Welcome to the Ask Velvet Podcast. From the porch to the couch, come on in and stay. Real talk, real life. Just telling it my way. Nell y'all, can we please have a conversation about the foolishness I keep hearing on social media? Every time I open my phone, somebody's on there telling these young women, girl, if he can't, if he ain't or can't be buying you a Louis Vuitton purse, taking you to a five-star restaurant and flying you to Dubai, he ain't the one. Baby, Dubai ain't gonna cut my grass. That Louis Vuitton purse bag, whatever you want to call it, ain't gonna trim these bushes. And that steak dinner ain't gonna fix the loose cabinet doors in my kitchen. So today, let's talk about what really impresses me now that I'm older. Because trust me, my priorities have changed. Now don't get me wrong, I like a nice dinner just like anybody else. If somebody wants to take me out for a good meal, I'm not about to argue with them. But after we finish eating, guess what? I'm coming right back home and this grass that's looking at me, the bushes are sitting there saying, Well, you had fun. Now what? See, social media got folks thinking romance is buying expensive purses. Listen, if you really want to make my heart skip a beat, pull up with a lawnmower. Matter of fact, don't even text me and say, good morning beautiful. Text me and say, I bought my weed eater. Now you've got my attention. Forget the flowers, bring hedge trimmers, forget the designer belt, bring a toolbox. Forget buy me a purse, fix the screen door that's been getting on my nerves for six months. Now that is romantic. You know what's funny? When I was younger, I might have gotten excited over a fancy date. Now I'm looking out the window thinking Hmm, I wonder if he knows how to replace a ceiling fan. Some of y'all are checking to see if he's driving a luxury car. I'm trying to find out if he knows how to change a faucet. We're not the same. Now, before somebody jumps in the comments, no, I'm not saying every man has to know construction. Everybody has different talents. But let me tell you something. If I meet a man and he tells me he's an electrician, I'm listening a little closer. If he says he's a carpenter, oh keep talking. If he says he's a plumber, sir, would you like something to drink? See, that's because life teaches you what's valuable. After that vacation is over, the grass is still growing, after those Instagram pictures get all the likes, the bushes are still getting taller. After that designer purse gets put in the closet, that leaky faucet is still leaking. I'm living in the real world. You know what really says I care about you. Helping make somebody's life easier. That's love. That's partnership, that's teamwork, and let's be honest, nothing says I'm serious about you. Like somebody sweating in your yard on a Saturday afternoon. If he's out there cutting grass in 95 degree weather, baby, that's commitment. And after he's finished, I'll be like, come, come, come, I wash you up. I wash you up and feed you. Come on. So here's my opinion. Everybody has different things they value in a relationship. And that's okay. If designer bags make you happy, wonderful. If traveling is your thing, enjoy it. But me, at this stage of my life, come help me with something that actually needs to be done. Help me knock something off my to-do list. Help me keep my home looking nice. Because after all these years, I've learned something. Acts of service will impress me a whole lot faster than acts of spending. Now I want to hear from all of you. Be honest. What's something that impressed you when you were twenty five? That doesn't impress you anymore. Leave me a comment. Let's laugh about it together. Until next time, this is Ask Velvet reminding you that the older you get, romance starts looking a whole lot like somebody saying, Don't worry, I already cut the grass. Now that's attractive. Thank you for listening to the Ask Velvet podcast. From the porch to the couch. Come on in and stay. Take care of yourselves. Take care of each other. And I'll see you in the next episode.
