We are aunties who talk sports where we go beyond the game and explore the intersection of sports and culture from a female, for our female fans, from a female point of view. I feel like today I'm really in auntie mode. I felt like I just... came in to record from doing artwork. But doing well this weekend, got to travel to Indiana, spend some time with my niece and celebrate her. Always just paying attention to what's happening in the leagues. But yeah, I'm doing well, enjoying summer closure at my day job. So we pretty much have most of July off. So looking to really relax, hopefully, and celebrate our birthdays this month. I thought you were going to Indiana to check on Caitlyn, see what was going on with the, you know, lower leg. The groin. Oh, no, the groin, yeah. Yeah, I was supposed to go to the game next week, but the conference was canceled, so I see you with your shop shirt. Yes. Yes, they're coming back. And I feel like – yeah, I know the WBL has the name, the Shock, Detroit Shock, but I feel like they're going to fold into our team and be the Shock again. They can't – You got to have the Detroit shot back. You got to. So the expansion, the WNBA expanded, and they announced that three new teams will be coming on in the next several years. You have Cleveland and Detroit and Philadelphia. So I think that's great. I just love it. But, you know, I, you know, first of all, I want to say happy New you know Bobby Bonilla Day oh you know that's how I wanted to start off so before we go all into the because I'm about to go into the WNBA but before we go into that I want to say happy Bobby Bonilla Day which is every July 1st Bobby Bonilla gets his his check his big million dollar check 1.2 million or no I think this year was like 1.9 but back in 2011, the New York Mets wanted to buy out $5.9 million of his contract. And they said, we're going to buy it out, but we're going to pay it over 25 years with 8% interest starting in 2011. And what happened was they were they had some investments with Bernie Madoff and so they thought it was gonna that they would be able to you know turn that investment into into you know that to be able to cover the 25 million so they Said, we'll give you 25 years, a million dollars, 25 years, 8% interest. And so every July 1st, Bobby Bonilla gets a fat check, which is not bad. So July 1st is officially Bobby Bonilla Day. But what I don't understand about that is, it seems like by now they would have paid the money back, the initial $5 million. 2035. No, it wound up being... being a million over, instead of giving you $5 million, we're going to give you $25 million. Oh, okay. Over the 25 years. A million dollars every year. I take that deal every day of the week. Yes, I will too. Every year you see him with this face smiling. I only know one other person that celebrates today and that's Shannon. I love it. He's always like, happy Bobby Bonilla. I can't pronounce it. It's one of my favorite stories. It's one of my favorite stories every year. Yeah, I have a question, but it's kind of off topic. But I saw because Allen Iverson turned 50 a couple of weeks ago. And I don't know if you keep seeing it, but it goes viral almost every year talking about how his agent structured, I guess, his contract. So he had a trust, I think. So when he turned 50, he was supposed to get the second half of his money. And so I don't feel like it's ever going to happen. been substantiated that that was really how it was structured but it definitely goes viral but it reminded me of that yeah I I like that. Yeah, it says his most notable contract was his lifetime deal with Reebok where he signed in 2001 and includes an annual salary of $800,000 and then a $32 million trust to be received at age 55. Yeah. Yeah. To me, that's the kind of representation that you want someone thinking about your long-term success, not just your short-term come up. Yeah, and he might have been fighting it when he was younger but he's he's so thankful now so yeah i love it for him i love stories like that because we hear so many stories um about um athletes that make a lot of money and they retire and have they're broke yeah yeah um You know, we'll talk a little bit more about that. Right. Coming up here. But I wanted to get back to the WNBA and the expansion scenes and the shock. And WNBA period, you know, the all-star list came out. Yes.

the captains were chosen and that is Caitlin Clark from Indiana Fever and Nafisa Collier from the Minnesota Lynx. The big story there was, one of the main stories that came out was Angel Reese not being named a starter. But if you look at the list, it was, I mean, there were players that, you know, you could say, okay, Angel Sheik. But the all-star votes are a lot of times just popularity contests, right? It's weighted. You have 50% the public vote. You have 25% coaches and players. And, you know, people were like, oh, they're hating. No, I mean, she'll be a reserve, but... you know, it doesn't, it doesn't take away. Her game is really evolving right now. She is balling out. She is balling out. She's the double, double queen. And I'll talk about how it double doubles. Well, the other thing is, uh, the all-star game was in Indianapolis. So home of the fever, home of Caitlin Clark. I don't, as we've talked about in the past I understand they want to grow the game they want to so whether or not it was legitimate or not she was going to be prominent you know because it's in her hometown but I do think I don't know who else made the team because I'm like I think she would have been prominent even if it wasn't yeah yeah But they, you know, one thing that made me upset, I get upset a lot about the WNBA narratives around it. She was the ninth highest vote getter for guards. And people were mad about that. Who? Kayla Clark. I'm sorry. Kayla Clark was. Oh, okay. And they were like, how could she be only ninth highest in the voting for among the players? They're just jealous. Kaylin Clark might not even be the top 10, top 15 guards in the WNBA. No. She's not even playing. She has not played. She's been on the bench more than she has not played this year. So stop this narrative about Dick Vitale came out and said that the players are jealous. I'm so sick of that. I'm sick of men, old men. Coming out. And young men. Old and young men. Everybody has something to say. Coming out talking about the players are jealous of Kaitlyn Clark. Nobody is jealous of Kaitlyn Clark. Kaitlyn Clark is not the best player in the WNBA. No, she's not. I mean, I think ultimately she has benefited from a strong social media presence. Lots of viral moments. But it's funny to me because even when you compare her to her her white counterparts right people were saying like oh well what about Paige right what about Sabrina right so it was like Caitlyn came on the scene and really kind of stole in some way Sabrina's thunder right because Sabrina was a sharpshooter deep range right friends with Steph Curry right the first WNBA player to have that like shootout so I don't know. I wish somebody would do an analysis of her fan base because I believe that her fan base really isn't They aren't avid sports fans. No, they're not. That's the whole thing. Right. They're not avid basketball fans. They came across her, gravitated toward her, but their knowledge of the game, I think, is just really minimal. Very. That analysis has been done over and over and over. Most of the responses to the comments are... Tell me you don't watch basketball without telling me you don't watch basketball. Right. Just by their comments. But, you know, that's, you know, whatever. You know, with the expansion, Sophie Cunningham, who ain't nobody checking for Sophie Cunningham. She went to Indiana to go be... Caitlyn Clark's muscle no no no not to be her muscle she went left she left Phoenix because of the scandal with her sleeping with the was it the coach or the owner but the but the but I won't say she went there for that, but that's all she's doing. That girl was running. Now she's running her mouth about the expansion team and saying that when you're doing expansion teams, you should consider where players want to go. Nobody wants to go to Detroit or Cleveland. I don't really... I'll condone what people say, shut up and dribble, but shut up and dribble because the expansion teams need to go to a city that has an NBA team. That's first and foremost. The WNBA teams do not make money. They operate in the red. So it's important to go to be a sister team you know, to an NBA team. And, you know, that's a big reason why these three cities were chosen. Detroit Shock, the Detroit Shock won three WNBA championships. If a team was to, if expansion is to happen, Detroit should be one of the first teams. So, Yeah, well, I mean, a part of it, too, is Mrs. Jamil Hill on Twitter was saying from her perspective, and there was a lot of debate about this, is the WNBA or the Detroit shot the most storied? WNBA franchise in history and so people were like no and she's like it's the only team right to come from like last place bottom of the league right to win in the championship still have the attendance record right still have the attendance record they had they won more than one championship I also think in that moment it was like you know, when Bill Lambert was the coach, it was almost like that NBA stamp, right? Because he was like an NBA great. So it was like this wonderful marriage, I think, of, you know, Detroit's the bad boy era, right? Kind of stamping, you know, the shock, but also, you know, Swing Cash, like she was one of the original WNBA baddies. You know, it just was a great time, you know, in that initial phase of the WNBA but I saw that Sophie was getting some heat online for her comments but again it's to me uh Just like I said, a few months ago, she was complaining about comments being made about her, the accusations about the affair with the CEO of the Mercury and the Suns. Now, here you go out here making all of these comments, but you didn't want the smoke, but now you're putting yourself back out here. Last week, she was making comments about- People, quote unquote, roughing up Caitlyn Clark. Like, just be quiet. Her only relevance has been Caitlyn Clark's muscle. She's not doing nothing. She's not doing nothing on the court. Just cut it out. Have you ever been to Detroit? How's somebody that plays in Indiana going, talk about Detroit? Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. No, I'm laughing. No, I want all the smoke right now. But Donovan Mitchell called her out, too. Basically, just letting her know she shouldn't be coming from Cleveland, I guess. Coming for it, but she also called it Cincinnati. So, yeah. And then she said... They should put teams in Miami. And Kansas City. Kansas City? Right. What is it? What? Nashville? No. Homegirl? Yeah. They don't have no NBA team. And even then, Gilbert told her, Sophie, you obviously haven't even been to Detroit or Cleveland. You should be supporting your Midwest sisters in this league and those two great cities that you're going to come to know and love very, very shortly. Yeah. And the city of Detroit clapped back, too. So, hey. Yeah. But yeah, enough about Sophie. Well, I mean, I think a part of it, and this is what the auntie takes, is just sometimes you got to be quiet, right? Be quiet. Do your research before you get out there and you make a comment that shows really how ignorant you are. Because for her to be a current NBA player means that she should understand the shock and the relevancy of Detroit having a team to the league to that. She doesn't. Right. And she doesn't. No, they don't care about the history. They really, a lot of the current players are I would say a number of them do not a lot of them do but a lot of them don't a lot of the younger I don't think she's young she look old well but to that point I did I do appreciate Angel and kind of her respect for the giants of the game when it's so funny because they call Candace Parker right CP3 too so I've seen some men online like oh why are they talking about Chris Paul did he retire oh my goodness But her, the viral moment, yeah, and ran over to her, gave her her props. Just, I think, farther in life, right? When you know your history, you respect your elders and kind of pay respects to people who've come before you. So, Sophie, you could learn something from Angel Reese. Detroit crawled so she could walk. That's true. That's true. You know, another story. Fresh off the press, I was working and watching Coco Gauff lose in the first round of Wimbledon today. It was very heartbreaking for me. This is her earliest exit in two years at Wimbledon, where she lost in the first round. Also, it's very hard to make the transition from clay, which she won, to grass, which is Wimbledon. And she was just saying she had 29 unforced errors and six double faults. And she just, you know, the second serve was giving her trouble. Along with the first serve. But she was saying that she's really got to make some adjustments. She knows it's kind of a mental thing playing on the grass. And she knows if she really wants to win at Wimbledon, she's got to make those adjustments. So, you know, I mentioned in the last episode or a couple episodes ago that she had lost in the first round of the Berlin Open. And I said, you know, is this a sign of things to come? What happened? She didn't have a you know having that quick turnaround from the French Open to the Wimbledon also was tough you know treacherous so well the other thing is I think she talked a little bit about like mentally you know being off so I think right as a young player you win you know a major and then it's like the tension of like wanting to celebrate the moment wanting to maybe relax a little bit and then you're going into another major so I think it's probably a part of maturity. It's like if you've been there before, you've done it, you're in the mindset of, let me just keep my head down and I'll celebrate at the end of the summer. Because you have Wimbledon and then a few weeks later, you're doing the US Open. I also think now just as fans, we can appreciate what it really takes when people are able to win every single one. Because I'm trying to think, Jokovic, didn't he do it in Nadal? They won all the slams in like a calendar year. It's been a couple of players to do. There's been some. I don't know. I'm not going to name names. Yeah. I'll have to look it up. nephew Elijah can you look that up right quick what tennis players have won all the slams in a calendar year because it is a mental toughness right you gotta say a very small statistic of people who have won the French Open and and the loss in the first round I mean you know there's a statistic out there for that too

mean I don't think we appreciate the change in surface as fans right to go from clay to grass to hard court it's not just about well it's weather too right I always laugh because every slam has like their own personality you know the US Open with the night games but it's like it's not just the competitor it's also the environment the actual surface and the weather right yeah yeah because i know they had to close the the the dome today for some weather issues but

you got it yeah so all the all the tennis players the tennis players who have won uh all slams in a calendar year The first person to do it was Don Budge. He was an American in 1938. Then Rod Laver, I don't know if I'm pronouncing that right, from Australia. He did it in 62 and 69. And all the female tennis players who have done it. Connelly from America was the first woman to do it in 1953. Then Margaret Court from Australia in 1970. And the last person, just person period to do it was Steffi Graf

from Germany in 1988. I thought there had been, so no men have done it since those other two. Oh, I thought Nadal. Nadal had done it. But yeah, that, you know, Those quick turnarounds, it's kind of like in the WNBA. Yeah. When you're in college, your season runs to March, and the draft is in May. That's right. I mean, before you know it, you're playing in the league. Yeah. The draft is probably in April, and then they play in May. And it's a very quick turnaround. They have very little time to adjust. And so, you know, athletes, hey, you have my respect, because... you know, it's the same thing. And then, you know, like you said, the difference between playing on court, I mean, on clay and grass and, you know, you having to adjust and mentally. And then after the French Open where she had to deal with controversy from, you know, those remarks and, you know, addressing that everywhere she went, you know, that messes with you. So, but shout out to Coco. She's, you know, she said, I would hate to think that I, can't win on grass. It's so young in my career. Like I'm, I'm not going to give up. So I, I, I appreciate her, um, emotional intelligence and, and you know what she said. Um, you know, we talked a little bit about, um, you know, I, again, I always talk about business and sports and we always, and we talked about, um, The financial, Bobby Bonilla Day, getting his money, and athletes having financial issues. And then we get the story of Malik Beasley. A couple of stories about Malik Beasley today, or this week. And the first one was that Malik Beasley, who plays for the Pistons, he was a free agent. You know, the day before free agency started, which I'm going to touch on that controversy. He's under investigation for gambling. The feds. Yeah, by the feds for gambling on basketball games. And, you know, I... If the feds are already invested, he's been under investigation for 18 months. But the story came out the day before free agency started. And that's significant because it was rumored that he was working out on a $3 million, $42 million deal with the Pistons. And that's significant because he was a role player who really... to stay on the team last year. Like, don't trade me. I really need to, you know, I really want to stay here. I really love him. He was a really, you know, popular player. And just to see this is so disheartening because a lot, you know, where there's, a lot of times in these investigations where there's smoke, there's fire. Like, if they're really looking. But I'm going to say two things. I can only hope that he didn't do it. But I also think that sports betting is way too prevalent and way in sports. Every commercial now is for is sports betting. Yeah. Yeah. All during the game. And like, you know, as a player, you should know better. Don't. just don't do it just don't even get involved in that you will get caught I think it's also interesting though because it seems like gambling is such a large part of professional athletes lives right you know you hear people talk about how they you know play card games on a plane they bet right dice so to me all of that is just like interwoven it's like are you really a gambler are you gonna bet on everything but not bet on the sports you play you know what I'm saying I just think to your point it's probably very prevalent and they investigate it but only you know really pursue charges for those that are getting a little bit out of hand but who are the other couple of players recently but it's a John Tate Porter he used to play and he's he played guilty it's the lesser known players that get this abnormal activity on them and then you start to track it it's so noticeable like who's betting on something about Malik Beasley nobody so You just, it sticks out like a sore thumb when there's irregular bets. So I'm going to give a plug for another documentary. Has anybody watched Bad Sport on Netflix? It was about the Arizona 1994 point shaving scandal, Arizona State. If you haven't watched it, you should watch it. So it talks about their star player and how he ended up getting caught in this point shaving scandal. And he comes clean about how he was trying to swing the games and everything. But it was a really good look into kind of that underworld but also like once you do it then they got you you know what I'm saying because it's like oh no you gonna keep keep you know throwing the game or you gonna keep covering the spread so but what's the guy that was working that works with LeBron who also admitted to um um mav carter mav carter i thought that guy swept under the rug i mean i know but it's like you working with lebron and you admit to betting on basketball but come on that's like oh your friends can bet okay nah but yeah I mean but he's not playing if you're a player stop like it's just it's too different it's way it's way different but is it I wonder what are the rules so like if you're a trainer can I can I bet on basketball if I'm an athletic trainer for a team probably not I'm sure I'm sure the league and the teams have rules yeah right so I would just say LeBron's manager should be prohibited also from betting on so this goes back and then another thing this goes back to his day Malik Beasley's days in Milwaukee so it was the 23-24 season he was not playing for the Pistons at that point but the Pistons you know but again you know I say... I think the Pistons probably leaked this story because they would have had to explain why they weren't signing him. Because if they know about it for 18 months, somebody knew about it for 18 months. They weren't about to sign him. You think so? Well, I mean, they probably asked for it to be made public. Yeah. Because it just came out. I'm not even sure it was a leak, but... I don't think they were going to sign him knowing that he could possibly be, you know, suspended. That would just be wasting money. So, you know, everybody's like, what's going to happen to Malik Beasley? So then, you know, that brings us to... He going to be at home next year. He going to be at home next year. That's what it means. The Pistons quickly picked up Karis LeVert, go blue.

And signed him to a two-year deal. And they also signed Robinson. And today they signed Duncan Robinson. Go Blue, again. They're trying to get the students in the seats. I knew Trajan Langdon liked Michigan. He probably wanted to go there. But no. So signing Kyrus LaVert who is a great role player. Shout out to fantasy basketball where I get to follow players on other teams all the time. And really look at their stats because of fantasy basketball. So I think that although Dennis Schrader signed away where he went to the West Coast. That I don't know where that leaves Malik Beasley right now. I mean, who's going to take a risk? I don't think anybody's going to take a risk on that, but way to mess up your check.

You know, because he did have a breakout year, but this isn't the first time that he's been involved in some... You know, mischief, a little bit of crime, right? Because wasn't he the player that had to play the game with the house arrest? I'm pretty sure because he got a charge for pulling out a weapon. I do know that. He has a civil suit against him from a marketing company right now also because apparently he has financial issues, troubles. He's made over $60 million in his career. He's played nine years. He's made over $60 million. But this marketing company did some work for him. This is Malik Beasley again, if I didn't say. And he didn't pay them. And they filed a lawsuit, I think, for $650,000. And he was slow-rolling them, slow-paying them, saying that he's getting ready to sign a free agent deal, so just hold off. Well, now that's in jeopardy. And I'm sure the lawsuit's pretty new. Once they saw that story come out, oh, you're not about to sign nothing. So they were filing a civil lawsuit so they can get their money. So it might have stemmed from financial issues. Yeah. yeah but no he did so in 2020 he pulled a gun out was he playing with a tether on his ankle but he pulled a gun out a rifle out it was a family outside of his home he had a plea plea deal There were also felony drug charges against him. He was sentenced to 120 days in jail but was granted a delay to serve the time after the end of the season and they granted him an opportunity to serve his sentence on house arrest. That's what I'm saying. It's not looking good. It's not. So I think that's what's also really disappointing for him is coming to the Pistons, he was kind of able to turn the page on some of that have a breakout year get paid and then boom this so you don't get that many chances but we hope everything works out well for him but it's not looking too good

yes yes yeah and it's annoying too some of the stuff is annoying I don't I have a really good friend who gambles I can't say no names but we've been friends for a really long time and so in college I went with him to the casino and he asked me if he listens to this he gonna know oh she talking about me we went to the casino together he won and he gave me the money and was like no matter what I do do not give me this money back and he we didn't fight but he harassed me harassed me the rest of the night come on come on give me give me some of the money give me some of the money I'm like no you told me don't give you don't give it to you I know I know I know but come on come on give me some of the money give me some of the money and so it went on for hours like hours and finally I was like look take this money leave me alone so we're still friends he's a good man friend this year. He texted me like, hey, can you give me a call? I'm like, sure. So he's like, can I borrow some money? So I'm like, no problem. So I send him money. Then he's like, I give it back to you on the end of the week. I'm like, okay, cool, whatever. So I mean, he's very successful. So I was like, he's always on some hijinks. So whatever. That's his life. He is married. So then the next week, he's like, I got a business opportunity for you. And I'm like, okay, what? He's like, you front me money for my gambling, and then I'll pay you back. I'll pay you back. He said he's married. He is. Yeah, that's why I said we're just friends. Just friends. Get off of my phone. So he was like, if you front me the money, I'll give you your money back and pay one and a half times your money so I'm like I don't really understand like why you he's like well my wife gave me only this allowance to gamble with I can't gamble anything more than what my monthly allowance is but I'm at these tables I'm in these really good poker games so I need some more So I was like, hell no. What's the number of gamblers anonymous? Right. And so he was like, I mean, he was like, why? Like you, my girl. I was like, I am your friend. But why would I give you money knowing like this is going to cause you to basically, you know what I'm saying? Compromise the agreement that you made with your wife. So he was like, but you're my friend. You're not my wife's friend. Like we've been friends since college. And so it really. It really is an addiction, a compulsion. So that's my question. If Malik Beasley is really addicted, has a gambling addiction, should that be treated differently? If you find out somebody in the league is an alcoholic or somebody in the league is addicted to drugs or something, should that be taken into consideration? not under my yeah go to rehab but I'm not about to sign you for three years but should he get another chance in the league I mean yeah I mean I think he I think he should get another chance period you know if he don't go to prison I mean I mean no I'm serious like First of all, he has not been charged with a crime. That's true. That's what his attorney said. This is just an investigation. Due process. So we're talking, you know, this is, we went way deep into this, but. But once the feds come knocking. Yeah, but he's not, in 18 months, he has not been charged with a crime. So what are they waiting for? So, but, you know, that takes us, you know, deeper into the free agency. A lot has been happening Free Agency officially started yesterday, July. I mean, no, officially today. Today's the first. Who's on first? Sheesh. But it officially started this week. And we have had a lot of movement. I was telling, I just threw out there before we started today, that one of my favorite teams that I'm going to be watching is Houston.

the Rockets I just I like the coach I like the team that they're putting together I like it I like what Milwaukee's doing everybody's like yeah no but everybody's trying you know Miles Turner jumped he was like I'm not about to sit here and wait for Tyrese Halliburton to come back to Indiana He's going to be out for the season. I'm not about to sit there for that. And he jumped over to the Milwaukee Bucks. And then the Milwaukee Bucks waived Dane Lillard, who's also recovering from an ACL injury. Yeah. We don't know when he'll be back for sure. But I want to really know what happens with Dane.

So we'll see how he's able to ramp up his playing as we head into the season. But, yeah, I think really after... After Jimmy Butler and Ben Simmons left, I think that was when the process ended. And, you know, once Maxie got there, I think it was kind of a new era, you know, with, you know, James Harden and now Paul George. I think it's a new era in Philly. But, you know, Joel Embiid's still the guy. We're still trusting in him. I think a healthy Joel Embiid is still one of the best players in the world. And I think he can lead the Sixers to a championship. It just comes down to... Is he going to be able to stay healthy? Can he play, you know, even half of an NBA season and still be healthy going into the postseason? And, you know, the past really three, four, five years, we have not seen that where he has been productive in the regular season and the postseason or has been healthy in the regular season and the postseason. Yeah, that was the strategy. They tried to employ this past season with Joel Embiid's play. They didn't play him in back-to-backs. He didn't really play the beginning of the season. He was just kind of... They're in spurts. He played two, three-game spurts, and then he just, you know, his body just couldn't keep up with it as the season went on. And, you know, it just wasn't good. It just snowballed for him. And eventually, you know, the knee problems required him to have surgery. So

it remains to be seen. I'm, you know, reading up on the – picks that the Pistons picked up, you know, Chaz, Lanier. I don't know too much about them, but it'll be interesting. The Pistons didn't do a lot of, you know, during the trade, they were like, they're kind of standing pat. So, you know, I want to see how they mesh. You know, we always talk about our home teams, but Pistons, you know, Hardaway Jr. left to go to Denver. I was sad about that. But we'll see what happens. Any other points on this? Like I said, we'll talk more. We'll be breaking down more about free agency and... There are trades happening in the WNBA too.
