SPEAKER_01

Welcome to the Trevor Buck Podcast, episode 48. And uh today's sponsor is Coal Mark Landscaping from Minnesota. They serve Lakeville, Rosemount, Farmington, Apple Valley, and the South Suburbs. Welcome, Jack. How are you doing today?

unknown

Good, how are you?

SPEAKER_01

Good. Okay, so tell me uh what how old are you? You're in high school.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm a senior. I'm 18 years old.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, and how long have you been doing your coal mark landscaping business?

SPEAKER_00

Um, I started it my sophomore year, so we're going on to our third year of operations. Um yeah, so I think I was around 16. It's right when I got my license and got a car.

SPEAKER_01

And how'd you get into it? This is awesome.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so um I had a buddy who was our lacrosse captain who he had his own um landscaping company, shout out RNA landscaping from Rosemount.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, but so me and my buddy Chris Collins Collins, uh, shout out to him too. Um we couldn't find a job, which was basically what's going on. So we were applying, you know, golf courses, some summer jobs, and we were like, just couldn't couldn't get an interview. Yeah. Um both our dads uh run their own businesses. So we were like, you know what? Why don't we just start a landscaping company, um, do some mowing? Um so we started it up, um, and yeah, it's been smooth since then.

SPEAKER_01

I'm super proud of you, and obviously you're a very mature young man, and that's awesome. And what made you think, okay, so how I discovered you was shouting out your company name during the high school hockey tournament. Was that pre-planned or was that just off the cuff?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that was pre-planned. Um I got the um inspiration from this guy who used to play, um, so I play lacrosse. Okay. And this guy, um, a couple years older than me. Um, we played for the same club. Um, shout out Frank Smoan. He did it first. Um, so he did it, and I was like, man, that's hilarious. He he went viral. Um, and then I guess, you know, somehow, some way, ended up starting my own company, and uh yeah, I was like, I mean, I have to do it.

SPEAKER_01

That is awesome. That was classic. So, how many other podcasts have been hitting you up? I'm I'm stoked that you jumped on ours before you jumped on Spit and Chiclets.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, just you guys now, yeah. Um, but got some publicity from uh Sports Center and then Freezer Tarps. Awesome potion there as well. Yeah, it's pretty cool.

SPEAKER_01

I love it. Okay, so tell me about your services that you provide. Are you just mowing and blowing and trimming, or are you diving into like irrigation and other services or mulch or uh bark dust? Or what do you all provide for folks that are listening to?

SPEAKER_00

Um we do a lot of mowing, um, sort of just like you know, typical weekly services, mowing, uh trimming up bushes, um, picking weeds, all that, you know, the pretty uh simple things, but um we do do a lot of mulching, um removals of all types. Um we've got into some hardscapes, so uh we've made a couple walkways, we do rock, so pretty much anything the customer needs, we provide. Um we provide it well.

SPEAKER_01

So yeah, it's that's awesome. And is that uh do you do you look forward to continuing this, or is this something just through uh high school and then you're gonna go off to college and get education, or or do you have plans to keep this going?

SPEAKER_00

Um I would say for for us it's you it's a pretty seasonal job, especially being in Minnesota.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um but yeah, I'm going off to college next year.

SPEAKER_01

So where are you where are you going to college at?

SPEAKER_00

Um Kenyan College. I'm committed for lacrosse. Nice.

SPEAKER_01

Nice. That is awesome. Congratulations. I'm very proud of you. Thank you. And uh so tell us uh I I'm from Washington on the West Coast. This podcast started with another fellow from Michigan, but um, so when is the lacrosse season? Is that spring?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we start up, I think trials are March 30th. So we got about two weeks, three weeks until we start up, but it's pretty short. Shortest season in Minnesota, but um, it's fun.

SPEAKER_01

Hey, lacrosse is awesome. That's that's a cool sport. So where is your college located at? You say uh Kenya college?

SPEAKER_00

Uh Kenyan. Kenya College. It's out in Ohio. Um it's about I think it's it's an hour away from Columbus, but yeah, I'm super excited. I actually got a couple guys um that are from Washington that are in my commitment class.

SPEAKER_01

Super sick. And uh and lacrosse is growing. Is it a big uh big sport in Minnesota?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's pretty big, I would say. It's definitely growing. Not as big as the East Coast, but it's getting there. It's a great game.

SPEAKER_01

It is. Lacrosse is awesome. I love it. So I want to talk about this. What was playing in the the high school hockey tournament like one of the sickest things ever?

SPEAKER_00

Dude, that was one of the dopest things I've ever done in my entire life. Um, I don't think I'll ever forget it. Um it was a great experience. I mean, just getting to play like at such a I mean, it's the state of hockey, so you know, you're playing You're playing in like pretty much the biggest like atmosphere, you know, in hockey. You're playing against like the top teams in the state um in front of like, I don't know, I think one of our games had like 20,000 people. So it was crazy. Um it was super fun. Uh the staff at well, I guess they call it the Grand Casino now, the staff that they were they're amazing, they treated us well, and it was just it's an experience I'll never forget for sure.

SPEAKER_01

So, and for those listening, we have listeners across the the whole world, but so this is high school hockey tournament, and they're selling out a National Hockey League arena to watch these games.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, dude, it's it's it's insane. I don't know. I mean, state of hockey, that's all you can say.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so we gotta jump into this. So we have some uh smack talkers from Michigan who think uh Michigan hockey is superior to Minnesota, but you gotta smack them down.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, it's a state of hockey. I mean, you've already seen it this year. We had uh, I think Minnetonka played their top school, whatever Detroit, Catholic Central, something like that. They beat them pretty handedly, so you can say our second best team be your best team.

SPEAKER_01

There you go. Take that. That's awesome.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Gain, I want to talk about Rosemont. You guys have some sick unis. You got the Michigan Buckets.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, dude, the Mishis are sick. Uh love those. I mean, growing up playing in Rosemont, you didn't get them at youth, but it's always like once you get to high school, you get to rock those, and they're totally they're sick, man.

SPEAKER_01

That is awesome. And did you grow up um playing on outdoor ranks?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah. I mean, I had one in my backyard. My dad started it with wood. Um, I think every one of my buddies, we all have some sort of backyard rink if it's either man-made or if it's uh on a lake, but yeah, I mean, do you know how it started?

SPEAKER_01

Do you know how cool that is? Because we have listeners from all over, and and most people don't get that experience. They grew up, I mean, for like right now, my closest rink is an hour away.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's it's it's super special. I mean, I just growing up, I had a get to lace on my skates, text my buddies to come over, and we would just play, and I mean, it's it's pretty surreal how like cool that is, and such like everyone does it. Even if my buddies who don't play hockey, they're all like, let's go out to the ODR and you know, rip, you know, it's it's fun.

SPEAKER_01

And uh one thing I want to talk to you about, so during the summer, um, are you uh lake life? Like m looks like uh Minnes summers in Minnesota are pretty epic. You're living on there's lakes everywhere.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, dude. Minnesota's awesome. I think it's like winters can be rough. I mean, I love the winter. Uh I love being outdoors, but the summers are it's a great place to live. The summers are great, you know. Um I I we don't I'm not on on the lake as much as I want to in the summer. But uh my cousins got a cabin up north, Grand Rapids area. Um so we try and go up there, but yeah, it's it's awesome. Um the lakes are awesome. You know, people in Minnesota, uh, Minnesota nice, so yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Minnesota nice, I like that. So are you uh you're are you a wild fan?

SPEAKER_00

For sure, man, 100%.

SPEAKER_01

You like that uh trade with uh Quinn coming over?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, dude. He's a great player, so I'm watching him on for Team USA, him and Jack Ripp.

SPEAKER_01

That's awesome. I love it. And uh I wanted to uh ask you something else. I I'm drawing a blank here, but um, so growing up, oh, oh, I I remember what I was going with this. So Minnesota hockey in high school, do most of the players stick with their high school teams?

SPEAKER_00

Um I would say so. I think there's a little bit of uh um thing now with private schools.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um people going, I mean, there's for us, there's a bit of a drawback. There's SCA sometimes takes a couple of our guys, um, there's a couple Rosemont dudes on that team, but you don't I would say for those guys going over there, you know, sometimes it's not always for hockey. Okay, maybe like you want you want that private school education.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay, okay. And and I and I respect that. But uh is there much talk in uh I I grew up on the West Coast here, so uh we we grew up watching the the Western leaguers, and I remember years ago there was a fella or a couple fellas that came out of Minnesota to come play juniors, but do do kids think about going leaving home and playing junior hockey, or is it mostly staying and playing high school or private schools there?

SPEAKER_00

Um, I mean it's definitely a thing. Um, but I'm talking about I guess the Moorhead, Moorhead team that won. Yep, they had kids that I think they're thinking about leaving. A couple like their best guys, they um they were gone before playing juniors, I think, in the youth show and the dub. Um, but they all came back, and I think that's like the special thing about Minnesota hockey is everyone just like you know, you grow up playing for your city if it's youth. Like for me, I always played Rosemont um growing up since I was little. And I think that's sort of the same for everyone else. You sort of grow up playing for your team, um, trying to get to that high school level. Um, and I think it's just like so special that you know kids usually do come back and they play during the high school season because there's really nothing else like it playing, getting to play for your city, your school, um, and then I guess like getting the chance to play in the state tournament for your school and reper.

SPEAKER_01

Caitan, you guys uh you guys went to overtime, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, two of them. Unfortunately, we lost to Minnetonka, but um we almost had them.

SPEAKER_01

But dude, what what a game. Okay, now so is Minnetonka closer to the cities than Rosemont?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, they're about I would say probably like 45 minutes from us. Okay. Um, but they're definitely closer to the cities. Um yeah, they're yeah, they're they're closer.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. No, no, that's awesome. But um, no, is there uh smack talk within the states as as far as where you guys are from? Friendly, of course, because hockey guys are great, but uh depending on your areas.

SPEAKER_00

Um, I mean, there's definitely smack talk, I guess it's like Rosewell's got a pretty good bar stool. So there's some good chirps going out to the schools. Yeah, they're they're they're a northern team, but they got they they got I mean they won. So those guys back.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely, props. And there was some uh there was some crazy hairdoes this year.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, definitely. I think Rosemont probably won it though, I would say.

SPEAKER_01

So did your whole team go peroxide?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we all b okay.

SPEAKER_01

So how did you uh who who who made that call?

SPEAKER_00

Um, I mean, well, we pretty much Rosemont's never been. We went, I don't know, what is it, 34 years ago, but that was some weird thing. It was like we were class double ed, but we played in the A bracket. Okay. So no one really counts it. So I guess for us, it's our first time. We're like, we're not not gonna bleach our hair. It's like the first time we're going to be.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay, that's awesome. That is awesome. And I had TJ Thomas on from uh he won a state championship with Hibbian, and he kind of claims that his his team started this whole hair thing. So we'll we'll we'll have to uh check the facts here, but that's awesome.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um I think the real the real guy would be uh TJ Oshi.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, yeah. I'm I'm gonna have to get uh TJ Thomas back on to see if uh because I I knew t I knew uh Oshi started it too, so we'll have to see, but that's awesome. Proud of you guys for doing that. That's awesome.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was sick.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. So uh are they gonna uh put out that uh the hockey hair YouTube video again this year?

SPEAKER_00

I would assume so. Um I wonder who get it, but I think overall, best team was definitely Rosemont. Um we went with the bleach, some guys got some bullets.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, that's we got some good lettuce. Yeah, you got good lettuce. I love it. So uh so you have a couple more months of school and then you're uh sticking around doing landscaping this summer and then you take off in the fall and go play lacrosse?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean that's that's the plan, unless something changes, but yeah, you're gonna grind out the rest of school and then you know, and enjoy the last bit of being a kid until college happens and then go from there.

SPEAKER_01

You're you're growing up. What um what position did you play on your team this year? On the hockey team.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, uh so it's kind of I guess I sort of play all over this year. I sort of had to play the role of sort of you know, playing where coach wants.

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

Um so I started out at center at the start of the year, first couple games. Then they threw me back at D for majority of the season. Um, and then once we got once we got to playoffs, Coach was kind of like, uh, we need you to we need you to go back to center and sort of play the role, you know. Um might not get in as much, but take some face-offs for the boys. Yeah. Um, and that's what I did, you know. If Coach needed me to go out there, win a draw, I did that and I got off, kind of like a Fogo in lacrosse, you could say. But yeah, I mean, it was it was a great year.

SPEAKER_01

That's awesome. Tell us about cu because I'm super interested in this, but what is a Fogo in lacrosse? A face-off guy?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, they call it face-off get off. So you pretty much just take the face off and then you get off the ice.

SPEAKER_01

Hey.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, that's kind of what I did. I sort of adopted that role on the hockey team, and yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. Kate, and when you're you when you're playing lacrosse, how many people are on your team?

SPEAKER_00

Uh, like on the field at once, or like on on on your side.

SPEAKER_01

Is it it's not like hockey like five on five, right?

SPEAKER_00

No, so there's there's like ten, it's ten people on the field on each team. Okay. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so you have ten, ten versus ten.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, and are there uh are there penalties in lacrosse? Like, does someone ever go to the penalty box?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, there yeah, there's there's penalty boxes.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I don't know. I'm just I'm learning.

SPEAKER_00

But um Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's a penalty box.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so with with ten people on each side, what are the positions like in lacrosse?

SPEAKER_00

So, uh down on offense, you know there's pretty much like it's kind of like hockey. There's I'd say instead of three zones, there's two. It's kind of a lot like soccer.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um, but there's like the there's the half half the or midline, I guess you could call it.

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

So on the offensive side, you have your attack men, and then there's the defense, and they can only stay on one side of the field, and then your your middies or your midfielders, they can cross. They can cross both both sides. Okay. Um but then you have yeah, so it's sort of like it's six on six, pretty much.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay. And when you're uh when you're playing in Minnesota, are you on a turf or natural grass mostly?

SPEAKER_00

Uh mostly uh turf. Depends. Some schools got nice grass.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

That's interesting. I want to talk about uh hockey gear in in high school. What what were the hot sticks this year? Was there certain sticks that guys were wanting to use or you know that that was a hot hot item?

SPEAKER_00

Ooh, uh good stick. Let me think here.

SPEAKER_01

Um What were you rocking?

SPEAKER_00

Uh I just had the tracer, kind of like that's sort of just stick I use. I'm not really like big into what stick I use. Whichever one, you know, I found around the house.

SPEAKER_01

Love that. That is awesome. I I love I love hearing that.

SPEAKER_00

I think a couple guys got like a white stick. I think I don't know what it's called, to be honest with you, but it was pretty sick.

SPEAKER_01

No, that that's awesome. I love hearing that because it's not about the gear. It's about, you know, having fun and and talent is talent. You could if someone's using an old wood stick, they'd still be awesome.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we definitely had some studs that could probably use a wood stick and store.

SPEAKER_01

You gotta uh shout out your captain. Who is captain of Rosemount?

SPEAKER_00

Uh we had three. So we had uh Sherman, Kate Sherman, Claftin, and McNeil. Those were our three our three leaders.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, and and do some of these fellows help you with your landscaping company?

SPEAKER_00

Uh unfortunately not, no. Um but uh definitely like my best buddies.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

What are your uh are your best buddies? Uh do they play hockey or w what are they into?

SPEAKER_00

Um I g yeah, I guess uh I got a good group of guys. Yep. Um uh I kind of we kind of play all play different sports, which is kind of cool, you know. We're not all sort of strict to one thing. No, that's awesome. Yeah, we got a couple hockey guys, couple a couple lax bros.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um a golfer. Okay, and then yeah, it's sort of sort of how it goes.

SPEAKER_01

Are you uh are you a golfer?

SPEAKER_00

Uh yeah. Golf is golf is fun in Minnesota, yeah. We all play.

SPEAKER_01

You got a lot of golf courses there. That's awesome.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's definitely the big thing in the summers.

SPEAKER_01

That's good. Okay, so do you have a um special uh promotion for your uh listeners this summer that want to hire Coal Mark landscaping?

SPEAKER_00

Well, I mean young minds, top-notch results.

SPEAKER_01

Love it. I love it. I love your tagline. How'd you come up with that?

SPEAKER_00

Uh, you know, just sitting down with my buddy thinking, like, you know what? What really is like our characteristic of our company? You know, we're young, young guys, uh, we gotta make a name for ourselves. I mean there's a lot of landscaping companies that are usually run by older guys, you know, but you know, we're young, we're new, we sort of have that creative mind, so like we can get the job done not only quick, but creatively, you know, if you want something cool done to your house, um, just for the aesthetics, you know, people like to spice up their home, you know. No one likes to live a boring life.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So if you have those young minds, but we're not sloppy, you know. We we keep it strict in our performance in the landscaping um sense of things. So that's how we have those top-notch results. So we were like, you know what? Young minds, top-notch results, and sort of stuck, you know. It's kind of catchy, and yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's it's very catchy. I love it. I want to ask you this. So so when you go to a yard and you do the the trimming and the uh the blowing, and you might trim the do you haul off the the debris?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we uh take it all, throw it in the back of our truck or whatever car we have that day.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. Um and we just gotta bring it out to the dump and so so when they're left, it's clean, the stuff is out of sight, out of mind, and that's awesome. Love it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And everybody loves a nice, clean, sharp yard.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, you don't wanna have a dirty looking yard. That's not fun.

SPEAKER_01

That's awesome. Well, hey, I wanna thank you. I really, really appreciate you for jumping on and doing this. And uh don't hang up, I'm gonna talk to you offline. And uh you can like, follow, and subscribe the Trevor Buck Podcast on Apple and Spotify and give this episode a five star review. And this episode was edited and produced by Daisy Media. Thank you.
