick Foles, obviously, Nick Foles against Tom Brady. If that doesn't just reflect, and they I love that they highlighted this in the doc, but if that's not the Rocky Ball Bull versus Apollo Creed setup, I mean that that is exactly what it is. And Nick knew he's like, I don't like this doesn't feel real. Um, but then you have Doug Peterson as head coach. These are kind of your your main key players to the Philly special. Right. Corey Clement at running back, he's a backup guy. He's not even uh their their main threat, and he was an undrafted free agent, hometown guy of Philly, which I absolutely love. Yeah, insane. Trey Burton tight end again backup and uh uh come to find out high school QB.
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Pelps. Before the Kelsey uh stardom absolutely exploded, you have Jason Kelsey in at center. Those are kind of our our main five players and the main five people that are followed in this documentary. Um but by anyways, we get into the game again, it's back and forth. Back and forth, back and forth. And we already said it, but this was an offensive affair through the entire game. I mean 8,151 total yards of offense when all said and done. The most total offense of any Super Bowl performance that that has ever been had.
SPEAKER_01Just crazy. Absolutely crazy.
SPEAKER_02I mean, 505 yards from Tom Brady is crazy. I was actually looking into this a little bit, just speaking of how offensive the game was, how crazy the game was, and they were emphasizing how the Philly special was the key play as to why they won. And to be honest with you, this shows you that I haven't really gone back and like I don't care to watch the highlights because I know what happened and didn't watch the game live. I didn't realize that the Philly special was at right before halftime. Halftime. I was just gonna say that, Benny. I didn't know that, and looking at the game, the Patriots took the lead in the third quarter. Uh excuse me, in the at the beginning of the fourth quarter. So with nine and almost about nine and a half minutes left, Patriots take the lead.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and I think that's what's so interesting about the Philly special is it's given so much love. Because yeah, it's it's back and forth, back and forth. Um but really I think the the momentum gained by the Philly special, because it what it is is at the end of the second quarter, it's fourth and goal. And my brainchild, this won the game in my brain. In the in my memory bank, this was the game that this was the last play of the game. I did not realize it was at halftime. Just in my in my brain child, it was the the final play. Uh but no, it's the second quarter, um, fourth and goal.
SPEAKER_02Still a lot of ball to be played.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, tons of ball to be played. And it um at the moment it was 15 to 12. Right? So I really the the Eagles have been stopped a couple times, been held to just a field goal. They were they get the ball back with a two-minute drill, again, drive it to that fourth and goal, they're on the one-yard line, and uh there's a they're about to to run the play, but they luckily have a bunch of timeouts, so Doug Peterson calls timeout. And uh Nick Foles runs over, and I love how they're talking about how Doug Peterson's hearing all the ideas, he's trying to find the right play. He didn't know what he was gonna call, uh, but just knew that what they had wasn't gonna work. And then Nick Foles goes up and he's like, You want Philly Philly? Yeah, let's do it. It's the best. I mean, it's the best he doesn't even call it the right play. It's the best part. And Doug knows.
SPEAKER_02He's like, Yeah, let's do it. And you can see it in Doug's face, and I love how Jason Kelsey called that out. He's like, he didn't even call it the right name. And yet Doug literally looked at him and was like, Yeah, let's do it. You're right.
SPEAKER_03He just knew.
SPEAKER_02He just knew that it was. And Frank Reich, you know, said to him, He's like, you know, did you call that play? He's like, no, Nick didn't. He's like, no. Nick suggested it, but you called it. And so I love I didn't realize this either, but they got a statue.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that Philly Philly statue's pretty sweet.
SPEAKER_02That's that's really, really awesome. And and it and I think it goes to show as you're watching, I mean, they make a 30 for 30 about it. Corey Clement, the leading receiver, is an undrafted guy, played three years, just three years for the Eagles, really hasn't done anything else. Yeah, and and so he had an incredible Super Bowl. Nick Foles is a legend in Philly forever.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. You've got never have to, I mean, he's retired now, but he didn't have to do anything else. He went down on history for this performance.
SPEAKER_02I mean, that's that's it, right? When you beat a 505-yard game by Tom Brady and three touchdowns, 152 yards from Mammandola, touchdowns from Gronkowski and Ben Hogan, and you've got this is actually interesting. No sacks by the Patriots defense. If you really look at from uh from a New England perspective, it's like I feel like we always, in looking at all the Super Bowls, we lost the games that we probably should have won talent-wise in the Super Bowls, and then we won some of the games we had no business winning. Like interesting. Like it's it's funny, but Philly literally ruined the middle of a three-year, a three-year-in-a-row win streak in the Super Bowl for the Patriots. So it's it's this is a big, big play. It's a big, big game, and more than just a game to these Philly fans.
SPEAKER_03And so fourth and one, they decide to call this Philly Philly. And the Philly special, he goes to the huddle, makes the play call. I love how Jason Kelsey initially was like, what the like, what are we what are we doing? But this is the play. It involves Nick Foles, the quarterback. He's gonna feint an audible, basically. So he he lines up, he motions for Clement to go into the pistol, and then uh as as soon as he's in the pistol, he uh starts moving to the line. Yeah, like you just said, Ben, kill, kill. Safety, safety. You know, he's he's making it look like he's audible and he gets over to Lane Johnson um as his uh uh far right tackle. Um, and he says, Lane, lane, he's shouting at the top of his lungs, and Lane Lane was the cue for Jason Kelsey to hike the ball. And uh hikes it to Clement. Clement gets the ball, he starts running it to field left if you're watching from behind him, pitches it to um Trey Burton. Trey Burton again, high school QB. And all the while Nick Foles, since he now had motioned out to the the right tackle spot, he has run a little uh route into the end zone, and Trey Burton, yeah. Trey Burton just floats it to Nick Foles, catches he catches the ball, touchdown Philly, they go in up to scores at halftime. And it's yeah, it is I mean, it's just so electric. The acting, being able to relive that moment, watching the documentary was just so fun because it is just an awesome, exciting play.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it I mean, super creative. The the guts to call play like that, trusting your quarterback, trusting his hands, trusting the snap. I think the most underrated thing was Jason Kelsey saying, and what Corey Clement was like, I'm way shorter than Nick Foles. What if this goes over the middle?
SPEAKER_03That height difference has to be two feet, is what it looks like. Like yeah, it's comparably it it is a drastic difference between because Nick Foles is what a six five, a healthy six five. Yeah, tall, tall guy for sure. Clements is maybe five eight. Yeah, five eight, five nine. And so big difference. I didn't even think about that being a major factor and player in the success of that play, and when you watch it back, it is high, like it's in his face. That snap. Um, because again, he's in the pistol, he's not under center by any means. They're they're back backed off a few yards. Um, another thing that I love though, Benny, again, this was a momentum swing, but I love that Nick Foles called out the fact that Patriots ran a very similar trick play where they roll Tom Brady out on a wheel route, but he missed it. Yeah. Like two series, two series prior um to them running the Philly special, Tom Brady drops it. And I love how Nick just again poking a little bit more at Tom Brady's like, hey, I appreciate you giving me the idea. Yeah. Oh man. I absolutely love that.
SPEAKER_02You already know how much Tom Brady probably just hates Nick Foles, dude.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's it's so good.
SPEAKER_02And he'll just build a whole for the rest of time. I mean, there are two quarterbacks on earth that can say, hey, I went up against Tom Brady in a Super Bowl and I came out on top, and that's Eli Manning and Nick Foles. Yeah. That's it. Seven out of ten times he won in those three one, you know, three games, only two quarterbacks did it. And obviously the defenses were good.
SPEAKER_03Nick Foles, the underdog of underdogs, who had basically been a uh not a very successful QB in the NFL by any means, but it becomes a legend and does what he needs to do when we need it at most. I'd love to see us throw as much as we were throwing in this 2018 NFL or Super Bowl team. But Benny, like you said, it goes back and forth at the two minutes, 21 seconds left. We're 38-33. The Eagles just have a five-point lead. Really, the Patriots have a chance to come back a couple times and steal this win. And then at the very end of the game, eight seconds left, they have the Hell Mary attempt at 41 and 33. Monkowski almost snatches it. Like he he was so close to getting that catch. But it it ultimately falls to the ground, and Tom Brady and the Patriots go down. Philly wins their very first Super Bowl.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, absolutely devastating for the Patriots and just an incredible um, you know, performance by the Eagles, and just looking at the like flow of the game and the missed opportunities. I mean, when Philly goes and scores when they go down 33 to 32, and the Patriots fumble. And it was that that you know, you talk about there's really two plays, and it's and it's your guy, Brandon Graham, who the one sack that that the you know the Eagles get on Tom, and he knocks the ball loose, forcing the fumble, the one blemish on the game for Tom. Yeah, huge play because you really think that the Patriots go down five, and with two twenty-one left, if they don't fumble, they don't have a better opportunity to go score.
SPEAKER_03Um it's yeah, 221's uh an eternity in in football. Like that's so much time.
SPEAKER_02I think they probably should have included Brandon Graham in there. You know, the Philly special is impressive, but let's do a Philly special and force fumble.
SPEAKER_03Brandon Graham forcing the fumble. That's a good point, Benny. I I'd almost forgotten about that, but that really that was that saved the game 100%.
SPEAKER_02And I mean, a lot of a lot of legends were born from that game, and probably you know, Jason Kelsey probably takes the cake from everyone as well as Nick Foles.
SPEAKER_03But I mean, obviously, Nick Foles will go down in Philly history, and as will Jason Kelsey. Uh, but yeah, watching we talked about this all a couple times. This really was the underdog battle. Bill Belchick to Doug Peterson. Doug Peterson wasn't even in the same conversation as far as the level of coach. He had been the head coach for the Philly since 2016, uh, did have a very rocky start, but obviously great 2017. They went seven and nine in 2016 and then go into this 2017 season to make it to the Super Bowl. Uh, but you're going against the juggernaut. Like that's that's huge. But Jason Kelly, Jason Kelsey talking about the underdog mentality in their Super Bowl celebration in his crazy, I don't even know what culture he was representing there. It feels very Russian to me, but just like his parade outfit.
SPEAKER_00Um, he's he's talking and he, I mean, he's like, hungry dogs run fast, and you know who the hungriest dog is? Philadelphia.
SPEAKER_03And it it's just so good. Like they had been counted out, they were the underdogs, they had the chip on the shoulder, they heard all the noise, but it just motivated them to do really, I think to your point, perform way above what maybe the expectation should have been going up against the Patriots.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I think that that was really a kick start for you know a team that and a general manager in Howie Roseman that ended up creating another team to win a Super Bowl. And so it's they got number two. You know, a great team, a great organization. I feel like watching, I told you this, I was like, it was kind of brutal. I mean, it's very Philly heavy beating the Patriots, and and so you know, sometimes I have to think to myself, I I count the Super Bowls on the fingers and realize okay, it it's okay to lose, to lose this one. But honestly, that team epitomized Philadelphia as a city, and it was cool to watch the documentary and really see that come to fruition. And kind of part of the reason it's like I love living in Salt Lake City, but could you imagine if, like, you know, if For a time, we got to actually be entrenched in the towns of the teens we love. If I lived in Boston, yeah, be part of in Philly, yeah, just to see, yeah, hey, this is the culture, this is the the city, it's it's the lifeblood. Um, they live and breathe it. That that was really cool to see, and I was I was happy that they ended up getting that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I I felt the same way. I love, I mean, when you go to Philly, it is true, go birds, everybody bleeds green. It that that is having visited last year for the first time, that is the vibe, and so I it was fun to especially for me, so thank you for letting me pick this as the first one. It's a fun one to see that more from the Philadelphia perspective. Um, but that is the Philly special. So if you're asked, it is one of the GOAT plays in history. It was a momentum swing, it really was just kind of a a giant bold, and you know ballsy call. We'll just say how it is. That is what it was.
SPEAKER_02Some big honest.
SPEAKER_03And it it paid off. Uh, but that yeah, that's Philly special. Philly Philly, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Let's do it. Do you want Philly Philly? Yeah, let's do it. The best. I absolutely love that. It's no, it's really cool. Great choice to start out with, and I'm excited to see what we can do next. I love this. This is a fun, different format. I know I'm sure we'll go-filled episode.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we had all the the goats today, and I think we'll find our vibe. I'm sure our better halves will have some feedback, hopefully, if they listen to this episode, on how we can talk and help everybody know more ball. But until then, Benny, what do we say to the people, dude?
SPEAKER_02Before I say what we always say to the people, I am gonna make an executive decision and give us both an honorable mention, a sixth man pick, if you will, in our GOAT drafts, and I will get Messi, you get Ronaldo from soccer.
SPEAKER_03Hey, deal. Six man, Ronaldo for me, Messi for you.
SPEAKER_02Soccer has to make an appearance. That was almost a bit egregious.
SPEAKER_03But no, I I I agree.
SPEAKER_02That's a that's a good six man. If you couldn't tell, that's been stewing in my brain for the past 20 minutes. Um, but with that being said, people, stay hydrated. Stay hydrated. Audio. See ya.
