through Baptist teachings, and uh last Sunday we began talking about uh predestination, providence, and permission. 00:01:38.159 --> 00:01:40.640 And last Sunday we talked about providence. 00:01:41.040 --> 00:01:45.040 This Sunday we are going to begin talking about predestination. 00:01:45.599 --> 00:02:02.079 And it is most likely going to take me more than one Sunday to do that, but I want to, with the Lord's help, do this in a very understandable way and uh not a hurried way, uh, hopefully to the Lord's glory, and please pray for me that I would get out of the way. 00:02:02.159 --> 00:02:10.960 Uh this morning we are going to be, and uh we're gonna primarily look at Ephesians chapter 1 and 2, and then uh we'll go from there. 00:02:11.120 --> 00:02:14.479 But I want to read for you before we get started this morning. 00:02:14.719 --> 00:02:19.120 I was reminded by one of the songs that we sang early on this morning. 00:02:19.360 --> 00:02:27.360 It's uh a song written, uh, it's in our small book, number 23, My Lord, I did not choose you. 00:02:28.319 --> 00:02:38.719 And the words read this way My Lord, I did not choose you, for that could never be. 00:02:39.680 --> 00:03:01.680 Uh, I'm not going to comment a whole lot on this song, but I do want to point a few things out is that the the writer of this psalm was born in 1789 and died in 1855, and the idea of predestination election is not um it's not exclusive to printed Baptists. 00:03:01.840 --> 00:03:05.840 We believe that it was very clearly taught in the Bible that the Apostle Paul taught it. 00:03:06.159 --> 00:03:16.479 And I just want you to see that here as a writer who lived and died in the 17 and 1800s, that here he is saying the same thing that we're saying today. 00:03:17.039 --> 00:03:23.039 My Lord, I did not choose you, for that could never be. 00:03:23.360 --> 00:03:24.960 Why does he say it that way? 00:03:25.680 --> 00:03:33.759 What he's basically conveying to us is in his understanding of the Bible, is that man is not able to choose God. 00:03:34.400 --> 00:03:37.280 That God had to intervene and choose man. 00:03:37.439 --> 00:03:41.599 So he says, My Lord, I did not choose you, for that could never be. 00:03:41.919 --> 00:03:47.840 My heart would still refuse you had you not chosen me. 00:03:48.080 --> 00:03:52.719 In other words, he's saying that this man understands his own sinfulness. 00:03:53.039 --> 00:03:54.879 He understands the depravity of man. 00:03:55.039 --> 00:04:03.120 He understands that without the Lord's intervention in his life, that 00:04:34.160 --> 00:04:50.879 See, the one of the distinguishing characteristics about what primitive Baptists believe and believers in grace believe is that we believe that lost men and women do not choose God of their own choice, of their own volition. 00:04:51.279 --> 00:05:14.079 We believe that God, through the Holy Spirit, is the one who chooses them first, bornes them again, literally saves them to heaven, and at that very point their minds are open to see and understand and hear the gospel and the word of God, and they're at that point then and only then they want to seek after God and follow God. 00:05:14.319 --> 00:05:17.120 But in their lost natural state, they didn't want to do that. 00:05:17.199 --> 00:05:21.519 So God had to do the transforming work of grace first. 00:05:21.680 --> 00:05:33.439 In other words, we believe that God burns again a person first and saves them to heaven ever before he has faith or wants to seek God or follow God. 00:05:33.600 --> 00:05:49.199 The songwriter goes on to say, unless your grace had called me and taught my opening mind, the world would have enthralled me to heavenly glories blind. 00:05:49.279 --> 00:05:59.600 He's saying, Lord, unless you dropped the scales off my eyes, I would have been so enticed by the world that I would have never wanted anything to do with you. 00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:06.959 My heart knows what's so beautiful about, you know, and some people get real sideways about the doctrines of grace and about predestination. 00:06:22.720 --> 00:06:29.519 I want to tell you this morning that, you know, the Bible talks about spiritual milk and it talks about spiritual meat. 00:06:29.839 --> 00:06:42.000 And when we talk about things like the gospel, about the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross, and about his great sacrifice, that, brothers and sisters, is the milk. 00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:46.319 That is the thing that is so nourishing to a babe in Christ. 00:06:46.480 --> 00:06:46.959 Amen? 00:06:47.120 --> 00:06:50.560 That we want to hear about the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:06:50.639 --> 00:06:57.279 That is the thing that someone who is just now, that their mind is literally being opened by the Lord. 00:06:57.439 --> 00:06:59.040 That's what they crave. 00:06:59.279 --> 00:07:12.639 And by the way, what you and I are talking about today, about how God actually works out the mechanics of those operations and salvation, what you and I are talking about today is meat. 00:07:12.959 --> 00:07:15.920 It is difficult for people to chew. 00:07:16.160 --> 00:07:31.680 Brothers and sisters, uh not only the Baptists, but many faiths and orders have struggled with the concepts in the Bible of God's electing grace, of God's predestination, of God choosing man and man not choosing God. 00:07:31.759 --> 00:07:41.839 And even the Apostle Paul, thousands of years ago, wrote about those that would be objectors to the idea that God is the one who is choosing us. 00:07:42.079 --> 00:07:44.240 So this is not something that's new. 00:07:44.480 --> 00:07:51.439 But I just want to be very clear and plain this morning that what we're talking about today, brothers and sisters, is meat. 00:07:51.600 --> 00:07:54.560 I mean, it is like steak, it is roast beef. 00:07:54.639 --> 00:07:56.240 And I don't mean that lightly. 00:07:56.319 --> 00:08:13.439 I say that to say that for a spiritual babe in Christ, if you were to full tilt and come and talk about all the mechanics of predestination election, that could actually be very off-putting and offend a little child of God who is not ready to eat spiritual meat. 00:08:13.680 --> 00:08:20.639 Now, brothers and sisters, you and I, again, I'm not claiming that you and I are some elevated or high or knowledgeable believers. 00:08:20.720 --> 00:08:21.920 I'm not saying that. 00:08:22.480 --> 00:08:29.360 You and I at this church are attempting to work through some of the doctrines of the faith. 00:08:29.680 --> 00:08:34.960 And the very doctrines of the faith are so very important, they are our foundation. 00:08:35.200 --> 00:08:42.639 You know, there's been a trend in the last, well, for a long time, that, well, you know, the that Jesus Christ really wasn't born of a virgin. 00:08:42.799 --> 00:08:45.440 You know, that, you know, you know, we believe that he was a good man. 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:52.720 Some people even believe that he was a savior, but I just can't logically understand that a man could be born of a virgin. 00:08:52.799 --> 00:08:53.919 That just can't be. 00:08:54.159 --> 00:09:02.000 And so some Christians, in their mind, they have reconciled the fact that, okay, well, I don't believe that Christ was born of a virgin, but yet I still believe he's a savior. 00:09:02.159 --> 00:09:05.200 Well, see, there's a tremendous problem with that. 00:09:05.519 --> 00:09:13.679 Because, see, we believe that the Bible clearly teaches that man inherits the sin nature through the line of Adam through the Father. 00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:27.039 And so, if Jesus Christ was born of man and of woman, then he would have inherited a sin nature from his father, and therefore he would have been condemned under that already. 00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:31.360 He would have had to spend all his time redeeming himself and not us. 00:09:31.679 --> 00:09:42.720 And so it is, in other words, the idea of a virgin birth, that is a point of doctrine that has to be established, that if that is untrue, then the foundation falls down. 00:09:42.960 --> 00:09:50.639 And so, again, what you and I are talking about this morning in predestination election, I willingly admit that this is not an easy subject. 00:09:50.799 --> 00:09:57.200 It's not easy to hear, and there's much contention of different Christians about what they believe about this. 00:09:57.360 --> 00:10:02.799 And so the Lord be our help this morning to understand what all this means. 00:10:03.200 --> 00:10:07.919 And so let's try not to use as much church language and more plain language. 00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:18.159 But I want you to see the hymn writer understands that I love the fact that he says, My heart knows none above you, for your rich grace I thirst. 00:10:18.399 --> 00:10:39.279 The word grace means the free, unearned, unmerited love and favor of God toward sinful man, and for the man who has been enlightened by the choosing and grace of God to see his sin, it is such a great blessing for him to say, Lord, I don't deserve you, but yet you chose me. 00:10:39.679 --> 00:10:41.519 And for that grace I thirst. 00:10:41.679 --> 00:10:48.240 He goes on to say, I know that if I love you, you must have loved me first. 00:10:48.879 --> 00:11:05.200 In other words, God, I would not have chosen you because I'm a sinner and I'm depraved, and my mind goes to the things of the world, but because you chose me, now and only now I love you. 00:11:05.440 --> 00:11:07.039 Look at the field and you had a hundred sheep, and you came back a day later, a week later, a month later, even five years later, and you're, you know, by that time your flock should have increased, right? that I'm kept by the strength of love divine. 00:13:16.960 --> 00:13:19.039 Kept by the grace of God, as it were. 00:13:19.279 --> 00:13:30.399 And when I wake in heaven, now this is key, and when I wake in heaven, all glory shall be thine. 00:13:30.960 --> 00:13:45.919 See, what a lot of people don't think about is this is that if I, as a preacher, had anything to do with people's salvation, true eternal salvation, then I would have something to brag about. 00:13:46.240 --> 00:13:51.039 Well, man, I you know what I went and preached at a giant rally, and there was 5,000 people there. 00:13:51.120 --> 00:13:51.679 And you know what? 00:13:51.759 --> 00:13:56.000 On that night, 758 people made a decision for the Lord. 00:13:56.159 --> 00:14:08.000 Look, as a result of my ministry and my works and my hard labor, 750 people came to know Christ and are now saved and bound for heaven as a result of my works. 00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:13.600 No, no man has ever done that except the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:14:13.919 --> 00:14:18.240 He is the only man that has ever saved anybody to heaven. 00:14:18.480 --> 00:14:37.919 Not a single preacher that is, not even the apostle Paul or Moses the lawgiver or Isaiah the great prophet, not a single one of those preachers of the word has ever saved a single human being to heaven. 00:14:38.240 --> 00:14:50.240 Now, have all of those men, and I hope myself, helped to timely save individuals here on earth from ignorance and a wayward life? 00:14:50.399 --> 00:14:55.039 Yes, I hope so, and I know for a fact that all those men in the Bible did. 00:14:55.200 --> 00:14:55.519 Okay? 00:14:56.240 --> 00:15:01.200 But they never saved anyone to heaven because that is not the operation of men. 00:15:01.279 --> 00:15:03.919 That is the in any given worship service, or while he was driving down the road in his car and listening to a gospel song or something like that? 00:15:28.159 --> 00:15:35.279 What about the young person, or even the old person who, for 50, 60, 70 years they've run from the Lord, quote unquote. 00:15:35.440 --> 00:15:41.039 And now all of a sudden they've decided to, quote unquote, choose Christ. 00:15:42.080 --> 00:15:55.519 Did that individual, that young person or that old person, did they, as a result of their choice, save themselves to heaven in immortal glory, i.e., saving themselves from hellfire? the young person in the church or the old person driving down the road listening to the gospel song, for the first time heard something that they had never heard before. 00:16:24.240 --> 00:16:24.720 Why? 00:16:24.960 --> 00:16:36.720 Because the Holy Spirit opened their mind and their heart and their soul and their eyes to have the spirit of faith and understanding, and then therefore they were the actual saving, regenerating, born-again work was done before they chose to have faith or to join the church or to confess the Lord. 00:16:55.039 --> 00:16:59.360 They were bound and saved for evangelist in the New Testament, was one of the greatest, and he was the one who wrote some of the doctrines of election with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. 00:17:57.920 --> 00:18:07.920 But see, you understand that the Apostle Paul, and we believe that we understand that evangelism is not saving man's souls to heaven. 00:18:08.160 --> 00:18:18.720 Instead, we believe that evangelism is bringing the gospel, the good news, the milk, to those whom the Lord is burning again. 00:18:18.960 --> 00:18:23.200 And then therefore they are the ones who can hear and respond to that. 00:18:23.440 --> 00:18:28.079 And then we want to come alongside of them and disciple them and help them walk with the Lord. 00:18:28.319 --> 00:18:29.920 But we didn't save them to heaven. 00:18:30.079 --> 00:18:40.079 We helped save them here on earth to walk with the Lord from their ignorance to save them out of following the world and instead of following Christ right here and right now. 00:18:40.400 so my point is this got this gospel songwriter says, and when I wake in heaven, all glory shall be thine. 00:19:03.759 --> 00:19:14.559 See, I didn't save anybody to heaven, and the sinner who chose 1. 00:19:37.359 --> 00:19:38.640 Ephesians chapter 1. 00:19:38.799 --> 00:19:47.279 There are, you know, there are passages of scripture that people like to avoid in the Bible. 00:19:47.599 --> 00:19:50.000 And there are passages of scriptures that we love. 00:19:50.400 --> 00:19:54.480 In Ephesians chapter 1 and Romans chapter 8 and 9. 00:19:54.720 --> 00:20:01.039 Some of these chapters are books of the Bible that some people don't really like to talk about a whole lot. 00:20:01.599 --> 00:20:07.599 But we want to talk about them, brothers and sisters, because all the word of God is profitable, right? 00:20:08.240 --> 00:20:13.359 For rebuke, for training and righteousness, you know, for our edification, every bit of it. 00:20:13.440 --> 00:20:14.559 It's all the word of God. 00:20:14.640 --> 00:20:16.640 So let's just dive into it. 00:20:16.880 --> 00:20:22.000 So I want you to understand, and we're going to try to keep all this in context. 00:20:22.240 --> 00:20:25.440 We're going to try to not hop around a lot today. 00:20:26.799 --> 00:20:33.839 So the Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Ephesian church. 00:20:34.160 --> 00:20:39.839 And in the Ephesian church, it was a mixture of Jews and Gentiles. 00:20:40.240 --> 00:20:42.799 And he is educating both of them. 00:20:43.200 --> 00:20:47.599 But some of the language in Ephesians is just that. 00:20:47.920 --> 00:20:50.400 It's talking about Jews and Gentiles. 00:20:50.640 --> 00:20:53.680 And so when we get to that point, we'll look at that too. 00:20:54.079 --> 00:21:00.480 But let's just dive right into Ephesians chapter 1, verse 1, and just see what it says. 00:21:01.200 --> 00:21:03.759 So Ephesians chapter 1, verse 1. 00:21:04.079 --> 00:21:15.920 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus. 00:21:16.640 --> 00:21:28.240 So in the first verse, we read and understand that Paul is telling the Ephesian church that, he said that he is an apostle by the will of God. 00:21:28.400 --> 00:21:29.759 What does that mean? 00:21:30.319 --> 00:21:41.440 That means that Paul himself is telling the Ephesians that I want you to understand that I'm an apostle by the will of God. 00:21:41.599 --> 00:21:42.640 What does that mean? 00:21:42.880 --> 00:21:52.240 It means that Paul did not choose of his own quote unquote free will and accord to be an apostle and preacher of Jesus Christ. 00:21:52.319 --> 00:21:53.440 Is that not right? 00:21:54.000 --> 00:21:59.759 Y'all will remember that Paul was a Pharisee who. 00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:26.160 And a very educated young man, and he was very zealous in the Jews' religion, and he was going on the Damascus road to actually imprison Christians and to persecute them, and he was specifically targeting those people who were followers of Jesus Christ because he saw Jesus Christ as an enemy to the Jewish religion. 00:22:26.480 --> 00:22:50.400 Someone who claimed to be the Messiah, and Paul thought that Jesus was doing harm to his beloved Jewish religion that he was so zealous in, and he was going to go and make sure that he got rid of those people that were that were propagating such terrible beliefs that Jesus is the Messiah and he's the Savior and things like that. 00:22:50.480 --> 00:22:54.319 And he wanted to stamp out all of that of the where Paul talks about God choosing people, Paul is actually not only talking about that God chose him to be an apostle, and that Paul wasn't signing up or seeking out that mission, but he's also
