Nothing Is Guaranteed: The Life Lessons Every Job Taught Me

Welcome back to the Ask Velvet Podcast. From the porch to the couch, come on in and stay. Real talk real life. Just telling it my way. I'm your host, Velvet, and today I want to talk about some life lessons that I've been learning every single day. These aren't lessons I learned from reading a book or sitting in a classroom. These are lessons I've learned by living life. Working different jobs, going through struggles, trusting God, and paying attention to what each season has been trying to teach me. One thing I know for sure is this nothing in life is guaranteed. Not your job, not your paycheck, not tomorrow. Life can change with one phone call, one email, or one conversation. While we can't control everything that happens to us, we can control how we respond. And I've learned that every season of life, whether it's joyful or difficult, has something to teach us. One of the greatest lessons I'm learning is that being employed is not a guarantee. No matter how hard you work, how loyal you are, or how much of yourself you give to a company, employment can change in an instant. Companies restructure, budgets change, temporary assignments come to an end, and positions are eliminated. Those decisions aren't always a reflection of your value or your work ethic. Sometimes that's just the reality of business. Because of that, I've stopped looking at every job as a permanent destination. Instead, I see every job as a lesson. Every place I've worked has taught me something valuable. Some jobs taught me new skills. Others taught me patience, professionalism, resilience, and how to work with different personalities. Some taught me what I wanted in a workplace, while others taught me exactly what I didn't want. Every opportunity every employment, every employment opportunity has prepared me for the next chapter of my life. This most recent temporary assignment taught me lessons I never expected to learn. One lesson had nothing to do with the work itself. It taught me about home ownership and just how expensive condominium living can be. Talking with residents and seeing firsthand what comes with owning a condo opened my eyes. Between mortgage payments, condo fees, insurance maintenance, and unexpected expenses, I realized that owning a condominium is a much bigger financial commitment than many people realize. It also taught me something about homeowners association. Now, I understand that an HOA works well for a lot of people, and I respect that. But after what I learned, I realized it's probably not for me. I like having a little more freedom and I don't think I want to live with additional rules, restrictions, and fees. That was another unexpected lesson I walked away with. Then there was another lesson that really surprised me. I learned that if you drop your keys down an elevator shaft in an apartment or condominium building, getting them back can be expensive. Yeah. I learned that it could cost you five hundred and six dollars. That is what one elevator company is charging when you call and need keys retrieved. But anyway, I have digressed now back to the regular schedule program. That was definitely a lesson I wasn't expecting to learn. It taught me to be a whole lot more careful whenever I'm standing near an elevator with my keys in my hand. Sometimes one small accident can turn into a very expensive problem. When I found out how much it could cost just to retrieve keys from an elevator shaft, all I could do was shake my head and laugh. I thought to myself, now that's one mistake I don't ever want to make. And I couldn't help but think, those elevator companies are making some good money. But hey, that's their business and that's neither here nor there. The point is that every job teaches you something. Sometimes the lesson is about your career, sometimes it's about finances, sometimes it's about people, sometimes it's about housing. And sometimes it's something as simple as remembering to hold on tight to your keys when you're near an elevator. Recently, I was laid off from my temporary assignment. And honestly, I'm okay. I'm not angry, I'm not bitter, I'm not discouraged. Instead, I choose to see it differently. I see it as another reminder that employment is temporary, but purpose can last much longer. This experience showed me that I'm getting closer to my goal of becoming a successful podcaster and blogger. Every setback has pushed me to spend more time building something that belongs to me. Every challenge has reminded me why I started this journey. I truly believe it's important to build something of your own while you're working for someone else. Whether that's a podcast, a blog, writing books, creating content, starting a business, or pursuing another dream. You're creating something that no one can simply take away because a temporary assignment ends. I also want to give credit where it's due. One thing I genuinely appreciate about this employer was how they handled the end of my assignment. They didn't wait until the last minute. They contacted my temp agency, and my temp agency let me know two days before my assignment ended. To me, that showed professionalism, it showed respect, it gave me time to prepare mentally, think about my next steps, and start planning instead of being completely caught off guard. Not every employer handles situations that way, so I wanted to acknowledge that. Even though my assignment ended, I don't walk away with resentment. I walk away with gratitude, I walk away with experience, I walk away with wisdom, and I walk away with another lesson. Today, I'm still writing, I'm still recording, I'm still creating, I'm still believing. I truly believe that in time my podcast and my blog can provide the financial stability I'm working toward. I know it won't happen overnight. I know it will take consistency, patience, learning, and hard work. Every podcast episode I record is another step. Every blog post I publish is another step. Every listener who presses play is another blessing. Every reader who visits my blog is another opportunity to connect with someone. I'm building something one episode at a time, one blog post at a time, one lesson at a time, and I trust that God is leading me exactly where I'm supposed to be. Sometimes we think a closed door means we've failed. But maybe that closed door is simply pointing us toward the one we're supposed to walk through. Sometimes a layoff isn't the end of your story. Sometimes it's the beginning of a brand new chapter. As I leave you today, I want you to remember this. Nothing in life is guaranteed. Jobs come and go, seasons change, plans change, but your ability to learn, grow, and keep moving forward is something no one can take away from you. Learn something from every experience. Find the lesson in every season. Don't allow disappointment to steal your purpose. Keep investing in yourself, keep building your dreams, keep trusting God.
