Welcome back to Ask Velvet Podcast. I'm Velvet and today I want to talk about something that affects just about everybody. Cell phone bills. For most of us, our cell phone isn't just a phone anymore. It's how we communicate with family and friends, apply for jobs, check our bank accounts, pay bills, access transportation, stay connected on social media, and keep up with what's happening in the world. In today's society, having a phone is no longer a luxury. It's a necessity. But what happens when the cost of staying connected becomes so expensive that you have to choose between paying your bill and paying for other basic necessities? That's what I want to talk about today. One thing I've noticed about a lot of cell phone companies is how they get you to sign up. They'll advertise a great deal, and at first it sounds affordable. They'll tell you your monthly bill will be a certain price, but then the actual bill comes and suddenly there are extra fees, taxes, service charges, insurance charges, and other add-ons that weren't clearly emphasized when you signed up. Before you know it, the bill is much higher than what you expected. And if you're living on a limited budget, that becomes a serious problem. A lot of people are already trying to balance rent, utilities, groceries, transportation, and other everyday expenses. Then the phone bill comes due and you're left trying to figure out what gets paid first. Do you pay your electric bill? Do you pay do you buy groceries? Do you pay for transportation so you can get to work? Or do you pay your phone bill? The reality is your phone has become essential to everyday life. Without it, you can miss job opportunities, important calls, doctor's appointments, family emergencies, and countless other things that people depend on every day. And when the bill isn't paid on time, many companies charge reconnection fees after service is disconnected. Those fees add up quickly. Now you're not only trying to pay the original bill, you're also trying to pay extra just to get your service turned back on. For someone already struggling financially, that creates an even heavier burden. And I'll use myself as an example. I have T-Mobile, and this year I'm actually paying more for my phone service than I did in previous years. What's frustrating is that I've already paid off everything. My phone is paid off, my watch is paid off, my iPad is paid off. I don't owe anything on my equipment anymore. You would think once everything is paid off, your bill would go down. Instead, my bill is higher than it was when I was still paying on my devices. That's something I honestly don't understand. As a customer, it makes you question where all these extra charges are coming from and why the bill keeps increasing even after you've fulfilled your end of the agreement. And this isn't just something I'm talking about from a distance. It's something I deal with personally. Right now, I'm in a situation where I'm without phone service because I'm behind on my bill. The only reason I'm still able to do certain things is because I have access to Wi-Fi. But not everybody has that option. Without Wi-Fi, I'd be completely disconnected. I wouldn't be able to stay connected while on the move, access important services, or communicate the way most people need to throughout the day. And that's the reality for a lot of people. When your phone gets disconnected, you're not just losing a phone. You're losing access to something that has become essential for everyday living. You're suddenly at a disadvantage all because the cost of staying connected has become more than you can afford at that moment. That's why this issue hits close to home for me. I'm not just talking about a bill. I'm talking about something that directly affects people's ability to communicate, work, access opportunities, and stay connected to the world around them. And what makes it even more frustrating is that it can feel like these companies don't always consider the financial burden being placed on customers. Every year prices go up while people's incomes stay the same or get tighter. A lot of customers feel trapped. They've been with the same company for years. They've invested in their devices and service plans. And by the time they realize their bill is too expensive, switching providers can feel complicated or out of reach. Customers should be able to shop around and choose what works best for their budget without feeling stuck. Companies should earn loyalty through fair pricing and transparency, not because people feel they have no other choice. Meanwhile, these companies continue making millions and billions of dollars. I'm not saying businesses shouldn't make money. Every business exists to make a profit, but there needs to be more honesty and transparency around pricing. People deserve to know exactly what they're signing up for. They deserve straightforward billing without surprises. And they deserve access to communication services that don't force them to choose between staying connected and meeting other basic needs. Because in today's world, having a phone shouldn't feel like a luxury. It should be a necessity. At the end of the day, people shouldn't have to choose between paying their phone bill, keeping the lights on, putting food on the table, or getting where they need to go. But for many people living paycheck to paycheck, those are the choices they're forced to make every single month. And that's a problem that deserves more attention than it gets.
